Badges, emblems, signs, and stickers: this week’s Carmudgeon show is all about why so many cars have badges for seemingly irrelevant things. Trim-level badging apparently helps with resale values, but why is it necessary to tell the cars behind you that you have Tuned Port Injection?Jason and Derek take an illustrated trip down memory lane, discussing the coolest (and silliest) badges ever put on cars. And why having a lighted star on the front of your Mercedes is actually a poverty badge — but having no badge on your V-12 E32 750iL could be a sign of exclusivity. Some of the badges covered in this episode include: Disc brakes, ABS, Honda’s ALB, Automatic, Automatique, Dynaflow and other transmission badges, 4WS, 16V, 24V, 32V, Twin Cam, EFI, MPFI, TBI, Tuned Port Injection, Twin H Power, Tri Power, Turbo, Turbo Diesel, Turbodiesel, V8-6-4, GT4, Alltrac, Fuel Injection, 5-speed, Overdrive, IRS, BMW 1800 TI/SA, SH-AWD, AWD, 4WD, 4 Wheel Drive, All Wheel Drive, Injection Electronique, Twin I Beam, Big Horn, King Ranch, Isuzu P’Up, Inezione, 4Porte, Quattroporte, Quattro, 4Matic, 4Motion, Q4, xDrive, SH-AWD, eAWD, TSI, TFSI, TDI, GDI, Hybrid, Anti-Theft Radio, VTEC, iVTEC, VVT, VVTi, VVTL-i, VVEL, Dual Motor, 16 Ventiler, P100D, Ludicrous, DMP, Cambiocorsa, Ferrari F1, Advancetrac, Advancetrac RST, Stabillitrak, PZEV, SIPS, Side Impact Protection System, GL, EX, DX, LE, Si, LX, S, SE, SEL, Lambda Sond, EV, Electric Vehicle, Kompressor, Turbo, BiTurbo, V8, V12, AMG, Radial Tuned Suspension, Handling By Lotus, TR5 PI, Magnum PI, 308 Magnum PI, Police Interceptor, DTS, Deville Touring Sedan, GTS, 911 GTS, 928 GTS, Celica GTS, Cayman GTS, Boxster GTS, Porsche GTS, Ferrari GTSThe Carmudgeon Show is a comedic, information-filled conversation with Jason Cammisa and Derek Tam-Scott, two car enthusiasts who are curmudgeonly beyond their years. Proving you don’t have to be old to be grumpy, they spend each episode talking about what’s wrong with various parts of the automotive universe. Despite their best efforts to keep it negative, they usually wind up laughing, happy, and extolling their love for cars. Which just makes them angrier and more bitter.Jason Cammisa is an automotive journalist, social-media figure, and TV host with over 250 million views on YouTube alone. Jason’s deeply technical understanding, made possible by a lifelong obsession with cars, allows him to fully digest what’s going on within an automobile — and then put it into simple terms for others to understand. Also, a Master’s Degree in Law trained him to be impossible to argue with. Derek Tam-Scott still tries. He’s a young automotive expert with old-man taste in cars, and a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering — which means he knows how to be civil to Jason. Or at least he tries. With a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced the world’s most iconic cars. And hated most of them. GM is making enhancements to Energy Assist, a standard feature available in the myChevrolet mobile app for Bolt EV owners. Energy Assist, first available for customers back in 2017, currently enables Bolt EV owners to plan and manage their routes more effectively, locate available charging stations – both along their route and in the area – monitor their route and receive real-time alerts if their range projections change dramatically. Energy Assist is integrated with data from the vehicle, which enables intelligent planning and precise charge time predictions. GM is now displaying dynamic data from charging networks EVgo and ChargePoint within Energy Assist, and information provided by charging networks includes real-time data on charge station status to indicate if a charging station is available. At eligible charging stations, owners can now link their EVgo account to activate and pay for charging sessions right from the myChevrolet mobile app, eliminating the need to toggle between apps and streamline the payment process. Eligible charging stations are noted within the myChevrolet mobile app.   TESLA FIRMWARE REVEALS ~110 KWH BATTERY PACK "Tesla is working on a new 110 kWh battery pack configuration that can stretch range well beyond 400 miles, according to a new discovery made in Tesla’s battery management system (BMS) firmware." says Teslarati: "Jason Hughes, a notable Tesla owner and hacker who first uncovered the company’s plans for a “P100D” variant in 2016, found references to a larger battery pack capacity in the latest BMS firmware. “There is a packID that starts life set to ~109 kWh usable (400+ miles),” noted Hughes via Twitter, further suggesting that Tesla might be preparing for a battery pack as large as 115 kWh in capacity when factoring Tesla’s battery reserve. Additionally, Hughes discovery points to a new battery pack configuration with 108 cells per group at ~450 volts per pack that could very well be a universal design to replace the aging Model S and Model X battery pack, while centralizing architecture for the Model 3 and upcoming Model Y."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-110-kwh-battery-pack-400-miles-range/   A LOOK INSIDE THE NEW LOTUS EVIJA PRODUCTION FACILITY "The new assembly hall is next to the Lotus test track where each of the 130 Evijas to be hand-assembled will be tested before delivery. As energy density increases, more energy can be extracted from a battery pack of the same weight. “Battery energy densities keep getting better,” Colin McKerracher, Head of Advanced Transport at BloombergNEF, said. “They’ve almost tripled at the cell level since 2010.”. McKerracher commented about battery pricing as well, noting that the price of lithium-ion batteries has continued to fall in recent years. The trend is expected to continue in 2020, with BloombergNEF estimating a price drop from $156/kWh in 2019 to $135/kWh in 2020."