Diesels lost more than half their share year-on-year, falling to just 2.3%, with petrol and plugless hybrids not faring much better. Overall auto market volume was 17992 units, slightly above seasonal norms. The Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3 took the top two spots." writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "September's combined plugin result of 91.5% consisted mainly of full battery electrics (BEVs) at a new record share of 77.5%, with plugin hybrids taking a modest 13.9%. The company launched its U.S. IPO last October in a high profile merger with blank-check company Diamond Peak Holdings. Lordstown's shares trade on the Nasdaq." reports Futurecar: "Lordstown Motors claimed that it had more than 100,000 preorders for the Endurance pickup worth a total of $1.4 billion, which wasn't true. With a falling stock price, the fallout led to the sudden resignation of Burns along with Chief Financial Officer Julio Rodriguez in June, leaving the company's future uncertain.  Lordstown is reportedly in talks to sell its Ohio EV factory that it acquired from General Motors to Taiwan contract manufacturer Foxconn. Foxconn's Chairman, Young Liu, confirmed to news outlet Nikkei Asia in August that the company plans to build an EV factory in the U.S. and another in Thailand." Lamborghini's first-ever dedicated EV will then arrive in the second half of the decade. Lamborghini has previewed its first EV in a shadowy teaser image on a slide showing its future product roadmap, but details are being kept under wraps." according to CarBuzz: "a new report by Automotive News suggests Lamborghini's first EV will take the form of an electric grand tourer with a practical 2+2 seating layout so the whole family can come along for the ride. Details are still scarce, but the electric grand tourer is reportedly being developed in collaboration with Audi and Porsche and be underpinned by Volkswagen Group's new Scalable Systems Platform entering production in 2024. According to the report, Lamborghini's first fully electric car will launch between 2025 and 2027. Jay Leno took one for a spin in the latest episode of Jay Leno's Garage, and to say he was impressed with the electric conversion is an understatement." say CarBuzz: "Fortunately, the electric motor and battery haven't ruined the original car's agile handling. Weighing just 2,505 pounds, the electric Porsche 912 is only 130 pounds heavier than the stock version. In fact, it's even more enjoyable to drive since it has better weight distribution and upgraded suspension. For the electric conversion, Zelectric has added a 32-kWh battery and an electric motor from a Tesla Model S rated at 536 hp. On a full charge, the Tesla-powered Porsche will last around 120-145 miles depending on how conservatively you drive." Most of the Model 3s and Ys in the Earth Rides fleet were purchased new. The first 26 electric buses should be delivered in 2022." says electrive: "In the announcement about the new electric bus purchase, it is said that Capital Metro aims to transition its entire fleet of more than 400 transit vehicles with zero-emission vehicles. According to its website, the Austin public transport provider currently has a fleet of 368 MetroBuses, which are presumably fossil-fuelled, since they list their 12 electric buses separately. We talked about the Nissan price reductions, but one listener asked how MUCH was the LEAF reduced by? "As usual, we have very thin up-to-date numbers from the SMMT on popular plugin models in the UK. Worth noting is that several of the top 10 best selling autos now have plugin variants (table below)." says Max Holland at CleanTechnica: "The Tesla Model 3, thanks to its usual end-of-quarter push, did get in to the top 10 overall autos in March, at #4 spot. Its total volume over the first quarter – of around 7,300 – should have put it at a respectable #11 spot on the overall best sellers list for the year so far, a good result." Remember the UK government removed the car grant on March 18th but Tesla responded by saying they would artificially rude their prices, ie keep them the same for the customer, IF you ordered by March 31st. So Tesla taking the hit might have persuaded people to bring forward purchases.   Tesla's German registrations in Q1 were up 83% year-over-year. Tesla registered 6,074 vehicles in Germany. In March alone it was 3,703. In Germany most EVs were sold by VW though, with over 10,000 in Feb of the ID.3, e-UP and PHEV Golf.   