In this episode of Everybody in the Pool, Molly Wood speaks with Tiya Gordon, co-founder of It's Electric, a company focused on overcoming the challenges of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in urban areas. They delve into the barriers to EV adoption, emphasizing the lack of accessible charging options for city dwellers without private parking. It's Electric proposes a novel solution by installing small, bollard-style chargers powered by adjacent buildings, avoiding the need for extensive infrastructure and utility coordination. This approach not only promises to expand EV charging access in densely populated areas but also offers building owners a revenue-sharing model, turning every participating building into a potential charging station. The goal: make it easy to transition to electric vehicles no matter where you live.RESOURCES & LINKSIt's Electric: https://www.itselectric.us/All episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member and get an ad-free version of the podcast: https://plus.acast.com/s/everybody-in-the-poolPlease subscribe and tell your friends about EITP! Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 1st March 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER it’s ANTHONY CARROLL from Seattle, and thank you CHARLES HALL for increasing your support.   More on the Tesla news from Tom Randall at Bloomberg: "The top-line performance Model 3 price declined to $58,000 from $60,900. That’s $20,000 cheaper than when it was first released last year. It’s also a bit quicker, going from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds and having a top speed of 162 mph. Musk told reporters that making these final price cuts has been “excruciating,” and there will be no future price reductions to the Model 3. He declined to answer a question about the base model’s profitability. Tesla also reintroduced a lower-priced Model S sedan, which now starts at $79,000 with 270 miles of range. There’s also a long-range version starting at $83,000 with a 335-mile range, and a performance version starting at $99,000."   NISSAN REVEALS U.S. PRICING FOR LEAF E-PLUS: COSTS MORE THAN MODEL 3 "Nissan has just revealed U.S. pricing for the 62-kWh version of the LEAF. Unfortunately, pricing seems a bit too high following yesterday’s $35,000 Tesla Model 3 announcement." says Eric Loveday for InsideEVs: "There’s a lot to like with this new LEAF. Its 62-kWh battery provides a range of up to 226 miles. Had it not been for Tesla shocking the world last night with the Model 3 base price announcement, we’d be rather excited for the LEAF. However, all versions of the LEAF e-Plus check in at a higher price than $35,000. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the 2019 Nissan LEAF PLUS are: LEAF S PLUS $36,550 USD, LEAF SV PLUS $38,510 USD, LEAF SL PLUS $42,550 USD"   Inside EVs Forum user Bloggin: "$35k gets you the standard Model 3, but who wants a Tesla without Autopilot?? Add the $3k and it’s $38k. Want a color other than black and now it’s $39,500. Want wheels other than black, now it’s $41k and well equipped and still below the Leaf SL at $42,550." And user Brian: "Leaf still qualifies for the full tax credit whereas Tesla only gets half. In four more months, Tesla will only get a fourth of the credit. By the time the Leaf loses the credit, Nissan will have put cash on the hood. So the e-Plus will always cost less than even a base Model 3."   https://insideevs.com/nissan-u-s-pricing-leaf-e-plus/   PEUGEOT BRINGS FULLY ELECTRIC STAND TO GENEVA PEUGEOT will be showcasing its new plans for an electric future at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show, unveiling the all-new 100% electric PEUGEOT e-208 alongside the all-new PEUGEOT 208 petrol and diesel variants and hybrid 508 PEUGEOT SPORT ENGINEERED Concept. PEUGEOT will be unveiling the all-new PEUGEOT 208 model, which will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel powertrains along with a zero emission all-electric derivative, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208. Powered by a 100 kW motor, the all-new PEUGEOT e-208 will be the first electric model available from PEUGEOT’s new electric range. The 5-door hatchback features a 50kWh battery, positioned under the floor to maintain interior space, which provides a range of up to 211 miles (WLTP) from a full charge. The all-new PEUGEOT e-208 comes with three driving modes: Eco, to optimise range, Normal, tuned for comfort, and Sport, which puts the emphasis on performance. Customers can choose from a range of charging methods for the all-new PEUGEOT e-208, including 100 kW rapid charging, capable of 80% charge in 30 minutes.   http://www.peugeotpress.co.uk/releases/1726   AUDI STAND AT GENEVA WILL BE EXCLUSIVELY ELECTRICELECTRIC/HYBRID "The Audi stand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show will be exclusively occupied by electrically powered models, including the world premiere of the Audi Q4 e-tron concept and the European presentation of the Audi e-tron GT concept." according to Robin Whitlock for Renewable Energy Magazine: "In all, a total of four all-electric cars will headline for the brand, all of which will have been rolled out in series production form by the end of 2020. In addition four new plug-in hybrid models will also make their debuts, and the world of Formula E racing will be represented by the latest Audi e-tron FE05 racing car. Deliveries of the Audi e-tron, the first member of this new quartet of electric vehicles, are set to begin soon. The series-production version of its coupé equivalent, the Audi e-tron Sportback, will be introduced later in 2019. Another electric car – the Audi Q2 L e-tron - will be presented in a few weeks in China and will reach its first customers in that market in 2019. Two further series-production debuts will then follow in 2020: the Audi e-tron GT and Audi Q4 e-tron. Concept cars on the stand in Geneva provide a look at these two future models."   