For some who had been following The Fall since 'Live At The Witch Trials' and 'Dragnet', 1988's 'The Frenz Experiment' with its more polished and slightly commercial sound might have seemed to be a bit of a sellout. Not so for this week's guest, Manchester record shop co-owner and bass player (The Suncharms) Richard Farnell. Catching them live at a record shop in-store appearance while playing hooky during a school trip into London may have sealed the deal for him, but he contends there's more to this era of The Fall than the unlikely chart success of their covers of 'Victoria' and 'There's A Ghost In My House' might attest. Songs discussed in this episode: There's A Ghost In My House - The Fall; Time Will Tell - The Suncharms; Mr Pharmacist, Totally Wired, Rebellious Jukebox, Fol De Rol, Frenz, Carry Bag Man, Get A Hotel - The Fall; Victoria - The Kinks; All Day and All of the Night - The Stranglers; Victoria - The Fall; Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight - Spinal Tap; Athlete Cured, In These Times, The Steak Place, Bremen Nacht, Guest Informant, Oswald Defence Lawyer - The Fall; Distant Lights - The Suncharms
A DIFFERENT KIND OF TENSION – BUZZCOCKS with special guest, Paul Hanley. Buzzcocks' 1979 album, 'A Different Kind of Tension' may have been released the same year as ‘Singles Going Steady,' but it is a different shape of beast to ‘Singles.' For a start it was recorded intentionally as an album rather than cobbled together by a naive U.S. label in search of punk dollar. Track three is “You Say You Don't Love Me” which automatically rates the album a straight 10, but there are other objects d'interest up in this sweet, sweet bastard of a record. By this point, on their third studio album proper, Pete Shelley was firmly entrenched as the band's driving creative force—yet songs by Steve Diggle like “Sitting Round at Home” and “You Know You Can't Help It” are rough-hewn gems in the catalogue worth seeking out. For the most part, as for majority of their output, the songs are short, sharp, punk-pop shocks that electrify and energize—and while their formula may have been perceived by some as tired by this point, the band would continue on in various incarnations right up until the present day. Even now, with Shelley gone, Diggle has chosen to keep pushing Buzzcocks into the future. The eternal teenagers somehow continue their path, unswerving, and it's a beautiful thing to both reflect on and behold. With special guest PAUL HANLEY Man of letters and former Fall drummer, Paul Hanley has written a book on Buzzcocks called ‘Sixteen Again: How Pete Shelley & Buzzcocks Changed Manchester Music (And Me),' to give it its full title. The book mixes together biography, interview, critique and social history to create a full picture of the legendary Manchester group, equally beloved of fans of punk, post punk and indie. Route Publishing – who have also published Hanley's ‘Leave The Capital: A History Of Manchester Music In 13 Recordings' and the masterful ‘Have A Bleedin Guess: The Story Of Hex Enduction Hour' – have the following to say: "Paul Hanley's obsession with Buzzcocks peaked between the ages of 14 and 16, exactly the age when ‘favourite band' actually means something important. An essential part of the charm of Buzzcocks to him were their proximity and approachability." Paul Hanley is also one half of the drumming duo who power recent Q Album Of The Year, House Of All, and co-host of the Oh! Brother podcast with kin Steve Hanley, JASON BARNARD of Strange Brew podcasts was in the interviewer's chair. This podcast in association with Strange Brew podcasts. ELON KEEPS PROMISE TO LOWER MODEL S PRICE When Elon Musk tweeted that he was lowering the price of the Model S to $69,420, which also beats the new entry level Lucid Air by $500, i did wonder if he was half joking. But checking the design studio this morning i notice the change has happened on the US store. UK is still the same. What about Europe? There is now a $22,570 difference from Long Range to Performance. How much do you want an extra 8 mph top speed, and going down from 3.7 seconds 0-60 to 2.3 seconds? Is it worth Ludicrious Mode and Carbon Fibre spoiler? And Model X is unchanged - it's either $79,990 or $99,990. The new subsidy of 1,000 euros, which Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari announced, is intended specifically for the purchase of second-hand battery-electric cars." says electrive: "So far, the French government’s subsidy program only includes grants for new electric cars. The subsidies, which were increased in the course of the Corona crisis are to be reduced again from next year. A premium for used electric cars was first discussed in France in September as part of the large-scale package of measures to revive the economy." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/13/france-plans-e1000-subsidy-for-used-bevs/ MAGNA TAKING A STAKE IN FISKER "Fisker Inc, which is going public through a merger with a so-called blank check company, said on Thursday auto supplier Magna International will supply the vehicle platform and build the electric carmaker's Ocean SUV." says Autoblog: "As part of the deal, Magna will receive warrants to purchase a stake of up to 6% in Fisker. The company is worth about $3 billion, Fisker Chief Executive Henrik Fisker told Reuters. Magna's stake in Fisker is subject to hitting three engineering and production milestones through the planned start of production of the Ocean in November 2022, Henrik Fisker said. Fisker Inc said in August it had a tentative deal for Magna to build the SUV at its Graz, Austria, plant. The vehicle will have a starting price of $37,499." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/15/fisker-magna-financial-stake-will-build-ocean-suv/#slide-endcap VW'S ROBOT-BUILT ID.4 AND ID.BUZZ "Volkswagen has confirmed that it placed a massive order for robots to build the ID.4 electric SUV and ID.BUZZ electric minibus. Today, it reaffirmed that by announcing it placed a massive order of 2,200 industrial robots to be deployed at three different factories." says electrek: "VW launched the ID.4 last month, and it is already being produced in Germany, but VW is currently expanding its factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee to build the electric SUV starting in 2022." VW Says: "The Volkswagen brand has now ordered more than 1,400 robots from Japanese manufacturer FANUC for its production facilities at Chattanooga (USA) and Emden. