featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2807: Ferrari FF Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 10 January 2025 is Ferrari FF.The Ferrari FF is a grand touring car that was produced by the Italian carmaker Ferrari from 2011 to 2016. The successor to the 612 Scaglietti, the FF—whose name is an acronym for "Ferrari Four"—is a three-door shooting brake. Development of the FF began in 2007, and it debuted at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2011; production started in the same month in Maranello, Italy. Designed under the direction of Lowie Vermeersch and Flavio Manzoni, the FF shares parts, mainly the engine, with the F12berlinetta—a coupé that was introduced one year after the FF.Upon its release, the FF became the world's fastest four-seater car and Ferrari's second-fastest grand tourer after the 599 GTO. The FF features a 6.3 L V12 engine that produces a power output of 485 kW (660 PS; 651 hp) and a torque output of 683 N⋅m (504 lb⋅ft), sufficient to give the car a maximum speed of 335 km/h (208 mph) and a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration of 3.7 seconds. Its transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch. The FF has received positive reviews from critics, who appreciate its design but criticise its steep price. The recipient of numerous awards, including Top Gear's Estate Car of the Year in 2011, the FF was succeeded by the GTC4Lusso in 2016.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:59 UTC on Friday, 10 January 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Ferrari FF on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Salli.

The Geneva Motor Show was held outside of Switzerland for the first time in its history. Qatar hosted the event which brings together the biggest car brands in the world. It's the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS)—but with a Middle Eastern twist. The prestigious auto event was held in Doha, Qatar's capital, this year. It's the first time it's been hosted outside of Switzerland since the show was established in 1905. “Going forward, GIMS Qatar will be hosted every two years in Doha, providing an unrivaled opportunity for brands to present their latest technologies, most innovative ideas and concepts, as well as inspire the next generation of automotive talent,” says Akbar Al Baker, Chairman of Qatar Tourism. More than 30 of the world's biggest car brands showcased their latest models. “We want to be a bridge between the West and the East. It's true that we know that there is a shift in the automotive industry with a lot of Chinese brands that are coming into different markets. Here, I think it's not so predominant, but we see already some new Chinese brands that are coming and willing to enter the Middle East market,” says Sandro Mesquita, CEO of the Geneva International Motor Show. The main show was at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center, but there were also events at the National Museum of Qatar. The motor show also took full advantage of its desert setting with off-road drives through the dunes, test drives and other activities. It comes at an appropriate time on the Gulf nation's motoring calendar with the Qatar Grand Prix scheduled on October 8. Qatar's tourism body views the motor show as part of its plans to turn the country into the fastest-growing destination in the Middle East by 2030. Around 200,000 people were expected to visit. Next year, the event will return to Geneva. GIMS Qatar ran from October 7-13. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

The Summer Games in Tokyo, the Geneva International Motor Show — and yes, even the Oktoberfest in Munich: The coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to stage major events, at least for the time being. However, what is to be done when the law requires that certain events be held during this year — for example the annual shareholders’ meetings of stock corporations? Well, in such a situation, extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures, such as the organization and staging of Daimler’s first-ever completely virtual Annual Shareholders’ Meeting on Wednesday. The bus company has made an investment of £350,000, including an investment of £80,000 to install the charging equipment for the double decker sightseeing buses, including a battery storage system to harness the energy produced by their solar panels."   https://www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/18292517.oxford-city-sightseeing-buses-going-electric/   EQC BY HOFELE IS BASED ON THE MERCEDES EQC Hofele are launching a new version of the Mercedes Benz EQC, the EQC by HOFELE and the car will come with a number of upgrades, the car was originally going to be unveiled at the cancelled Geneva Motor Show" reports Geeky GAdgets.com: "The EQC by HOFELE gets a range of styling upgrades over the standard car and it also gets some high end ‘Turbine’ wheels and more. The exterior of this EQC has unique HOFELE styling enhancements, subtle in design and detail, but they elevate the standard EQC to the premium luxury class of EV’s. Finished in the very exclusive Mercedes-Benz “Alubeam” paint, often described as “Liquid Metal”, this very expensive paint finish immediately lets us know that this EV is something very special."   https://www.geeky-gadgets.com/eqc-by-hofele-is-based-on-the-mercedes-eqc-09-03-2020/   GOODYEAR RECHARGE REGENERATING-TIRE CONCEPT AIMS TO CUT WASTE "Goodyear has developed a "self-generating" design to extend the life of tires, as well as make them more adaptable to different conditions." writes Green Car Reports: "The Goodyear ReCharge tire concept features a tread that can be replenished using fluid-filled capsules. So instead of replacing the whole tire, only the tread is replaced. In a new as-you-drive approach to the idea of the retread tire, the tread compound is made from "biological material" reinforced with fibers based on spider silk, Goodyear said. The compound is completely biodegradable, according to the company.  Because the tire is airless, drivers won't have to worry about maintaining pressures or fixing punctures, Goodyear noted."   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127362_goodyear-recharge-regenerating-tire-concept-aims-to-cut-waste   THE APEX AP-0 WILL BE A SURPRISINGLY LIGHTWEIGHT EV SPORTS CAR "While most electric supercars have giant batteries, big power and heavy weight figures, the Apex AP-0 will top the scales at just 1200kg. It'll be revealed this Friday" says Car Throttle: " It’s quite the achievement to build an electric car that weighs so little, as even the dinky Skoda Citigo e iV weighs a little bit more than that. You can put that skinny figure down to extensive use of carbon fibre in the chassis. There’s not much in the way of power or performance details yet, but it should be able to get close to the Apex AP-1 model revealed last year. That car used a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost engine out of the Focus ST and Mustang, and pushed out almost 400bhp for a 0-62mph time of just 2.5 seconds. With all the electric motor’s torque available instantly, we’d think that the electric AP-0 could match this figure. Show #713   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 1st March 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MODEL Y BEING  STOCKPILED AT FREMONT "Tesla has begun preparations for the first set of Model Y deliveries that are scheduled to take place as early as March 15. Car carriers loaded with Tesla’s all-electric crossover were spotted over the weekend alongside a stockpile of Model Y at the company’s factory lot in Fremont, California." reports Gene at Teslarati: "Tesla enthusiast Wilson Lam shared photos of a fleet of Model Y being loaded onto car carriers over the weekend, a signal that the electric carmaker is in the final stages of delivery preparation. While it’s unclear it the Model Y vehicles spotted in car haulers are display vehicles for showrooms or customer cars, the fleet of Tesla crossovers in Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White Multi-Coat, and Red Multi-Coat joins dozens of other Model Y sightings taking place in California."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-fremont-lot-car-carrier-hauler/   FIRST IMAGES OF THE TESLA MODEL Y INTERIOR IN THE WILD mrleetesla on Twitter -two USB-C in the rear on the rear vent cover.. 12v outlet in the trunk.   TESLA CHINA STARTS SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY 3 PHASE 2 TO BUILD MODEL Y "Tesla China has started construction on Phase 2 of Gigafactory 3 Shanghai. This will likely support Tesla Model Y production. This work started immediately after Phase 1.5 which was for the Battery and Powertrain workshop. In a video, Jason Yang calls it Phase 3." according to NextBigFuture.com.   https://www.nextbigfuture.com/2020/03/tesla-china-starts-shanghai-gigafactory-3-phase-2-to-build-model-y.html   BYD TO DELIVER 134 ELECTRIC BUSES TO LOS ANGELES LA Mayor Eric Garcetti announced this week that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) placed the largest order for electric buses in U.S. history  — 134 of them will come from BYD. The record-breaking order helps advance the core goals of Mayor Garcetti’s recently signed Executive Directive — “L.A.’s Green New Deal: Leading By Example” — which includes measures to make LADOT’s bus fleet entirely emissions-free in time for the opening ceremonies of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   STREETSCOOTER: DEUTSCHE POST TO CEASE ELECTRIC VAN PRODUCTION "Deutsche Post/DHL announces they will cease the manufacturing of their StreetScooter electric vans before the end of this year. The Group’s CEO Frank Appel has given up on finding a buyer for its subsidiary, even though it looked as if a deal with China’s Chery was as good as made." writes electrive: "StreetScooter wants to concentrate on the operation of the current fleet alone, which comprises 11,000 electric vans and is to be expanded to 15,000. Less than six months ago, StreetScooter and Chinese EV manufacturer Chery signed a letter of intent for a joint venture during German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s trip to China. Back then, in September, Chery and StreetScooter announced that they wanted to set up a joint venture in China.   