https://www.renewableenergymagazine.com/electric_hybrid_vehicles/audi-stand-at-geneva-will-be-exclusively-20190228   SEAT SHOWS VW MEB-BASED EL-BORN EV IN GENEVA "We've already seen spy photos of the production version of Volkswagen's new Golf-sized fully electric car, alternatively referred to as the I.D. or the Neo. As an intent to show that the MEB platform underpinning the Volkswagen will be utilized on other Volkswagen group cars, Seat, the Spanish carmaker, has released images of its own take on the MEB architecture." reports Autoblog: "Volkswagen will bring the I.D. electric hatchback to market first, instead of using Seat to test the waters. But the Seat is hardly a second banana, as its figures are convincing enough: the 62-kWh battery pack gives it a range of 260 miles (on the WLTP cycle), and its 204-horsepower electric powertrain takes it to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. With 100-kW DC charging, the battery reaches 80-percent capacity in 47 minutes. The VW version's production is slated to begin in November 2019."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/01/seat-el-born-ev-vw-meb-geneva/#slide-7533531   JAGUAR I-PACE NAMED UK CAR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019 The Jaguar I-PACE has emerged victorious at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2019, after a closely fought battle with three other manufacturers. Having been named the Best Executive car when the category winners were announced in February, the Jaguar was pitted against the 11 other triumphant new cars to fight it out for the top honour. The UK Car of the Year Awards judges were quick to praise the attributes of Jaguar’s first electric vehicle. TV presenter Jonny Smith said: “Few traditional manufacturers can match the I-PACE for ground-up groundbreaking design and tech. A wonderful combo of unique design, spirited driving behaviour and useful EV range/rapid charge capability.”   WHY HONDA BOSSES WEREN'T CONVINCED ABOUT THE E PROTOTYPE "The project manager of the Honda e prototype has admitted that the development team had to overcome opposition from company management before the car was confirmed for production." says Autocar: "The retro-styled electric-powered machine, whose styling closely resembles that of the Urban EV prototype, is a compact city car with a range of around 125 miles. Kohei Hitomi said Honda management was not initially convinced by the car's styling, small size and limited range. " He said: "“The positive feedback for the Urban EV concept car was certainly a breakthrough to convince internally that a small-size EV would make sense and be appreciated. I also tried to convince people that an EV is meant to be used in urban conditions, [where] the [small] size of the car is the most important aspect. That's where it makes most sense. From that perspective, the small size is the most important aspect, so that was how we tried to convince people. The concept helped the production car to get approval, and the production car helped the concept to look like what it looked like."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/why-honda-bosses-werent-convinced-about-e-prototype   KIA TO DISPLAY UPGRADED HYBRID NIRO MODELS AT GENEVA MOTOR SHOW "Kia has announced that refreshed versions of the Niro Hybrid and Plug-In Hybrid will be make their public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Both models now come with an exterior design in-line with the all-electric e-Niro, an improved interior finish and new tech features." says Jack Healy for CarKeys: "The South Korean marque has given the Niro hybrid models new front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED rear lights and new alloy wheel options. Inside, Kia has made significant tech upgrades in the form of the optional 10.25-inch widescreen touchscreen and seven-inch instrument cluster display, which can be fitted instead of the standard eight-inch infotainment screen and 4.2-inch instrument panel. Both versions of the Niro use a 1.6-litre petrol engine that is teamed with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The Hybrid pairs the combustion engine with a 1.56kWh lithium-ion battery pack, while the PHEV comes with an 8.9kWh unit."   https://www.carkeys.co.uk/news/kia-to-display-upgraded-hybrid-niro-models-at-geneva-motor-show   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   VOLKSWAGEN'S ELECTRIFY AMERICA BUYS TESLA DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS Reuters: "Volkswagen AG unit Electrify America said on Monday it will install Tesla Inc battery storage packs at more than 100 charging stations across the United States to keep costs down for drivers charging electric vehicles. Tesla Powerpack battery systems draw power from the grid during off-peak hours and store it for use during peak hours to avoid or reduce demand charges. Electrify America will install most of its battery packs in areas of the United States where there is a higher concentration of electric vehicle owners, particularly on the West Coast and the Northeast."   Bloomberg: "The 210-kilowatt battery systems will each have about 350 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and a Tesla spokesman declined to comment.   TechCrunch: "The company will begin the next phase of installations this summer. Electrify America’s bet on Tesla battery systems illustrates the deep need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is low cost, easy to access and as fast as possible. It’s not enough to simply dot highways and urban areas with public chargers. The deal also represents a small, yet possibly fruitful area for Tesla as it tries to grow its energy storage business."   Inverse: "Tesla develops the Powerpack for use with renewable energy sources like wind and solar, enabling buyers to store power and distribute when needed. The firm’s biggest installation to date is the 100-megawatt facility in Hornsdale, South Australia, used to help the renewables-dependent state avoid blackouts. Other consumers include the Manchester Science Park, using the batteries to create an “energy island,” and the Netherlands’ LomboXNet charging facility that uses solar energy to power electric cars."