In episode 540, Dyutima Jha teaches us how to keep readers on our food blogs for longer by creating visually compelling narratives with our photos, and which common mistakes to avoid. Dyutima is an architect-turned commercial and editorial food photographer and podcaster based in Singapore. She is the first South Asian woman to host a food photography podcast, My Food Lens. After 15 years as an architect, designing healthcare facilities around the world, she found her passion in food styling and photography. Today, she has a successful business working with clients around the world and teaching other photographers how to do so as well. Her work has been featured in a range of food & photography magazines like Thrive magazine, Whalebone magazine etc. and she has worked with several prestigious clients like The Intercontinental Hotel Singapore, McCormick etc. In this episode, you'll learn about the importance of visual storytelling, lighting, angles, and consistency in creating compelling narratives that engage and retain the viewer's attention. Key points discussed: - Plan Food Photo Shoots in Advance: Use a storyboard to stay focused creatively and save time during a photo shoot. - Think of Your Recipe as a Story: Like a movie, there's a plot, hero, theme and genre. Use these elements to tell your story. - Bring Readers into Your Story Through the First Image: Improve first impressions with powerful opening photos that hook readers emotionally or visually - Activate the Viewer's Imagination: Create a sequence of events and narrate this through your photos using ingredients, movement and context. - Readers Disengage with Technically Weak Photos: Check lighting, camera angles, storytelling cohesion, and color editing in photos. - Readers Disengage with Disconnected Visuals: Do your photos match with the vibe, colors and branding of your website? Do they match the specific type of recipe? - Show Readers the Bigger Picture: As a final photo, include the context of where readers might enjoy the recipe; use props to narrate this visually. - Make Dull Food Look Appetizing: By adding contrasting colors using herbs or flowers and by using macro shots, you can make unappealing food look great. Joanna Quinn's debut novel, The Whalebone Theatre, is historical fiction at its finest. We are transported to southern England off the coast of Dorset, where we meet three unlikely heroes--Cristabel, Flossie, and Digby. They are siblings who grow up against the backdrop of the second world war. Their childhood consists of little supervision, and jaunts to the seaside where they discover a washed up whale, and turn its carcass into a local theatre. The theme of overcoming trial, heartache, and loss through the escape of art is prominent. Two of the heroes become spies for England during the war, and discover their true grit. The writing is mesmerizingly beautiful. Join us for this book club chat as we discuss the merits and memorable moments of this wonderfully weaved tale.
Here is the NLS annotation: The whalebone theatre DB 110521 Quinn, Joanna. Reading time 18 hours, 25 minutes. Read by Olivia Vinall. A production of National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, Library of Congress. Subjects: Historical Fiction Description: "One blustery night in 1928, a whale washes up on the shores of the English Channel. By law, it belongs to the King, but twelve-year-old orphan Cristabel Seagrave has other plans. She and the rest of the household—her sister, Flossie; her brother, Digby, long-awaited heir to Chilcombe Manor; Maudie Kitcat, kitchen maid; Taras, visiting artist—build a theatre from the beast's skeletal rib cage. Within the Whalebone Theatre, Cristabel can escape her feckless stepparents and brisk governesses, and her imagination comes to life. As Cristabel grows into a headstrong young woman, World War II rears its head. She and Digby become British secret agents on separate missions in Nazi-occupied France—a more dangerous kind of playacting, it turns out, and one that threatens to tear the family apart." -- Provided by publisher. Unrated. Commercial audiobook. The Fiction Old and New book group will be discussing "The Whalebone Theater" DB 110521 by Joanna Quinn on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Our facilitator for this group is Michelle Bernstein (hamletsweetlady@gmail.com).