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/29/deutsche-post-to-cease-streetscooter-production/   IS THIS THE MERCEDES EQE? "This could be our first look at the E-Class' electric brother. Mercedes-Benz’s electrification push will continue with three new hybrids planned for a release later this year together with the fully-electric EQA crossover. A product presentation from December 2019 hinted we could also see the EV flagship of the brand - the EQS sedan, before the year’s end but nothing has been confirmed yet. It turns out there might be yet another electric sedan in the works and this video could be our first look at it." says Yahoo! today: "The clip shows two Mercedes prototypes and one of them is obviously the EQS. The other one, however, features a modified and shortened body, which hints we could be looking at the upcoming EQE EV. Think of it as the electric version of today’s E-Class, similar to what the EQS will be for the S-Class."   https://sports.yahoo.com/mercedes-eqe-082012634.html   CHARGEPOINT CEO EXPLAINS WHY HE ORDERED A TESLA MODEL Y "When it came time for Pasquale Romano, the CEO of the electric-vehicle charging company ChargePoint, to choose his next EV, it was a close call between Tesla's Model Y SUV and the Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV." writes Business Insider: "Ultimately, the Model Y won out due to its release date and Romano's experience with Tesla's Model S sedan, Romano told Business Insider. On paper, the Model Y and Mustang Mach-E are similar in many areas, though the Model Y has an edge in range, starting price, seating capacity, and cargo space. It remains to be seen which of the two electric-vehicles shoppers will prefer, though there have been signs from Tesla and Ford suggesting each could ending up ranking among the best-selling EVs. "   https://www.businessinsider.com/chargepoint-ceo-chose-tesla-model-y-ford-mustang-mach-e-2020-2?r=US&IR=T   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   MARTIN YOUNG My next door neighbor is a Porsche Certified Instructor who teaches new owners how to handle their cars at Porsche Track Experiences here in the Southeast.  After some minor cajoling, he finally agreed to take my Chevy Volt out for a spin. We had only been in the car for about 3 minutes when he began to smile and shake his head at how good the performance was.  As we drove up a steep and curvy mountain road, he was having so much fun he actually laughed out loud!  When we were climbing up a particularly steep section, he exclaimed, "It's actually accelerating going up this!"  As we came back down, he marveled at the regenerative braking.  Later, after we pulled back into my driveway, he put it in park and turned to me...he smiled and stuck out his hand.  As I shook it, he said, "Thank you.  I had no idea." So to my fellow EV owners, I say this:  You do not have to convince your friends and family that EVs are great.  All that you have to do is convince them to drive your car.  Once they are behind the wheel, the car will show them how great EVs really are!   LEANNE ROBERTS I think the only way to convince them is to get them in one, first as a passenger and then get them to drive one. The way we got into EVs was through driving my brothers Nissan Leaf. There are other options out there such as the EV Experience Days through Octopus which I think is a great idea to test drive one and get rid of any FUD. I do think that drivers days and dealership deals for weekend test drives would only help increase the uptake.   Robert Pryor  • 3 days ago I'm about ready to tell people not to buy an EV, if the reverse psychology doesn't work, at least I won't have to hear lame reasons why it's not for them.   Stephen Troyer  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV.   Step one, buy one for yourself. Step two, offer to give rides or let people test drive. (Just don't badger people about it.) Step three, live with the EV and answer any questions about what it's like, how it's holding up, what maintenance and charging is like I remember a news item from this show saying that the #1 influence on people buying EVs is their friends buying EVs.   D R-K  • 5 days ago If you can bear to let someone else get behind the wheel... let them borrow your car for four days, say Thursday to Sunday... make sure you have a tracker because getting it back will not be easy. Living with an EV, not just a quick test drive will do all the work .   Peter Zerfass  • 5 days ago How to persuade someone to buy an EV? Give them the key(card). Let them drive 30 seconds. Done.       GENEVA CAR SHOW CANCELED "Two of Switzerland’s largest trade fairs fell victim to the coronavirus epidemic, with organizers of the Geneva International Motor Show and the Baselworld watch fair pulling the plug on this year’s salons as the outbreak spreads in Europe." writes Bloomberg: "The car show, which was due to start Monday, was canceled as a force majeure after the Swiss government barred large gatherings, the organizers said in a statement Friday. German manufacturers Daimler AG and Audi AG said they supported the decision to cancel the show."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-02-28/geneva-car-show-canceled-in-swiss-bid-to-contain-virus-outbreak?sref=W369vOBR   EUROPE’S CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD GOES LIVE ONLINE Despite the cancellation of the Geneva International Motor Show, the organizers have decided to broadcast the Car of the Year award ceremony via live streaming on Monday, March 2, at 3 p.m. Seven candidates are part of the list of nominees for the Car of the Year 2020 including Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model 3.  Jury members will have to award 25 points, spread over at least five of the seven models. This will take place on Monday, 2 March 2020 at Palexpo. It will be broadcasted live on the Geneva International Motor Show website and on the #GimsSwiss Facebook page. This will enable you to discover the winner in real time.   For the US audience, 3pm in Geneva is 9am in New York   VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CAR'S SOFTWARE BUGS THREATEN SUMMER LAUNCH "Volkswagen is still struggling with "massive" software problems with its ID3 compact electric car, according to a German business magazine. The software glitches may force to abandon the EV's planned sales launch in summer, Manager Magazin reported." reports Automotive News Europe: "The problems stem from the basic architecture of the ID3's software, which was developed "too hastily," the magazine said, citing VW's own experts. Many of the system's elements do not understand each other, leading to dropouts and other difficulties, the report said. Hundreds of test drivers of the car are reporting up to 300 errors a day, the magazine said. More than 10,000 technicians are trying to solve the problems, which could delay the ID3's launch by up to a year, the report said. A VW spokesman told Automotive News Europe that the timeline for the ID3 has not changed and the car will be launched this summer."   https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/vw-id3-software-problems-threaten-summer-launch-report-says   CHINA'S CATL AIMS TO RAISE $2.85 BILLION FOR EV BATTERY PROJECTS "CATL, China's top electric vehicle battery maker, said it aims to raise up to 20 billion yuan ($2.85 billion) in a private placement of shares to fund its battery projects and boost working capital." writes Autoblog: "The fundraising will help CATL to expand its battery-making capacity in Fujian, Jiangsu and Sichuan, as well as an energy storage research project, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange late Wednesday. The company has partnerships with Tesla, Volkswagen and BMW. In a separate filing on Wednesday, the battery maker said it plans to invest 10 billion yuan in a battery manufacturing base in Ningde, where it is headquartered."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/28/catl-electric-car-battery-maker-funding/   GILLETTE STADIUM SCORES A TOUCHDOWN WITH 50 NEW ENEL X EV CHARGERS "Gillette Stadium is diving into the wonderful world of EV charging with the installation of 50 new JuiceBox Pro 32 amp units mounted on 25 JuicePedestals." says Kyle Field at CleanTechnica: "The new stations will provide EV charging services to patrons of the stadium as they arrive to watch the New England Patriots or the New England Revolution."   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/02/28/gillette-stadium-scores-a-touchdown-with-50-new-enel-x-ev-chargers/   TESLA’S MASSIVE 1GWH MEGAPACK BATTERY PROJECT WITH PG&E IS APPROVED "Tesla’s massive project to deploy 1GWh of Megapacks to create a giant energy storage system in California with PG&E has received approval from the local authorities." says Electrek: "It involves four separate energy storage projects and two of them should become the world’s largest battery systems. the Tesla project will be a 182.5MW / 730MWh, which could eventually go up to 1.1GWh. Tesla is listing the project as having a total capacity of 1,200MWh, which would mean that each Megapack has a capacity of 2,673kWh. The total capacity of those 449 Megapacks represents more energy capacity than Tesla Energy deployed throughout its first 3 years of operation – all Powerpacks and Powerwalls combined."   