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-electrifyamerica-tesla/volkswagens-electrify-america-buys-tesla-devices-for-ev-charging-stations-idUSKCN1PT1NK   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-04/volkswagen-to-use-tesla-batteries-at-u-s-car-charging-stations   https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/04/vws-electrify-america-will-use-tesla-battery-packs-to-lower-charging-costs/   https://www.inverse.com/article/53004-volkswagen-s-electrify-america-to-install-hundreds-of-new-tesla-powerpacks   TESLA BUYING MAXWELL, COULD SIGNAL MOVE TO SOLID STATE BATTERY "Tesla is buying up Maxwell Technologies. In a deal expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2019, the California automaker has offered $4.75 per share for the company. That’s a healthy 55-percent increase above the energy storage technology company’s share price of $3.07 at Friday’s market closing. The transaction is said to take the form of a stock swap and received unanimous approval from the Maxwell board." reports Domenick at InsideEVs: "Maxwell is mostly known for its ultracapacitors, which are used by other automakers. Indeed, Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely partnered with the firm to use the energy storage devices in five of its hybrid products. But does that mean Tesla has picked them up for that particular technology? Maybe, but it should be noted that Maxwell, which has a footprint in Germany, South Korea, China, as well as the United States, has other tech that makes it valuable." Tesla told Electrek: "“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Electrek said: "The automaker might be more interested with Maxwell’s dry electrode technology that they have been hyping recently. Maxwell claims that its electrode enables an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg in current demonstration cells and they see a path to over 500 Wh/kg."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-buys-maxwell-technologies-solid-state/   https://electrek.co/2019/02/04/tesla-acquires-ultracapacitor-battery-manufacturer/   PANASONIC CUTS PROFIT OUTLOOK ON SLOWING CHINA DEMAND; TESLA BUSINESS A BRIGHT SPOT "Japan’s Panasonic Corp cut its annual profit outlook after disappointing quarterly earnings it blamed on a slowing Chinese economy hit by a trade war with the United States that hurt demand for auto components and factory equipment." reports Reuters: "China’s shrinking car market has crimped demand for automotive components, Panasonic said, while sales have also dropped for electronic devices used in air conditioners. The energy division, which includes its battery business with U.S. electric car maker Tesla Inc, provided some good news in a bleak quarter, posting its first operating profit in three quarters."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-panasonic-results/panasonic-cuts-profit-outlook-on-slowing-china-demand-tesla-business-a-bright-spot-idUSKCN1PT0CZ   8% PLUG-IN ELECTRIC VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN CHINA! From Jose Pontes at CleanTechnica "After a 3 month streak of record-breaking sales, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in December just kept on pushing forward. China registered over 180,000 PEVs in December, making it the 4th record month in a row and achieving 70% year-over-year (YoY) growth. That meant that 2018 sales ended north of the 1 million units mark. Yes, over 1 million PEVs in one year. And to think that 2017 was the first year that plug-ins reached 1 million sales globally. The PEV market share hit yet another all-time best, ending the month with 8% share. The 2018 PEV market share ended at a record 4.2% share, double the share of 2017."   https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/8-plug-in-electric-vehicle-market-share-in-china/   2020 PEUGEOT 208 EV SPIED COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Following the reveal of the all-new Clio, Groupe PSA is feeling the pressure from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for new, world-class products. The French part of the alliance won’t have it easy once Peugeot comes out with the all-new 208, which shares the CMP with the Opel Corsa." according to AutoEvolution: "Spied cold-weather testing in Scandinavia, the Peugeot looks similar to internal combustion-engined test mules. Styling is inspired from the 508, probably the coolest-looking sedan in the segment. The camera integrated into the rearview mirror enables Level 2 autonomous driving functions. By 2025, the French automaker plans to electrify 100 percent of its lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall."   https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-peugeot-208-ev-spied-cold-weather-testing-132148.html   MOBILE METERING: HONDA BUYS INTO UBITRICITY "Honda has acquired a significant stake in the Berlin-based company Ubitricity as part of a new financing round. The Japanese automobile manufacturer may have far-reaching plans with Ubitricity’s mobile metering technology." says an Electrive report: "electrive was able to glean the information about Honda’s participation in the Berlin-based company specializing in mobile electricity meters that for example turn street lamps into charging posts. Now a short announcement from deutsche-startups.de (based on the changes in the commercial register) confirms the Japanese manufacturer’s investment.Honda’s first fully electric model for the European market, the Urban EV, will probably go on sale in 2020. However, a near-series version will be on display at the Geneva Motor Show in March, and the production model will celebrate its premiere at the IAA in September."