On the night of October 20, 1972, 26-year-old Patricia Wagner left her Jersey City apartment for a coffee date with her new boyfriend, Dennis. Her mother, Marie, agreed to watch Patty's two young sons, Kenny and Michael, for a few hours. Before leaving, Patty's oldest son, Kenny, begged her not to go. He was overcome by a bad feeling about his mother going out that night, but he didn't know why. Patty reassured her young son that she would return later and headed out of her apartment for her date. That was the last known sighting of Patricia Wagner. Patty never came home, and her family never heard from her again. Although Patty's mother quickly jumped into action to report her daughter missing, Patty's case went ice cold. Decades later, a younger family member became determined to do what she could to find her long-lost cousin. Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. CRAIG WEDRENCraig Wedren first gained notice as the dynamic, multi-octave-wielding frontman of Shudder to Think. With its eccentric song structures and complex time signatures, Shudder to Think would prove a significant influence on math rock, post-hardcore, and emo. Since the band wound down in the late-'90s, Wedren has released a series of solo albums and related collaborative projects, and his music has become an essential part of some of film and television's most popular and lauded shows. Beginning with the soundtracks for the late-'90s films High Art and First Love, Last Rites along with his Shudder to Think bandmates, Craig's composing resume has gone on to include extensively working with director Lisa Cholodenko (The Kids Are All Right) and David Wain (Role Models, Wet Hot American Summer). Wedren would go on to create evocative, decidedly contemporary scores for cultural-touchstone films and television series including The School of Rock, Laurel Canyon, Reno 911!, GLOW (Netflix), Fresh Off the Boat (ABC), Shrill (Hulu), New Amsterdam (NBC) and, most recently, the wildly popular Showtime series YELLOWJACKETS. ANNA WARONKERAnna Waronker is a composer, songwriter, singer and artist. Well known as the front woman and songwriter for the Los Angeles based band that dog., Anna has taken her unique melodic and harmonic sensibility and personal lyrical wit into composing for film and television. Notable scores and soundtracks include the limited series adaptation of Tegan & Sara's best-selling memoir, High School (FreeVee), Shrill (Hulu) with whom she co-composed with Craig Wedren, I Love That For You (Paramount+ with Showtime), the animated series Harriet The Spy (Apple), the cult classic Josie And The Pussycats, Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, and many more. Anna has also worked in theater as a composer penning the music, book and lyrics with Charlotte Caffey (Go-Go's) for Lovelace A Rock Opera (The Hayworth Theater, Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and songs and score for a musical adaptation of Hit The Wall and Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner's The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (Los Angeles LGBT Center/Davidson/Valentini Theatre). As a singer, performer and recording artist, Anna has produced and released two solo albums and four albums with that dog., most recently the critically acclaimed Old LP (UMe) in 2019. Recently, Anna has been busy working on the third season of Call Me Kat (Fox) and the young adult mystery School Spirits (Paramount+). Anna is currently working on the second season of the Emmy nominated and Critic's Choice winner Yellowjackets (Paramount+ with Showtime) with Craig Wedren. The duo write and perform a very unique and celebrated score. For season two of Yellowjackets, Anna and Craig have written an original song that features Hedwig and the Angry Inch's John Cameron Mitchell and collaborated with Alanis Morrisette on an alternate version of their Hollywood Music in Media Awards winning main title of Yellowjackets entitled “No Return.”

#57 - Leigh Silverman: What is Essential?