In the comments: "This will replace 3 existing gas plants and can be built in less than a year. This is the very definition of efficiency and efficiency eventually always wins." Notice that the 1,200 MW-hr energy rating is 4x the 300 MW power rating; that is, the packs can supply the peak power rating for about 4 hours. That's a big portion of the evening power peak when most people get home from work and turn on lots of appliances and home heating/cooling. Peak power can be 10x the cost of regular power and is usually supplied by natural gas fired steam turbines. This is a smart move by PG&E to reduce the total cost of electricity to their customers. While it's only a first step given the magnitude of the power consumption on the grid, it is an indicator of where technology is taking us in grid modernization.   https://electrek.co/2020/02/27/tesla-1gwh-megapack-battery-project-pge-approved/   A SNAPSHOT OF EU NEW PASSENGER CAR MARKETS IN JANUARY Starting this year, manufacturers in the European Union (EU) must comply with the next phase of mandatory CO2 standards for new vehicle fleets. An average fleet-wide target of 95 grams per kilometer (g/km) applies to 95% of the new passenger cars in 2020, and will apply to the whole new car fleet from 2021." says the ICCT.org: "In France, for example, the average CO2 level of new cars dropped from 113 g/km in December to 96 g/km in January—a 15% improvement within only a month's time.   In 2020, every low-emission vehicle registered counts twice towards manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions. Norway has implemented a strong vehicle tax based on CO2 and NOx emissions and vehicle weight.  In Germany, electric vehicles gained in popularity, increasing from a level of 4% in December 2019 to 6.5% in January 2020. . It seems as if manufacturers are increasingly revealing their hands, not only showcasing new electric models but also marketing them in large quantities."   https://theicct.org/blog/staff/snapshot-eu-new-pv-markets-jan2020   MERCEDES TEASES THREE NEW PLUG-IN HYBRIDS "Mercedes is gearing up to introduce three new plug-in hybrid models this month starting with an announcement on their corporate Facebook page. According to the video, Mercedes plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid version of the GLA SUV, CLA Sedan, and finally the CLA Shooting Brake. Is the market ready for an electrified line-up of budget-friendly Mercedes products? " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once."   https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   I’m waving a magic wand and installing a charge point of any speed or type free of charge for you – what is it, where and why.   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. " asks Motor1: "Each of these three vehicles will certainly use almost identical powertrains which makes it quite easy for Mercedes to launch all three versions at once."   https://www.motor1.com/news/401473/mercedes-reveal-three-plugin-hybrids/       NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. On this show we discussed the 1955 Dodge La Femme and how it was a dismal failure of an attempt to market a car to women. We looked at the 20 top-selling compact luxury cars in 2019 and how they were ranked by the editors of Autoweek.com. We discussed the panic in at VW HQ as the on-sale date approaches for the critical ID3 electric car touted as a rival to the Tesla Model 3. Unfortunately, the software flaws keep piling up and it was reported that there was a military-level effort applied to fixing the bugs. For our Bring a Trailer picks, Todd liked a 1994 Lexus LS400 with only 5,400 and John M. was thrilled with a 1970 Mercury Marauder X-100 Coupe originally sold new to the Fresno Catholic Diocese. In the news, we talked about the upper laser blade lights in the Tesla Cybertruck, the fact that the 2020 C8 Corvette is a huge hit for GM, Toyota's highlander XLE Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient 3-row SUV on the market and the fact that Toyota makes the most reliable hybrids. Model Y deliveries are starting in March. And the Chevy Impala was put out of its misery permanently. We also talked about the cancellation of the 90th Geneva International Motor Show due to fears of the Covid-9 virus and the effect the virus is having on the entire automobile industry.

Show #707   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 24th February 2020. 2 million downloads - did it last weekend!   WHEN RANGE ISN'T THE REAL RANGE "Tesla allows its owners to use more of the battery capacity by switching from its "Daily" driving setting to a special "Trip" setting, which is designed to provide maximum range. But the company has warned that using the function can cause battery degradation and that recharging the battery also could take longer." says Consumer Reports: " In the Trip driving setting, our Model 3 achieved 350 miles.  Models from Jaguar and Porsche actually do better in real-world driving than in the EPA tests. a Top Gear test in 2018 yielded 291 miles on a single charge for the I-Pace, about 24 percent better than the government estimate. Audi decided it was important to increase battery life while also delivering more consistent performance, company spokesman Mark Dahncke says. The fully charged Audi uses 88 percent of the battery’s capacity rather than 100 percent, he says. That limits range but makes the battery last longer.  Porsche spokesman Calvin Kim says Porsche’s cars are known for performance and on-road capability. Battery range isn’t as much a factor for consumers looking for a high-speed sports car."   From Tom at InsideEVs when he drove the Taycan Turbo driving from Atlanta, Georgia to Daytona Beach, Florida: "Even with the cold weather and rain, we averaged 2.96 miles per kWh over the 436-mile trip. If you multiply that consumption rate by the 83.7 usable capacity the Taycan Turbo has, you come up with 248-miles of range per charge. That's not bad, and much better than the EPA range rating of 201 miles per charge. Also notable is the fact that the EPA provided the range figures themselves, and that's not how it usually happens. Many people don't realize that the manufacturer does the range testing and provides the EPA with the range rating and the data to back it up. The EPA has the choice to accept that data and publish it, or to then do their own internal testing. In the case of the Taycan, the EPA decided to do their own range certification, and those numbers came out much lower than what Porsche expected. "   Read Consumer Reports here: "https://www.consumerreports.org/hybrids-evs/tesla-ups-ante-on-model-y-range-underscoring-ev-lead/"   https://insideevs.com/reviews/395038/porsche-taycan-road-trip-240-mile-range/   RIMAC C_TWO UNVEILED IN GENEVA From Youtube: "Next week we will unveil the final form of the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva International Motor Show. Not only a new shape but also a new name. In today’s episode of Mondays with Mate, our founder and CEO Mate Rimac will give you an exclusive preview and explanation of the changes that you can expect. The unveiling will take place on the 3rd of March at 12:00 CET."   [clip about cameras]   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n356-dqSmM   WATCH THE ELECTRIC VW I.D. R EMBARASS A MCLAREN 720S IN A DRAG RACE "To put the I.D. R’s performance into context, Chris Harris of Top Gear heads to the track to see what VW’s electric show pony is all about. The VW I.D. R is powered by a trio of electric motors with two up front and one in the rear. These electric motors are linked to two separate battery packs for perfect weight distribution. The result is an 0 to 60 time in 2 seconds and cornering speeds the surpass an F1 car. All of this is more than enough to embarrass a McLaren 720s in a drag race.   [clip about cameras]   https://www.motor1.com/news/400206/vw-id-r-race-mclaren-720s/   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Om28CUu1m3I&feature=emb_title   VOLKSWAGEN ID R SPORTS CAR TO PIONEER SECRET BATTERY TECH "Volkswagen is planning an advanced new electric sports car that is earmarked to act as a figurehead for a limited range of performance-based ID R road cars and is set to go into production by the middle of the decade." says Autocar: " It has been suggested that the ID R could compete against the second-generation Tesla Roadster, if an internal ID sub-brand strategy paper calling for the proposed model to be assembled at the company’s Karmann offshoot comes to fruition. Porsche is developing an all-electric Boxster. While that model is thought to be based on either the Taycan’s PPE platform or an adapted version of the existing combustion engine platform, it’s possible the Stuttgart brand could make use of the MEB platform to create a sibling to the ID sports car."   The company’s motorsport director, Sven Smeets: "We are beginning to work on the first batteries for the performance road cars, using the dedicated team from the ID R, so there will be a direct link between them. The batteries start in the same area. At the moment we’re finalising the performance parameters of the batteries.”   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-id-r-sports-car-pioneer-secret-battery-tech   HYUNDAI FOCUS ON EU ELECTRIC CAR MARKET "Hyundai started the year focusing on deliver electric cars to EU (European Union) countries, leaving its domestic market temporally forsaken." reports Pedro at Push EVs: "Due to stricter emissions regulations that started this year, Hyundai needs to increase its sales of electric cars in the EU to avoid huge fines. Therefore, from March this year Hyundai will start producing the Kona Electric in its Czech manufacturing plant to supply the European market, but until then, Hyundai sends almost all units produced in South Korea to Europe.   