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/19/bloombergnef-lithium-ion-battery-cell-densities-have-almost-tripled-since-2010/   AMERICAN MANGANESE ANNOUNCES UP TO 99.72 PERCENT PURITY FROM RECYCLING TEST "American Manganese Inc. However, the tested Taycan Turbo S went "a significant 5.7 mph faster with a 10.47-second, 130.7-mph pass.""   https://insideevs.com/news/399558/porsche-taycan-quarter-mile-record/   PORSCHE TAYCAN REPORTEDLY GETTING ENHANCED BATTERY PACK "Porsche is reportedly planning to roll out an enhanced battery pack for Taycan Turbo, Turbo S, and 4S." says Teslarati: "The news about the Porsche Taycan’s enhanced battery pack come amid a barrage of negative reports about the electric car, many of which were driven by the vehicle’s subpar EPA range ratings. Whether it will come as a software or hardware update, this development can help reshape the negative narrative around the Porsche Taycan so far. In December, the Environmental Protection Agency estimated the range of the Taycan Turbo at 201 miles per charge, which shows it lags behind competitors such as Tesla, Audi, and Jaguar. Volkswagen and “Volkswagen und Audi Partnerverband” (Volkswagen and Audi partner association) have agreed a new sales model for the all-electric ID. family in Germany. A format similar to the agency model for major customers that has already proven its worth over many years will also apply for ID. models sold to private customers and small commercial enterprises. Following the go-ahead from retail partners, the agency agreement is to be added to the new dealer contracts that come into effect from April.   In their role as agents, dealers make the arrangements for selling the ID. family to private customers and small commercial enterprises. This primarily relates to acquisition, sales consultation, organizing test drives, transaction processing and vehicle handover in coordination with Volkswagen. The customer’s preferred dealer receives a commission and a bonus identical to showroom-based business, even if the vehicle is bought online. At the same time, the partner is no longer tasked with vehicle financing and the sales process is simplified because the partner no longer needs to negotiate the price.   https://www.volkswagen-newsroom.com/en/press-releases/volkswagen-and-partner-association-agree-new-sales-model-for-id-family-in-germany-5793   LEVC STARTS MAKING RANGE EXTENDER VANS "The maker of Britain’s iconic black cabs is building a plug-in hybrid van that can travel for 377 miles without recharging or filling up, in a bid to win over long-distance delivery firms and other companies that rely on purely gasoline vehicles." says Bloomberg.com: "The as-yet unnamed one-ton van goes on sale in October and is derived from the TX5 London taxi launched two years ago. The vehicle can run for 80 miles on its electric motor, after which a 1.5.-liter “range extender” engine kicks in to recharge the battery and increase its span to almost five times that. “You get zero emissions in the city but you can also drive the length of the country with the range extender, so range anxiety becomes a thing of the past. LEVC, owned by China’s Geely sold 2,500 TX cabs last year, almost all of them in the U.K. That was more than double the total for 2018. That still leaves huge untapped capacity at its plant near Coventry in central England, which is capable of churning out 20,000 autos annually.”   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-19/range-busting-electric-van-targets-parcel-firms-to-plumbers       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   Are you happy to pay extra for add-on features or apps for your EV, after you’ve bought it?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #645   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 18th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MAKING MACH-E A MUSTANG WAS A MASTER STROKE BY FORD From John Neff, Global Editor in Chief or Motor1: "You’ve got Tesla selling roughly 77.7 percent of all electric vehicles in the U.S. The Tesla Model 3 alone represents around 60 percent of total EV sales in this country. The rest of the market is left for over a dozen other EVs to divide amongst themselves. The Mustang Mach-E is taking aim, though, at the upcoming Tesla Model Y, a crossover-ish version of the most popular EV in the world, the Model 3 sedan. What Ford has smartly done is make matching the Model Y spec-for-spec a must. The Mustang Mach-E and Model Y both start in the low $40K-range. They both have a maximum range of about 300 miles. Their 0-60 times will both range from around 5.5 seconds for standard models to 3.5 seconds for performance models. And they both have four doors, seat at least five people, and can carry a lot of cargo. Indeed, if you were looking only at their specs on paper, you couldn’t tell these two cars apart."   https://www.motor1.com/features/382774/mustang-mach-e-name-genius/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E DETAILS WARRANT THUNDEROUS WELCOME CleanTechnica give their rundown of the tech: "When it comes to propulsion, the Mustang Mach-E follows the same basic layout as Tesla vehicles. A drive unit sits between the rear wheels, and an optional drive unit sits between the front wheels. Lower packages for the vehicle will come with just the rear drive unit, while higher-end vehicles will come with a supplemental unit in the front for more power and better handling. The most powerful model, the GT Performance, will come with 459 HP and 612 lb-ft of torque. The pack will come in two sizes: 75.7 kWh for the standard range models, and 98.8 kWh for the long-range models.the pack will use flat pouch cells instead of cylindrical cells. While seemingly difficult to cool (Nissan didn’t even bother to cool its pouch cells in the LEAF), Ford did put an extensive cooling system with aluminum fins between all cells to cool them as evenly as possible under even extreme conditions. Will it beat a P100D or the upcoming Roadster? No. But the Mustang was never really meant to be the fastest drag car. Pony Cars are supposed to be smaller multi-role sporty vehicles within the reach of the masses and young people. People are already asking whether this is a “Tesla Killer,” and that’s not really even the point."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/17/ford-mustang-mach-e-the-basics/   GREAT ARTISTS STEAL Seth at Electrek gives us some insight to where the reveal was: "As the vans full of Mach E journalists pulled off the 105 highway, I was shocked to see SpaceX headquarters and the adjacent Tesla Design studio in the background. We were pulling into the hanger where Tesla holds all of its Los Angeles events. Journalists were looking out for CYBRTRKs (OK, me too). I was calculating the odds that this was some sort of coincidence. How many places are there in the Los Angeles area to have a car event? To use the same spot that Tesla often uses seemed a little…ballsy. At every press briefing from interior/exterior design, center stack, battery, motor, etc there was one thread that bound the project together: that Ford considered this an urgent project in both time and significance. It is basically Ford’s do-or-die project and nowhere is that more obvious than their choice to use their most iconic brand: Mustang. If this fails, so does Mustang."   