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/02/02/mobile-metering-honda-buys-into-ubitricity/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Can You Help Me Fight The Fossils? Read More About Patreon here EVne.ws/patreon   Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 23rd January 2019. And welcome to the party our newest member of the gang – and Producer of the show on Patreon - EDUARD PERTÍÑEZ   WHAT CAR? NAMES KIA-ENIRO AS 'CAR OF THE YEAR'   One of the curiosities of any car of the year award is how forward looking they are, and so yes it's amusing that a car which has delivered less than 1,000 in Europe can officially be the best car. But let's not understate the importance of a major magazine putting an electric car top of the pile.   So I'll start with the big one, the overall car of the. The Kia e-Niro.   As the editor Steve Huntingford says: "there are almost 4000 variations of around 400 cars listed in the data section at the back of this magazine, but after 12 months of testing we've whittled them down to the best in each class, with one of those standing out above all others as our 2019 Car Of The Year".   So why did it win? They said: "The BMW 3 SERIES would have made a worthy overall winner, having overcome a former Car of the Year to take class honours, while the Citroën Berlingo and Cupra Ateca were also strong contenders. However, those cars have had the misfortune to be launched in the same year as Kia’s game-changing e-Niro. Put simply, the e-Niro beats its rivals via knockout rather than on points, because it’s the first sensibly priced electric car that can fit into most people’s lives. Its huge real-world range helps, allowing you to get to where you’re going without any fear that you’ll end up stranded by the roadside. But it also makes a very practical family car, comes loaded with luxuries and strikes just the right balance of comfort and composure.  In short, the Kia e-Niro is a stunning achievement."   Winner - Less Than £30,000 Renault Zoe: "Our 2017 ELECTRIC Car of the Year remains a compelling proposition two years on – and that’s some achievement, given the pace at which things are moving in this class. Chief among the Renault Zoe’s appeal is still its low price. But unlike other sub-£25k pure electric options, such as the Smart Fortwo EQ, you don’t have to put up with a feeble range. In fact, in our Real Range tests, the Zoe outperformed many much pricier options by managing 146 miles on a full charge. You can opt to buy the Zoe outright (that’s the ‘i’ model), but we reckon you’re better off buying just the car and leasing the battery from Renault. Why? Well, you’ll pay a much smaller up-front cost, and you’ll also benefit from a lifetime battery warranty, so you won’t need to worry about the potential of a huge bill in the future if the car’s range starts to tail off due to battery degradation.  We’d go for the R110 model over the Q90 version for three reasons: it’s a bit cheaper and faster, plus you get a slightly longer range. The only downside is it’ll take you 1hr 40min to recharge from 0-80% via a 43kW rapid charger; the Q90 can manage that in 1hr 5min."   Winner More THan £60,000 - Jaguar I-PACE EV400 S: "Tesla has made this price point its own over the past five years, so it’s a measure of Jaguar’s achievement that it has managed to topple the American brand at the first time of trying. The Jaguar I-Pace has all the ingredients you’d expect from a £64,000 Jaguar – and more. It’s fantastic to drive, unnervingly quick (0-60mph takes 4.5sec) and has an interior that’s far more impressive to look at and touch than those in Jaguar’s regular models. It also delivers a better real-world range than Tesla’s Model S 75D and is cheaper to buy. If you want your I-Pace dripping with luxuries (and we wouldn’t blame you), SE or even HSE trim is worth a look, but entry-level S trim makes the most sense. You don’t need to bother with optional air suspension, although you’ll probably want to pick a couple of creature comforts from the options list. Yes, it’s still pricey, and yes, it’s a shame there’s no Tesla-style 120kW Supercharger network to recharge your I-Pace in 30-odd minutes. But it is compatible with the new 100kW charging points that are just starting to appear, so an 80% charge within 45 minutes will soon be possible."   Winner Best Hybrid - Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Winner Plug In Hybrid = Volvo XC90 T8   Winner What Car? Reader Award 2019 - "Judging by the crowds that packed Honda’s stand at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show, the Urban EV was a popular car from its very first outing – so popular, in fact, that Honda confirmed a production version of the concept before the dust had even settled. What Car? readers clearly can’t get enough of it, either, because the Urban EV garnered almost eight times as many votes as our second-placed car. Put simply, it’s by far the car you’re most excited about seeing in 2019. And so you should be, because the Urban EV is shaping up to be a true game-changer for Honda. It’s the brand’s first electric car to be sold in Europe, and with it being shorter than its Jazz stablemate yet potentially even more spacious inside, as well as having an electric range of around 155 miles, it will be ideally suited to city streets.  There’s a large digital screen for the instruments and infotainment system, plus smaller screens that show feeds from two cameras mounted on the car’s exterior in place of door mirrors."   