Domestic market (South Korea)   Hyundai IONIQ Electric: 2 Hyundai Kona Electric: 35     Foreign market (Mostly EU)   Hyundai IONIQ Electric: 1.403 Hyundai Kona Electric: 3.321"   Read more here: https://pushevs.com/2020/02/21/hyundai-focus-on-eu-electric-car-market/   LUCID MOTORS ANNOUNCES LONG-TERM PARTNERSHIP WITH LG CHEM FOR BATTERIES FOR LUCID AIR EV "Lucid Motors said that it selected LG Chem for a long-term partnership because its batteries provide the ideal level of efficiency, with those batteries further optimized by Lucid to meet or exceed all target goals for range, energy density, and recharge/discharge rates." says Green Car Congress: "The advanced battery cells provided by LG Chem effectively allow Lucid to lock in core volume production forecasts for the Lucid Air for the next several years, with additional agreements to be announced in the future for special versions of the EV."   https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200224-lucid.html   CYBERTRUCK WIDTH @elonmusk: "in some prior tweets I’d said production Cybertruck would be ~80” wide (vs ~84” body width at unveil). This is slightly too small. Will be closer to 82”, but come standard with upper laser blade lights."   Inside EVs cites the reasons being bed width, three across seating and towing.     NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   How to persuade your friends, family and colleagues to buy an EV?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 235 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #687   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 4th February 2020. UK PLANS TO BAN NEW INTERNAL-COMBUSTION CARS BY 2035 "A ban on the sale of new gasoline, diesel, and even hybrid cars could go into effect in the UK as soon as 2035, under a new proposal by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. That deadline is five years earlier than previously planned." reports Autoblog: "The UK government in 2018 said it planned to outlaw the sale of gasoline and diesel new cars and vans starting in 2040, but that proposal still permitted ultra-low-emissions hybrids. The new proposal not only moves the date five years closer, it permits only zero-emissions vehicles."   "Interestingly, the UK’s upcoming ban actually includes hybrid vehicles, which have long been promoted by veteran carmakers as “electrified” cars. Yet save for plug-in hybrids, which can be charged from an EV charging station, hybrids like the Toyota Prius still use petrol as their sole source of fuel." is how Teslarati sees it: "With hybrid cars now a part of the ICE ban because of their need for petrol, the UK will be focusing on pushing pure electric cars."   The Telegraph newspaper said: "Britain’s biggest car maker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and other luxury UK auto firms will be among the biggest victims of a ban on diesel and petrol sales by 2035, analysts fear. Experts said that JLR is seriously exposed as profits depend on the large SUVs produced by its Land Rover arm, which outsell Jaguar models by three to one. It is understood that executives at the firm had no advance warning of Government plans to bring forward a ban on diesel and petrol sales from 2040 to 2035. Moving the deadline could also mean car companies writing off earlier investment in hybrid technology."   David Greenwood, professor of advanced propulsion at Warwick University, said: “It’s very difficult to deliver big and heavy cars, like full-size SUVs, which are fully electric and have the long range that people expect.”   According to BBC News: "The change in plans, which will be subject to a consultation, comes after experts warned the previous target date of 2040 would still leave old conventional cars on the roads following the clean-up date of 2050."   And finally from Thisismoney.co.uk: "However, the inclusion of hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles - marketed until now as green models - might have come as quite a shock to some, especially the manufacturers who have heavily invested in their development and the UK motorists who've already paid a premium to buy one. What came as more of a shock was the decision to also outlaw hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars from that date too, meaning those that run on a combination of petrol or diesel and electricity will also be drummed out of showrooms in 15 year's time. A decision to remove financial incentives to help motorists buy plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) at the end of 2018 was the first signal that the government might turn its back on hybrid technology."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/04/uk-could-ban-gasoline-diesel-and-hybrid-cars-starting-in-2035/   https://www.teslarati.com/uk-death-sentence-ice-cars-hybrids/   https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2020/02/05/electric-car-sales-surge-confusion-reigns-policy-hybrids/   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-51366123   FORD ENGINEER TALKS MACH-E SPECS "A Ford engineer hosted an “ask me anything” (AMA) thread on Reddit over the weekend.  In it, they let us in on a few new bits of information about the car (including battery and charging specs), and talked about his opinion of it, particularly in comparison to the Tesla Model Y, which will target a similar market as the Mach-E." writes Electrek: "The engineer was less complimentary of Tesla’s manufacturing capabilities.  While they had great things to say about Tesla’s battery and motor engineering (which “outpaces the industry by 5yrs easy”)The Mach-E has a face camera in the steering wheel cluster which will be used for future autonomous driving purposes.  It will be able to detect whether or not the driver is in the seat and paying attention to the road.  The engineer suggests that this will be better than Tesla’s “autopilot nag” warnings which require steering wheel movement every once in a while, allowing a “more natural experience and you can rest your arms.” Also, the Mach-E’s cluster will be capable of side-by-side displays of both Ford’s “sync” infotainment system and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto."   https://electrek.co/2020/02/03/ford-engineer-talks-mach-e-specs-teases-features-compares-to-tesla-model-y/   PRODUCTION AT GIGAFACTORY TURNS PROFITABLE "Panasonic reports an increase in automotive battery sales (sadly there are no detailed numbers for the subcategory). The main factor is an increase of 21700 cylindrical cell type sales/production in North America at the Tesla Gigafactory. The production lines for Tesla are now profitable not only on a monthly basis, but for the entire Q4 2019." says InsideEVs: "On the other hand, cylindrical cells produced in Japan (the 18650 type), for cars like the Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X, continue to decrease. The decrease affected also prismatic batteries in North America."   https://insideevs.com/news/396595/panasonic-q4-2019-report/   NORWAY SOLD 4,236 NEW ELECTRIC CARS IN JANUARY "4,236 electric cars were newly registered in Norway in the first month of the new year. The market share of BEV in passenger car registrations was thus 44.3%. By far the most popular model across all drive systems was the Audi e-tron." writes electrive: "The 3,270 hybrid passenger cars included 1,919 plug-in hybrids.  If both types of drive are added together, 78.5 per cent of all newly registered passenger cars in Norway in December were thus equipped with an electric or plug-in hybrid drive."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/02/04/norway-sold-4236-new-electric-cars-in-january/   FORMULA E REVEALS GEN2 EVO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CAR Formula E and the FIA have today given fans a first look at the newly named Gen2 EVO, using a reimagined design that will debut in season seven when the electric racing series competes under the banner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The modifications to the bodywork have been made midway through the current four-year cycle of the ‘Gen2’ era, to provide a fresh new look for Formula E. The car will continue to be fitted with 18-inch MICHELIN Pilot Sport all-weather tyres, specially designed for use in both wet and dry conditions. Covers will come off the Gen2 EVO for the first time on the FIA stand at the Geneva International Motor Show on March 3.   OVO ENERGY AND MITSUBISHI TEAM UP TO OFFER FREE EV MILES "Customers who purchase a Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) will be able to charge it for free for the first 10,000 miles of its use through OVO Energy, the two companies have today announced." accordingg to BusinessGreen: "New owners of the Outlander would have to switch to OVO's 100 per cent green energy Energy EV Everywhere tariff to benefit from the deal, after which their accounts wouild would credited with £20 each month for 24 months to cover the typical cost of charging the vehicle. Some 50,000 Outlanders have been registered in the UK since 2014. The plug-in hybrid SUV consumes electricity at a rate of 3.68 miles/kWh, which equates to 2,717kWh of energy to travel 10,000 miles."   https://www.businessgreen.com/news/4009988/ovo-energy-mitsubishi-team-offer-free-ev-miles   GERMAN CAR SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE, HAS ELECTRIC CARS "Cluno is a German company that helps its customers drive in a cost-effective manner. It’s marketed toward those who would rent a car often but don’t want to own one. It includes several different electric vehicle models in its lineup." reports CleanTechnica: "Cluno has six electric vehicles for you to choose from. The lowest-priced option is the Renault ZOE 50 Experience at €449 per month. The Tesla Model 3, Long Range AWD is the most expensive option at €1,299 per month."   https://www.autoblog.com/2020/02/04/uk-could-ban-gasoline-diesel-and-hybrid-cars-starting-in-2035/     RENAULT MEGANE 2020: PLUG-IN TECH OFFERED FOR FIRST TIME ON HATCH "The new Megane also offers a new powertrain with the introduction of E-Tech plug-in hybrid. This features a four-cylinder 1.6-litre petrol engine with two electric motors and an innovative multi-mode clutch-less gearbox. With its 9.8kWh battery it can run on full-electric mode for 30 miles in mixed cycle and 40 miles in urban cycle." says leasing.com   https://leasing.com/car-leasing-news/renault-megane-2020/   NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week…   On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs?   