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has ordered a further 800 robots for its Hanover plant from ABB of Switzerland. The robots are to be mainly used for body production and battery assembly. The three plants are currently being prepared for the production of electric cars using highly advanced facilities. From 2022, the ID.4 is to be produced at Chattanooga (USA) and Emden, while the model known under the show car name of ID. BUZZ is to roll off the production line at Hanover.” https://electrek.co/2020/10/15/vw-massive-robots-build-id4-suv-idbuzz-electric-minibus/ TESLA CHINA’S BASE MODEL Y TO START AT $41K "Recent estimates from securities firm Tianfeng Securities are pointing at something quite remarkable for Tesla’s ongoing ramp in China. As noted by the firm in a recently-released research report, Tesla’s strategy of passing its cost savings to customers could result in the Made-in-China Model Y starting at a very reasonable price of CN¥275,000 (about $41,000)." reports Teslarati: " the Made-in-China Model Y would be priced just about 9% higher than the locally-produced Model 3, whose Standard Range Plus variant now starts at CN¥249,900 (about $36,800). Apart from its insights about the Made-in-China Model Y’s starting price, the securities firm further estimated that the production rate of the all-electric crossover at Gigafactory Shanghai could be as high as 360,000 units per year, or about 30,000 per month." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-y-china-price-output-report/ ELECTRIFY AMERICA TRANSITIONS TO KWH-BASED PRICING IN FLORIDA AND VIRGINIA "Electrify America announced today that customers in Florida and Virginia will now pay by the amount of energy used to charge their vehicle, instead of paying by the amount of time they use the charging equipment." writes Tom Moloughney: "By adding Florida and Virginia to the list of states where the network utilizes its new kWh-based pricing, Electrify America has now moved 25 states, plus the District of Columbia, off of its original time-based pricing system. " https://insideevs.com/news/449138/electrify-america-kwh-pricing-virginia-florida/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles EVGO TRIPLES FAST CHARGING NETWORK THROUGH THE DRIVE ELECTRIC VIRGINIA PROGRAM "Since September 2019, EVgo has deployed five new chargers each month in Virginia, totaling 24 fast charging site locations and 76 chargers, built under contract with the Department of Environmental Quality. EVgo’s fast charging network now covers the state’s key regions" This growth in public fast chargers builds on the success of EVgo’s existing portfolio of more than 800 station locations across the United States, the most of any U.S. public fast charging network. Vgo stations feature fast chargers capable of delivering 50-150kW charge rates to meet the variety of new EV models and battery technology coming in the market. AUDI & VOLKSWAGEN AMP UP THEIR PLUG-IN HYBRID OFFERINGS "In separate press releases, Audi and Volkswagen have announced two new plug-in hybrid variants for their largest SUV models — the Audi Q8 and Volkswagen Taureg. Make no mistake; both cars looks substantially different on the outside but they are virtually identical under the skin. How do we know that? Because both offer two powertrains — one with 376 total horsepower and the other with 456 horsepower. Both come with a 100 kW (134 hp) permanently excited (like a 17 year old high school junior) synchronous electric motor embedded in the inner workings of an 8 speed dual clutch transmission" says Steve Hanley at CleanTechnica: "Under the luggage compartment is a 17.8 kWh (gross) pouch cell battery that is capable of propelling the vehicles on battery power alone for up to 28 miles (WLTP) at speeds up to 83 mph, which means that for many people their new Audi or Volkswagen PHEV SUV can complete normal daily driving chores on electric power alone." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/10/14/audi-and-volkswagen-amp-up-their-plug-in-hybrid-offerings/ You can listen to all 907 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. LORDSTOWN MOTORS CHIEF SAYS NEW FACTORY COULD PRODUCE 600,000 ELECTRIC VEHICLES A YEAR "Lordstown Motors is using the manufacturing delay caused by the coronavirus to reconfigure the Lordstown assembly plant it bought from General Motors last year to build its Endurance electric pickups trucks. It expects to manufacture 30 pre-production trucks before the end of this year." writes Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "CEO Steve Burns, who previously founded Workhorse, says he expects to build 20,000 electric trucks in 2021 and will hire 600 workers to make that possible, but that is just the tip of his ambitions. The Lordstown factory could build 400,000 cars a year at its peak, but Burns tells the Detroit Free Press that because electric vehicles have many fewer parts and components, it should be possible to build 600,000 electric trucks and SUVs there a year. Burns likes to say the Endurance has only four moving parts — the wheels. They will have the truck’s electric motors embedded into them, the first production vehicle to use in-wheel motors pioneered by Elaphe. Starting at $52,500, the Endurance will have 600 horsepower on tap, a range of 250 miles, a towing capacity of 7,500 lbs, room for 5, AC outlets for power tools at remote locations, and the ability to recharge its battery to 95% in 30 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/05/25/lordstown-motors-chief-says-new-factory-could-600000-electric-vehicles-a-year/ BRITAIN'S LARGEST SOLAR FARM POISED TO BEGIN DEVELOPMENT IN KENT "Britain’s largest solar farm, capable of generating enough clean electricity to power 91,000 homes, is poised to receive the greenlight from ministers this week." according to The Guardian: "The subsidy-free renewables park is expected to reach a capacity of 350MW by installing 880,000 solar panels – some as tall as buses – across 364 hectares (900 acres) of farmland in the Kent countryside. The UK’s growing fleet of solar panels has produced record levels of clean electricity in recent weeks, reaching fresh highs of 9.68GW last month and helping the UK energy system to its longest stretch without coal-fired power since the Industrial Revolution. The renewables industry believes the UK’s solar power capacity could rise to 27GW by 2030 after the UK government dropped a block which prevented solar farms and onshore wind projects from competing in subsidy contract auctions." