SaaStr 759: 5 Metrics that Matter When Raising Your SaaS Series A and Series B Round with Christoph Janz, Partner at Point Nine Capital  What data and metrics do you need to convince SaaS investors you're in good shape and aligned with what they care about? Christoph Janz, Partner at Point Nine Capital, shares 5 key insights during this year's SaaStr Annual. These metrics are more targeted to those preparing for a Series A or B round and could make the difference between an excited-to-invest-in-you investor and a pass. Why should you spend the time getting your act together before fundraising? If your data is self-explanatory, in good shape, easy to understand, and aligned with what investors care about, you avoid a lot of unnecessary back and forth. Less time clarifying what your metrics mean results in more time to talk to more investors in parallel and increased confidence with each of those investors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SaaStr hosts the largest SaaS community events on the planet.

“That’s what gets us super excited — being able to see a product that fits a very specific need in the market, that even if it’s built super roughly, already exposes the needs that the founder has identified.” Few know the B2B venture space in Europe better than Point Nine Capital. From Delivery Hero and Zendesk, which both IPO’d, to Typeform, Clio, and Vend, the Point Nine team knows how to spot a startup poised for growth. As an early-stage investor at Seedcamp, Cherry, and now as a partner at Point Nine, Ricardo Sequerra Amram spends his days speaking with founders who are at the pre-version 1.1 development stage of a product. In this episode of This Much I Know, Carlos Espinal dives into how Ricardo assesses these bare-bone prototypes and determines their viability to scale. “A magical moment throughout our due-diligence is when we are going through the product with the founder and he is explaining to us why he built such a feature first and why exactly is it that this particular part of the product is important for the prototype, and why he didn’t build the other feature,” Ricardo says. “That’s where the clarity of thought and insight that was generated throughout years of industry experience comes out.” Listen in as Ricardo and Carlos discuss Ricardo’s path into venture capital, and how Point Nine thinks about what makes up a backable prototype and successful B2B entrepreneur. Back in 2012, when I raised $1.6M in funding for Clarity.fm, I insisted on squeezing more out of my investors. When I put together the final cap table, I made it clear that I also wanted introductions with other investors and businesses on their portfolio.  They told me, “Dan, you’re asking a lot here…” But I put my foot down. I knew you couldn’t put a price on leveraging contacts and networking. Every minute I’ve spent growing my network has paid dividends tenfold. Since then I’ve realized that investors aren’t just a source of capital… They are a gateway to the entire SaaS industry. Which is why I love interviewing investors for their unique view of the market. My latest Escape Velocity podcast guest, Christoph Janz, is the co-founder of Point Nine Capital, a very successful venture capital firm with over $75M of investments. Christoph loves investing in SaaS. If you want to attract rockstar funding, then check out this eye-opening interview. In this episode, you’re going to learn about: Why investors have to hustle too How Point Nine Capital was the first to invest in Zendesk How European investment firms are booming The bottleneck of Silicon Valley talent If freemium is right for you How to think critically about your pricing model Creating a built-in SaaS referral system What investors are looking for Point Nine Capital has invested in big names in tech, such as Typeform, Algolia, Contentful, Geckboard, Delivery Hero, Revolut and more. Christoph was even one the first investors of Zendesk back when it was a team of 4 people making only $7K MRR (now valued at over $2.1 billion). Erik is joined by his co-host for this episode, Brianne Kimmel (@briannekimmel), investor, advisor and Village Global network leader. They talk to Christoph Janz (@chrija), investor at Point Nine Capital, a Berlin-based early stage venture capital firm focused on SaaS and digital marketplaces. Christoph lays out their investing thesis at Point Nine and talks about why they are geography-agnostic when it comes to potential deals. He explains at which stage they like to invest and some of the difficulties in evaluating early-stage SaaS companies. The three delve into some of the more successful SaaS companies from the past few years and use them as case studies to talk about how to evaluate an early-stage product, team and sales strategy.