DAIMLER ADD BATTERY FACTORY IN POLAND In the course of the electric initiative Mercedes-Benz Cars will build a battery factory at the polish site in Jawor and thus extend the global battery production network of up to nine factories. Markus Schäfer, Member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars: "“We will electrify the complete portfolio until 2022 and will be able to offer in each segment various electrified alternatives to our customers. This includes more than ten pure electric vehicles. We will produce batteries on our own, what we consider a significant success factor in the era of electric mobility. After the production of high-tech engines, we will establish additional future technology in Poland. The battery factory in Jawor is the second largest investment at this new Mercedes-Benz site.” With the construction of a battery factory on the existing ground at the site approximately 300 new jobs will be created. The battery assembly will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies. The series production of batteries for vehicles of the product and technology brand EQ is slated at the beginning of the next decade. They say: "Daimler is buying the cells on the world market and is instructing the suppliers to produce based on special specifications. In this way, the company is securing itself the best possible technology. With the purchase of battery cells for more than 20 billion euros, the company is establishing the preconditions for the consistent change towards an electrical future"   https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/New-site-in-the-global-battery-production-network-Mercedes-Benz-Cars-to-build-battery-factory-in-Jawor-Poland.xhtml   AUDI PROVIDING 50 E-TRON SHUTTLES AT WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM "Audi, as the exclusive shuttle partner for World Economic Forum in Davos since 1987, is providing a fleet of 50 e-tron electric cars for shuttle service. This year World Economic Forum takes place on January 22 to 25." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "The cars are powered by green electricity, through specially installed charging station with IONITY DC fast chargers and AC charging stands. On top of that is a 1.14 MWh/700 kW energy storage system in the form of mobile charging containers."   https://insideevs.com/audi-50-e-tron-shuttles-world-economic-forum-in-davos/   TESLA ROLLS BACK SUPERCHARGER PRICE INCREASES TO APPEASE OWNERS Staying with InsdieEVs: "According to Electrek’s analysis, Tesla hoped to increase average pricing for Supercharging by some 33 percent as a whole. This number is not specific to all markets, since the automaker planned to adjust pricing based on local electricity costs, as well as area-based demand." says Steven Loveday: "Some were even going so far as to do the math, which showed that Supercharging could end up costing nearly as much as gassing up in some markets. Additionally, charging at some other non-Tesla stations could be cheaper. The truth of the matter is if people cancel their reservations due to this adaptation, Tesla could be in a much more dire situation. So, the money gained by increasing rates could easily be lost due to decreasing sales. Obviously, Tesla took notice of the contention on social media and forums, likely crunched some numbers, and decided that this plan is not going to work. Less than a week later, the automaker decided to dial back the price hike by some 10 percent worldwide."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-rolls-back-supercharger-price-increases/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Friday 25th May 2018. A couple of quick headlines. Sources say the Model 3 bottleneck of batteries being fitted into chassis is finally sorted, and the rate of 500 per day will soon be increasing to 5000 per week on target for the end of Q2. Apple have signed a deal with VW for their driverless car tech – but were they spurned by others such as BMW, Merc and Tesla? The Nissan LEAF was Western Europes top seller for pure BEV action in the first 4 months of the year, with the LEAF selling 11,200 ahead of the Renault Zoe on 10,700. That’s a car which largely didn’t ship proper numbers until the start of March! In the UK the future of the Plug In Car Grant has been uncertain, but it has been confirmed until at least October 2018 and in some form until 2020. £4,500 off Cat 1 cars,  £8,000 off EV vans. PS  - I know not everyone will get this, but happy GDPR day.     PORSCHE ALLEGEDLY PREPPING NOT ONE, BUT TWO 911 PLUG-IN HYBRIDS Yesterday we talked about Audi waiting to make a supercar until solid state batteries were ready. Well it's not holding back their sisters and brothers are Porsche, although maybe electrons aren't ready yet for their hardcore GT2 and GT3. Chris Bruce, Editor of Motor1 says we could get not one but TWO Porsche 911s: "A new rumor indicates that there could be two of them in the future lineup, including one at the very top of the range with performance on par with the 911 Turbo" That's based on an unnamed source talking to Autocar. "The standard 911 plug-in hybrid would reportedly sit a step above the base Carrera. The electrification tech would be similar to the new Cayenne E-Hybrid, according to this anonymous source. This means a hybrid module with an electric motor would be between the engine and transmission. It would be able to work together with the internal combustion engine to provide an extra boost or power the vehicle exclusively for emissions-free motoring." Of course they have plenty of knowledge they're building up from the Mission E. There's more in the link on the show notes and have your say on the InsideEVs forum.   https://www.motor1.com/news/242984/porsche-911-phev-models-rumor/   HONDA FIT BASED EV IS REPORTEDLY IN THE WORKS Honda has been criticized for not fully jumping into the EV segment until recently with the introduction of the Clarity lineup and Accord and Insight hybrids" says Torque Report based on an original article by Electrek: "While Honda did introduce a Fit EV back in 2012, that model only lasted a few years, but now Honda is reportedly working on a new Fit based electric car." China's biggest battery builder CATL are reportedly tapped up to produce it: "The two companies will develop the car based on Honda’s Fit mini vehicle. The goal is to create an affordable electric car priced at slightly more than 2 million yen ($18,000) equipped with a small battery and having a relatively short range of 300km (186 miles) on a single charge.” Torque Report says: "Honda has yet to make any official announcements about a new Fit based EV, but has announced that it will introduce a new electric car in Europe next year that’s based on the Urban EV concept."   https://www.thetorquereport.com/honda/honda-fit-based-ev-is-reportedly-in-the-works/   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 21st March 2018.   