Alan Gayton: Technology Director, Sci-Fi Enthusiast, and Barbecue Competitor. This is episode 628 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast. Alan Gayton is a 51-year-old IT geek who has been playing with computers since he was a kid stealing software on a Commodore 64. He started his career as the first Technology Specialist for Gordon County Schools, where he had the dubious honor of fixing the computers and switches that always broke down. He then became an Instructional Technology Specialist, where he had to deal with endless questions such as “What does ‘click here' mean?” He is now the Director of Technology for the North Georgia RESA, where he has the daunting task of managing the technology needs and issues of the RESA and its 5-member school districts. When he is not glued to his screen or phone, Alan likes to pretend that he is a pitmaster and a martial arts expert. He competes in competition BBQ as one half of team Q-Inator!, which is a clever name that he came up with after watching too much Phineas and Ferb. He and his partner have won some trophies and ribbons in various categories, but they are still far from being the best of the best. Alan also practices karate, which he learned from watching Karate Kid and Cobra Kai. He has a black belt, which he bought online (or maybe earned at UKS Karate), and he likes to show off his moves to anyone who will watch. Alan is always willing to help or teach someone something new, as long as they don't ask too many questions or challenge his authority. He is a proud father of two children who are smarter and more talented than him, and a loyal husband to his wife who puts up with his antics. He lives in Calhoun, Georgia, where he enjoys the fresh air and the peaceful surroundings. Alan's Brunswick Stew Recipe MEAT: ½ lb smoked pork ½ lb smoked beef ½ lb smoked chicken OR 1 can Castleberry BBQ Pork 1 can Castleberry BBQ Beef ! lrg can Chunk Chicken 2 cans cream corn 2 cans petite diced tomatoes 1 bottle Chili sauce ¼ cup favorite bbq sauce (more or less to taste) Hot sauce to taste Salt and pepper to taste   Mix all in crock pot and cook on high for around 4 hours or on low for around 8.   A few notes: Meat To get it to turn out more like mine, you will need to use smoked meat and run it through a grinder with a large-holed plate. It will still be great if you don't, but it does give it that more authentic texture Home smoked meat is best, but you can also get it from a local bbq restaurant If you decide to use canned, it is getting hard to find the Castleberry's products in stores (particularly the beef) but you can probably use other brands or shop online. Feel free to add other veggies to make it how you like. Awesome conversation! Had so much fun! Enjoy it!   Before you go... Could you do me a favor? Ideas for use continue to come as you play with the tool. Wakelet can be used for note taking on books for future use or creating your own story. It is a great tool for self reflection and goal setting to show growth. The best way to empower teachers for this or any other tool is by modeling it's use first. Wakelet can be used for districts so that it includes analytics. Wakelet can be a tool to empower students to use technology for good. They are already curating. Let them use Wakelet to do it in a positive way that benefits their education. We now need to listen to students and let them lead the way to advance in technology. Why do we only bring schools together to compete instead of learn? We are all learning the same thing, we should be learning it together. Embrace the evolution of your path. We have to be careful to not be too quick to put our opinion into situations without fully understanding them. If we are going to keep learning we should never be afraid to admit when we change our philosophies. Our coaches are being asked to coach at the secondary level.  What is the secondary world like? Do I use similar strategy to get into teachers classrooms as I do now?” Relationships across the board. Make them comfortable coming to you no matter what grade level. Remember Technology integration is the same basic concept. As the coach you are not expected to know the higher-level content; just be an encourager and motivator in teaching them how to integrate technology effectively. Similar strategies are definitely effective such as 1:1 coaching, Lunch/learns, etc. Etc. I Do-We Do-You Do model can be effective then word spreads to colleagues about the effectiveness of what you as a coach has taught them At the high school level, think about meeting with the department heads periodically to get a feel for how things are going and then fill the principal in throughout the year. This creates buy-in and leaves the teachers wanting more. Bringing items in from all of the content areas and showing teachers and students how it can all come together. Celebrate baby steps with various successes as you go. Look for willing participants. Look for ideas in everyday conversations with teachers and/or staff meetings. Let the ideas develop as colleagues talk with one another and realize ways that they can collaborate. Building A Culture of STEM Integrating STEM and Project-Based Learning that may already be happening in the classroom.  