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/24/britains-largest-solar-farm-poised-to-begin-development-in-kent UK CHARGING PARTNERSHIP LIBERTY CHARGE MAKES DEBUT "The UK-based Liberty Global Ventures and Zouk Capital have announced a joint venture partnership named Liberty Charge. The partnership will roll out on-street charging points for electric vehicles in residential areas across the UK." reports electrive: "A partnerhship with Virgin Media supports Liberty Global’s efforts in the space of charging infrastructure, as the Virgin Media Park and Charge (VPACH) project aims to deploy 1,200 charging sockets across the country by early 2021." https://www.electrive.com/2020/05/23/uk-charging-partnership-liberty-charge-makes-debut/ BUYING A CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED EV MAKES A LOT OF SENSE "Choosing a certified pre-owned (CPO) car is one way to mitigate the risk of buying a used vehicle. The CPO system can also be a good way to buy used electric vehicles. Automaker-sponsored, dealership-administered CPO programs offer extended warranties for the electric powertrain components, which could provide some peace of mind for owners who are spending big money on an unfamiliar technology. Everything we say here about EVs applies to hybrids as well." says Car & Driver: "Most companies that build and sell electrified vehicles have a separate warranty to cover the battery and electric motor. The industry has mostly coalesced around an eight-year/100,000-mile warranty for new vehicles with EV powertrains, though of course there are overachievers: Hyundai offers a 10-year/100,000-mile warranty for its new hybrids and EVs.Nissan said in 2018 that Leaf batteries would last an estimated 10-12 years longer than the cars they power, and Tesla says it is working on a battery that will last a million miles. When’s the last time you saw a passenger car with that many miles on the clock?" https://www.caranddriver.com/shopping-advice/a32583041/buy-cpo-hybrid-ev/ TESLA LAUNCHES FALLOUT SHELTER IN-CAR VIDEO GAME AND MORE WITH NEW UPDATE "Tesla is starting to push a new software update that includes the video game Fallout Shelter, Tesla Theater improvements, and more." reports electrek: "Now we learn that Tesla is starting to deploy the video game in its vehicles as part of a new 2020.20 software update currently being pushed to early access owners. Last year, Tesla added Xbox controller support for its arcade game. You are going to need an Xbox controller with a USB cable. Update: Tesla just told us that Fallout Shelter currently doesn’t support an Xbox controller. Unlike Tesla’s racing game, which works with a controller, you can only use the touchscreen for Fallout Shelter." Tesla say: "Fallout Shelter puts you in control of a state-of-the-art underground Vault from Vault-Tec. Build the perfect Vault, keep your Dwellers happy, and protect them from the dangers of the Wasteland. With this release, you can now play, pause, and skip video playback with your steering wheel controls while using Theater Mode. As usual, Theater Mode is only available while your vehicle is in ‘PARK.’" https://electrek.co/2020/05/21/tesla-fallout-shelter-cars-update/ 400 MILES IN TESLA MODEL S RAVEN From the latest Bjorn Myland video: Model S LR Raven Dry 16 degrees Michelin PS4 245/45-19 Speed 90 km/h 144 Capacity 92,7kWh 644 Km / 400 miles TESLA BAKES IN MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE UPGRADE PACKAGE "Tesla has decided to bake in the Model 3 Performance’s Performance Upgrade Package (PUP) for each order of the premium all-electric sedan. With this, the electric car maker has taken yet another step towards streamlining its vehicle production, while doing away with vehicles that were dubbed by the community as “sleeper” Performance Model 3s. " says Teslarati: "The update to Tesla’s online configurator appears to have happened recently, considering that the order page last Sunday still had options to select the Performance Upgrade Package for every Model 3 Performance order. The PUP is a free option, and it includes 20” performance wheels, performance brakes, a carbon fiber spoiler, lowered suspension, aluminum allow pedals, Track Mode, and increased top speed from 145 mph to 162 mph. While the PUP was free, some buyers of the Model 3 Performance opt to forego the upgrade for the sake of more range" Range up from 299 to 322. 18" Aero wheels. The UK configurator has always been like that. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-performance-upgrade-package-update/ COULD TESLA REVEAL A 700-MILE MODEL 3? "With Tesla Battery Day reportedly around the corner now, the focus of late has been on the million-mile battery that Tesla may well reveal. While such a battery would surely be big news, what if Tesla has something else up its sleeve, like a mega energy-dense battery that will extend range significantly while at the same time dropping production costs? This would for certain be even bigger news than a battery that lasts a million miles." says Yahoo News: "Even today, the Model S goes 400 miles on a charge and that's with battery tech that in some ways dates back to 2012, so imagine what would happen with today's breakthrough battery tech in the Model S. One thing is for certain, all eyes will be on what Tesla reveals on Battery Day, which will likely occur as a two-part event with the first coming very soon:" https://uk.news.yahoo.com/could-tesla-reveal-700-mile-170000152.html QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS JAN from eMOBILITY NORWAY I think, instead