https://electrek.co/2019/11/17/great-artists-steal-why-fords-mustang-mach-e-was-inspired-by-tesla-in-all-the-right-ways/   2021 FORD MUSTANG MACH-E WILL PLEASE EV FANS Car and Driver get into the specs of the Mustang range: "The Mustang Mach-E will come in a choice of five versions, only two of which will be available initially: the Premium and the limited-quantity First Edition, both slated to reach customers in late 2020. The Premium model comes with a choice of standard or extended-range batteries and rear- or all-wheel drive, while the First Edition comes only with all-wheel drive and the extended-range battery. Either way, the batteries are paired with permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors and located under the floor of the vehicle. Range will start at 210 miles for the standard-range battery and all-wheel drive and reach as high as 300 miles for the extended-range battery on a rear-wheel-drive model. The Mustang Mach-E features three driving modes named Whisper, Engage, and Unbridled. Each offers specific changes to the driving experience such as steering tweaks, varied pedal feel, gauge-cluster graphics, and specifically tuned sound."   https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a29810295/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-photos-info/?src=socialflowTW&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social-media&utm_campaign=socialflowTWCD   FORD UNVEILS ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV TO CHALLENGE TESLA DOMINANCE Ford went an entirely new direction with the door handles on the Mustang Mach-E. You won’t find any Tesla  lookalike door handles here. The doors seem to be lacking handles at all. A closer look though reveals illuminated buttons on the B and C pillars.   It’s a seemingly small detail, but so many automakers ignore that their customers have smartphones and want to put these devices somewhere other than a cup holder. Behold the tech tray, which has a wireless charging pad.   The 15.5-inch screen will get a lot of attention, perhaps because its location and vertical placement is reminiscent of the Tesla Model S. But then there’s the physical dial placed on the bottom of the screen to control the volume.   Ford is hardly the first to move away from leather for its interior. Tesla has dropped leather and the Porsche  Taycan is also vegan. Now the interior of the Mustang Mach-E also qualifies.   there is something interesting about this 4.8-cubic-foot frunk. It’s drainable and plastic lined. Josh Greiner, senior interior designer on the Mach-E, was quick to note during a backgrounder prior to the unveiling that the frunk could be packed with ice and used while tailgating.   https://techcrunch.com/2019/11/17/mustang-mach-e-5-tech-and-design-details-that-stood-out/   UP CLOSE WITH FORD’S ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV From The Verge: "Take away the Mustang badging and the tri-bar headlights and taillights, and I think Ford’s new EV looks a decent amount like some of its more luxe direct competition, almost like a cross between the Mercedes-Benz EQC, the Jaguar I-Pace (especially at the rear haunches), but with some BMW SUV shaping thrown in, too. That’s a testament to the work done by “Team Edison,” the group inside Ford that has been developing the Mach-E since mid-2017 after pivoting away from a Focus-based electric car. That we’re already knee deep in these conversations and arguments feels like progress of a sort, as opposed to a few years ago when getting people to talk about electric cars, let alone feel something about them, felt like pulling teeth or just plain impossible"   https://www.theverge.com/2019/11/18/20970193/ford-electric-mustang-mach-e-first-look-photos-video-la-auto-show-2019   AN ELECTRIC MUSTANG SUV? BELIEVE IT MotorTrend have a massive 74 photo gallery, and say: "There are millions of Mustang fans out there—why not leverage their love of the model and make something way cooler than a dorky compliance car? Do you think the front-engine Porsche Panamera looks just like the rear-engine 911 by accident? No way, dude. All Porsches must answer to the 911 and, at the same time, milk that same 911 for any and all credibility and sex appeal. Looks like the same will be true for Ford and the Mustang. I call that smart."   https://www.motortrend.com/cars/ford/mustang-mach-e/2021/2021-ford-mustang-mach-e-electric-suv-photos-performance-release-date/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQS ELECTRIC FLAGSHIP INTERIOR SPIED "The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan has been spied once again. There isn't much to report on the exterior, but our spy photographer managed to get shots of the interior, giving us our first glimpse inside." says Joel at Autoblog: "While the center stack is covered up, we can tell that the interior of the EQS will be very similar to that of the next-generation S-Class. In front of the driver is a widescreen display for instruments like that of current Mercedes products. But it isn't flanked by a similarly sized screen for infotainment. Instead, the EQS appears to have a massive touchscreen and touch-sensitive panel hiding underneath the fabric covering. This is in keeping with the concept's design, though the production panel may be more flat and squared-off."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/10/29/mercedes-benz-eqs-interior-spy-shots/?icid=autoblog|trend|mercedes-benz-eqs-electric-flagship-interior-spied   LAMBORGHINI AND MIT PATENT A NEW TECHNOLOGY FOR SUPERCAPACITORS The collaboration between Automobili Lamborghini and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has produced a major initial result: a patent for an innovative synthetic material that will serve as the technological base for a new generation of supercapacitors. Further research will  explore additional optimization of the properties of the material, and its production on an increasingly larger scale. Supercapacitors already represent a winning solution in high-performance motorsport applications by virtue of their exceptional power and durability specifications, and they promise to become an essential technology for years to come thanks to Automobili Lamborghini.   the supercapacitor provides enough power to the e-motor to deliver an extra 34 horsepower. Lamborghini uses this to smooth out acceleration, bridging the gaps in power delivery that occur when the mechanical transmission changes gear. Lamborghini says this approach removes any jerkiness that would normally occur during a shift. Because supercapacitors can be charged and discharged symmetrically, they make for an incredibly efficient means of providing a short but strong electric assist in a vehicle being driven around a track. The supercapacitor is discharged during acceleration and recharged during braking, meaning in that situation the e-motor virtually never lacks the power it needs to do its job.   QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?”     I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.