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/04/06/uk-hits-13-9-plugin-share-in-march-up-almost-2x-year-on-year   BMW GROUP SOLD OVER 70,000 PLUG-INS IN Q1 BMW Group sales of electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles totaled 70,207 in in the first quarter of the year, an increase of 129.8% percent over the 30,692 sold in the same period a year ago. With the BMW iX3, which was just released in Europe a few weeks ago, the BMW i3 and the MINI Cooper SE, the BMW Group already offers a strong range of fully-electric vehicles that will be joined over the course of the year by two key innovation flagships: the BMW iX and the BMW i4. The BMW Group expects fully-electric vehicles to account for at least 50% of its global sales in 2030. The MINI brand is likely to reach this milestone already in 2027.   MERCEDES SNAGS A EUROPEAN TRADEMARK FOR EQG "Last fall, Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius talked about the company's plans to electrify its popular G-Class SUV, and now, a European Union Intellectual Property Office filing found by members of the MBEQClub forum and reported on by The Drive Friday shows that Mercedes has trademarked the name "EQG." " says CNET: "This trademark filing very likely means that Mercedes is planning on offering a fully-battery-electric Geländewagen, rather than one that's merely been "electrified" with a hybrid system."   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/mercedes-snags-a-european-trademark-for-eqg/   TESLA ROLLS OUT PREFAB SUPERCHARGER "A recent Supercharger installation in Beaver, Utah, has caught the eye of the electric vehicle community. Based on an image shared of the Supercharger site, it appears that the charging stalls have been pre-installed on a large concrete slab. Speculations initially suggested that the setup was just an updated iteration of the Megapack-powered mobile Superchargers that Tesla deploys during peak seasons, but it soon became evident that the setup in the recently-shared images was quite different. " reports Teslarati: "By setting up the Superchargers and their electronics on large concrete slabs even before they are placed in their respective locations, Tesla would be able to complete Supercharger installations much faster. When Tesla unveiled the new refreshed Model S and Model X in January, CEO Elon Musk said that the first deliveries would happen within a few weeks." says electrek: " That was six weeks ago, and there has yet to be a single reported new Model S or Model X delivery. Tesla appears to have run into some issues in producing and/or getting the new Model S and Model X ready for deliveries. The investing firm recently surveyed institutional investors on the value of internal-combustion technology at GM and Ford. Seventeen percent said ICE technology had no value or negative value today. Sixty percent rated ICE technology as slightly positive. But essentially all of the growth in powertrain adoption in coming years will be electric, while ICE powertrains are certain to decline. With investors viewing internal-combustion powertrains as a dying technology, there’s likely to be little new investment, with research dollars flowing instead to the electrification efforts investors value. Tesla had previously objected to a push to issue a recall from regulators, as it claimed that the problem wasn't a safety issue." according to CNN: "The recall applies to some 2012 through 2018 Model S and 2016 through 2018 Model X vehicles. Under the recall, which will begin on March 30, Tesla must notify owners of cars with the failure-prone touchscreens and replace a computer chip that controls the screen. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) considers this a safety issue because without a functioning center screen, drivers lose the display for the car's backup camera and controls for the window defroster and defogger., Tesla said in its letter to NHTSA that it will make the recall repairs for free and will offer a discount on upgraded screen hardware."   From NHTSA: ""We note that your report states that Tesla believes that this matter does not have a safety risk," read the letter, signed by Alex Ansley, chief of NHTSA's Recall Management Division. It is only the fifth time the Detroit automaker has conducted a major redesign of its logo since being founded in 1908." reports NBC News: "The new logo features the automaker’s “gm” initials in lowercase letters with the “m” underlined as a nod to its Ultium battery cell platform that will underpin its new EVs, said Deborah Wahl, GM’s chief marketing officer. The bright blue letters are inside a rounded box of the same color. The new logo, which was designed in-house, accompanies a new “everyone in” tagline and advertising campaign focused on EVs. Shares of Geely Automobile shot up by a fifth in Hong Kong on Friday. Baidu joins a crowded field