Navigating Market Turbulence: Tariffs, AI Opportunities, and Flexible Billing for MSPs with Karl Palachuk and Jay McCall

Business of Tech

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2025 39:08

The latest market turbulence has raised concerns about the impact of tariffs on business deals and the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) to serve as a lifeline for companies striving to do more with less. With tariffs on Chinese goods recently increased to 125% and a 90-day pause on other tariffs, the uncertainty in the market is palpable. Industry experts Jay McCall and Karl Palachuk discuss the implications of these changes, emphasizing the need for IT solution providers to adapt their strategies and focus on client relationships during these challenging times.Karl highlights the importance of becoming a trusted advisor to clients, especially during economic downturns. He encourages providers to engage in regular conversations with their clients to understand their needs and concerns. This proactive approach can help businesses navigate the current landscape, as some clients may be looking to invest in technology to gain a competitive edge when the market stabilizes. Jay echoes this sentiment, drawing parallels to past economic crises and noting that while some projects may be delayed or canceled, opportunities for digital transformation, particularly in AI, may arise. The discussion also touches on the risks associated with standardization in pricing and hardware delivery. As supply chain issues become more pronounced, the reliance on standardized hardware may become a liability for managed service providers (MSPs). Instead, the experts suggest focusing on the outcomes and results that clients desire, rather than the specific systems used to achieve those results. This shift in perspective could allow MSPs to remain competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing environment. Finally, the conversation emphasizes the need for flexibility in business models as uncertainty looms. While clients may seek shorter contracts or more adaptable pricing structures, providers are cautioned against lowering prices to compete. Instead, maintaining the value of services and fostering strong client relationships will be crucial for MSPs to weather the storm and emerge stronger when the economy rebounds. Host Karl Palachuk interviews Wes Hutcherson and Stuart Ashenbrenner from Huntress on the challenges and (and victories) of securing macOS endpoints.  As you know, MacOS represents a growing percentage of the business device operating system market, outperforming both Linux and ChromeOS. Since this is going to be a growing portion of the endpoints you support, it's good to know how you're doing to do that. And with so many "home" and personal devices now being used for company purposes, quick response is important as well. The panel addresses the challenges of the MacOS users - including their persistent reluctance to believe that their devices need protection at all! There is a false sense of security around MacOS, driven by old-school understandings of Mac security and the realities of well-funded adversaries on the dark web. MacOS malware now accounts for 6.2% of all endpoint OS malware. Half of all MacOS users have been affected by malware, hacking, or scams. You can expect that to grow as well. ----- Thanks to Huntress for sponsoring the SMB Community Podcast. More Tech Layoffs?   EY Announces Layoffs in Response to Economic Struggles   See: https://www.channele2e.com/news/ey-announces-layoffs-in-response-to-economic-struggles   "Less than a week after Broadcom finalized its $61 billion acquisition of VMware, layoffs began. This is a familiar pattern for the company, which followed a similar playbook with its acquisition of CA Technologies in 2018. Overall, it's estimated Broadcom will cut about 2,000 employees post-acquisition.   Google, Amazon, Snap, Splunk, LinkedIn, Cisco, MariaDB and SecureWorks all recently announced layoffs. Other mass layoffs recently included Intel, Wish and LinkedIn in the San Francisco Bay area. At the beginning of September, Rapid7 announced a restructuring plan following disappointing second-quarter results, resulting in the layoffs of about 18% of the company's workforce. Similarly, AppSec firm Snyk laid off 128 people in April. Cloud security vendor Zscaler announced layoffs after what it called a rough fiscal second quarter. Software tools giant Atlassian laid off 5% of its workforce as it “shifted priorities.”    ----   Our upcoming events: AUSTIN TX – MASTERMIND LIVE (March 28-29th) http://bit.ly/kernanmastermind https://kernanconsulting-mastermind.mykajabi.com/mastermind-event Use “EARLYBIRD” as the coupon code to save $200! What's New in the News    OPEN AI – blew up!   And ransomware attacks are on the RISE!    Ransomware attacks have surged in recent years; this has led to significant financial losses, data breaches and operational disruptions across various sectors. As of 2023, over 72% of organizations worldwide were affected by ransomware attacks, according to Statista.   That raises a question as to how malicious actors are able to successfully carry out these attacks on the majority of organizations. And one industry that is struggling to handle ransomware attacks is...healthcare.   In fact, Sophos revealed in its “The State of Ransomware in Healthcare 2023”  report that cybercriminals successfully encrypted data in nearly 75% of ransomware attacks. This is the highest rate of encryption in the past three years and a significant increase from the 61% of healthcare organizations that reported having their data encrypted last year.     ---   Our upcoming events: Jan 16-18th in Honolulu HI – MSSP Sales/Marketing workshop https://conference.fornixmarketing.com/hawaii-conference-3364   Contact James for a $500 discount code!    Our Social Links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-kernan-varcoach/ https://www.facebook.com/james.kernan https://www.facebook.com/karlpalachuk/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/karlpalachuk/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/amybabinchak/ https://www.facebook.com/amy.babinchak/