of giving up, Dyson should have invited partners to the project or rewrite the scope. The result was not as first planed, especially the price was much too high for a big market. Probably the most considerable cost was the battery as the range was close to 1000km. That is four times more than needed for most users. That range tells me that they wanted to make a replacement of a fossil car, instead of creating a modern EV. What if Dyson had made the battery smaller to reduce the price? Or they could have made it modular, giving the customers the possibility to choose the size depending on the need and wallet. RAJEEV NARAYAN As great as it would have been to see the Dyson EV released, they probably made the right decision not to. At that price point it would have been a hard sell, as they lack the branding that Porsche or MB has. I hope, however, that they don’t give up. They could license the MEB platform, use existing battery tech from the likes of SKI or LG, that is more than good enough and come out with a compelling EV and acquire experience. Then, someday, if their solid state batteries pan out, who knows what they could bring to market. AJ TARQUINO, OHIO USA I’m sure there are hundreds of customers that would/could afford this vehicle. With improvements that are being made with range and longevity of the battery, shouldn’t this help to drive the cost down on the Dyson automobile and make it affordable for more people ?? Couldn’t Dyson spring off their expensive platform, like Tesla has, to make a lower cost production model that would/could draw the interest of the average buyer of EV customers? LEE BROWN, SCOTLAND Yes Dyson should have continued their research, they are pioneers in battery technology. All the associated costs with EV R&D would have come down in price over time and they could have then produced a smaller, more affordable EV. I’ve read they had quite a lost of grant money given to them by the UK Government - will he have to pay that back now? JOHN FRUHWIRTH I'm all for Elon's corporate mission statement which goes something like this.. "Accelerate the transition of transportation to renewable energy". As such, it does not make sense to only make EVs as expensive toys for the rich. If we are to make a significant progress in transitioning to a cleaner, greener planet then it is essential that EVs reach price parity with ICE vehicles. Not only personal vehicles but ALL commercial/industrial vehicles need to be converted to become BEVs. BRENTON POTTS I am very disappointed that Dyson cancelled their EV. I sure wouldn't be able to afford one but I reason that Tesla's first roadster was exclusively for affluent enthusiasts and look where they are now. I believe that the brains and design knowhow behind Dyson could have brought something really positive to the EV space that would eventually trickle down to something I could afford to dream about. 2 positive takeaways though, they released their progress so other EV makers can be inspired and James Dyson said he is not against other EV makers using his solid state batteries in their cars! JEFF MURRAY As far as Dyson goes, I think Tesla is a good example where they started out high priced and used that knowledge to be able to lower the prices in later generations. I think that a company just getting into the market is almost going to have to use that strategy, especially if they expect to have any kind of quality. Even if they made a good affordable product first, the low price may very well be seen as “cheap” as opposed to good value. That said, I highly doubt Dyson was in any “danger” of making an affordable product, given their prices on other products. PHILIP TRAUTMAN I was sad to see that the Dyson effort failed. From the outside it looked great. My wife and I could use an EV with that form factor (at a reasonable price.) However, at this point in the maturation of the EV market, I think the biggest challenge is perceived price. Most people around here (Southern Oregon) seem to think that only rich people can afford an EV. That needs to change, and more high-profile announcements of high-priced EVs isn’t going to help. Assuming people were paying attention to the Dyson news at all, I’m sure the announcement that they couldn’t build their car at a reasonable price also increased this perception. I want to see EVs continue to fill all the niches in the automotive world (especially a van with decent range), but at this point some high-profile affordable options would help. We’ll see how the VW rollout goes! One of the things I like about your podcast is that you talk about all the EVs out there from halo cars to compact cars. Show #736 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 2nd April 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. A massive thank you to MIA OPPELSTRUP who becomes a partner for the month of April because she wants to support the podcast, and the community of people who make this show what is. CHARGING NETWORKS HELP DURING COVID-19 From Volta Charging in the U.S.: "We are using our ad-supported free charging network to spread CDC messages about staying home, social distancing, self care etc. Over a thousand screens in the US and majority located directly in front of essential businesses like grocery stores to make sure people see it." At @BPChargemaster , we’re responding as best we can: Free charging for emergency services fleets Waiving April & May subscription fees for individuals Lending @EVEC_MK cars to @metpoliceuk and @mkcouncil Supporting staff volunteering for @NHSuk JEEP RENEGADE 4XE AND COMPASS 4XE PHEVS ON AN EPIC 3,800 KM ROAD TEST "After showcasing the duo for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show last year, Jeep has commenced cold-weather testing of the Compass and Renegade plug-in hybrid in Arjeplog, Sweden. The American carmaker is taking a 3800-kilometre road trip with both the SUVs from their Mirafiori plant in Turin to the Proving Ground in the Lapland." according to Car Wale: "Both the SUVs are powered by a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. The standard combustion engine powers the front wheels whereas the electric motor takes care of the rear axle