I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 231 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #669   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 17th January 2020. GM’S ELECTRIC HUMMER "Americans still love hulking SUVs, even as they realize these gas guzzlers contribute to global warming. What to do? Revive the Hummer, duh. And replace the old 10-mile-per gallon diesel engine with an electric powertrain fueled off the grid." says Yahoo! Finance: "(GM) will bring back its Hummer name starting in 2022, according to news reports, adding the monster truck to its GMC lineup. There will be no gas- or diesel-powered version this time, just an electric. GM will supposedly run a Super Bowl ad with NBA wizard LeBron James on Feb. 3 to announce the reincarnation. vA radical battery-powered truck will demonstrate GM has something to show for its EV investments—something critics and buyers can get fired up about. A zero-emission Hummer will also solve a problem for potential buyers who love the muscle but don’t want to be ostracized for belching pollution."   Fool.com says:" Besides the nameplate, GM intends to make the vehicle resemble the earlier Hummer, tapping strongly into brand recognition and nostalgia. Specific Hummer models will include a pickup truck -- probably launched first in late 2021 or early 2022 -- and a large off-road-capable SUV. It recently teamed up with LG Chemical (OTC:LGCLF) to construct a $2.3 billion electric car battery factory in Ohio. According to GM's press releases, the massive facility will produce at least 30 gigawatt hours (GWh) of battery capacity annually, enough to outfit several hundred thousand electric vehicles.  In addition, GM is pumping $3 billion into renovating its Detroit-Hamtramck plant for the express purpose of building electric pickups and SUVs."   https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/01/18/gms-electric-hummer-and-pickup-plans-may-jolt-futu.aspx   IONITY ANNOUNCES A KWH-BASED CHARGER PRICING PLAN "IONITY, the pan-European ultra-fast charging network, has announced that from January 31, 2020, it will change its pricing structure from "per session" to "per kWh." says InsideEVs: "The new price will be €0.79 ($0.88) per kWh for "customers without contracts."   And from Teslarati: "That’s a substantial premium compared to the Tesla Supercharging Network, which has a rate of about 0.25 EUR ($0.28) per kWh. Thus, with this new pricing structure in place, an Audi e-tron or Porsche Taycan owner would end up paying about $80 to charge the all-electric SUV from zero to 100%. Considering that these vehicles are capable of traveling just over 200 miles on a charge"   RENAULT OFFICIALLY CONFIRMS THE TWINGO ZE From a Renault press release: "2020 will mark a new stage in its electric offensive with the launch of Twingo Z.E. and the deployment of its new E-Tech hybrid and plug-in hybrid offers."   "Renault finally confirmed the launch of the Renault Twingo ZE for this year." according to PushEVs: "We can expect it to be officially unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show which takes place in 5-15 March 2020. There are some rumors that this car is already being produced and tested on public roads, therefore soon we should starting seeing some spy shots. Previously Renault feared that a Twingo ZE could cannibalize the sales of the ZOE. But now the new Renault ZOE can easily differentiate itself from a smaller and cheaper electric car with its improved interior, WLTP range of 395 km and a price above 30.000 euros. The Renault Twingo ZE will have in the VW electric triplets its most direct alternatives."   https://pushevs.com/2020/01/18/renault-officially-confirms-the-twingo-ze/   BMW TO CONVERT MUNICH PLANT FOR I4 PRODUCTION THIS SUMMER "BMW will be closing its main plant in Munich for six weeks this summer to convert it to producing the all-electric BMW i4. The EV is scheduled to go into series production next year, still with battery cells bought in. However, this could change in future." writes electrive: "In future, the i4 electric car will roll off the production line together with the 3 and 4 series models. According to BMW, more than 1,000 robots in the body shop and assembly area will be converted to then flexibly assemble the various drive forms on a production line according to demand. BMW will still purchase the battery cells for the i4, from CATL and Samsung SDI among others as reported. Although BMW maintains its own Battery Cell Competence Center for research, it does not manufacture the crucial cells itself."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/17/bmw-to-convert-munich-plant-for-i4-production-this-summer/   FORD INVESTS €42 MILLION IN VALENCIA FOR NEW HYBRID MODELS Ford today announced a €42 million investment in its Valencia manufacturing plant, Spain, to support the company’s electrification strategy with a state-of-the-art battery assembly facility in addition to new S-MAX Hybrid and Galaxy Hybrid models. Two new assembly lines will enable the advanced lithium-ion batteries that help power all-new Kuga Plug-In Hybrid, all-new Kuga Hybrid, and new S-MAX Hybrid and Galaxy Hybrid to be produced.   Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid CO2 emissions from 26 g/km Ford Kuga EcoBlue Hybrid CO2 emissions from 111 g/km   https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/feu/en/news/2020/01/16/Valencia.html   ELECTRIC TAXIS TO GO WIRELESS THANKS TO NEW CHARGING TECH TRIAL The UK Transport Secretary announced today (17 January 2020) that £3.4 million will be invested in trials for wireless charging of electric taxis in Nottingham. Wireless charging at taxi ranks could provide an alternative to plugs and chargepoints, meaning multiple taxis can recharge at once, supporting drivers to charge up more easily. It would also reduce clutter on our streets. Installing wireless chargers at taxi ranks offers drivers the chance to recharge while waiting for their next passengers, so they can help the environment and start their journeys quicker. The technology, allowing for shorter and more frequent bursts of charging. Ten Nissan and LEVC electric taxis in Nottingham will be fitted with wireless charging hardware for 6 months to trial taxi rank-based charging.   https://www.gov.uk/government/news/electric-taxis-to-go-wireless-thanks-to-new-charging-tech-trial   ROADIE LETS YOU VIEW TESLACAM AND SENTRY MODE VIDEOS ON YOUR PHONE It is basically a Raspberry Pi Zero programmed by Jake Luciani to store, protect, and make the videos your Tesla records with TeslaCam or Sentry Mode available to your smartphone. That implies you can save them or share them instantly." says InsideEVs: " While Tesla erases the videos after about one hour or two, to save space, Roadie keeps them for more time. It is a handy solution for those accidents in which you did not have time to deal with the video, and it ends up lost. A hit-and-run, for example, or something as unexpected as that. Show #408.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 7th March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Formula E on terrestrial free TV this weekend, Hong Kong race to be screened live by BBC2.   CARLOS GHOSN RELEASED ON BAIL "An an unusual move in Japan, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was released on bail Wednesday after 108 days in jail, according to a report in Automotive News." Says Green Car Reports: "Ghosn, who is known as the father of the Nissan Leaf for his work championing the car's production, was arrested in November on charges of allegedly misusing company funds and underreporting his compensation for 10 years. In Japan, criminal suspects are routinely held without bail, and prosecutors can file new charges against jailed suspects to extend their detention, as they had with Ghosn."   “I am innocent and totally committed to vigorously defending myself in a fair trial against these meritless and unsubstantiated accusations,” he said in a statement following his release.   https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1121916_japanese-judge-releases-former-nissan-chairman-ghosn-on-bail     SUPERCHARGER V3 CHARGES AT 1000 MILES PER HOUR V3 is a completely new architecture for Supercharging. A new 1MW power cabinet with a similar design to our utility-scale products supports peak rates of up to 250kW per car. At this rate, a Model 3 Long Range operating at peak efficiency can recover up to 75 miles of charge in 5 minutes and charge at rates of up to 1,000 miles per hour. Combined with other improvements we’re announcing today, V3 Supercharging will ultimately cut the amount of time customers spend charging by an average of 50%, as modeled on our fleet data.Supercharger stations with V3’s new power electronics are designed to enable any owner to charge at the full power their battery can take – no more splitting power with a vehicle in the stall next to you. With these significant technical improvements, we anticipate the typical charging time at a V3 Supercharger will drop to around 15 minutes.   On-Route Battery Warmup New Supercharging infrastructure isn’t the only way we are improving our customers’ charging experience. Beginning this week, Tesla is rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. Now, whenever you navigate to a Supercharger station, your vehicle will intelligently heat the battery to ensure you arrive at the optimal temperature to charge, reducing average charge times for owners by 25%.   