The first chapter can make or break a reader's engagement with a story. We as writers must craft brilliant opening pages in order to hook those picky readers, so let's study the stories of others to see how they do it! We return to historical drama in Joanna Quinn's The Whalebone Theatre, and know what? I don't mind. The story is geared to follow Cristabel Seagrave from toddlerhood to adulthood spying on Nazis in France, so our first impression of the protagonist is her impish, defiant nature. Oh, this kid is great fun, and I wouldn't mind following the toddler Cristabel around for a whole novel. Quinn does marvelous work as a writer in keeping the prose vivid and active, while also throwing in the occasional childish term like "nothingy." It's a lovely balance for adult readers who may not appreciate the quirky language of a child, while also sounding true as a voice for a young character. We watch Cristabel meet her stepmother for the first time, and this occasion clearly marks a strained relationship for the future--any stepmother who refers to a child as "it" is not all that keen on children, to be sure! So while we didn't see the whalebones just yet, I enjoyed seeing much of Cristabel's personality and imagination shine through so much in this opening scene. Those are the character traits an author wants to establish early so that the protagonist's later choices not only propel the story forward, but also ring true to the character we're happy to know. And what will you learn from these opening pages? Let's find out! Cheers!
Few of us need reminding that childhood can be a difficult and challenging time; but it can also be a magical one. That duality is at the heart of The Whalebone Theater, the best-selling debut novel of Joana Quinn. Childhood is central, also, to Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 classic novel, The Secret Garden, in which a group of three young children discover the transformative magic of nature during the course of three seasons in a remote house in the Yorkshire moors. It is one of two books that Quinn has chosen for Shelf Life. The other is Michael Ondaatje's prize-winning novel, The English Patient, a deeply poetic story of love and betrayal, identity and class that takes place in an abandoned Italian villa in the waning days of the Second World War.

When we first meet Cristabel, the heroine of Joanna Quinn's debut novel, “The Whalebone Theatre,” she is only three. But she is already sure of herself, in the pure and defiant way that young children often are. She knows she was born to be a leader. But how does she get there? That's the story at the heart of Quinn's delightful book, which follows Cristabel and her half-siblings as they grow up on the family's lush estate in 1920s England. The grownups are dizzy with relief that World War I has ended, so they mostly exist in a haze of alcohol and amusements. The children are mostly left to themselves. That's how they end up staging their own theater, in the skeleton of a beached whale, which provides a backdrop and a direction to their young lives. When World War II breaks out, Cristabel and her siblings, now grown, find themselves in a more serious production: playing roles in the allied military effort. And they don't know how this story ends. Quinn's novel takes us from seaside England to occupied Paris, from the height of luxury to the horrors of war. “The Whalebone Theatre” was an instant best seller in the U.K., and a New York Times best seller. This week, on Big Books and Bold Ideas, she joined host Kerri Miller to talk about the insightfulness of children, how art helps us to recognize ourselves, and why — despite the glamour — she would not want to live in 1920s England. Guest: Joanna Quinn is as fiction writer with a background in journalism. “The Whalebone Theatre” is her first novel. She lives in Dorset, England, where her book is set. This week's guest is Jesse Joeckel, the founder, owner and designer of Whalebone Creative. Based in Montauk, New York, Whalebone describes itself as a lifestyle brand that's built around art, design, and surf culture. They sell super soft t-shirts, hoodies, hats and more since 2010. And they have become the definition of a very, very cool brand. Over the eleven years since he started Whalebone, Jesse has never strayed far from his definition of success. And happiness. Over the last few months, many, many people - maybe most people - have spent time thinking about what they want from life. Based on the number of people who are leaving their jobs during what has come to be known as the ‘Great Resignation', the answer is ‘not this.' Indeed, in some industries, a third of the people resigning have no clear idea about what they will do next or where. By the millions, people are challenging their own definitions of success. And even more fundamentally, their definitions of what it means to be happy.