Show #578   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 13th September 2019. TESLA PERMIT APPLICATION HINTS AT NEW FREMONT ASSEMBLY LINE "Tesla Inc. has applied for a permit from the city home to its lone assembly plant that hints the electric-car maker could be planning another assembly line." says Bloomberg: "The application to the city of Fremont, California, describes the project it’s seeking a permit for as “GA5 demo and rough grading.” GA refers to general assembly, and Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has previously said that Tesla has been running several lines to produce the Model 3, S and X. Space is tight at the factory, with workers already making some Model 3 sedans on an assembly line under a massive tent erected outside the facility."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-09/tesla-permit-application-hints-at-another-fremont-assembly-line   THE HONDA E ELECTRIC CAR DEBUTS WITH OFFICIAL PRICING BEFORE SUMMER LAUNCH "Honda has released the first official images of its new honda e electric vehicle ahead of its summer launch. Unveiled for the first time during the Frankfurt Motor Show" according to the website DesignBoom: "Two 12.3-inch LCD touchscreens in the center form an infotainment display, while an 8.8-inch screen acts as the driver’s instrument cluster. it also comes equipped with a personal assistant that lets users control certain functions by saying ‘OK honda’. away from the car, honda e owners can use the my honda+ smartphone application, with features like charging point navigation, climate control and vehicle condition reports. the honda e’s 134-hp spec starts at £26,160 (approximately €29,470/$32,300), with the more powerful priced at £28,660 (about €32,180/$35,300). customers can make a reservation for priority ordering online in UK, germany, france and norway, or register their interest in other european markets on honda national websites. the honda e will start to ship later in summer 2020."   https://www.designboom.com/technology/honda-e-electric-car-pricing-09-13-2019/   TESLA IS NOW INSTALLING FULL SELF DRIVING HARDWARE 3 UPGRADE "The first confirmed upgrade to Tesla’s new Full Self Driving hardware version 3 (HW3) took place today after a customer took his 2018 Tesla Model S P100DL into the Santa Barbara service center to get a new HEPA filter." says CleanTechnica "After the service, Twitterer and longtime Tesla supporter Sofiaan Fraval noticed that a line on his service documents indicated that the new hardware had been installed at the appointment as well. Sofiaan went on to clarify that the HW3 upgrade was currently only being offered to Model S and X owners, but just the fact that the upgrades have started is sure to get anyone who purchased the FSD suite excited. The new HW3 cannot yet be requested by customers for installation, as it is only being installed by eligible vehicles that come in for other service at service centers that have the new hardware and have been trained to install it. Even if you think your vehicle qualifies, you may not get the new HW3 installed at a service appointment. The arrival of HW3 currently only impacts Tesla owners running HW2 who have purchased the FSD software stack."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/11/tesla-installs-first-customer-upgrade-to-full-self-driving-hardware-3/   HIGHLY MODIFIED TESLA MODEL S P100D+ SPOTTED TESTING NEAR NURBURGRING First up from Road & Track: "To set a time, you need to rent the track privately. We're now hearing that Tesla has done just that. A source on the ground has informed R&T that a time could be set next week. Our source told us that the Nurburgring issued a schedule change for September 21st, with a 30 minute private window carved out of a session that already had public laps and Ring taxi laps on the calendar. There is also the possibility of lap timing in a session on the 18th, though it doesn't sound like that session would be private. Carving out that time, from a session that was previously booked and was guaranteed to make the track money, is an expensive proposition."   And from InsideEVs: "According to our spy photographers: "...we’ve spied Tesla at a private test facility not far from the Nürburgring prepping a Model S for a run at the lap record. The Model S Tesla is prepping for the record attempt does not appear to be stock. We can see wider fender flares, aggressive wheels and tires, and a trunk lip spoiler. From what we heard the tires where Michelin Cup 2 R for that extra grip and we also spotted a roll cage inside the car." Additionally, it seems the lower grille opening is bigger to enhance cooling. And if you zoom in on shots of the rear badging, it seems to display P100D+."   In the comments from eric W: "Pictures 7 and 12 show back of car and it looks to me like it has "P100D+" on it. The +Plus is what they used for the original P85 to P85+ to add track enhanced features, so done in past. Like the article says, new Model S P100D+ added to ordering studio makes it all legit. If it beats Taycan, how much could they charge for it? They have +$140K to work with and still come in under Taycan Price?"   https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a28999141/tesla-could-set-a-nurburgring-lap-time-on-september-21st/   https://insideevs.com/news/370314/tesla-model-s-spy-nurburgring/   TESLA MODEL S BREAKS LAGUNA SECA LAP RECORDS "Following the recent launch of the Porsche Taycan, Musk appears to be on a mission to show that Tesla’s vehicles are still the highest-performance EVs available today." writes Electrek: "While they couldn’t get things done in Germany, Tesla tried for its own record at home at the Laguna Seca racetrack. Musk said that they broke the fastest lap record for 4-door vehicles. Laguna Seca has become somewhat of a proving ground for electric vehicles in recent years. Last year, the record for the fastest production EV lap has changed hands several times."   https://electrek.co/2019/09/11/tesla-model-s-breaks-laguna-seca-lap-records-elon-musk/   SEAT MII ELECTRIC IS THE CHEAPEST VW TRIPLET "Today at Frankfurt Motor Show 2019, SEAT announced the price of the Mii Electric in Germany, making it the cheapest VW triplet." according to Push EVs: "Anyway, the VW triplets are the first electric cars with decent range (260 km in WLTP) that we can really call affordable. The brand’s first electric model can be purchased starting at €145 per month with no down payment with a 36-month leasing formula in Germany or outright for €16,300 (including government and brand subsidies)."   