of more than 200 licensed electric car makers of all shapes and stripes, many of them backed by China’s major technology companies. The South Korean car company initially said it was in the "early stage" of talks with the iPhone maker about a possible electric car partnership. But hours later it backtracked and said it was talking with a number of potential partners without naming Apple." according to BBC News: "Hyundai's share price rose more than 20% when the tie-up was announced. "Apple and Hyundai are in discussions but they are at an early stage and nothing has been decided," it said in a statement which was later revised. Hyundai's value shot up $9bn (£6.5bn) after the Apple announcement. While an updated statement said it was talking to a number of companies about a possible electric car tie-up including Apple, a later version omitted the US tech firm"   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55583504   CADILLAC LYRIQ INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM WILL BE 33 INCHES " Cadillac just dropped more information on the massive infotainment screen going in its upcoming Lyriq EV, and the details are intriguing.  The 33-inch LED screen spanning the width of the dash gave them plenty of real estate to get creative. Customizability and flexibility are two elements Cadillac is highlighting. There will supposedly be display themes “to fit the driver’s mood and personality.” " says Autoblog; "One icon we’ll point out is the colorful Google Maps icon in the menu list. Will Cadillac actually use Google Maps as the navigation system from the factory in the Lyriq? Perhaps. It tends to be exponentially better than any manufacturer-designed navigation system. This is a stunning ascent from the 4.0% share seen in December 2019. The Volkswagen brand dominated Germany’s full battery electric sales in 2020, taking almost 24% of the market, with Renault runner-up at 16%." reports Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "December’s 26.6% combined plugin share was led by full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) at 14.0% of the market, with plugin hybrids (PHEVs) close behind at 12.6% share. We don’t yet have the full details of BEV model sales for December, but we do have some information on the top 5 best selling BEV brands for the year as a whole. Volkswagen (with the e-Golf, ID.3, e-Up!, and perhaps a few ID.4) strongly led Germany’s full year sales of BEVs, with almost 24% share of the market. However, the year’s single best selling BEV model (by far) was the Renault ZOE, with over 31,000 sales. It’ll be the first of the company’s EVs to reach US shores, though spy photos have shown the company is developing another, sportier version called the ID.4 GTX. It’s expected to receive a coupe-like silhouette and more power, as previous spy photos have shown. However, a new batch shows VW might be trying to keep its development under warps." according to Motor1: "That powertrain would include a dual-motor setup that’ll produce 302 horsepower (225 kilowatts) that’ll hit the ground through an all-wheel-drive system. The extra oomph will allow the variant to hit 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 6.2 seconds, which is far quicker than the 8.5 seconds needed for the single-motor model. However, the extra power will come at a cost. Until now, the Dutch operator has mainly relied on DC columns from the Portuguese manufacturer Efacec." says electrive: "The first fast chargers from Alpitronic and Tritium are to be installed at new Allego HPC sites during the first half of 2021. In the image Allego posted on related social media posts about the announcement, an Alpitronic Hypercharger in the 150-kW version and a 50-kW charger from Tritium can be seen in Allego’s white and green colors. After hitting this milestone, the electric vehicle maker qualified for entry into the index of the United State's 500 largest companies." reportd Yahoo! Finance: "After the S&P 500 added Etsy Inc. (NASDAQ: ETSY), Teradyne Inc (NASDAQ: TER) and Catalent (NYSE: CTLT) on Friday evening, the lack of a Tesla announcement sent shares sinking. Meeting qualifications does not automatically mean a company will be added to the index, as a committee makes the final decision on which stocks to add each month. Many assumed Tesla would be added to the S&P 500 index. The company is currently one of the top 10 largest in the U.S. based on market cap. While it won't affect day to day operations, it will hurt the share price."   