O tom ví své i Richard Malovič, CEO stamilionové firmy Whalebone, která chrání uživatele internetu bez nutnosti instalovat software do zařízení. První případy opravdu neblahých konců už máme i v Česku. Klíčová otázka zní: Proč svět start-upů stále více mladých talentovaných lidí tak uhrančivě přitahuje, když většina z nich si vyláme zuby, přijde o nejlepší léta života, zničí si zdraví, reputaci a třeba i přijdou o rodinu? This week, Cinema Eclectica pitches its revivalist tent in the wild world of religious cinema, with Graham looking at the three films born-again exploitation movie director Ron Ormond made with fire-and-brimstone preacher Estus W Pirkle. On the other end of every possible scale, the Devil made Rob review Rosemary's Baby, Roman Polanski's classic Satanic chiller. Quite the classiest thing with a William Castle production credit, there. Mark's Bond retrospective, this week, covers the highs and lows of Pierce Brosnan's tenure. At first he looked inwincible, then he got the keys to an invisible car. And our new feature Streaming Spotlight looks at the glut of new films diverted to online releases during lockdown - kicking off with Andrew Kötting's The Whalebone Box, out now on Mubi. I hope you’re doing amazing despite the Coronavirus and the social distancing that’s taken over all of our lives. I know it sucks, but I hope you are safe and healthy. On the bright side, there were a LOT of opportunities to hear Celtic music over the past couple o’weeks despite St Patrick’s Day being effectively closed. And I keep hearing about more musicians going live. So make sure you check the news of your favorite bands. See who’s playing and watch one of their shows. And if you’re able, help them out. I said ratings. Looks like I messed up when I said reviews. But that’s still brilliant. Just 17 left. Go give your review. A quick additional note about St Patrick’s Day. I know it sucked that it was effectively shut down. I think we need to make Halfway to St Patrick’s Day as big St Paddy’s Day should’ve been this year. So go talk to your local pub or Celtic organizations. We have just over 5 months to plan. Let’s make it happen on September 17th! Oh! And I want send out a huge thanks to Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. She organized an impromptu St Patrick’s Day virtual festival on Facebook and Instagram. In another lifetime, I played drums in a band called “Whalebone”. Our lead guitarist/front man was a dynamic showman by the name of Dez Dickerson. After leaving the band in 1974 to pursue my newfound radio passion, Dez hooked up with an up and coming phenom named Prince. It has been fun, over the years, hearing him trade vocals on songs like “1999” and “Little Red Corvette” and watching him front his own band in the film “Purple Rain”. I am happy we were able to finally reconnect. What you are about to hear is the first time we have talked in 45 years! Today, I got to sit down for a chat with Faye Brennan. Faye is a talented writer and as an official day job she is a director at one of the biggest female magazines on the planet. It's the kind of high profile job a lot of women would die for with loads of perks and famous and interesting people to meet. In fact, Faye has interviewed celebrities such as world such as Chris Pratt, Lenny Kravitz and Ryan Reynolds, so I was truly humbled when she reached out to me a few months ago to interview me for her side hustle, Apres Surf! If you've been following my instagram stories, you may have noticed I got featured in faye's Instagram blog : Après Surf. Faye has a really interesting story and a very strong connection to the ocean that she explains in this conversation. We discover what ignited the spark to start Après Surf and where Faye is intending to do with this innovative project. I also ask Faye if working in such a huge magazine is just like the film the Devil Wears Prada, and how she felt when she landed the job. In fact, we also talk about how she sees the future of print magazines and Faye has some really good advice for anybody who is trying to create or develop a print magazine. I know that a lot are popping up all over the place, especially in surfing, and I know how hard it is to find companies to back your projects. Of course, we talk about Après Surf Co, which is a platform celebrating female wave chasers, beach style, after-sun fun, a deep love for the ocean—and conserving it. I really love the way that despite her top status in a very influential position, she's started her side hustle from scratch in such a modest way. Her Instagram blog is a joy to read and you will find all sorts of really