SEAT Mii Electric Germany: 20.650 euros (before subsidies) and 16.300 euros (after subsidies)   ŠKODA CITIGOe iV Germany: 20.950 euros (before subsidies) and 16.570 euros (after subsidies)   Volkswagen e-up Germany: 21.975 euros (before subsidies) and 17.595 euros (after subsidies)   These are all the same car, so checking out the specs from the VW e-UP: "The updated e-Up! is not likely to receive any major styling changes – the main difference being its underpinnings. Thanks to a larger 32.3kWh battery (up from 18.7kWh), the e-Up! is now able to travel 161 miles on a full charge – a sharp rise over the last car’s 99-mile range. It’s also able to charge at a 40kW rate, meaning that by using a rapid charger its batteries will be able to be topped up to 80 per cent from near-flat in an hour. The 82bhp electric motor remains the same – enabling a 0-60mph time of 11.7 seconds and a top speed of 81mph."   https://pushevs.com/2019/09/10/seat-mii-electric-is-the-cheapest-vw-triplet/   https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/updated-volkswagen-e-up-ev-set-to-debut-at-frankfurt-motor-show   TESLA DOUBLES SUPERCHARGING REFERRAL BONUS TO 2,000 FREE MILES IN Q3 SALES PUSH "Tesla’s referral program has been an effective tool for the company to promote car sales. By using a referral code or link to order your new Tesla, both you (the buyer) and the referring owner get free Supercharging. Until today, that bonus was 1,000 miles of free Supercharging for buyer and referrer. But Tesla just announced that it is doubling that bonus to 2,000 free Supercharging miles for any Tesla car ordered on or after September 10, 2019 and delivered before October 1, 2019." reports CleanTechnica: "Unlike previous referral bonuses which only required that the car be ordered by the deadline, this time, Tesla is requiring that the car be delivered by the deadline. So those who want to take advantage of this offer may need to select an available “inventory” model from their local Tesla showroom. Though, Tesla has tightened up its delivery rates lately, so it is possible that you could custom order a Tesla today and have it delivered with your exact specifications by the October 1 deadline."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/10/tesla-doubles-supercharging-referral-bonus-to-2000-free-miles-in-q3-sales-push/       QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week. Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 6th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   CONGRATULATIONS NISSAN The Nissan LEAF today became the first electric car in history to surpass 400,000 sales, solidifying the model’s leading role in the global shift toward more sustainable mobility. Introduced in 2010 as the world’s first mass-market electric vehicle, the Nissan LEAF has led the way in making the excitement and convenience of electric driving accessible to non-luxury buyers. Less than a decade ago, electric cars were seen as a niche product, and LEAF customers were mostly “early adopters.”   “AN ELECTRIC PORSCHE DRIVES JUST AS SPORTY AS ANY OTHER PORSCHE” Electromobility is the dominant theme of the Geneva Motor Show. At the Volkswagen Group Night, Porsche presented the Panamera Sport Turismo with hybrid drive and charging station for example.  Simon Vogt (E-Services - Sales & Operations) said: “Anyone who buys an electric or hybrid model from Porsche is offered a seamless and reliable charging experience and does not have to worry about charging. Everything is prepared. As soon as the customer wants it, the navigation system reliably guides them to a suitable charging station. There he simply inserts the plug and charges the desired range. Thanks to Plug and Charge, tiresome authentication processes are a thing of the past. Payment is also made automatically via the Porsche Charging Service. Put simply: car and charging station recognize each other as soon as the charging plug is inserted. The electricity price is also fixed, so that the amount due is simply debited from the customer's personal account. In principle, all drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles can charge via the Porsche Charging Service." And on the subject of performance he says: "With optimum drive technology and the right vehicle concept, the Porsche characteristics can be exploited even further through its electric models. For example, the center of gravity of the Taycan is lower than that of the 911, thanks to the underbody battery. Therefore, an electric Porsche is at least as sporty as a combustion engine."   $35,000 TESLA MODEL 3 LEADING TO PRICE CUTS ON CHEVY BOLT "Regardless of our previous reports that high demand is pushing up the price of the Hyundai Kona Electric at some dealerships, it appears Chevrolet dealers are taking the $35,000 Tesla Model 3 seriously and adjusting prices according."writes Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "The Chevrolet Bolt is seeing discounts as high as $7,000. One of our avid readers from the state of Oregon has been tracking 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV pricing at local dealerships." The headline price is $37,000 and of course there are federal and state level incentives too.   https://insideevs.com/35000-tesla-model-3-leading-price-cuts-chevy-bolt/   TESLA MODEL S CALLED AMERICA’S “GREATEST MUSCLE CAR” "Former Top Gear host and current The Grand Tour presenter James May recently experienced the joys and exhilaration of Ludicrous Mode, courtesy of the Tesla Model S P100D." Reports Simon for Teslarati: " May mentioned several of the vehicle’s merits in his review, such as its power, technology, and its quiet, comfortable ride. The former Top Gear host even acknowledged the vehicle as America’s next-generation muscle car. “The Tesla Model S P100D is the greatest muscle car America has ever produced — which means, it’s the greatest muscle car the world has ever produced,” May commented. May did mention that the vehicle is unique in the way that Tesla is unique, even if some of the cars’ basic characteristics such as its panels have not reached the level of refinement as entries from veteran automakers. Pointing out some of the P100D’s quirky features that are based on Elon Musk’s sense of humor such as Fart Mode, May notes that there is simply no other car like the Model S on the road today, and from an automaker that is unlike anyone else in the industry."