(May 31, 2024) The Adirondacks have become a major tourist destination over the last couple of decades. That's due in part to Jim McKenna, longtime CEO of the Adirondacks' Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, or ROOST. McKenna retires today after 40 years. Ferry services are a significant issue in MHA Jim McKenna's district. The Veteran, which normally sails to Fogo and Change Islands, is in drydock, and the replacement vessel, the Kamutik W, will be out of service on May 21. To complicate things further, the ferry fleet took a hit when the Flanders was damaged by fire on Bell Island last week. Jim McKenna is the new MHA for the district or Fogo and Change Islands.
When Progressive Conservative Jim McKenna won the Fogo Island-Cape Freels by-election this week, it flipped a district that had been Liberal since it was created in 2015. McKenna took the district by more than a thousand votes over the Liberal candidate. He says important issues for rural voters, such as ferry service and the inshore fishery, have been ignored by the Furey government. To find out whether McKenna's election is a one-off, or could be an indication of more change to come, we reached political psychologist Amanda Bittner. at Memorial University.
There's a new member of the House of Assembly this morning. A byelection was called for the district of Cape Freels-Fogo after the passing of MHA Derrick Bragg in January. Progressive Conservative candidate Jim McKenna was the winner.
UC Today's Kieran Devlin speaks to Jim McKenna, VP of Strategic Partnerships at Black Box, and Luiz Domingos, CTO at Mitel. In this session, we discuss the following:The key trends in the evolution of the modern workplaceThe challenges businesses face in their transitions into the modern workplaceHow businesses can achieve successful transformations into the new era of workplaces

We've had interesting recent discussions about AI and the law with great guests like Robert Plotkin. And we've had many interesting conversations about AI with CIO legends like Mark Settle from Okta and Carter Busse from Workato to name a few. In over 200 episodes we haven't yet discussed how to deliver IT service to the legal industry.Jim McKenna has been delivering technology to attorneys and coaching others who do the same for more than two decades. In his current role at perennial Silicon Valley top law firm Fenwick & West, Jim supports an organization of more than 1,000 employees as CIO. He oversees teams that manage IT and security and is first and foremost a thought leader for the business. Prior to Fenwick, Jim held similar roles at Morrison and Forester. The Winter World University Games is the largest multi-sport winter event in the world, after the Olympic Winter Games. This year's event starts January 12 and is an 11-day international festival and competition combining high-level sport with educational and cultural events, all taking place in Lake Placid, New York, and nearby towns. With more than 2,500 participants from over 50 countries, the Winter World University Games will reignite the celebrated history of the 1932 and 1980 Olympic venues, many of which have been recently modernized. In this conversation, SportsTravel Managing Editor Matt Traub sits down with Mike Pratt, president and chief executive officer of the Olympic Regional Development Authority, and with Jim McKenna, the longtime president and chief executive officer of the Lake Placid CVB. We discuss not only the new venues and the logistics for the Winter World University Games but the legacy of Lake Placid's Olympic history and how it still has an impact on sports tourism in the Adirondacks region and what he hopes will be this event's legacy both in the field of competition and beyond when it comes to sustainability in sports.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And thanks for coming back to the podcast. :) Peter Bengtson emailed some more photos: "Hi Mark, I've been back in Tucson for about 10 days after our birding trip to Hawaii. The Hawaii trip was excellent with about 35 life birds, a good group of people, and excellent guides. I'm back to doing my early morning walks (have to start walking about sunrise for the cooler weather). The photo was taken looking north to Safford peak with a hot air balloon moving to the right to pass Safford to the east side. Back in my peak climbing days I climbed Safford a number of times. It's a great trip with wonderful views from the top. I learned how to connect 3 of your podcasts, so I could listen to your podcasts for the whole time. Thanks for the work you do to distribute this music." Peter Bengtson sent another photo from October: "Mark, I've recently been walking the bicycle trail along the Rillito River. This was the most dramatic piece of art along the trail. It shows bats riding bicycles. The upper bat and bicycle is upside down since the bats hang upside down under the bridges over the river. The second and third messages are information signs about the Mexican Free Tail bats living under bridges. I couldn't figure out how to get all 3 photo into the same message."