cool tips for female surfers around the world. If you are curious about which surfing magazine Faye worked for in Montauk, it's actually Whalebone (links below). As Faye said in the episode, she would be stoked if you reached out to her and feature in Après Surf. So to get hold of her, you can find the Apres surf Instagram account at @Apres_surf_co and on apressurf.co or send her an email to apressurfco@gmail.com I love Faye's energy and authenticity in this exchange. I hope you do too. Lord Timothy Dexter was a lucky kind of eccentric from the 1700s. His life in one quick summary: married for money, made ridiculous money through luck, tried to hobnob with the wealthy but wasn’t up to snuff, terrible speller but had the money to published a book anyway, and faked his death. He was also a shitty eccentric--beating his wife when she didn't cry at his fake funeral. In episode 77, Strange Country co-hosts Beth and Kelly talk about what they'd do with gobs of money; likely invest in whalebone corsets. Theme music: Resting Place by A Cast of Thousands. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Henry Meger emailed: "Dia dhuit, Marc, I discovered your podcast last spring and have been entranced and charmed with it ever since as I catch up to date. Just wanted to send some personal thanks. My father has been playing Celtic guitar for most of his life and all of mine, so it's been in the house since day one. I thought I had heard it all, each corner and subgenre to be found, but my library has been greatly and duly humbled by your extensive and seasoned pallet. I've shared the podcast and many of its contents with my dad, and it has enriched our Celtic cosmos remarkably. I took the podcast with me last summer while studying abroad in Russia and it was a wonderful way to keep in touch with my roots during my commute. Having also spent time in non-Celtic Spain, the Galicia episode opened another door in my musical conception of Iberia. In short, Thank you!! An amateur flute player myself, I would love to hear a flute-heavy episode, and I'm sure all musicians who listen to the podcast would love their own instrument-themed episodes. Just a thought that has crossed my mind (not that you don't have plenty already!) Keep up the fantastic work---it's very much appreciated!" Thank you Henry. I haven't done a flute or whistle episode. Let me see what I can put together. I wish I had an easy way to search my archive for flute music. Sadly, I don't. But perhaps I can reach out to you and all my listeners. If you have heard some bands with flute or whistle, please email me the band names so I can make a possible list of the podcast. Jennifer Lohman emailed a picture: "While I am listening to your podcast from Terra Alta, WV (USA) 31 degrees here today-so the dogs & I are staying in." Stephen Reimann emailed: "Dear Celt Father, I am a big fan of your show and what you are doing to add breadth and depth to those who listen to Celtic music. I am an Account Manager for a major Pharmaceutical company which requires an extensive amount of driving. By extensive I mean on average 60K miles each year. Your podcast enables me to not only pass the time driving between accounts, but also increase my knowledge and love of all things musically Irish and Celtic. The theme diversity of your shows is stellar. Just like Christopher Walken’s SNL character, The Bruce Dickinson, needed “More Cowbell,” I need more bagpipes. Any chance of another Bagpipe theme’d show in the near future? Thank you for all you do to sharpen our proverbial musical sgian-dubhs." Stephen “Bow Tie Steve” Reimann (Rye-man) Thanks Bow Tie Steve. Yeah. You can never have enough bagpipes. It will have to be a few months, but I'll add that to the list as well. Maybe I should add both this and the flute show as milestones... Would you be interested in another bagpipe show as well. Drop me a line.

Seacht Suailci Na Maighdine Muire by Aoife ni Farragh from her album 'Aoife'. Hope you get a chance to listen to it and I wish you and your family all the best for 2017." Jeffrey Evans emailed a picture: "On the Celtic postcast, you're always asking what were doing when we're listening. Normally, that is difficult for me since I'm either listen to new episodes at work and there is a strict rule about taking pictures inside the plant fence or I'm listening to some favorite episodes that I have permanently downloaded as I'm falling asleep. Not today. It's probably the last decent day of the year for the Ohio Valley. I left work early and just sitting outside, cross stitching a celtic cross as a wedding gift for a friend as episode 154 plays."