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-s-p100d-james-may-review/   BOB LUTZ SAYS TESLA SHOULD AND SHOULDN'T HAVE RETAILS STORES Mark Kane at InsideEVs reports: “Bob Lutz, former GM Chairman, was interviewed a few days ago by CNBC about Tesla and he doesn’t believe that Tesla will be able to shift sales entirely online, by the way of the introduction of $35,000 Model 3 Standard battery option.” Bob Lutz said: “I always said it was totally ridiculous to own your own dealership, you own the real estate, you own the people, you own the new car inventory, you own the used car inventory – a massive misallocation of company capital. So now they’re getting out of that, they’re gonna close stores, they’re going to try to do all the sales online. I don’t see how that’s gonna work. Who’s gonna take the trade-in, who’s gonna take the used cars, who’s gonna provide service with no stores there.”   https://insideevs.com/bob-lutz-skeptical-tesla-online-sales-video/   MITSUBISHI ENGELBERG TOURER MAKES GLOBAL PREMIERE AT 2019 GENEVA MOTOR SHOW Named after the famous ski resort in central region of Switzerland, best known for its panoramic views, well-groomed runs and challenging off-piste skiing and snowboarding, the Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer is a Twin Motor, 4WD, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) which delivers high levels of performance in the most challenging weather conditions and on all road surfaces. It combines this with the long cruising range inherent to the PHEV, allowing journeys out of town and to places with no charging infrastructure.  The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer has an EV cruising range of over 43 miles/70 km (WLTP cycle) and with a fully charged battery and full fuel tank it has a total cruising range of over 434 miles/700 km (WLTP).   NIO SCRAPS FACTORY PLANS, ANNOUNCES $1.4 BILLION NET LOSS, STOCK FALLS "Chinese EV startup Nio has announced that it won’t be building its own manufacturing plant in Shanghai after all." Reports Phil at Electrek: "Nio released its Q4 and full 2018 financial results on Tuesday, and the company said the agreements it reached in 2017 to build its own manufacturing plant in Jia Ding, Shanghai have been terminated. Nio will continue to use its existing plant with state-owned JAC Motors to build its cars. The company says the agreement will “give it capacity and flexibility to support its market penetration and growth plans for the next two to three years.” The company reported $720 million in revenue for 2018, but it also posted a $1.4 billion net loss, nearly doubling its losses from the previous year."   https://electrek.co/2019/03/06/nio-scraps-factory-plans-announces-1-4-billion-net-loss-stock-falls/   BMW X3 XDRIVE30E HEADLINES A NEW AND OVERHAULED PHEV RANGE BMW is touting its new and improved range of plug-in hybrids at the Geneva Motor Show. At the volume end, the BMW X3 xDrive30e goes into production in December this year and puts a plug-in port on BMW's most popular crossover. It pairs a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo gas engine with an electric motor and eight-speed Steptronic transmission. Combined output comes to 252 horsepower, which can be temporarily upped to 293 hp with a press of the XtraBoost button.” reports Autoblog: “The lithium-ion battery under the rear seat maintains the luggage volume of the conventional X3. The 6.5-second dash to 62 miles and hour puts it about 0.4 seconds behind the regular, 248-hp four-pot X3.” Reports Autoblog: “Next come upgraded, second-gen versions of the electrified 2, 3, 5, X5, and 7 Series ranges. The 330e runs up to 37 miles on electric power, a 50 percent improvement over the first-gen — but BMW didn't clarify how the 3 Series gained the extra range. As with the X3 PHEV, the 330e harnesses a combined system output of 252 hp and a temporary 41-hp squirt using XtraBoost. The batteries in the 225xe Active Tourer and 530e sedan grow in capacity without growing in size. The 225xe cell is now 9.7 kWh instead of 7.7, extending all-electric range to 29 miles. The 530e battery is rated at 12 kWh, while only taking up the same space as the previous 9-kWh battery. That improves electric range to up to 35 miles. The 530e will also be available with xDrive later this year.   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/bmw-x3-xdrive30e-phev-geneva-vv833kz9/   MERCEDES EQV ELECTRIC VAN CONCEPT DEBUTS, WILL SPAWN PRODUCTION VERSION "Fully electric vans aren't all the rage yet, but Mercedes is trying to change that with its EQV Concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Mercedes promises this concept is going to spawn an extremely similar production vehicle. The specs on the concept are promising, too." Reports Autoblog: "The EQV Concept will travel 249 miles on a full charge from its 100 kWh battery pack. It's capable of charging up to 25 percent in just 15 minutes, providing 62 miles of driving. This van won't be a speed demon by any measure, as the single electric motor pushes a modest 201 horsepower to the front wheels. Top speed for the big van is 99 mph."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/05/mercedes-eqv-electric-van-concept-geneva-k43j5ss9/   HONDA TO FULLY ELECTRIFY Honda took to the stage at Geneva Motor Show to announce the further acceleration of its electrification ambitions. The company announced its intention to move 100 per cent of its European sales to electrified powertrains by 2025. This new ambition builds on the brand’s 2017 aim of two-thirds of its sales to be electrified by 2025, and places it firmly at the forefront of Honda’s global electrification shift announced as part of its 2030 vision.         COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Friday 20th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.     