“It is, I think in the funhouse of this time, a very, very hard thing to feel like the job that you do and the way that you do it, and the life that you've chose as your north star is not there… and not only a thing you always felt was essential, but you really start to understand the word essential and you understand it differently and you understand it doesn't include you.” - Leigh Silverman. We're trying, right? As we emerge from the rubble of this pandemic, lifting the theatre up has been a Herculean feat. In the middle of all this, we as individuals are experiencing existential dread and asking ourselves – as we essential? Sure, we might not be essential workers, but we do have purpose. That's one of the reasons Tony Nominated Director Leigh Silverman chose to direct Jane Wagner's revival of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe starring Saturday Night Live's Cecily Strong.  “It is a play that deals with people who are searching for meaning at a time that feels meaningless,” continues Silverman. It does it through humor and it does it through pathos and it does it through a celebration of community and live theatre. It's the reason why I wanted to do the play. I couldn't imagine coming back to the theatre and doing any other play because this play articulates and recognizes the power of being together in a room full of strangers in the dark laughing and crying about the same things. And I just quoted the play.” In this episode, Leigh and Michael ask the tough questions. What is essential? What is our worth within the industry? But these are the questions that need to be asked. Plus, Leigh keys us into what it's like to direct a revival, the things that needed to be changed / rewritten, fangirling over Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner, and the brilliance of Cecily Strong.  And of course – how does the multi-hyphenate help the director? Straight from the director's mouth – learn how the multi-hyphenate identity helps strengthen a theatrical experience by approaching work from different perspectives.  Leigh Silverman has directed on Broadway Violet (Tony nomination); Chinglish; Well; The Lifespan of a Fact, and Grand Horizons. Off-Broadway: American Hero (2ST); Kung Fu (Signature Theatre); The (curious case of the) Watson Intelligence (Playwrights Horizons); The Call (Playwrights Horizons); The Madrid (MTC); Golden Child (Signature Theatre); No Place to Go (Public Theater; Two River Theatre); In the Wake (Center Theatre Group/Berkeley Repertory Theatre and The Public Theater, Obie Award, Lortel nomination); Go Back to Where You Are (Playwrights Horizons, Obie Award); From Up Here (MTC, Drama Desk nomination); Yellow Face (Center Theatre Group/The Public Theater); Coraline (MCC/True Love); Blue Door (Playwrights Horizons); Well (The Public Theater; Huntington Theatre; ACT); Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (Second Stage Theatre). Recent regional: The Heidi Chronicles (The Guthrie); American Hero (WTF); Chinglish (Goodman Theater, Jeff nomination; West Coast/Hong Kong tour). What makes a marriage last? We can talk about the research, but in the end, it's where the rubber meets the road that matters most. For today's show, we have a special episode with some very special guests. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary by talking to 40 famous couples who all have long-standing marriages. So that we not only get a glimpse into the private lives of well-known people, which is interesting in and of itself, but we also get a sense of the special sauce that has helped them, each of them, stay together and connected over many, many years. There's also a moment in this interview that was perhaps, one of my most challenging as a host, when I asked the tough question that I was afraid might have actually taken my guest down for the count. Fortunately, as you'll hear, he's okay and his wife stepped in with a masterful answer to an important question. Neil Sattin: Their names are Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue, and as I mentioned, they have now been married for more than 40 years. Marlo Thomas is an award-winning actress, best-selling author and activist, who has won four Emmys, a Golden Globe, a Grammy and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other awards. She's also the Outreach Director for Saint Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Phil Donahue is a writer, producer and journalist whose daytime talk show, The Donahue Show, was honored with 20 Emmy awards. He's also been inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame and is a recipient of a George Foster Peabody Award. Together, they are the authors of the best-selling book, What Makes a Marriage Last, where as I mentioned, they have interviewed 40 celebrated couples about their relationships and the specific things that help them stay connected through the good times and the challenging times. Neil Sattin: It's a series of fascinating interviews with people like President Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, LL Cool J and Simone Smith, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Elton John and David Furnish, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, Sting and Trudie Styler, Deepak and Rita Chopra, Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner. What better befits a Valentine's episode than a couple of films about star-crossed lovers. First, it's punk (Nicholas Cage, in his first starring role) meets prep in Martha Coolidge's low-key, surprisingly affecting teensploitation cult classic VALLEY GIRL (1983). Lily Tomlin received a bit of advice early in her life that she really took to heart: If you can’t be direct, why be? Lily’s direct approach to performing, exemplified by her creation of original characters, led her to early success in New York cabarets, spots on The Merv Griffin Show, and her breakout showcase on Laugh-In. Lily and Marc talk about her personal and professional relationship with her longtime collaborator and now wife Jane Wagner, her roles in movies like Nashville and 9 to 5, and her friendship with Jane Fonda that continues today as they reach the sixth season of Grace and Frankie. This episode is sponsored by Avenue 5 on HBO and Capterra.