This combination of higher peak power with V3, dedicated vehicle power allocation across Supercharger sites, and On-Route Battery Warmup enables customers to charge in half the time and Tesla to serve more than twice the number of customers per hour. Additionally, we are also unlocking 145kW charge rates for our 12,000+ V2 Superchargers over the coming weeks. By increasing the number of vehicles we’re able to charge at each Supercharger in a day, the investment we’re making in our network will go significantly further with every V3 station deployed. Paired with other savings, these efficiencies will translate to an increased pace of investment for Superchargers moving forward, with a continued focus on getting to 100% ownership coverage across all regions we operate.   We will increase Model S and X charging speeds via software updates in the coming months. V3 Supercharging will roll out to the wider fleet in an over the air firmware update to all owners in Q2 as more V3 Superchargers come online. Our first non-beta V3 Supercharger site will break ground next month, with North American sites ramping in Q2 and Q3 before coming to Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4.   So we need to see all of this in the context of the Model Y, the Semi Truck and the Roadster.     PORSCHE TAYCAN DEBUT AND LAUNCH INFORMATION UNVEILED? “We may finally have some much-anticipated information about the Porsche Taycan reveal and deliveries.” “Porsche’s first all-electric car is coming, and many people are extremely excited about its potential. So much so, that orders are already sold out for at least the first year. Reports say that Porsche plans to build about 40,000 cars initially, however, it seems they’re all spoken for at this point. Hybrid Cars were apprised of some information on the Taycan EV Forum. The site came across a tweet from a user whose Porsche rep leaked some new details about the upcoming performance EV’s timeline.”   “It claims that the Taycan will be unveiled this coming September, with deliveries starting in January 2020. As Hybrid Cars points out, the Frankfurt Motor Show is in September, so this might be the case.”   Per my Porsche rep, Porsche has closed down its Deposit program for the US due to high demand, Sep 2019 unveil confirmed, 1mo prior to unveil build out for orders to open up, Jan 2020 deliveries   Dennis C. (@ClarkDennisM)   https://insideevs.com/porsche-taycan-debut-launch-information/amp/     KIA BRINGS E-SOUL TO EUROPE, UPGRADES NIRO HYBRID AND PHEV Kia used the Geneva International Motor Show as the platform to introduce the battery-electric e-Soul to Europe, as well as to reveal new upgrades to the Niro Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid. Every Kia vehicle on show in Geneva employs the brand’s mild-hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle technology. The e-Soul makes its European debut with a choice of two electric powertrains. Now in its third generation, the Kia e-Soul’s new-generation battery packs—either 64 kWh or 39.2 kWh in capacity—are up to 30% more energy efficient than Europe’s current best-selling electric vehicle. The car is offered in Europe without the option of an internal combustion engine. The new e-Soul goes on-sale in select European markets from the end of the first quarter of 2019, sold as standard with Kia’s 7-year, 150,000-kilometer warranty, which also covers the car’s electric motor and battery pack.   ALL-NEW PEUGEOT E-208 LOOKS DYNAMIC IN GENEVA "The all-new Peugeot 208 with the all-electric e-208 version shown in Geneva in GT trim, raised a lot of interest. The new French subcompact brings to the table completely new dynamic styling." says Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "In the current specification – especially with the 50 kWh battery,  WLTP range of 340 km (211 miles) and 100 kW electric motor – it could be the tamer of the Renault ZOE, but there is one doubt. In several months, ZOE will get major upgrade in the form of a second generation version, which should make both cars at least competitive. Orders will be accepted from late summer 2019 on, while the launch is expected in the fall of 2019."   https://insideevs.com/peugeot-e-208-debut-geneva-photos-videos/amp/   CURRENT BMW I3 TO GET REVAMP RATHER THAN ALL-NEW MODEL “The BMW i3 is entering its seventh year of production, but the electric car will continue to be produced with further updates planned. The BMW i3 will last beyond the usual seven-year model cycle and get further updates, according to the boss of BMW i Division." Reports John McIlroy for AutoExpress: "The electric city car recently received its second battery upgrade, taking the capacity to 120Ah (42.2kWh) and the real-world range to around 160 miles. However, speaking to Auto Express at the recent Geneva Motor Show, i Division chief Robert Irlinger said the latest battery tweaks would not be the last upgrades in the i3’s life - and stressed that the car is not bound by conventional life cycles."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i3/106240/current-bmw-i3-to-get-revamp-rather-than-all-new-model   NISSAN TO INTRODUCE E-POWER MODELS IN EUROPE Nissan unveiled the IMQ concept crossover, equipped with its award-winning e-POWER system, and announced it will launch the electrified powertrain technology in Europe. The technology will debut in European markets by 2022, Roel de Vries, Nissan corporate vice president, said at the Geneva International Motor Show. e-POWER has been a hit with consumers in Japan, where it’s helped make the Nissan Note the country’s best-selling registered car. Combining 100% electric motor drive with a gasoline engine that charges the battery, e-POWER cars give customers instant, smooth acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency. Introducing the technology in Europe will reinforce Nissan’s leadership in electrified vehicles in the region, where the Nissan LEAF is already the best-selling electric car. Building on the success of LEAF, e-POWER will be among a suite of new technologies coming to Nissan’s best-selling vehicles in Europe in the coming three years. By 2022 sales of electrified Nissan vehicles will increase five-fold, and by the end of that year will be double the market average.       COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. This highly anticipated electric car is expected to outsell the Tesla Model 3. The unveiling will take place at Tesla’s LA Design Studio." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "According to Tesla, the Model Y will be largely based upon the Model 3. This means its cost to develop should be on the lower side, though that doesn’t imply a low price tag necessarily. The newest rumors, combined with info from Musk, indicate a base price $40,000, provided it’s offered with the smallest Model 3 battery pack. However, we don’t think that will be available on the Y and for certain, not anytime soon. Previous rumors indicated Model Y would be a 3-row crossover, though that seems a bit questionable too."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-y-unveiling-set-for-march-14/   FIRST TESLA SUPERCHARGER VERSION 3.0 TO GO LIVE ON WEDNESDAY Staying with InsideEVs: "We’re now just a few days away from the opening of the very first Tesla Supercharger Version 3.0. Tesla CEO Elon Musk says it opens up this Wednesday. This new, higher-powered Supercharger will enhance the long-distance travel capabilities of Tesla vehicles." "We presume that all newer Tesla vehicles will be able to suck down a whole lot more juice at the new Supercharger 3.0. However, the actual outputs of these units is not yet known. Nor do we know which particular Teslas will be able to charge at the highest rates. We do suspect that the Tesla Model 3 will benefit the most from these new Superchargers though."   https://insideevs.com/first-tesla-supercharger-version-3-live-wednesday/   VW ELECTRIC BEACH BUGGY FOR GENEVA Volkswagen presents the ID. BUGGY at the Geneva International Motor Show. On the evening prior to the first press day, the concept car will celebrate its world premiere at the Volkswagen Group Night. The ID. BUGGY is a zero-emissions high-tech vehicle for summer, on the beach or in the city, based on the modular electric drive matrix (MEB). following on from the ID. (compact class), ID. BUZZ (van), ID. CROZZ (SUV) and ID. VIZZION (saloon), the new ID. BUGGY is the fifth concept car based on the MEB, with which Volkswagen has used to confirm the multifaceted nature of the ID. Family.   ABB FIA FORMULA E CONCEPT LIVERY "Mercedes has unveiled an ABB FIA Formula E concept livery ahead of its entry into the electric championship in 2019/20. In a video released on Twitter, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff hailed the manufacturer’s achievements in the DTM, which it left at the end of last season ahead of joining the season six FE grid alongside fellow newcomer Porsche." reports Motorsport.com: "Mercedes is understood to have received its test car from FE supplier Spark to allow it to progress with its 15-day manufacturer testing programme for the 2018/19 season." Wolff said: "“The potential of Formula E is enormous. With each day of progress in our preparations for the first race at the end of this year, our anticipation for the new challenge grows. The competition with Porsche, Audi and BMW, and all the other great manufacturers, will be a very special one – and I’m looking forward to it. We look at this new chapter with excitement and we would be happy if everyone one of your supports us on this thrilling journey.”"   https://insideevs.com/mercedes-reveals-formula-e-concept-livery/   PIËCH MARK ZERO CLAIMS 5-MINUTE RECHARGE FOR 300-MILE RANGE "The new brand Piëch Automotive presents a concept of its new electric sports car, dubbed the Mark Zero, at the Geneva Motor Show. It is the first in a line of products that Piëch Automotive plans to launch in the next three years." according to Motor1.com: "The Piëch Mark Zero is an electric gran tourer that measures in at 14.2 feet (4.32 meters) long, with a wheelbase of 8.6 feet (2.62 meters), and a height of 4.1 feet (1.25 meters). The concept is powered by three electric motors: an electric motor on the front axle produces 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts), and two synchronous motors on the rear produce 201 hp (150 kW). Acceleration to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) takes 3.2 seconds, and top speed is listed at 155 mph (250 kmh)."   