NEWS IN BRIEF First up some headlines. The Tesla Semi prototypes are continuing their real-world tour of the United States. The silver one has just been spotted at the Dallas, TX service centre. Where will it turn up next? The New York Times says: Prosecutors in Munich searched BMW’s headquarters on Tuesday as part of their continuing investigation into an emissions-cheating scandal. Munich prosecutors said in a statementthat they were investigating whether the software in some BMW diesel models functioned like so-called defeat devices”. BMW said in a statement: “In the course of internal testing, the BMW Group realized that a correctly developed software module had been allocated in error to models for which it was not suited,” Nissan LEAF sales are closing in on 10,000 per month and 100,000 yearly if you were to do a crude multiplication by 12. February numbers are looking strong with almost 4,000 in Japan and Europe each, coming in at 6.5% of all Nissans sold in Europe. Add in almost 1,000 more in the US that’s heading towards 10,000 in February alone. If Tesla can’t sort their issues, it could be the Model 3 in 2018, which would have been unthinkable last year. I’m still banking on Tesla getting to 5,000 cars a week from July so that would push Model 3 way in front. Playing devils advocate, you could say Nissan has three factories, Japan UK and US, with established supply chains and experience, so 3,000 per factory in a month doesn’t blow your socks off. In the UK the Plug In Car Grant of £4,500 off the price of a new BEV STILL officially ends in 10 days time, with the government saying something will continue from April onwards. This is just embarrassing now. Next week will see a panel discussion on whether California should ban all combustion cars from 2040. It’s being chaired by the GreenBiz and Verge writer Katie Fehrenbacher, and she’s asking for your opinion if you’re a Californian podcast listener – send your thoughts to katie@greenbiz.com Hyundai IONIQ pure Bev sales were down in February, with 1,531 sold worldwide. It’s hard to work out why, demand is pretty high for it judging by anecdotal evidence. They could be building slowly, or deliberately holding back because there’s a long range IONIQ BEV coming before the end of 2018. Or maybe there’s no conspiracy theory, and Hyundai are just busy, because the Kona deliveries are dues to start in their domestic market of South Korea in April. Pedro from Push EV’s published an article saying the current 40Kwh LEAF was a stop gap, which I thought was harsh, but he has good reasoning. Old cell chemistry, no thermal management, AESC now being an external battery supplier since Nissan sold it, all pointing towards a very conservative BMS which throttles rapid charging to be on the safe side. And today in my timeline I’ve seen two examples of new LEAF owners charging very slowly on rapids, when it’s only 2 or 3 degrees Celsius here right now. Rapid charging isn’t essential, look at the Zoe and how well it sells, but it’s something I’ll watch. And finally for news in brief, the Model 3 Owners Club tweeted a new option that has appeared in the Model 3 configurator. The 20” sport wheel and Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber is available for $4000 extra.   WILL YOU GO EV FOR EARTH HOUR? The WWF say: “climate change is the biggest future threat to people and nature around the world, especially in the polar regions. If we don’t up our action on climate change, we could lose almost 50% of species from the world’s most precious places by the end of this century.” That’s why they’re asking you to mark Earth Hour with a pledge to make your next car an EV. And if you own an electric car, why don’t you let a friend use it for a journey they would otherwise take in an ICE car during the earth hour? Get then insured for the day, and give them a taste of the power, silence and efficiency of an EV.   ELECTRIC CARS THE NEXT BIG THING According to Bo Bai, CEO of the private equity U.S.-China Green Fund, electric vehicles is the next big investment: "Solar technology has been there for a long time. China has gotten wholeheartedly into it. Reduced the cost to a ridiculous level right now to break even on many areas, many regions. Electric vehicles, it's similar. The technology has advanced to a certain stage with mass production and logistics management. The cost is reducing very substantially," He predicts a ripple effect that’s coming very soon, as price levels come down to a level that’s low enough.   WHEN DID THE EV REVOLUTION START? Last week Tesla celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the start of Roadster production. But when do you think the beginning of the modern era of electric cars was? According to CarBuzz, the Geneva Motor Show this month was the real start to the mainstream era of EVs. 12 new electric cars were showcased, not concepts or pretty sketches. These are production-ready cars from car companies a lot bigger that Tesla. Well, bigger in terms of how many cars they make, even if not the share price! The best news about the I-PACE is that production has started and models will soon be shipped around the world. The Audi e-tron is months away from production – or whatever I’m meant to call it. The most recent name seems to be the e-tron Quattro SUV, which highlights not only size and propulsion, but also because Audi are using e-tron for their next electric cars. So I must stop calling it just the Audi e-tron. Honda confirmed the Urban EV won’t be a million miles from the concept and the suicide doors will stay. My favourite, the Hyundai Kona, was showed off with it’s 64.5 kWh battery, LG Chem cells with thermal management so rapid charging should be OK, and we heard that from July the first 2,500 will be heading to Norway first. I would disagree that the VW VIZZION is coming soon, it’s didn’t have an interior and was basically four lovely seats from the IKEA catalogue and some very thick shagpile carpet. VW say it’s the future of motoring, I say the carpet looked nicer than the one in my bedroom.   