CNBC points out: "Even if a company meets these criteria as well as the other stipulations, that does not guarantee inclusion in the index. Naturally, screens feature prominently, but the most notable characteristic may be the wholesale embrace of touch-sensitivity." according to Autoblog: "The images show a large freestanding center screen that is able to display multiple functions at once — in this case, navigation, audio, and phone, along with what may be an equalizer. Another image shows that the central display has three pages of menus. The center screen dwarfs the instrument cluster, which is another screen. Contained within the image of the instrument cluster, by the way, is a rendering of the ID.4 that gives us our best look yet at the exterior of the vehicle in its production form. The overall auto market was down 5.8% compared to a year ago, at just over 87,000 units." writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "The 9.75% August result was weighted strongly in favour of full battery electric vehicles (BEVs) over plug in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), with market shares of 6.4% and 3.3% respectively. This was quite a significant change in weighing from the cumulative year-to-date shares of 4.9% BEV versus 3.3% PHEV. We can see that the Tesla Model 3, Nissan LEAF, MG ZS EV, Jaguar I-Pace and Renault Zoe were the most popular BEVs, all selling over 2000 units in the first half of the year. The BMW 330e and the Mitsubishi Outlander were highest selling PHEVs. The MG ZS EV deserves a shout out for grabbing the 3rd place spot for BEVs in its first full year of availability – a great achievement. This work included structural changes to the building as well as modifications to the conveyor technology and final assembly line. Investments made amount to 32 million euros. It is now the only line in the entire Volkswagen Group on which vehicles based on the MEB modular electric car platform and the MQB modular transverse matrix can be built alongside one another. The extension is being granted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The so-called "quiet car" rule requires electrified vehicles to emit noises at speeds up to 18.6 mph as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists. The charging points are to go online in late summer – just in time for the start of the next Bundesliga season, from which point the professional soccer players of FC Bayern will be driving the Audi e-tron, the brand’s first fully electric SUV. It will ride on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform and take the shape as Skoda’s variant of the VW ID.4. The Czech automaker is now kicking off the teaser campaign by sharing images of camouflaged prototypes depicting the zero-emissions SUV.” Reports Motor1: “The Enyaq will be available with a choice between three battery sizes, kicking off with the 55-kWh pack offering 340 kilometers (211 miles) of range per the WLTP cycle. This base version is rear-wheel drive and comes with a rear-mounted electric motor developing 146 horsepower (109 kW). Step up to the midrange model and you’ll get a larger 62-kWh battery with enough juice for 390 kilometers (242 miles), feeding a rear electric motor producing 177 hp (132 kW). If you want the longest range possible, the rear-wheel-drive variant with the 82-kWh battery is the one to get as it offers 311 miles (500 kilometers) between charges while producing 201 hp (150 kW) from its rear-mounted electric motor. Skoda has also engineered the Enyaq to accommodate an all-wheel-drive layout with dual electric motors, one in the front and one at the back, with either 261 hp (195 kW) or a punchy 302 hp (225 kW). The latter is effectively the company’s most powerful production car ever and is suitably going to be badged as an “RS” model. Sibling firms Audi, Seat and Skoda will also offer dedicated EVs built on the MEB platform.”   Klaus Bischoff : “The new architecture that electric vehicles offer gives designers the chance to come up with an entirely new design approach. We’re aiming for develop something that gives customers big advantages: a small footprint, big interior and fully digital architecture. To keep [an electric car] in the traditional space would have been the wrong decision. There is more freedom [with a bespoke EV] because the car’s architecture volume and proportions are different. Early on, Fiat realised that just adapting an existing car to be pure-electric wouldn’t work; the 500’s trademark focus on style and usability can accommodate electrification, as in the recently launched Hybrid edition, but not the extra battery capacity needed for an EV. It is not a current platform that we’ve tweaked to accommodate some batteries. It’s all-new. And this little car, once again, is totally relevant. This is our urban Tesla. The specialists from Slovakia