https://www.motor1.com/news/307923/piech-mark-zero-electric-coupe/   RIMAC C_TWO MIGHT IMPRESS EVEN MORE IN PRODUCTION FORM "Supercar enthusiasts have a lot of reasons to get excited about automakers embracing electrification as plenty of zero-emissions machines have been announced with staggering technical specifications. Case in point, Rimac unveiled the C_Two nearly a year ago in Geneva and now they’re about to show the bonkers electric hypercar with a fresh new coat of paint." reports Adrian Padeneau for InsideEVs: "Rimac isn’t willing to go into any details for the time being regarding the upgrades they’re planning for the powertrain, but they do say these will be possible thanks to “new development efforts.” For the time being, we know the C_Two has four electric motors with a combined output of 1,914 horsepower and an instant torque of 2,300 Newton-meters (1,696 pound-feet). It’s enough electric punch for a sprint to 60 mph (96 kph) in precisely 1.85 seconds, with the 0-186 mph (0-300 kph) taking just 11.8 seconds."   https://insideevs.com/rimac-c_two-might-specs-production-form/   PININFARINA'S 1900 HORSEPOWER BATTISTA WILL GO OVER 217 MPH "As it promised last year, Pininfarina is taking on Rimac with the Battista, a 1900 horsepower/2,300 nm (1,700 ft-pound) hypercar EV that the company calls "the most powerful road-legal car ever designed and built in Italy." according to Engadget: "Suffice to say, this car will be quick, with a top speed of "over 350 km/h" (217 MPH) and a zero to 62 mph time of "under 2 seconds." Though the target market might not care much, it will have a 120 kWh battery that'll give it about 450 km (279 miles) of range."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/03/04/pininfarinas-1900-horsepower-battista-will-go-over-217-mph/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #402.   Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st March 2019. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support.   More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000."   NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD"   Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/   PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. Joining the new models will be a Plug-in Hybrid range and a revamped electrified version of the iconic PEUGEOT Lion. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes.   http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726   AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228   SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531   JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.”   WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype   KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit."   https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. We switched on the CCS outlets of our 175 kW chargers again. Tests by HUBER+SUHNER confirm that the liquid cooled cables meet all safety standards. We will remove the tape and stickers from the cables today. If you are at a station that still has tape around the CCS outlet, feel free to give us a call if you want to help us out removing it." Electrify America: no statement I’ve seen but I was sent a Twitter note to say they’re online too   TESLA EXPECTS SMALL PROFIT CNBC reports on the Tesla Q4 2018 earnings ahead of the call: "Musk said preliminary results show the company made a profit on an unadjusted basis during the fourth quarter of 2018, but it was less than the previous three months. In the first quarter, higher-priced Model 3s to Europe and Asia "will hopefully allow us, with great difficulty, effort and some luck, to target a tiny profit," Musk said in a Jan. 18 company update."   https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/29/tesla-reports-earnings-as-shares-fall-amid-a-few-red-flags.html   ASPARK OWL ELECTRIC HYPERCAR TARGETS NÜRBURGRING LAP RECORD "You might remember the Aspark Owl electric hypercar from its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Development is still underway on the Japanese-built machine, and the company now says that a run at the Nürburgring record could be under consideration." says Chris Bruce, Editor for Motor1.com: "[The] Aspark Owl performances are allowing us to aim [for] the Nürburgring record," a company spokesperson told Top Gear. Aspark's testing already shows that the Owl is capable of reaching 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in 1.9 seconds. The company's official specs show the hypercar being able to reach 174 mph (280 kph). At a price of 3.1 million euros ($3.5 million) and production of just 50 units, the Owl will be a very rare machine, and the company will deliver the first one in 2020."   https://www.motor1.com/news/302941/aspark-owl-nurburgring-record-attempt/   NEVS AND KOENIGSEGG FORM A STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP Swedish car makers NEVS AB and Koenigsegg AB are together forming a strategic partnership, enabling the development of parallel vehicle models in slightly higher volumes with emphasis on electrification, as well as strengthening growth opportunities in the hyper car segment. A reminder NEVS came from ashes of Saab, and Koenigsegg was founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg, with the mission to create the perfect sports car NEVS is making a capital injection of EUR 150 million, thereby taking a 20 percent minority stake in Koenigsegg’s parent company. Additionally, the parties are forming a joint venture to expand into new market segments where NEVS AB is contributing USD 150 million in starting capital for a 65 percent stake and Koenigsegg obtains 35 percent by contributing primarily with intellectual property, technology licenses, and product design. Alongside NEVS capacity for production in Trollhättan and China, NEVS through its majority owner Evergrande, has a wide distribution platform and channels through ownership in one of China’s largest car retailers. Last week, Evergrande announced the acquisition of 58.07 percent in automobile battery maker Shanghai CENAT New Energy Co Ltd, a $156 million deal.   MITSUBISHI TO DEBUT ENGELBERG TOURER ELECTRIC SUV CONCEPT IN GENEVA "Mitsubishi will reveal at the 89th Geneva International Motor Show on March 5th its all-new Engelberg Tourer Concept." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The short note about the car says that Engelberg Tourer Concept will bring: more SUV, more EV, more technology and more style (named after a beautiful; rugged Alpine town with a history of sporting success). It’s highly probable that the Engelberg Tourer Concept is actually a new plug-in hybrid, which is bigger and has more all-electric range than the current aging Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV." Top Gear said: "Lagonda Vision Geneva 2018: Aston Valkryrie AMR Pro and the Lagonda Vision Given the success of the Outlander PHEV, it’s no surprise that Mitsubishi are trying to cash-in on the electric SUV trend, although it’s currently unclear as to whether this will also be a plug-in hybrid or if it’ll go fully electric. We’ll have to wait until 5 March to find that out, when more technical details will be announced and we’ll meet Engelberg in the flesh."   https://insideevs.com/mitsubishi-engelberg-tourer-ev-geneva/   https://www.topgear.com/car-news/geneva-motor-show/mitsubishi-calling-its-geneva-concept-engelberg   UK ISP IS TURNING BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE INTO EV CHARGING STATIONS "Liberty Global is testing a secondary use for its broadband cabinets, the streetside boxes that link internet connections from exchanges to homes and businesses. It's harnessing the infrastructure of its Virgin Media subsidiary to build electric vehicle charging stations in the UK." according to Engadget: "Liberty hopes to have up to six trial charging points set up by mid-April. It's also planning tests in Belgium through its Telenet network. Last year, Deutsche Telekom revealed plans to turn 12,000 cabinets into charging points."   https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/28/virgin-media-ev-charging-trial-liberty-global   AUDI E-TRON IS QUIETEST EV IN BJØRN NYLAND’S TESTS InsideEVs has been keeping an eye on Bjorn Nylands e-tron review videos: "Audi e-tron turns out to be the quietest electric car ever tested by Bjørn Nyland, averaging just 63 dB. The silence, even at high speeds, was earlier signaled by the Autogefühl review, which clearly said that it’s better than in the case of Tesla. Bjorn revealed that e-tron is around 2-3 dB below the second best Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-PACE, despite not necessarily having the quietest winter tires on it, at all speed levels"   https://insideevs.com/audi-e-tron-is-the-quietest-ev-in-bjorn-nylands-tests/   IN SHANGHAI, EVERY IKEA DELIVERY IS NOW MADE WITH AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE "In 2018, Ingka Group–the parent company of Ikea–made a bold pledge: By 2025, the company will deliver every item worldwide by electric vehicle. It started with a closer-range target of accomplishing the full switch to EVs in five cities–New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, and Shanghai–by 2020." writes Fast Compnay: "As of January 23, it’s already reached that goal in Shanghai. The company announced that in the inner city of Shanghai, all home deliveries are now carried out by electric vehicle."   