TOSHIBA NEXT GEN BATTERY Toshiba recently unveiled a li-ion battery which they claim charges fully in just six minutes, delivering a 200-mile range on a full charge. Toshiba's next generation SCiB lithium ion battery replaces the conventional lithium titanium oxide anode with a titanium niobium oxide anode. The new battery maintains the longevity of the previous older configuration, promising a life cycle of 14 years, assuming a full charge and discharge cycle per day.    I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Wednesday 7th March 2018.   Coming up today, more manufacturers stop selling diesels in favour of hybrids whilst one very large one commits to diesel.  Plus more from today’s Geneva Motor Show like the Hyundai Kona which you and I will to on the show tomorrow.   BENTLEY LUXURY HYBRID But first of all something I teased at the start of the podcast yesterday, as it was being announced, was the first ever electrified Bentley. The Bentayga Hybrid will come with a 3.0 litre petrol engine combined with a plug in hybrid system capable of 31 miles of silent running. Bentley said this was the “worlds’ first luxury hybrid”. Let’s just give Land Rover a call and see if they would class their recent Range Rover Sport Plug In as either luxury or hybrid. I’m thinking they would. The Bentley can be selected to drive in EV mode, or the common Hold mode, should you be driving into one of the urban areas soon to ban or charge a levy for driving diesels, you can hold the charge and opt run on electrons when you need to. Charging is what you would expect for a battery around 10-15kWh, they said it would fully fast charge in 2hr 30mins, although nowhere could I find the size of the battery or the motor. The combined power from the electric motor means it should get 75g/km on the NEDC measurement here in Europe. A reminder that from later this year all cars will have to move to WLTP standard which is much more like real world driving, and is said to be far less flattering on those big engine luxury cars which have been adding small batteries to achieve theoretical low emissions. The Bentayga is coming in the second half of 2018. http://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/18987/bentley-gets-electrified-with-the-new-bentayga-hybrid https://www.carmagazine.co.uk/car-news/first-official-pictures/bentley/bentley-bentayga-hybrid-2018-suv-price-specs-and-release-date/ http://www.evo.co.uk/bentley/bentayga/20890/bentley-bentayga-phev-revealed-at-geneva-bentley-s-suv-goes-hybrid   HONDA AND TOYOTA NOT DOING THE DIESEL DANCE It has been a busy day of statements from car makers, any one of which would be headline news on another day, but the new kept on coming. First I heard that Honda announced they were cutting diesels from their model line ups. And then Toyota popped up in my news feed, as they said they would stop the sales of diesels in Europe and shift all their focus on electric hybrids, from this year. They said it was due to customer reaction and you can see why, with less than 10% of their fleet being diesels, they’re hardly making a sacrifice. However it will not only generate good publicity but add to the pain for other car makers who commit to diesel, and Toyota are said to be one of the only ones who might achieve the strict new EU rules. More on that later on the show. Toyota has sold over 400,000 hybrids in Europe and are committed to soft hybrids rather than plug in. They aren’t expected to market pure BEV’s until at least 2020. In fact their recent TV ads featured charging stations covered in cobwebs, as they actively tried to take aim at those who want to plug in their cars, with campaigns for their luxury Lexus brand saying they charge themselves. Which sounds like you’re stretching the truth about as far as you can. They’re not magical, they just burn fossils https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Toyota-to-phase-out-diesel-cars-in-Europe-starting-this-year   HONDA CONCEPT TO BE MADE Next do you remember the Honda Urban EV Concept unveiled a few months back at the Frankfurt Motor Show? It’s the cirlcle-eyed, tech laden concept with two bench seats for passengers. And now today at Geneva, Honda confirmed “a production version” is coming. Speaking during Honda’s 2018 Geneva motor show press conference, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, Philip Ross confirmed the news, “A production version of this highly acclaimed concept will be introduced to Europe during late 2019, and in response to the positive feedback to this model, we expect to open order banks for the Urban EV during early 2019.” https://www.just-auto.com/news/geneva-show-honda-confirms-urban-ev-for-europe-in-2019_id181549.aspx   BMW ADD i4 TO THEIR ELECTRIC RANGE Talking of concepts which have been confirmed, BMW said in Geneva the concept they showed off in Frankfurt will be coming. It’s part of a line up of 25 full BEVs or electrified cars. The concept was, what BMW called, the future of e-mobility. Now it will be made in Munich as the i4. And then they noted the specs which, at concept stage, don’t mean too much to be honest. 0-62mph in 4secs, top speed 120mph, 373 miles ranges and a new battery system made of magical fairy dust. Really the specs don’t mean a thing apart from what sort of segment they might be aiming this at, plus add a little range for optimism. So this puts it in Model S territory. However there’s no date set, and all they say is their range will be complete by 2025. So really having a car which can do what a Tesla did 10 years before it, isn’t too much to boast about. I wonder sometimes if auto execs and their PR handlers know things like this before making these kind of statements. Tesla was so far ahead of its time and continues to innovate, with increasing autopilot sophistication and the Model 3 interior, it doesn’t blow me away to hear a BMW will match a Tesla by 2025. https://www.motor1.com/news/235082/bmw-i4-electric-vehicle-confirmed/   PORSCHE CROSSOVER INTO, ER, CROSSOVERS Onto a car which is here, almost. The Porsche Mission E