Members of his family emigrated to Boston during the Irish Famine. Daniel, and his brother Neil, were two of the six founding members of the American Society of Hibernians (later merging with the Ancient Order of Hibernians) in Boston on March 17, 1857. This organization was formed "for the purpose of rendering assistance to the sick and disabled members of their society, and also of providing for the decent burial of the dead". Jim's great-great uncle from Drumkeeran Ireland, Thomas McPartlin, performed traditional music on the banjo in Boston during the late 1800's. In November 2017, Jim's performance of his composition "Lament for Bridget O'Donnel: A Victim of Famine" was included in the soundtrack of the Kilkenny Famine Experience Memorial audio visual tour. 8:27 - “Lament For The Forgotten Irish Of Catholic Mt. That's because next week, I will record my monthly update for Celtfather Music & Travel. You definitely want to stick around. I'll tell you the story of my recording of Mingulay Boat Song. Plus, Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer want you to dance. 13:19 - STORY OF BUGS BUNNY and HALLOWEEN I loved Bugs Bunny growing up. Who didn't. The show was packed with incredible comedy that was pretty appealing to most people, a little slapstick, a little satirical. A lot of classic fun. Back in 2006, Halloween was approaching. Charlie Brown might've had the Great Pumpkin. But I never found near as much fun as Bugs Bunny and Witch Hazel. I decided to write a song. The original story starts with Witch Hazel brewing a potion on Halloween. As she collects an ingredient, she stops to ask her Magic Mirror, “Who is the ugliest one of all.” The Genie declares it is Witch Hazel. The doorbell rings. Bugs Bunny is out trick or treating dressed as a witch. Witch Hazel worries that she's not as ugly as the Bugs Bunny Witch. Her mirror confirms that Bugs is uglier. So Witch Hazel invites Bugs in to drink tea under the pretense to learn all of Bugs' ugly secrets. The tea is actually a potion that'll turn Witch Bugs pretty. Bugs Bunny removes his mask to drink. Witch Hazel remembers a recipe that needs a “rabbit's clavicle”. And the chase begins. They race around the house until Witch Hazel catches Bugs. She catches Bugs, ties him up and goes to sharpen her knife. But Bugs looks at her with those big eyes and Witch Hazel breaks down in tears. Bugs reminds her of Paul, her pet tarantula. Still tied up in rope, Bugs hops over to and brings Witch Hazel some comforting tea… the same tea that is actually a beauty potion. Witch Hazel turns into a knockout redhead. She ask the Genie in the Magic Mirror who is the ugliest. The Genie boards his magic carpet and chases after Witch Hazel into the night's sky. My story isn't at all different from the original. In fact, it's basically a retelling of the story in poetical song form. I'll be honest. I love the rhythm and music of the song. It's fun. But if I were writing it today, I would've done it quite differently. I'm not entirely sure how I would change it. But as it is I still love it. Let me know what you think... 17:02 - “A Rabbit for Halloween” from What Color Is Your Dragon? Pub Songs & Stories was produced by Marc Gunn. Top of the morning to ya! We are celebrating the Irish diaspora on this St. Paddys Day by remembering the brave soldiers of St. Patricks Battalion in the Mexican American War. St. Patricks Battalion was a multi-racial unit comprised mostly of recent Irish immigrants who defected from the slave holding army of the United States and fought with the people of Mexico against the U.S. invasion. On part one we go back to Ireland in the 1800's to learn about the conditions that produced these soldiers and shaped their solidarities. Subscribe on Patreon to get access to part 2 where we cross the Atlantic and go to war with the ugly ideology of manifest destiny. **Trigger Warning*** this episode includes descriptions of emaciation and hunger in the context of famine This episode, as always, was beautifully produced by our very own Isaac Specktor This episode features a rendition of "Skibbereen" by Irish-American piper Jim McKenna. Named after a town in County Cork, the lyrics for this Irish folk song follow a conversation wherein a father details to his son why they were forced to leave Skibbereen, due to famine, eviction and rebellion. For an in depth look at Famine in the late British Empire check out Mike Davis' book Late Victorian Holocausts
Every show we like to introduce something new about this case and this show is no exception. Jim McKenna joins Ilyas, Jamie and Chris to review the interviews the Hinton Lab chemists gave to the state police and OIG. We discover that the Hinton Lab actually investigated how certain chemists method of testing samples actually contaminated within an 18 inch radius. While 18 inches doesn't sound like a lot, you have to remember that these chemists operated very close to each other with open containers. The ramifications from this revelation are enormous and were never investigated by the state. The guys also read the interviews the chemists did with the state police shortly before Dookhan's arrest which paint a very clear picture of a lab in shambles.