have converted an e-NV200 into a high roof transporter for this purpose. The body and loading area have been lengthened slightly towards the rear, while the roof behind the driver’s cab has been made considerably higher. This means that the XL version of the e-NV200 with eight cubic metres has a loading space twice as large as the basic model." reports electrive: "Voltia had already launched the conversion with the original 24 kWh version of the e-NV200, but the current models have the newer 40 kWh battery. According to Voltia, the vehicle has been optimised primarily for delivery on the last mile. "Roadster is kind of like dessert," Musk said. "We gotta get the meat and potatoes and greens and stuff." Musk also said Tesla should produce the Cybertruck, a futuristic-looking light commercial vehicle, before working on the Roadster. Tesla announced the Roadster, a battery-powered four-seater, at the end of 2017 and at the time said the car would be faster than any street-legal production car. This is our best ever first quarter performance. Model Y production started in January and deliveries began in March, significantly ahead of schedule. Additionally, our Shanghai factory continued to achieve record levels of production, despite significant setbacks."   "Tesla reported on Thursday that it delivered approximately 88,400 vehicles in the first quarter of 2020, beating expectations. Analysts had expected about 79,900 as of Wednesday, according to a survey by FactSet. Tesla stock rose more than 17% after hours on the news." reports CNBC: "Tesla reported combined deliveries of 76,200 Model 3 sedans and Model Y cross-over SUVs, and combined deliveries of 12,200 of the older and more expensive Model S and X vehicles. This quarter marked Tesla’s first producing and delivering the Model Y, the company’s newest vehicle. However, the company did not break out numbers for sales or production of the cross-over SUV."   "While it's notable that Tesla exceeded its guidance for the quarter, the company has its work cut out for it when it comes to hitting its full-year target for over 500,000 deliveries, up from about 368,000 in 2019. To achieve this guidance, it will need to average 137,200 deliveries in each of the next three quarters." says Motley Fool: "Tesla highlighted progress at its Shanghai factory in its first-quarter deliveries update, noting that it "continued to achieve record levels of production, despite significant setbacks." Honda plans to begin selling the vehicles in the United States and Canada in 2024. The relationship between GM and its smaller Japanese rival reflects industry pressures to share technology and development costs to meet demands for cleaner vehicles."   Joel at Autoblog said: "The two cars will use the new global EV platform from General Motors and the company's new Ultium batteries. The platform will be used in a wide array of GM vehicles from Chevy to Cadillac. The Ultium batteries are unique pouch-style batteries that allow for lots of packaging flexibility, rapid charging, and will be offered in packs from 50 to 200 kWh. All of this technology will underpin the new Hondas. The companies pointed out that while GM is providing the mechanical bits, Honda will be in control of everything else. So the exterior, interior and final tuning of the driving characteristics will be done by the Japanese company. Porsche reports that the first-quarter deliveries of the Taycan model in the U.S. amounted 221. That includes two top of the line versions - Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, as the entry-level 4S is coming in Q2.   NORWAY: 75% OF VEHICLES SOLD HAVE PLUGS "Norway’s electric vehicle revolution broke new ground in March 2020, with plug-in vehicles now representing over 75% of vehicle sales in the country. Of the remaining quarter share, plug-less hybrids took 7.1%, diesel 10%, and petrol 7.7%." writes Dr Max Holland for Clean Technica: "As usual in Norway, pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were favoured over plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), by a ratio of approximately 3:1. BEVs alone represented 55.9% of the total auto market. Favourite full-electric models in March 2020 included the Audi e-tron (in both its new “50” and original “55” variants), the Tesla Model 3, the venerable VW e-Golf, the Nissan LEAF, and the Hyundai Kona EV"   BMW BRILLIANCE LAUNCHES NEW FACTORY CONSTRUCTION "BMW Brilliance has begun construction of a new production facility on the existing Chinese plant site in Tiexi, a district of Shenyang in Liaoning Province. With the new plant, BMW Brilliance (BBA) intends to double production capacity at the site." says