lending both the SUVs an electrified all-wheel-drive system. The Renegade has a combined output between 190bhp and 240bhp which is good enough for a 0-100kmph time of seven seconds. On the other hand, the Compass plug-in hybrid variant puts out 240bhp but the final number is yet to be officialised as they are pending homologation. Both cars are reported to have a pure electric range of approximately 50 kilometres and a top speed of 130kmph." A website giving customers in Europe the first chance to pre-order the Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe now allow for full orders to be made. Jeep showrooms are going online with Google Hangouts so customers can discover the new models in the line-up, chat to a sales consultant and go ahead with the order of their vehicle. Italy is the first market to use this ‘remote’ contact technology, which will be extended to other countries. Green Car Reports say: "While FCA hasn’t confirmed whether the PHEV Renegade and Compass are headed to the U.S., it has heavily teased the Wrangler, which is built on some components carried over from the Pacifica Hybrid van, as one that America will get. Global president, Christian Meunier said that the U.S. will move to electrification faster than most predict, and he noted that going electric is “an opportunity to improve the capabilities of our trucks and SUVs and make it even more exciting off-road and on-road.” Meunier said that in plug-in hybrid or fully electric form, the Wrangler Rubicon will be able to get to 60 mph in six seconds and outperform the gasoline or diesel Wrangler. “You’re going to get the most capable Jeep ever,” he declared. https://www.carwale.com/news/jeep-compass-and-renegade-plugin-hybrid-undergoing-testing-in-arjeplog/ https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127669_electric-jeeps-reportedly-coming-to-the-us-will-be-more-capable-than-gas-or-diesel TOYOTA AND BYD ANNOUNCE ELECTRIC CAR VENTURE "Toyota Motor Co. and Chinese electric automaker BYD Co. announced a partnership Thursday to develop battery-powered vehicles, adding to a flurry of industry tie-ups to share soaring development costs." writes the Washington Post today: "Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co. and other brands have linked up with Chinese producers to create lower-cost electric models. BYD also has a separate electric vehicle venture, Denza, with Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz. Toyota and BYD “determined that there is much we can learn from one another’s expertise,” the companies said in a statement. They gave no financial details or sales plans." www.washingtonpost.com/business/technology/toyota-chinas-byd-announced-electric-car-venture Operations are scheduled to commence in May 2020. The name of the new company is BYD TOYOTA EV TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. (BTET). Newly appointed CEO Zhao Binggen commented, “This joint venture company will focus on the research and development of battery electric vehicles with technology and know-how from both China and Japan. The company is committed to promoting and populating high-quality technologies that make battery electric vehicles more environmentally friendly, safe, comfortable, and intelligent. Our vision is to create a future customer-first mobility style, and a harmonious society for humans and nature.” FIRST DETAILS ON PPE ELECTRIC CAR PLATFORM FOR FUTURE AUDIS AND PORSCHES "Audi and Porsche, both brands from the Volkswagen Group, have developed separate platforms for their first volume electric cars. Audi's E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback for example ride on a battery-electric version of the flexible MLB Evo platform that underpins most of Audi's lineup. Meanwhile, Porsche uses a dedicated EV platform known as J1 for the Taycan. The J1 will also underpin Audi's upcoming E-Tron GT super sedan and possibly other models at the Volkswagen Group." says Motor Authority: "The PPE will have an 800-volt architecture, just like the J1. The high voltage, in combination with efficient cooling systems, means cars based on the PPE will be able to charge at rates of up to 350 kilowatts, making 80-percent charges in about 20 minutes possible. The PPE is designed for vehicles of the size of the Audi A4 and up, and it's suited to both low- and high-riding applications. And because of superior packaging of EVs, vehicles based on the PPE will have more interior space compared to internal-combustion vehicles of a similar size." https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1113147_first-details-ppe-electric-car-platform-future-audis-porsches AIWAYS TO START TAKING ONLINE ORDERS FOR U5 ELECTRIC SUV IN EUROPE AIWAYS, the Shanghai-based personal mobility provider, is to start taking online orders for its U5 all-electric SUV from European consumers from the end of April. Secured via a small deposit, the U5 will be offered exclusively via a direct-to-customer sales model, and not retailed or leased through traditional dealerships. European pre-sale markets and the required deposit amount will be announced by AIWAYS in April. AIWAYS has re-started production of the U5 at its manufacturing facility in Shangrao, China, following the interruption caused by COVID-19 (coronavirus). Production of the European U5 will start in July, with the first deliveries now slated for August 2020. FACELIFTED BMW 5 SERIES SPIED IN SALOON AND ESTATE FORMS "New prototypes of the facelifted BMW 5 Series have been caught revealing new details ahead of its scheduled launch later this year. " says Greg at Autocar: "The prototype displayed here is propelled by a plug-in hybrid powertrain, shown by the mandatory identification on its front doors as well as the flap for the charging port integrated into the front-left wing. As part of a push to take its plug-in hybrid drivelines into the performance car class, BMW is said to be planning a new 545e model running the same set-up as the 745e. This would use a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine and an electric motor making a combined 388bhp and yielding an electric-only range of up to 36 miles." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/facelifted-bmw-5-series-spied-saloon-and-estate-forms TODAY THE $1,875 FEDERAL TAX CREDIT FOR GM IS GONE "Today (April 1, 2020), with the beginning of a new quarter, plug-in electric cars manufactured by General Motors are not eligible for the U.S. federal tax credit anymore." reports InsideEVs: "During the first quarter, it was already lowered to a maximum of $1,875 for cars delivered by the end of March 2020. Three months earlier, also Tesla lost its eligibility. Manufacturers are eligible for up to $7,500 per plug-in electric car only for the limited number of 200,000 sales. Reaching the limit triggers a gradual phase-out over several following quarters." https://insideevs.com/news/407295/today-federal-tax-credit-gm-gone/ TESLA MODEL Y MEETS SANDY MUNRO "With a trusty gap-measuring device, he measures panel gaps on the hood, hatchback and other areas and finds a lot of inconsistencies, especially at the rear near the taillights. Most of them are things buyers likely won't notice, but other areas -- including the hood and taillights -- aren't exactly what should be expected of an SUV starting at $60,990 as shown." writes CNET: "Munro also remarks on the paint and notices dirt and other impurities stuck underneath the coat. But, overall, he likes it and has plenty of positives. The doors are bang-on with wonderful fit and finish, Munro loves the load level for the back hatch with a totally flat floor. He also thinks it drives mighty well." https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/tesla-model-y-sandy-munro-auto-manufacturing/ LAST COAL-FIRED GENERATING PLANTS CLOSING IN UK & NEW YORK "The end of burning coal to generate electricity is continuing. In the UK, two large coal-fired facilities have been closed recently — Fiddler’s Ferry in Cheshire and Aberthaw in Wales. Fiddler’s Ferry was first commissioned in 1973 and had a peak capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Aberthaw was rated at 1,560 megawatts." says Clean Technica: "CNBC reports the UK government said last week that electricity from coal declined 60% in 2019. In all, coal provided 6.9 terawatts of power to the UK last year, a record low in modern history. In 1990, 70% of the country’s electricity came from burning coal. Last year it was 3%." Whereas in the U.S. Steve Hanley says: "In the next few weeks, the Somerset Operating Company, the last coal-fired generating plant in New York, is scheduled to close. According to The New York Times, Beowulf Energy, which owns the plant, says it wants to convert it into a data hub and server farm, but many locals worry they will not be qualified for jobs in the tech area after a lifetime as attendants at the coal generating station." https://cleantechnica.com/2020/04/01/last-coal-fired-generating-plants-closing-in-uk-new-york/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK With VW ID.3 facing software rewrites, how hard should we be on legacy auto makers when they hit EV speedbumps? PANASONIC TO SUSPEND BATTERY PRODUCTION AT TESLA GIGAFACTORY "Panasonic announced that it will scale down operations and temporarily suspend lithium-ion battery cell production at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada (for 14 days) due to the coronavirus outbreak." reports InsideEVs: "The news follows Tesla's announcement about closing the Fremont factory and New York factory on March 24, but is quite surprising, as Tesla did not give any sign - on March 19th - that the Gigafactory will also be closed. At the moment there is also no official comment from Tesla." Here is the statement: Panasonic is committed to safeguarding the health and well-being of every employee. The Panasonic factory in Sparks, Nevada will begin ramping down operations early next week and will then close for 14 days. Employees impacted by the closure will receive full pay and benefits for the 14-day period. In the meantime, Panasonic has enacted several measures to enhance the cleanliness of the facility, encourage social distancing, and enable simple, safe and effective behaviors. During the 14-day period, the facility will undergo intensive cleaning." https://insideevs.com/news/405426/panasonic-stop-battery-production-tesla-gigafactory/ https://techcrunch.com/2020/03/20/tesla-partner-panasonic-is-shutting-down-its-operations-at-nevada-gigafactory/ ŠKODA AUTO has closed Czech plants due to coronavirus pandemic for initial period of minimal two weeks Bentley Motors will suspend production from today at its Crewe, UK, factory headquarters for four weeks. Volvo cars to temporarily close plants in U.S. and Sweden due to coronavirus. Volvo's Swedish factories in Torslanda, Skovde, Olofstrom, and its U.S. plant in South Carolina will close between March 26 and April 14, the company said. Its plant in Ghent, Belgium has already been temporarily shut down. @Rivian Update: To keep our teams safe and slow the spread of COVID-19, we have shut down all Rivian facilities. We are committed to everyone on our team. Both our salaried and hourly workforce will continue to be paid during this shutdown. Stay safe everyone. FORD TAKES GO ELECTRIC CAMPAIGN ON THE ROAD IN UK "It has become fashionable to lambaste legacy automakers for being quick to promise electrification of their product lineups but slow to actually do so. But some are actually starting to put their money where their mouth is." reports Steve Hanley at CleanTechnica: "In the UK, Ford has created a Go Electric campaign that will tour the country, bringing the word about electric cars to every city and village in the country between now and the end of the year before moving on to several European countries. Ford calls it “a unique, immersive, and interactive experience designed to help consumers make an informed choice on electrified vehicles. Hands-on, engaging activities will help de-mystify electrification and inspire confidence in consumers who often remain confused about the different types of electrified powertrains available and their benefits.” https://cleantechnica.com/2020/03/22/ford-takes-go-electric-campaign-on-the-road-in-uk/ HERE’S HOW 20 POPULAR EVS FARED IN COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Electric vehicles are known to suffer