I hope you’re doing amazing despite the Coronavirus and the social distancing that’s taken over all of our lives. I know it sucks, but I hope you are safe and healthy. On the bright side, there were a LOT of opportunities to hear Celtic music over the past couple o’weeks despite St Patrick’s Day being effectively closed. And I keep hearing about more musicians going live. So make sure you check the news of your favorite bands. See who’s playing and watch one of their shows. And if you’re able, help them out. Buy some music or merch, send them a tip. Tell them thanks for all of the music they create. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out every week. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. Oh! And we got a bunch of new patrons this month. We hit the $700 milestone on Patreon. That means I’m gonna plan a 2-hour special of instrumental Celtic music with minimal talk and a ton of amazing music. CELTIC PODCAST NEWS We’re getting closer to 1000 ratings on Apple Podcasts. Yeah. I said ratings. Looks like I messed up when I said reviews. But that’s still brilliant. Just 17 left. Go give your review. A quick additional note about St Patrick’s Day. I know it sucked that it was effectively shut down. I think we need to make Halfway to St Patrick’s Day as big St Paddy’s Day should’ve been this year. So go talk to your local pub or Celtic organizations. We have just over 5 months to plan. Let’s make it happen on September 17th! Oh! And I want send out a huge thanks to Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. She organized an impromptu St Patrick’s Day virtual festival on Facebook and Instagram. Some of these concerts are still available to watch online. Submit music to the podcast at 4celts.com. Vote in the Celtic Top 20! I've been listening for a long time and decided it was time to pay back for all of that great music. I discovered the Gothard Sisters, who are from my town, right here on your podcast. Well, I really decided to support your podcast because you have expressed on many occasions your support for diversity in Celtic music and you have highlighted many female and LGBT artists. This touched me especially as many in these underrepresented groups struggle to find a voice. Thank you and keep up the great work. A devoted listener.” Dwayne Butcher commented on Patreon: “It is so unfortunate people are saying SJW as a slur. Keep up the great work! Will up my per episode contribution today.” Sterling SS emailed: “I’m dancing and listening to my freedom that my ancestors got to be in the USA” Jason S. emailed a photo: “G'day Marc, First time writer, long time listener. #ITC24: Sue Hackney, Jim McKenna and Rufus Black on Cobaw (part 2) In 2007, Cobaw Community Health Services tried to book a camp on Phillip Island for a weekend forum, for a group of young people identifying as same sex attracted. The camp manager said they wouldn't be welcome, because of the religious convictions of the Christian Brethren, which owned and ran the camp. The young people made a successful discrimination claim, and the camp's appeal to the Court of Appeal failed. The case raised basic questions about religious exemptions to anti-discrimination law which remain centrally important, and continue to be hotly contested.
#ITC23: Sue Hackney, Jim McKenna and Rufus Black on Cobaw (part 1) In June 2007, a staff member at Cobaw Community Health Services, Sue Hackney, tried to book a camp on Phillip Island for a weekend forum. She was booking on behalf of a group of young people identifying as same sex attracted. The camp manager said they wouldn't be welcome, because of the religious convictions of the Christian Brethren, which owned and ran the camp. The young people, and Cobaw, brought a complaint which ventilated one of the most significant issues in Australian public life: when should religious beliefs provide an exemption from anti-discrimination law?

Seven Golden Rules for Hyper Business Growth 1. Your business day starts the night before. Each evening I plan my next day's business activities. I write out a good old fashion "to do" list. 2. Set an alarm clock. Many entrepreneurs think because it's "my" business they don't need a schedule - that they can do whatever they want - wrong. I have seen this over and over. 3. Never work in your pajamas. Your mind set is one of the most important factors in determining your success. 4. Do not schedule meetings or take phone calls before noon. You are at your best first thing in the morning. 5. Take a mid-day exercise break. A study by Jim McKenna from the University of Bristol showed that exercise during the workday improves job performance. 6. Have lunch with a mentor, colleague or protégé once a week. We can all get caught up in our own little world. We are so busy with our families and careers. 7. Reconcile your "to do" list. At the end of your workday look at what you had planned to accomplish that day and look at what you actually accomplished. if you fell below 75%, you need to make some changes. Because this means you are not in control of your business, instead your business is in control of you. People who should listen to this show are entrepreneurs