will be here in 2019 and plans are well advanced, including the installation of 800-volt charging stations at all their dealerships in North America to make use of the 350kW charging in the Mission-E. Yesterday at Geneva Porsche showed off a new model called the Mission E Cross Turismo. This is a crossover utility vehicle, which has all-wheel drive, four doors and room for cargo. The specs mirror that of the Mission-E so 310 miles range with 250 miles added in just 15 minutes of charging time. Although a future model, Porsche says it’s road-ready as it’s built on the work they’ve already done. Given the price it will be up there with Tesla Model S and X territory so will have to be very special, from the pictures, it does look it. https://techcrunch.com/2018/03/06/porsches-mission-e-cross-turismo-is-the-ev-crossover-you-want/    ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA ELECTRICS Aston Martin confirmed at Geneva they’re bringing back their legendary Lagonda brand for all their future electric cars. CEO Andy Palmer explained: “We believe people associate luxury in their cars with a certain traditional and even old fashioned approach because, to date, that is all that’s been available to them. Lagonda exists to challenge that thinking and prove that being modern and luxurious are not mutually exclusive concepts.” So they’re going more the way of Tesla than Bentley, in that automation and pure electrification. Their aim is to work with solid state batteries, they think 400 miles range is the sweet spot and they want to find a way to use induction charging to top the battery in 15 minutes. If some of that sounds a little pie in the sky, it is, because Aston Martin don’t have the deep pockets of their rivals. so they’ll need a partner to achieve those ambitions. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1115581_aston-martin-to-make-lagonda-a-premium-ev-brand   VW CHIEF SAYS GOVERNMENTS NEED DIESEL And now, if you felt the room go a little cold, let’s finally get onto someone who made big headlines yesterday – Volkswagen CEO Matthias Mueller. The more I think about this statement the more I don’t think he would have wanted the press to pick up on one phrase, when English is his second language. However let’s see what he said to Bloomberg: “Diesel will see a renaissance in the not-too-distant future because people who drove diesels will realize that it was a very comfortable drive concept. Once the knowledge that diesels are eco-friendly turns up in people’s minds, then for me there’s no reason not to buy one.” “The rules of the game in the EU in relation to climate protection and emissions goals on CO2 are so challenging that governments cannot do without diesel,” he said. And this from a company which would have an extra $30billion in the bank were it not for Dieselgate. From that we’ve seen cities introduce diesel bans in the future, other makers run away from the fuel, and even in Germany they’re talking about bans. The problem comes from European Union regulations to cut carbon dioxide. CO2 was the focus of pollution many years ago and diesel at the time was seen at the answer, without the full dire consequences on public health realised from particulates and Nitrogen Oxides. The next target on the horizon is an EU rule that fleet emissions from all cars sold by each brand should be 95g of CO2 per km by 2021. Meeting that would be slightly easier with diesel, but since Dieselgate, public opinion has turned. Saying that, Mueller told reporters VW won’t miss those targets. Which doesn’t make sense – if VW can hit the targets, why the panic? Because these are hefty fines coming for those that miss the target. Diesel sales fell 19% in Germany last month, and in the UK last month were 35% down from 50% in 2014. Last October investment research house MSCI warned all carmakers apart from Toyota are at risk of being fined by the EU for missing targets https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-05/volkswagen-ceo-predicts-renaissance-for-embattled-diesel-cars https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-autoshow-geneva/diesel-collapse-gives-automakers-carbon-headache-idUKKCN1GI0QN?utm_source=applenews   WHILST THE UK GOVERNMENT SAYS THEY DON’T NEED DIESEL Finally, I don’t often read a government tweet, but this one caught my attention. In the UK a tax exemption for taxi drivers starts next month in April, to get an extra £1550 off a new electric cab. Zero emission taxis also have no road tax to pay. Each London diesel cab replied with an electric REX saves 7 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, and there are 75,000 on the roads. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond said: "This is a victory for the environment and new technologies, which I am determined to support as we build an economy fit for the future. Ensuring the air in our bustling towns and cities is free from pollution is part of our quest to become the first government to leave the environment in a better state than we found it. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/tax-break-to-help-black-cabs-go-green https://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/black-taxi-drivers-offered-1550-to-dump-diesel-a3782761.html?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter#link_time=1520338376   Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. GTI, and the 10th Anniversary edition of the Lexus RC-F. We briefly talk about the blue Stinger GT we checked out in a Kia dealership after the podcast last week, which neatly transitions into a tangent. We talk about Yokohama reviving their HF type D from the 1980's specifically for older vehicles with smaller wheels which are harder to find tyres for. We then discuss the possibility of the Nissan Titan being converted to RHD and may be sold in Australia. We play the fan favourite 'What About This Car', which suprisingly all agree is a cool car... Which spurs an argument about the Panda car craze. Then Joseph introduces a new topic, which should continue to be a fun one.Like us on