It's your very first Scandal-less week, and we know the depression runs deep (it's running deep for us, too). It's Wednesday, and though we are no Olivia Pope or David Rosen (RIP), we ARE the Critelli's and this IS ANOTHER EPISODE OF RELATIONSH!T. Buckle up, because it's "been handled". (Get to the) GOOD SH!T: She needs no introduction … Yet, we can’t help but introduce an actress that has had such a profound impact on movies and television (for decades), and is this week’s #GAYRELATIONSHIPGOALS. We (of course are talking about none other than Lily Tomlin and her wonderful wife, Jane Wagner. At this point, the couple has been together for 47 years (married for 5) and they couldn’t be anymore inspirational. We love them because they’ve shown us that the world is going to take FOREVER to recognize you and your partner for the wonderful couple that you are, especially if you're a same-sex couple, but as long as that love and commitment exists … there is nothing that can do or say to you. Join us is celebrating this incredible couple, and find out why they are our #LifeGoals, as well as this week's #GayRelationship Goals (We just) TALKING SH!T: If you like it, then you SHOULD put a ring on it. But what happens if you (later realized that you) don’t like it and, you’ve already put a ring on it? How do learn to accept your partner for who they are and come to peace with (the fact) that THIS is who they will be for the rest of their life (and yours … if you’re lucky), and you've got to be ok with that? The guys dive into the concept of acceptance of one another while in a relationship and how to love each other regardless of your (personal) irritation(s). Later, the guys sit down and talk about the TEN common causes of failed relationships. Marko and Tony discuss (and argue) about how they feel about these common relationship occurrences, and how they plan to do better in this marriage. You won’t want to miss this! (Don’t step in) YOUR SH!T: I luh ya papi! Actually, I don't. As a matter of fact, I don't like it when you call me names in Spanish, while we're doing it (and don't get me started on calling me "daddy"), AT ALL. How do I tell him to knock it off, without sounding like a bad hombre? Also, sometimes life would be so much easier if we were able to live as our favorite cartoon characters. And now that you've thought about it ... which cartoon character is most closely related to you? Find out how Marko and Tony answered. - - - - - Relationship problems? By Elisa Parker The legacy of Lily Tomlin: “I’m more than happy to know that there was a kid named Elisa who regaled her younger siblings with Edith Ann stories.  That’s as much as anything can be.” ~Lily Tomlin   We’ve all had our childhood heroes whether it was Superman, Wonder Woman or Evel Knievel (speaking from a child of the 70s).  Mine was Lily Tomlin.  As a young girl I would tell stories as Edith Ann (one of Lily’s most famous characters) to my younger brothers and sister in the back of our station wagon.  Through Lily’s work I was introduced to the art of imitation and comedy.  She also inspired one of my first moments of activism for women.  As an eight year old girl the film 9-5 left quite the impression on me.  I decided (in my 4th grade kind of way) to make copies of the 9-5 lyrics and hand them out to every kid in my school.  I was determined to spread the story of everyday women in the workforce, women who were taking matters into their own hands. In a successful career that spans over forty years Lily Tomlin has served as a power figure for women in the media.  She has received numerous awards including six Emmys, one Tony, one Grammy, two Peabody Awards and most recently she and partner Jane Wagner were honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Fame.  In addition to being an American icon she is an activist who puts her passion into action for women’s rights and animal protection.  Tomlin can be found on the website for women www.wowowow.com and participates with other celebrities to create an on-line community which is run by women for women.  She is also narrating the HBO documentary, An Apology to Elephants. My connection with Lily Tomlin came full circle as I recently interviewed her as part of See Jane Do.  Within the 60 minutes of our conversation Lily shared her greatest memories around her personal idols (like Lucille Ball and Ruth Draper) and fellow co-stars like Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Candice Bergen, Eve Ensler and Dolly Parton.  She talks about the War on Women and her response to Rush Limbagh’s attack on Sarah Fluke (as told through Ernestine).  We discussed what the movie 9-5 would look like now in 2012 and her current projects like a new Edith Ann game app and a TV pilot where she plays Reba McIntire’s mother.  I’m not sure my sense of connection to Lily Tomlin is because she exudes a sense of wonderment in characters like Edith Ann, the sassiness of Ernestine or the strength and wit of Violet in 9-5.  Perhaps it’s just because Lily Tomlin is the real deal.  She truly lives out her passion and as an award winning comedian and actress she’s obviously doing something right.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 146 This week we do our best impression of a gourmet coffee show on PBS, as we roll into a one-two punch of Marlena Moments. (I think we have our work cut out for us.) Plus a “One from the Vaults” memory from the film’s star Lily Tomlin! And after we do our part to help society with Movie Meltdown’s public service announcement, we go on to mention… going to third base, an Easter-themed neighborhood, subdued but still obnoxious, Gandhi eating Mayor McCheese, Jane Wagner, going to jail for the Lord Jesus Christ, that pistachio suit, stock gorilla suits, Jello shots… two birds with one stone, why is Lily Tomlin so hot?, Concepcion, the trashiest drunkest pseudo-bikers you could ever find, Barbie Dreamhouse, the screaming box, why women aren’t funny?, Jesus riding a T-Rex, Henry Gibson, The Keystone Kops, 80’s high back-butt, characters grow… people change, Dinosaurs and monster trucks, JT, Raymond Carver, Rick Baker, Mike Douglas, Pussy Bow Blouse, AH!, the twin-pack sidetrack, toxic soup will save us, and the fact that it looks like a swingers party - and everybody’s ugly!