Start small and bring the community together, partner with local businesses. Find opportunities to chat with teachers in whatever form that may look like and work for you building. I am working with other local organizations as well to bring more awareness re: male victims and other populations of victims that are not as talked about. The other organizations include Sisters4Sisters, Moving4Jesus, DC Alliance for Empowering Homicide Survivors (DCAEHS), and Voices Against Domestic Violence (VADV). VADV in particular seeks to replicate a transitional housing program for female victims that they have done in West Virginia. The project here in the DMV will support male victims and their children. My non-profit, Movement Ministries, focuses on supporting victims and survivors of domestic violence, returning citizens , and low income families." BIO: Hampton E. Conway III is an Instructional Technology Specialist for Prince George’s County Schools. He has been a teacher and principal during his over 20 years in education. Show Notes: During today's interview segment, we chat with Andrew Marcinek, former (and first) Chief Open Education Adviser for the US Department of Education, and current Chief Information Officer at Worcester Academy in Worcester, Massachusetts.  In his role at the Department of Education, Andrew focused on accelerating the adoption of open education policies within the Department and across the federal government. As part of this campaign, Andrew organized a White House event that launched a national movement called #GoOpen and brought together EdTech companies, district and state leaders, and nonprofits. His ultimate goal was to increase the curation and sharing of open educational materials by educators throughout the country. Prior to that, he served as Director of Technology, Instructional Technology Specialist, and secondary English teacher in schools in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.   During our discussion, we ask Andrew about his role as Chief Information Officer at Worcester Academy, how the use of technology may be impeding student learning and widening achievement gaps, and what #EdTech may look like in the coming years and decades. Questions and Resources: 1. Recently, research from Finland was published that said that "digital-based curriculum impedes learning" - what kind of balance should teachers seek when utilizing technology in their classrooms? Is there a right/wrong way to do so? 2. In your previous work, you worked to integrate 1:1 technology learning environment for schools. What does a 1:1 classroom look like in an ideal environment and how should school leadership teams go about facilitating this work? 3.   Ge-Anne Bolhuis is the Instructional Technology Specialist and Media Specialist Liaison for a Georgia (US) school system. Today, we are talking about Future Ready Schools and Future Ready Librarians. According to their website futureready.org, "Future Ready Schools® helps K-12 public, private, and charter school leaders plan and implement personalized, research-based digital learning strategies so all students can achieve their full potential."  Additionally, a Future Ready Librarian is expected to be an instructional leader to help schools become Future Ready. Ge-Anne shares with us her thoughts about the need to have the instructional talents of the librarians used to help teachers implement better practices in the classroom. She shares that building administrators really have to have a better understanding of the role that librarians can play in keeping the school on track. You'll hear us discuss the expectations of a Future Ready Librarian as well as some of the tools that the librarians can use to help drive the school to new levels of success. We also talk about her favorite app - Google Keep and other tools that the Future Ready Librarian can share with the faculty of schools and students. Meet Lisa Johnson, Instructional Technology Specialist for NEISD, App Enthusiast, Apptivity Author, Social Geek, Wordpress Addict, and Lifelong Learner. Lisa told us, “I am blessed to be working as an Instructional Technology Specialist for NEISD. I love my job and never truly see it as "work". The Mumford & Sons song, Awake Your Soul, says it best “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.”   Lisa received her Master Technology Teacher certification from OLLUSA in 2008, taught 4 years of 7th Math/Pre-Algebra, and has certifications in elementary education, middle school mathematics, and all-level English/Language Arts. Her love for “cooking up” technology integrated lessons and the need for a creative outlet and a global audience led to the creation of  techchef4u wordpress blog.  Throughout the years she has served in various leadership and mentoring roles and is very involved in curriculum planning, vertical alignment, developing assessments, and disaggregating data. She has designed and presented technology training at district, regional, and state conventions and conferences. Blog, LinkedIn profile & Twitter feed for more info on Lisa, resources, and updates