electrive.com: "The expansion project will be realised on an area of 3.2 square kilometres and will be equipped with flexible production lines, in line with BMW’s strategy of producing models with different drive technologies on a single line proportionately to sales demand. As a result, the new plant will produce purely electric cars as well as plug-in hybrids and cars running entirely on fossil-fuelled engines. From this year on, the fully-electric BMW iX3 will also roll off the production line at the Dadong plant. The vehicle will be manufactured exclusively in China and exported from there to the world. A major work of documentary history–the brilliantly edited and annotated transcripts, most of them never before published, of the presidential conversations of Lyndon B. Johnson regarding the Kennedy assassination and its aftermath.The transition from John F. Kennedy to Johnson was arguably the most wrenching and, ultimately, one of the most bitter in the nation’s history. As Johnson himself said later, “I took the oath, I became president. But for millions of Americans I was still illegitimate, a naked man with no presidential covering, a pretender to the throne….The whole thing was almost unbearable.”In this book, Max Holland, a leading authority on the assassination and longtime Washington journalist, presents the momentous telephone calls President Johnson made and received as he sought to stabilize the country and keep the government functioning in the wake of November 22, 1963. The transcripts begin on the day of the assassination, and reveal the often chaotic activity behind the scenes as a nation in shock struggled to come to terms with the momentous events. The transcripts illuminate Johnson’s relationship with Robert F. Kennedy, which flared instantly into animosity; the genuine warmth of his dealings with Jacqueline Kennedy; his contact with the FBI and CIA directors; and the advice he sought from friends and mentors as he wrestled with the painful transition. We eavesdrop on all the conversations–including those with leading journalists–that persuaded Johnson to abandon his initial plan to let Texas authorities investigate the assassination. Instead, we observe how he abruptly established a federal commission headed by a very reluctant chief justice of the Supreme Court, Earl Warren. We also learn how Johnson cajoled and drafted other prominent men–among them Senator Richard Russell (who detested Warren), Allen Dulles, John McCloy, and Gerald Ford–into serving. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESTING SUGGESTS NEW 62 KWH NISSAN LEAF SUFFERS FROM #RAPIDGATE "A recent road test by German EV rental specialist Nextmove has found that the new 62 kWh Nissan LEAF still suffers from similar DC fast charging throttling (#Rapidgate) issues at elevated temperature as the 40 kWh LEAF." according to Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "the Tekna trim price being £35,895 in the UK (higher prices than its battery electric competition, the Hyundai Kona EV or Kia Niro EV) and €47,000 in Germany (more than the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus).  whether or not this best-seen-charge-speed of 44 kW was temperature-limited or charger-power-limited, the drastically lower power (28 kW and 24 kW) delivered at subsequent DC charge sessions, corresponding to higher battery pack temperatures (47°C  and 49°C, respectively) can only be explained by thermal throttling. The 24 kW (corresponding to 49°C) was seen on the 2nd DC charge session on the first day of the test. On the 40kWh car, to its credit, in some regions, Nissan has recognised the issue and offered a software update to make the charge power restrictions a little less stringent. This effectively changes the battery management firmware to allow the battery to reach somewhat higher temperatures before restricting the DC charging power."   Nissan give this guidance "“The Nissan LEAF is designed to support the majority of journeys in daily life and is equipped with charging safeguards to protect the battery during repeated rapid charging sessions in a short period of time. The newly installed power will be made up of 4,000 MW of power from large-scale plants, and 400 MW from personal consumers. The spokeswoman added that the repeal of the controversial ‘sun tax’ in April this year has opened the floodgates for new renewable energy. The stultifying tax was introduced in 2015 by Mariano Rajoy’s PP government and penalised houses with solar panels if they wished to remain connected to the national grid. Maxwell’s battery dry electrode manufacturing process has already been piloted by Tesla, and will allow significant battery cost