Segment Two: Five Minutes with a Smart Person - Dr. Lance Reichenberger --- Host James sits down with his friend, Dr. Lance Reichenberger. When Lance was only 11 years old, he began working with and programming computers. His father, an engineer, sometimes worked on a computer at home. When he was not using the machine for his professional work, he allowed young Lance to learn while playing with this computer. This was before even a dial-up modem, when transferring data required a 5 ½ inch floppy disk. He found there was not much on the hard drive, so he began rewriting the programs. He changed out the hardware, added capabilities and eventually added an early stage modem to access in the internet. Technology was a natural match for his abilities and his father encouraged him to use the natural ability to create a future. As a young man, he volunteered in the emergency room of a hospital learned a lot about medicine. This led him to become an EMT and paramedic with the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Although he had plans to become a doctor, those plans were sidetracked. He did, however, do a lot of the network cabling, computers, and programming at several medical organizations. He continues to be a subject matter expert in the area of medical technology. --- Segment Three: Notes on the News  Cage fight! Yup, it's our turn to give our two cents on Zuckerberg vs. Musk. Hansen explores the factors that contribute to success in business. According to the authors, one of the key lessons about culture is the importance of creating a culture of discipline. This means having a clear set of values and principles that guide decision-making, and a consistent approach to achieving goals. Additionally, the book emphasizes the need for a culture of productive paranoia, where leaders are constantly aware of potential threats and take proactive measures to mitigate them. Another important aspect of culture highlighted in the book is the need for a culture of innovation, where experimentation and risk-taking are encouraged and rewarded. Karl: give me that as a folk song chatGPT: Verse 1: Discipline is what we need To guide us on our journey With values and principles We'll make the right decisions Chorus: Great by choice, we'll be With a culture that's disciplined We'll succeed, you'll see With a clear path and vision Verse 2: Productive paranoia's key To stay ahead of the game We'll be aware and take action To keep us from going insane Chorus: Great by choice, we'll be With a culture that's paranoid We'll succeed, you'll see With a plan and strategy deployed Verse 3: Innovation is what we'll bring To keep us on top We'll experiment and take risks And never, ever stop Chorus: Great by choice, we'll be With a culture of innovation We'll succeed, you'll see With new ideas and invention Outro: With discipline, paranoia and innovation We'll be great by choice, you'll see With a culture that's strong and true We'll achieve success, it's guaranteed." The smart city concept will eventually affect everything … are we ready for elevators that know who we are? Topic 1: The Federal Communications Commission has published the initial draft of its revised high-speed internet coverage maps. The old maps were census-block based. The new maps are based on more detailed information from broadband providers. With the old system, a huge census block would be marked as served even if only one household had broadband. https://www.fcc.gov/news-events/notes/2022/11/18/new-broadband-maps-are-finally-here You can examine updated maps from here: https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home For an interactive map, start here and zoom in and out as desired: https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/location-summary/fixed Want to see how you can make money filling the gaps? Topic 1: Good News on the EV Front: Lithium Ion Batteries can be Recycled! https://www.axios.com/2022/11/10/audi-redwood-ev-battery-recycling Yes … we are headed for an EV world. No … there are not nearly enough batteries or charging stations or grid capacity to handle an EV world. But in a positive sign, it turns out that the rare Earth minerals used in LIon batteries do not degrade and can be recycled into new batteries. Increase supply. Reduce pollution. Recycle all those old battery items lying around your house. Win! https://www.imeche.org/news/news-article/the-big-battery-challenge-3-potential-alternatives-to-lithium-ion Topic 2: Nine in Ten SMBs Fear a Ransomware Attack    https://www.msspalert.com/cybersecurity-research/most-smbs-fear-ransomware-attack-amid-heightened-geopolitical-tensions/   A new study from OpenText reveals that nearly 9 in 10 SMB IT security professionals fear a ransomware attack on their organization … yet most do not plan to increase cybersecurity spending. Is this a failure to communicate … or a case of intentional ignorance? --- Topic 3: Is Rude Behavior Contagious Rude behavior on the rise: https://www.axios.com/2022/11/10/rude-behavior-frontline-workers “Employees who experience rudeness at work are less satisfied with their jobs, less engaged with their work, less productive, less helpful, and less creative,” Taylor said. https://www.uschamber.com/co/start/strategy/how-rudeness-can-ruin-your-workplace Sponsor Memo: Gozynta  Do you like getting paid? Episode 189: U.S. drop in productivity, Cloud Computing to grow, US Banks spend $1 Bill on Ransomware

Topic 1: U.S. workers have gotten way less productive.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2022/10/31/productivity-down-employers-worried-recession/ No one is sure why. So we get to make up reasons!  Can this be attributed to the Quiet Quitting Phenomon? Maybe. But maybe not. (Again, we get to come up with our own theories today.) Perhaps, complexity is the enemy of productivity; thus, remote working might not give our brains enough buffering time between each tasks than say walking from the meeting hall to your cubicle would. Also, as we settle into a sort of kind not really post-pandemic world, we can surmise that the line between our work lives and home lives has become less muddled. And maybe, just maybe, this means we aren't being less productive, rather we are setting healthy work to home boundaries at the expense of a project deadline...Again, just speculating.    Topic 2: Spending for Cloud Computing in 2023 is Forecast to Grow … a Lot! https://siliconangle.com/2022/10/31/gartner-spending-public-cloud-services-will-exceed-591b-2023/ In a slight surprise, and a noticeable change of tone, Gartner forecasts that spending on cloud computing – across all 6 categories they include in the segment – will rise in 2023. Just because spending is down in some categories doesn't mean it will be down in all categories. SaaS / PaaS / IaaS / DaaS / CMaaS / BPaaS. So many awkward acronyms! Topic 3: US Banks spent over $1 Billion on Ransomware in 2021 ...that they reported! https://www.techradar.com/news/us-banks-processed-over-dollar1-billion-in-ransomware-payments-last-year  Time to head into the cloud of uncertainty!  Sponsor Memo: TimeZest  Does coordinating meetings and help desk calls frustrate you and your clients?  Wouldn't it be easier if you could automate this process and it integrated with ConnectWise Manage or Autotask?    TimeZest is schedulig automation that gives you control of your schedule and removes the frustration of calendar ping pong.  As the only solution specifically designed for MSPs, it integrates with your PSA to schedule appointments right in your workflow.  And the best part?