FIRST TEST DRIVES OF THE TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE According to Wall Street Journal, they got the first ever drive of Model 3 Performance According to Marques Brownlee. He got the first ever drive of Model 3 Performance Whilst Marques will put his on IGTV, let's stick to the other. "I have borrowed a new 2018 Tesla Model 3 Performance ($78,000, as tested) from the factory in Fremont, Calif., and I’m now quietly tearing the hide off this switchback road in the grass-gold hills near Silicon Valley for the world’s first test drive of the hot rod Tesla" whilst I wish that was me saying that, it's Dan Neil from WSJ.com: ""In the Performance version, two motors north and south equal 335 kW (450 hp) and digitally mastered all-wheel drive, with corner-exiting acceleration that will leave average BMW M4s with a soft auf Wiedersehen." "The Model 3 is more than futuristic. It’s optimistic. This is what ordinary cars should be, which is to say, better than they are." "But the car is a star. Doubters will have to bring it. Show me another car with an all-glass roof and five-star rollover crash rating. Point out another $80,000 sedan that out-clouds a Rolls-Royce, out-punches a Porsche Boxster and gets an electric equivalent of 116 mpg. You can’t, unless you’re building something in your garage we don’t know about." Meanwhile the carbon fibre spoiler on the Performance cars isn't fitted at the factory, but at service centres. And pics are now online of it. It's nice and clean, very simple, quite subtle. The badges aren't universally loved. If you have a Dual Motor your Model 3 now says Dual Motor, in words, on the back. It's much more of a signpost than something like "P100D" which doesn't mean anything to a laymen. But someone who's curious, who see's a new electric car and then reads the words Dual Motor, will at least know that it has two motors. Itself a fact many people might not have given any time to thinking about. Then again AWD would have been more specific, but again it's a bit car geeky. A reminder again on the current North America Tesla website timescales. Dual Motor Performance, or maybe we just call it Performance because dual motor is the only choice so it's kinda redundant saying Dual Motor Performance, ~1-3 Months. Dual Motor is ~2-4 months. Rear Wheel Drive ~1-3 months. And whilst you still can't select standard battery, it's 6-9 months. Of course there's no point changing the Tesla site to UK mode as the Design Studio doesn't work. But out of interest, whilst I'm there, there are 11 Used Tesla's on there, from £37,900 for a 2014 Model S up to £69,100 for a 2016 Model S 90D.   https://www.wsj.com/articles/first-ever-review-of-the-tesla-model-3-performance-a-thrilling-modern-marvel-1532022533   KIA LAUNCHES NIRO EV IN KOREA We've seen the Hyundai Kona launch in the home market of South Korea and yesterday, the Kia Niro EV launched. The Niro EV mated with a 64 kilowatt-hour battery can travel up to 385 kilometres -- more than the distance between Washington and New York -- on a single charge. The model with a 39.2 kWh battery has a range of 246 km, the company said in a statement. The model sells for the equivalent of US$42,000) and Kia plans to launch the Niro EV in Europe later this year. I’ve been checking out the Kia Korea website, and whilst I can’t read a single word, I can tell the Niro EV has taken pride of place on the homepage.   http://www.theinvestor.co.kr/view.php?ud=20180719000245   NISSAN LEAF NISMO GOES ON SALE IN JAPAN The Nissan LEAF NISMO will go on sale July 31 in Japan, featuring custom tuning computer for more responsive acceleration, custom tires and suspension for improved handling and ride comfort, and new exterior and interior design. The exterior also includes custom 18-inch aluminium wheels that minimize air resistance. At the moment, Nissan says there are no plans to offer the LEAF NISMO outside of Japan. Nissan aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles a year, including the new Nissan LEAF, globally by fiscal 2022.   THERE'S A WHOPPING 487 ELECTRIC VEHICLE MAKERS IN CHINA NOW China now has 487 electric vehicle makers based in the country. Jalopnik says: "Bankrolled by $15 billion in subsidies, with another $47 billion in the pipeline, a smattering of new manufacturers are angling for a piece of the action. Local governments across China are teaming up to give EV hopefuls millions of dollars to support their ambitions, and it’s happening all across the country. And WSJ: "Such partnerships are springing up all over China, spurred by Beijing’s call for the country to become a world power in electric-vehicle technology and by local governments eager to jump on the bandwagon. President Xi Jinping’s Made in China 2025 plan, launched three years ago to promote “domestic dominance and global competitiveness” in 10 sectors, includes electric vehicles." Back to Jalopnik: "There’s bright spots, to be sure. NIO, with its ES8 electric crossover, has raised $3.1 billion and already launched production. Byton wants to make an entry-level luxury SUV with a screen that covers the entire dash, and thinks it can start production in 2019. Even Faraday Future, virtually left for dead a year ago, could see itself making a production car or two by the end of the year (though it’s still running into similar issues of the past)."   https://jalopnik.com/theres-a-whopping-487-electric-vehicle-makers-in-china-1827718353   NEW EV LAW FOR UK Who fancies talking about some new laws here in the UK? "Electric car chargers are set to become a more common sight on UK highways and motorways in near future, after the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act became law earlier today" according to Business Green: "The Act gives government the power to force petrol stations and motorway services to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers to ensure charging availability keeps up with market demand. It will also require operators to ensure charge points are compatible with all EVs and standardise payment systems for charging. In addition, the Act updates insurance rules to ensure drivers are covered even when self-driving modes are activated."   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3036207/chargepoints-head-for-the-highway-as-automated-and-electric-vehicles-act-becomes-law   GATWICK LAUNCHES UK FIRST ELECTRIC CAR SHARING SERVICE In a UK airport first, passengers, staff and local residents can now reserve and pick up a 100% electric car at Gatwick – and return it to any of 300 compatible pick up/ drop off points across London or back at Gatwick - the airport announced today. The service - similar to schemes popular in other parts of the world - is being rolled out in partnership with Bluecity, the only company to operate a pan-London electric vehicle car sharing service with 100 cars currently available in total. Operating in a similar way to existing cycle schemes across the capital, ten cars and charging points are currently available on Gatwick’s South Terminal forecourt. This is Bluecity’s first airport hub and discussions are in progress to increase capacity.   