reductions and energy density improvements." writes Dr Max Holland for Cleantechnica: "Tesla’s current cell costs of around $100/kWh amount to approximately $3.5 billion in battery production costs per year (around 70 kWh per vehicle and 500,000 vehicles). The unveiling of the new Lilium Jet came as the all-electric aircraft completed its maiden flight in the skies over Germany earlier this month. The full-scale, full-weight prototype is powered by 36 all-electric jet engines that allow it to take-off and land vertically, while achieving remarkably efficient horizontal, or cruise, flight. The simplicity of the aircraft design, with no tail, no rudder, no propellers, no gearbox and only one moving part in the engine not only contributes to the safety and affordability of the aircraft, but it has also allowed the design team to focus their efforts on creating a magical customer experience in the cabin, from panoramic windows to gull-wing doors. With a top speed of 300 km/h and a range of 300km, the Lilium Jet is capable of completing much longer journeys than the majority of its competitors. This is, in part, thanks to the fixed wing design of the aircraft. While drone-based aircraft consume much of their energy keep- ing an aircraft in the air, the Lilium Jet can rely on the lift generated by the fixed wing to do this, meaning it will require less than ten percent of its maximum 2000 horsepower during cruise flight. This efficiency, which is comparable to the energy usage of an electric car over the same distance, means the aircraft would not just be capable of connecting suburbs to city centers and airports to main train stations, but would also deliver affordable high-speed connections across entire regions.   VOLKSWAGEN SAYS EV BATTERIES TO LAST "THE LIFE OF THE CAR" "In an announcement last month, Volkswagen joined Nissan and Tesla as the only automakers to explicitly warranty not just the batteries in its cars but specifically how much life it expects them to retain. Frank Blome, the head of VW's Center of Excellence in Battery Cells, said in an outward facing internal marketing interview that the company expects the battery packs in its upcoming line of ID cars to last "the life of the cars," he said." for GreenCarReports: "Batteries for the Audi E-tron quattro, the first all-electric car from the Volkswagen Group's luxury division come from Korean supplier LG Chem. LG's South Korean rival, SK Innovation, which was just sued by LG Chem at the International Trade Commission, will supply batteries for VW's new products in Europe as well as the U.S. SKI is building new battery factories in Hungary and the U.S. state of Georgia to supply the batteries. The Solar Roof ramp-up didn't reach volume scale and reportedly needs further development/tests, while low sales of standard solar panels forced Panasonic to sell "the great majority" of the solar cells to foreign buyers. Tesla is required to increase the number of employee to 1,460 by the end of April 2020 and it seems that the production of non-solar products is the only safe way to meet the requirements. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   AUDI E-TRON GETS CLOSER We're now just over a month away from the official launch of the Audi e-tron Crossover, the first fully electric Audi and the first of the e-tron range. Reuters report "The e-tron crossover will be revealed Aug. 30 in Brussels and will have a range of about 240 miles. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler quoted the price in Germany as 80,000 euros (about $95,000) — that's compared to 77,850 euros for the entry-model Jaguar I-Pace S AWD and 92,230 euros for the entry-level Tesla Model X 75D." Sometimes on here I get bit of kickback for being positive of ALL electric car makers, and especially when those large legacy auto makers are being forced into it by Tesla, because we know they can operate at scale when they want. And Audi in Hungary is one example, where 6,000 employees produce about 9,000 engines each day for 32 production plants of the Volkswagen Group, that's almost 2million combustion engines in 2017. If they turn their focus to EVs it would be huge news.   