https://www.fastcompany.com/90297201/in-shanghai-every-ikea-delivery-is-now-made-with-an-electric-vehicle   LOTUS AND WILLIAMS TEAM UP FOR RUMORED ELECTRIC HYPERCAR "Sports car maker Lotus and Williams Advanced Engineering have officially announced a new strategic partnership which will allow the two companies to share “research and development into advanced propulsion technologies.” " says Anthony Karr at Motor1.com: "Autocar claims the Norfolk-based brand is actually developing a hybrid hypercar codenamed Omega. Lotus is believed to be leading the development to ensure the car carries the brand’s DNA and meets its criteria for lightness. Williams will contribute its technical expertise in electric systems to the project and will probably supply the batteries. It is believed the Omega hypercar will use “at least two electric motors” in an all-wheel-drive powertrain configuration. Advanced battery technology should provide a range of more than 250 miles (402 kilometers) between two charges with a fast charging option available."   https://www.motor1.com/news/302878/lotus-williams-partnership-hypercar-rumors/   MORE TESLOOP HIGH MILEAGAE "Tesloop’s Model X, named Deuxy, just hit the 350,000 mile threshold, and founder Haydn Sonnad took to YouTube to share some lessons learned on the road to that impressive milestone. Battery degradation had been of particular importance in Tesloop’s vehicles because they not only put a lot of miles on their vehicles, but did so by loading their vehicles up every day and running routes back to back, with Supercharging sessions in between to fill the batteries back up." reports Kyle for CleanTechnica: "After putting over 350,000 miles on Deuxy, Tesloop recorded a 13% degradation in the capacity of the battery — compared to the range per charge it had when new. That translates to a range of 215 miles / 346 kilometers at a 95% charge today compared to 247 miles / 398 kilometers at 95% when it was new."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/28/350000-miles-in-a-tesla-model-x-just-18000-in-maintenance/   TOYOTA ADMITS TO LOSING PREVIOUSLY LOYAL CUSTOMERS TO TESLA And finally from Steven at InsideEVs: "According to Automotive News, Toyota’s defection rate is around nine percent. Interestingly, CEO of Toyota Motor North America Jim Lentz admitted that half of those previously loyal customers are moving to Tesla. Nonetheless, according to a report by Tesla, the Toyota Prius tops the list of non-Tesla cars that are traded in by Model 3 buyers. Gears and Beers: The Unashamedly Unprofessional Automotive Podcast

We're back for episode 36!It was Geneva International Motor Show this week, so we had much news to talk about, plus many arguments and tangents are to be found in this episode.Mitch has finally found an electric car that he likes, and the other guys hate it; the Honda Urban EV.We then talk about the Bugatti Chiron Sport, which eventuates into a debate as to what should be considered a 'supercar' and what should be considered a 'sports car'.Performax, a right hand drive conversion company, will be bringing the Ford F-250 Tuscany Black Ops to Australia. The price for which is $199,000 AUD.Then it's Joel's Motorcycle Minute, where he is given 1 minute to talk about his favourite topic; motorcycles. We then play 'What about this car', and this week it's the 2003 Volkswagen Beetle, which Matt concedes that he cannot put a positive spin on.Mitch then talks about Peugeot, their acquisition of Opel from General Motors, and a

Thursday 8th March 2018. Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow. EV TYRE TECH The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show has been dominated by headlines of the best to electrified vehicles, but Goodyear didn't want to miss out. They used the show to debut their Efficient Grip Performance with Electric Drive Technology tyre which, apart from being a bit of a mouthful, is designed for the new breed of electric vehicles. According to Goodyear, regular old tyres you'd get on an ICE car can wear up to 30% faster when fitted to an electric vehicles because in EVs we have all the torques. Cars like the BMW i3 already come with custom tyres mainly because they thinner to have less rolling resistance. And it's not just the next generation of batteries which will give us longer range, it's the rubber too. And finally there's the noise issue. For anyone who has had gone into an ICE car after being in an EV you find yourself shouting because they're so loud, well the new Goodyear's are ultra quiet too to match the cars. The say the custom tread design prevents sound waves from entering the grooves, which in turn reduces cabin noise. Also in Geneva Goodyear showed the Oxygene concept tire. The concept has a unique structure that features living moss growing within the sidewall. This open structure and the tire’s smart tread design absorb and circulate moisture and water from the road surface, allowing photosynthesis to occur and therefore releasing oxygen into the air. OK then http://www.greencarcongress.com/2018/03/20180307-goodyear.html   RIMAC C UNDERSCORE TWO  The Rimac Concept One is a beast and, when it's not being set on fire by The Grand Tour, is one of the best examples of how to make an electric hypercar. Well now we've seen the Rimac C_Two at the Geneva Motor Show. They teased us with it last month but now, in the flesh, it takes your breath away. First, let's get speccy. The specs are: 4 electric motors, 1,914bhp, 0-60 in just 1.85 seconds and a top speed of 258 mph. And get this, the front two motors have one gear whilst the rear motors have two gears. What kind of witchcraft is this? The 0-184 mph stat, which is something I look for in every car I buy, is a rather lazy 11.8 seconds. Only 150 of them will be made which is disappointing because I'm sure we were all ready to sell the house, put the dog on eBay and the cat on Craigslist just to raise the cash. The battery is 120kWh, liquid cooled, which is good for 400miles unless you stamp on the electron pedal. They've also built it with Level 4 autonomous driving so, in theory, you could buy one of the greatest driving machines ever made and have it do all the fun bits. Although if you use self driving in places where it’s not legal, like here in the UK, the police will probably pull you over and send you to jail forever with nothing by memories of the time you drive a Rimac. https://www.autoblog.com/2018/03/06/rimac-c_two-electric-hypercar-almost-2-000-horsepower/   RENAULT ZOE GETS MORE MUSCLE  Car Magazine in the posted some wonderful pics of the Geneva Motor Show which I urge you to check out. Along with supercars and luxury hybrids was the new and very purple Renault Zoe ZE40 R110. The R110 moniker is a reference to the 107bhp motor which is newly upgraded to 80kw and, whilst it doesn't provide much more of a gut punch when you pull away from the light, will dramatically improve the 50-70 time and motorway driving. Oh and it's purple. So very very purple. The press pics a while ago were nice but seeing it in the flesh, it's ALL the purple. The new Zoe will also come with Android Auto and third party apps can be used including Waze, Skype and Messenger. No word on whether the charging will be any faster. Months ago on InsideEVs i read an article about future Zoe's coming with CCS socket and ability to handle up to 150kW charging. With a 40kWh battery to top up, that would be nice, but I can't find anything either way. I'm guessing not. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/renault/new-renault-zoe-2018-uk-price-specs-performance-interior/   OUTLANDER GETS A POLISH The Mitsubishi Outlander is the outrageously popular plug in hybrid which just keeps on selling in Europe. The updated version was shown at Geneva which is now cleaner, more efficient, smoother and with a more powerful motor. I don't know much about combustion engines, shock horror, but it moves from an Otto cycle to an Atkinson cycle petrol 2.4 litre unit. The important electric bits all get a bit of spit and polish with more power from the inverter, the motor, 15% battery capacity and a higher rate to discharge that power. Altogether a nice set of improvements.  https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/mitsubishi/mitsubishi-outlander-phev-my2019-news-info-tech-spec-pictures-prices/   TOYOTA OFFER AURIS WITH TWO HYBRID OPTIONS So you may know I have a love/hate relationship with Toyota. They were early with electrification and have sold a bazillion cars with a battery in, but just recently they’ve decided to throw shade at plug in cars to advance their own market lead on soft hybrids. Come on Toyota let’s all move forward to together without you starting a fight against owners of plugins and pure electric vehicles. However I do love them for cars like the Auris which sell like hotcakes, and Geneva showed up the third generation which…fanfare please…won’t have a diesel option. Instead there will be two petrol-electric versions. I love you Toyota. However no chance of a third option of a pure electric. I hate you Toyota. Not really. https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/toyota/new-toyota-auris-uk-price-specs-sale-date-hybrid-engines-interior-mpg/   AUDI E-TRON MOVES FROM CONCEPT TO PROTOTYPE Audi were at Geneva with the e-tron. Not so much a concept but a protoype these days. How miffed do you think they are that the Jaguar I-PACE is taking orders whilst they're not ready yet? Journalists have been in one, although not driving one, which is what Jag were doing last December, which was three months away from launch. However all I can get from Audi is that the e-tron will start production before the end of this year. Same as the I-PACE it's compatible with rapid chargers up to 150kW. Same as the I-PACE real-world driving range of 300 miles is the claim. If only idiots like me would stop comparing it to the Jaguar which, did i mention, you can currently buy. https://www.carthrottle.com/post/the-audi-e-tron-laughs-in-the-face-of-range-anxiety/?utm_source=carthrottle-rssfeed&utm_medium=rss   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it.
