Nichole Taylor encourages the use of badging for professional learning and we have some powerful conversations about the state of education in these challenging times. As a director of innovation and instruction for my school, I am always looking for ways to help educators but I don't want to interfere with all the work they're trying to do. Sometimes it's like walking a tight rope between professional learning and the work they have to do each and every day. I want to support them and help them, but sometimes it is difficult to find a way into a teacher's busy day, and the last thing I want to do is create more work for them. Well, Knikole gave me some great ideas on how to personalize professional learning for teachers in my district. I think it's something that you'll be able to use too. We go to many important areas in education. As well. You're gonna love this interview, It was a great week to be the wired educator! I have two other great interviews coming at you. Why don't more kids learn about financial literacy and entrepreneurship in school? Why are these not part of the core curriculum from kindergarten through 12th grade? Some states (like Iowa!) and local school districts do have these requirements, but way too many do not. The result is adults who don't know how to save and don't understand basic financial principles. Stop the madness! In our most recent episode, we are blowing the lid off this challenge, and bringing on the solutions! We discovered Junior Achievement last year and are in awe of how it answers so many of our concerns about financial literacy in the classroom. Our guest, Collin Lane tells us all about how JA brings experiential learning about financial principles—from finance, jobs, business, and entrepreneurship —to classrooms across the country, and how they've been doing it for over 100 years. Collin is in his second year as the director of programs for Junior Achievement of Central Iowa. Before his time with JA, he spent nearly 14 years in public education for Des Moines public schools. He taught fifth grade for seven years and was an elementary tech teacher. He served as Instructional Technology Coordinator as a member of the district-wide curriculum team. Collin has his BA in Elementary Education from Moorpark College and his Master's degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Iowa. what you will learn in this episode: Why we need to prepare our kids with financial literacy How Junior Achievement has been helping young entrepreneurs for 100+ years The kinds of financial literacy and entrepreneurship programs JA provides How kids can gain an immersive experience in business that they will remember the rest of their lives Teaching kids beyond basics to get at deeper principles of financial well-being Why school districts should include financial literacy as part of the core curriculum from K-12 How to take financial literacy to the next level with college-age young people Why mentorship is the cheat code of life

It was a simple, but mighty vision: be all about the kids and be innovative. It took a few years, and a strategic plan, but we progressed as a district on those two fronts. Part of that strategic plan was to move 1-1 with our students. We saw districts that tried and failed because of poor planning, poor training, poor infrastructure, or a combination thereof. It was decided to take a more measured approach. The first step was to get the right people in place. Three years ago RCISD hired Zach Snow as the Instructional Technology Coordinator and did the crazy thing of placing him not in the technology department, but the newly reorganized curriculum department head by Assistant Superintendent Julia Robinson. This is a seemingly small distinction, but if the focus was going to be on instruction and not on the technology, then department placement is key." Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "Global Google Mapping" presented by Kathy Beck, March 19, 2016. We are in for a real treat with the presentation by Kathy Beck this week! She has some awesome advice and resources to share with us about Global Google Mapping. This is Kathy's description for her presentation: Global Google Mapping – can you say it 3 times fast? You have made a global connection and now you want to share your world with them, and see views of their location as well. However – your field trip budget doesn’t afford your students to travel to and SEE the locations where you have made those global connections. Let me show you some fabulous ways to utilize Google Tools to create “visual visits” as well as sharing about your own location. You will learn how to easily use some Google tools, as well as web tools like Heganoo, Thinglink, Skype, Newseum, World Explorer and apps such as Newsy, Stuck on Earth, Globe for iPad and cross-platform tools such as Flat Stanley and Duolingo. Resources and links provided. http://bit.ly/GlobalGoogleMapping Kathy Beck is an Instructional Technology Coordinator in a large school district in North Carolina.