And from the VW Press Office: "On Tuesday, series production of electric motors officially started in Győr. The company has invested a double digit million amount to set up the motor production facility. Approximately 100 people are employed in this new area at present. For the production of electric motors, Audi Hungaria installed the innovative production equipment and islands within just one year. The departments for the development of electric motors and for production planning cooperated closely with the prototype manufacturing/ production technology centre in Győr to develop the required expertise. The current production capacity is for approximately 400 electric axle motors each day and can be gradually increased. At present, about 100 people are employed in this new area, to be increased to more than 130 by the end of the year. Production is with one‑shift operation, but will soon change to three shifts." "The electric motor from Győr offers numerous new features. With the stator – one of the core components of the motor – the aim is to insert as much of the thin enamelled copper wire as possible into the casing: the tighter the winding, the more efficient the power delivery. A new winding and inserting centre at Audi Hungaria makes it possible to wind the optimal amount of enamelled copper wire particularly compactly and then insert it into the casing. The electric axle consists of other large components such as the power electronics, which are located in their own housing, the gearing and two flange shafts that transmit the power to the wheels. MotorTrend: "Even with four aboard, the Model 3 DMP surged ahead so startlingly that it stopped conversation. Except maybe for an uttered "Oh my god." I braked pretty hard and arched up the on-ramp toward the freeway. It was a flourish more akin to swiping a navigation route on your phone than driving a car on the actual road. In maybe 120 wheel revolutions, a high-performance hierarchy has been rattled. The European marques perennially atop the sport sedan podium are about to have trapdoors release beneath them. Although nothing has fundamentally changed with the car's steering or suspension (besides an imperceptible but CG-lowering 5-10mm drop in ride height), the dual motor and all-wheel drive give the compact Tesla a tensed, hair-trigger potency for leaping ahead or around whatever's in the way. It's pure jungle cat." Mark Vaughn, West Coast Editor for Autoweek: "Controlling all that power on its way to the wheels is a new vehicle dynamic control (VDC) system. Tesla no longer uses Bosch VDC but has instead made its own. Tesla says this allows engineers to more precisely tune the distribution of torque front and rear as well as side-to-side. Acceleration is strong; thrilling, even. If you want one, get your order in ASAP!" writes Max Holland for CleanTechnica: "Hyundai is only planning for 30,000 units per year in the near term. Most of the exports are currently going to Europe, and won’t be arriving in the US till later in 2018. Pricing for the long-range, 64 kWh version varies by market, but starts from around €34,000/US$40,000 equivalent in Norway (NKR 326,000), €39,000 in Germany, £36,000 in the UK, or €42,000 in France. US pricing will emerge towards the end of 2018. Incentives in some markets will effectively reduce these prices further. In Norway, at this price, the 64 kWh Kona is a similar cost to the Bolt/Ampera-e." Clean Technica say the charge speed is 80kW, and I thought it was 100kW. Bankrolled by Sitech, itself an electric car brand under pioneering Chinese car manufacturer FAW, Gyon will launch during the summer. "   KIA KX3 EV: CRETA-BASED ELECTRIC CAR SPOTTED "Images of the Kia KX3 EV have surfaced online. The Creta-based electric vehicle (EV) is rumoured to go on sale by the end of 2018 in China." according to Team BHP.com: "The KX3 in the all-electric guise is expected to be powered by an 109 BHP electric motor with a claimed top speed of 150 km/h. The plot area shows more than 100 popular new car models in the U.S. Move over each data point to get more information (on a touch device, tap). The x axis shows the lifetime cost of each vehicle per mile driven. The y axis shows the greenhouse gas emissions of each vehicle per mile driven. We include emissions from producing the different fuels and vehicles. Our results show that you don't have to pay more for a low-carbon-emitting vehicle. While the average greenhouse gas emissions of all cars are more than 50% higher than the 2030 target, most hybrid and electric vehicles meet that target today, with today's electricity mix. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity production in California are half the U.S. average, and it shows. Emissions from electric vehicles drop below the 2040 climate target. Using a combination of low electricity emissions, high fuel prices, and a high share of city driving, we can construct a best case scenario for electric vehicles (EVs), where EVs are cheaper than comparable combustion engine vehicles. We can also do the opposite, choosing conditions that favour combustion engine cars. Even so, electric vehicles emit less than comparable combustion engine vehicles.