ECOTAP AND ALLEGO TO DEPLOY 4,500 PUBLIC CHARGERS IN THE NETHERLANDS "The Dutch provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel have awarded charger manufacturer Ecotap and charging solution provider Allego a contract to install and operate 4,500 public charging points in 43 cities." reports Charles Morris at Charged EVs: "The new chargers will make the maximum possible use of sustainably generated energy from local energy coops, and will automatically reduce charging speeds during peak hours. EV drivers gain access to the chargers using Allego’s Dutch public charging platform. The company uses separate platforms for Belgium and Germany."   https://chargedevs.com/newswire/ecotap-and-allego-to-deploy-4500-public-chargers-in-the-netherlands/   OIL REFINERS EXPRESS WORRY OVER ELECTRIC CARS "A recent survey by the World Refining Association shows some oil industry executives are becoming concerned about how the proliferation of electric cars may affect their business. A core of respondents, however, seem unconvinced that electric cars are a threat." so says Green Car Reports: "In the survey published late last month, 61.1 percent of professionals in the oil industry said they were "somewhat worried," about electric cars' impact on their business."   FOR E-TRUCK REVENUES, LOOK TO BYD RATHER THAN TESLA Seeking Alpha have noticed that orders for BYD Electric Trucks keep on rolling in. "Unlike its competitors, it has a full range up and running. This is key. Much of the talk has been about the big Class 8 trucks. In fact, smaller trucks in huge demand from the growth of e-shopping and consequent urban deliveries are a more important business. Other specialist products have great potential too. In garbage trucks alone, BYD has a range of products for which orders are starting to build up. Recently, the company closed a contract for 500 garbage trucks in Shenzhen (a city to which they have already supplied over 16,000 e-buses). These have a range of 280 kms."   COMMUNITY YouTube comments   You can listen to all previous 185 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Monday 26th February 2018.   FORD FOCUS READY FOR NEW ELECTRIC MODEL   …but first, a name not mentioned too much around electric vehicles is Ford. We’ve heard a lot of positive news from Chairman Bill Ford, such as the Detroit Auto Show announcement of spending $11bn by 2022 with 40 electrified models. Of course Tesla exceeding the Ford market cap must have caused a few boardroom conversations.   Well now the next generation Ford Focus has been spotted on a commercial photo shoot. The current Focus Electric has to be customised from a car not designed to be an EV, it’s a 35KWh battery, and only sold in 10 states in the US. It has a 6.6kW on board charger and DC Fast Charge up to 50kW, so it’s not exactly cutting edge but it’s a solid compliance car.   However the next Focus has been built for multiple powertrains in mind, from petrol to Plug In to full electric. And as the covers are off for photo shoots, it means we’re close to hearing what could be a hidden gem for 2018.  The announcement won’t be at March’s Geneva Motor Show but shortly after, and sales could begin in the Summer.   The focus isn’t just a car that looks like a ‘normal’ car, much like the e-Golf it actually IS a car millions of people own, as EVs move from being something quirky and funky looking to being regular cars.   https://pushevs.com/2018/02/22/2019-ford-focus-spied-uncovered-portugal/   TESLA SEMI WILL “BEAT” ADVERTISED SPECS   Recent stories about the Tesla semi truck have been around the tire-smoking burnout we saw captured on YouTube, or Daimler saying the specs are physically impossible to achieve using current technology.   Now Elon Musk has…taken to Twitter. And not only does he address the price, saying they’lll hit $150k for the 300 mile version and $180k for the 500 miler,  but also the specs which the German makers say are a dream.    https://insideevs.com/musk-optimistic-tesla-can-overdeliver-semi-specs-announced-price/   SUPERCAR FROM CHINA   Another electric supercar looks like it’s coming from China. LCVHI is a Shanghai based company with a design studio in Italy, and for the past two years they’ve been working on their new car the Venere, to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.   They say it will be almost 1000bhp, have a 100kWh battery, twin motors and have two gears. At this stage that’s all they have – a press release and two photos of some headlights. We want everyone to succeed and good luck to them, but it’s a tough market to enter as a new Chinese company selling a supercar.   https://www.carwale.com/news/chinese-carmaker-lcvhi-to-showcase-992bhp-venere-ev-at-geneva/   MODEL 3 ON THE DYNO SHOWS OFF ALL THE TORQUES   As Tesla Model 3s get into the hands of more buyers, and non-Tesla employees who don’t have Non Disclosure Agreements, we’ve even someone hack one into factory mode to see the stats of the 74-76kWh battery.   However now, not one but two dyno videos have surfaced on YouTube. One of them being Drag Times who also showed it up against a P100D.  Next step – get one on a drag strip!   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-model-3-hits-the-dyno-has-all-the-torque-123826.html   CHEVROLET BOLT GETS CONSUMER REPORTS TOP 10 AWARD   Consumer Reports has placed the Chevrolet Bolt in their Top 10 new cars. They haven’t finished testing the Model 3 in case you were wondering, but they have done thousands of miles in the Bolt. They praise the mainstream price.   “The Bolt offers consumers further proof that mainstream electric cars can deliver strong driving performance. This pure electric is built around a 60-kWh battery pack that holds a generous charge, reducing any anxiety of running out of power and getting stranded. The driver sits high up in the Bolt, with a commanding view on par with a small SUV,”   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/tesla-model-3-hits-the-dyno-has-all-the-torque-123826.html     Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. We'd love to spread the word about electric cars so please do share this with at least one person who might be interested.   Just a reminder you can listen to all of our previous podcasts on iTunes, Google Play for your Android devices, and most recently now on Spotify’s Podcast section. Whilst you’re there why not Subscribe for free and then you get them automatically.   It would really mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on iTunes which will help us spread the word to a wider audience about electric cars.   If you have an Amazon Echo, why not be one of the first to download our brand new Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Twitter @EVNewsDaily, have a wonderful day, and I'll see you tomorrow.

Zwei ereignisreiche Wochen liegen hinter uns.