diminished performance in cold weather, but some do a better job than others hanging onto their range capacity while cabin heaters and frigid outdoor temperatures sap power from their batteries. Recently, the Norwegian Automobile Federation put the 20 of the best-selling battery-electric vehicles in the country to the test, to see not only how winter weather affected their range but also their charging times." says Autoblog: "On average, electric vehicles lost 18.5% of their official driving range as determined by the European WLTP cycle. Electric vehicles also charge more slowly in cold temperatures. Hyundai Kona, which lost only 9% of its official range, which the WTLP rated at 449 kilometers, or 279 miles, compared to its EPA-rated range of 258 miles on a full charge. It delivered 405 km, just enough to nudge it ahead of the Tesla Model 3, which returned 404 km." https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/21/electric-cars-cold-weather-testing/ MERCEDES-BENZ TO LAUNCH 10 EVS IN INDIA IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS "The largest luxury carmaker in India, Mercedes-Benz, which will start selling its first electric vehicle in the country in April, plans to launch 10 more electric products in the next two years, says MD and CEO Martin Schwenk." says Fortune India: "The Indian customer is different in many aspects. The Indian economy is still very much an investing economy. Indians push for more. With that restlessness, there is also a brand of customers that want to go electric and want more." https://www.fortuneindia.com/enterprise/mercedes-benz-to-launch-10-evs-in-india-in-the-next-two-years-ceo/104281 TESLA’S “TOUCHLESS” DELIVERIES WILL HELP GET MODEL Y OUT TO CUSTOMERS "Through the Tesla App, buyers will be able to unlock their vehicle as delivered and do a quick inspection. Then they simply sign any relevant paperwork placed in the car—with their own pen, to stay safe, we presume—and then leave the paperwork in a dropbox." writes Green Car Reports: "If the production ramp of the Model 3 was any indication, and if Tesla follows past patterns of delivering a concentration of vehicles right before the end of each quarter (late this month), it will need a method of delivering thousands of vehicles in the coming weeks and months that will keep customers comfortable in light of health concerns. " TESLA MAKES THOUSANDS OF ELECTRIC CARS AVAILABLE IN INVENTORY "With only just over a week left in the quarter, we now see thousands of inventory vehicles across North American markets. In the LA area alone, Tesla has over 150 Model 3 vehicles in inventory for sale" analyses Fred at Electrek: "We can find similar amounts of inventory Tesla vehicles in dozens of other markets in the US. Normally, Tesla would be able to sell most of those utilizing its marketing tools and foot traffic in its stores in malls, but most of those have closed this week. With new vehicles coming to inventory next month, it might be a while before Tesla goes back to its usual low inventory business model." https://electrek.co/2020/03/20/tesl-electric-cars-available-inventory/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Returns soon! Show #637 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 10th November 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. EMAIL FROM LISTENER WES ELLIS: We yanks have the awesome service provided by MyEV, but you seem to have all of the good toys for charging your ev. Specifically I am looking for an EVSE that provides features such as the Ohme cable or the Zappi charger. We just had solar installed and would like our EVSE to be solar and tariff aware. Do you know of anyone offering such a solution in the USA or could you reach out to your adoring audience to see if any of them knowS AUDI E-TRON S POSSIBLY SPIED TESTING AT THE NURBURGRING AGAIN "We first spied a hotter version of the Audi E-Tron in May when our spy photographers caught the E-Tron S at the Nürburgring. We haven’t seen it since then." says Motor1.com but now we have some photos of a new run: "There’s a good chance the E-Tron in the video could be the hotter S version. The intakes that flank the front fascia are bigger than the ones on the standard E-Tron, though not by much. Larger and wider wheels plus a new rear diffuser design hint that this is sportier than the current offering. When Audi unveiled the original concept in 2015, the E-Tron had a 3-motor setup with two powering the rear axle and one powering the front. The E-Tron on sale today has two motors. This could be the 3-motor E-Tron. In concept form, the E-Tron made 496 hp, and, like the production model, also had a 95-kilowatt-hour battery." https://www.motor1.com/news/381333/audi-e-tron-s-spied/ EPA RATES 2020 KARMA REVERO GT WITH 61 MILES OF EV RANGE "The Environmental Protection Agency has rated the all-electric range to 61 miles or 98 kilometers, making the Karma the next best option after the Polestar 1 performance-oriented grand tourer with plug-in hybrid propulsion." according to Auto Evolution: "Compared to the 2018 Revero, the 2020 model year makes use of a 28-kWh battery instead of 21.4 kWh. Acceleration from zero to 60 takes 4.5 seconds as opposed to 5.4 seconds, and the dual-motor RWD layout features torque vectoring to better handling in the twisties. Total system output? Make that 535 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, translating to a top speed of 125 miles per hour." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/epa-rates-2020-karma-revero-gt-with-61-miles-of-ev-range-138930.html CHEVROLET MENLO EV MAKES GLOBAL PREMIERE IN CHINA The Chevrolet Menlo EV made its global premiere in China at 2019 Chevrolet Gala Night. The Chevrolet Blazer seven-seat mid-large SUV also was shown for the first time in China at the event." according to Green Car Congress: "The Chevrolet Menlo will be the brand’s first fully electric vehicle available in China. The Menlo has a constant-speed range of up to 410 kilometers (255 miles) under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) conditions on a single charge. The Chevrolet Menlo has adopted the athletic design of the Chevrolet FNR-X all-purpose sports concept vehicle. The Chevrolet Menlo comes with the new-generation MyLink+ infotainment system. Functions include virtual car key, remote control and intelligent voice recognition." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/11/20191110-menlo.html HONDA WORKS ON SECOND EV, QUITS DIESEL, AND PUTS HYDROGEN ON HOLD "Why has it taken until now for [Honda] to commit to plug-in power? It’s been a case of biding time, according to Honda Europe’s senior vice president Tom Gardner." says Driving.co.uk: "Now that the final piece of the jigsaw has fallen into place, Honda has a bold new goal: ensuring every car it sells in Europe by 2022 is electrified, facilitated by the launch of six hybrid or pure-electric cars over the next three years. The popularity of the CR-V Hybrid has had no small part to play in this drive towards battery power. While the electrification target is being influenced by demand from car buyers, Honda admits political pressure has also been a motivation. Tough new emissions regulations across Europe and the rest of the world have helped force all car makers’ hands." Honda Europe’s president Katsushi Inoue did nothing to change that perception. “Our focus is on hybrid and electric vehicles now,” he told us. “Maybe hydrogen fuel cell cars will come, but that’s a technology for the next era.” Ian Howells, Honda Europe’s senior vice president, added: “We’re in the situation where the infrastructure isn’t there either [to support hydrogen fuel cell cars]. There is an infrastructure being developed very rapidly for battery electric cars, but there’s nothing really to talk of about hydrogen, so there’s a way to go yet.” https://www.driving.co.uk/news/honda-embracing-electrified-cars-now-right-time/ FROM MATT GROOBY: AUSTRALIAN GRID HITS 50% RENEWABLES FOR FIRST TIME "renewables provided 50.2% of the electricity available on Australia’s National Energy Market in the first week of November. The NEM supplies electricity to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania" says Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "During those 10 minutes, solar power led the way, providing 32.5% of the available electricity. Wind was next at 15.7%, and hydro provided 1.9%. There are more than 2 million small rooftop solar systems in those 5 Australian states and they provided 72% of the solar power, while solar power plants contributed the other 28%." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/10/australian-grid-hits-50-renewables-for-first-time/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS RAJEEV NARAYAN I would prefer both incentives for EVs and penalties for polluting but if forced to pick one, I guess I would pick penalties for carbon emissions. I am assuming that would cost governments less than direct cash incentives and therefore be able to be applied more broadly for longer than incentives alone. STEPHEN JAMES I am definitely a carrot person. I have solar panels and I really wanted to buy a EV car. I was looking at the MG ZS EV but I could simply not afford the extra £8000 that the same petrol version MG ZS costs. I bought the petrol MG ZS and I love it but I still feel gutted that the EV version is still out of my price range. If the government had better incentive programs running to bring the on the road price down I would have definitely purchased the full EV model. BILL POLLOCK Price Parity...a stick that doesn't look like a stick. We listeners don't need a moral incentive to choose electric, most people don't. As the soft barriers of range and charge time fall away what remains is the cost to buy. In Canada a fully kitted out Jaguar F-Pace costs $85,000; whereas an equally kitted out I-Pace costs $115,000. So...if you price both the F-Pace and the I-Pace at $105,000, for the time being the added margin on the F's will balance the losses (if any) on the I's. PETER BRYN I love EVs, but to me they’re a means to an end. The goal is to eliminate emissions, and therefore absolutely the most important policy is a price on carbon. For listeners who feel the same, please get involved with Citizens’ Climate Lobby. PETE FROM CALIFORNIA The carrot. Always the carrot. We don't have EVs with comparable range in winter climates so sticks are kind of a rotten nudge right now. More importantly, I want better carrots. Forget a "per EV basis", how about a billion dollar incentive towards a solid state battery that gets 500 to 800 watt hours per kilogram and can be cut clean in half without thermal runaway, and another billion dollars if it's royalty-free? What we need is a research solution that makes EVs accessible for every type of vehicle, and tackling things at the battery manufacturing end is what will get us there. SACHA FLEURY In short , STICKS ! Incentives are often seen by many as giveaway time the wealthy. While carrots are more positive ,most of the people that I’ve seen insisting they need to burn fossil fuels state cost as being the main driver , proper BEVs are still marginally more expensive at time of purchase for equal functionality but the price of ICE vehicles is lower because it’s practically free to pollute in many countries ... Therefore we need sticks to (in the form of non-regressive carbon pricing) : for example , we could make it such that any new non-bev that sells for the median price of a BEV or more would require paying the cost of dealing with the environmental impact of the vehicle (say 30 to 40% of MSRP ) This cashflow then funds the climate change initiatives like charging infrastructure while customers’ purchase decision becomes a lot easier. Doing it this way (as opposed to fuel tax ) won’t impact people with lesser means - people that can’t afford a new car in the first place. MUNAVER I prefer the carrot approach as incentives can be offered as money off On purchase of the car . Others like reduced stamp duty ,registration cost free parking in all paid parking lots , waiving toll road fees and further incentives when trading in ice cars for EV’s . This would make any new ice car purchaser think hard and long before purchasing an ice car John Fruhwirth After much deliberation, I come down on the side of using carrots versus sticks to get people to convert to EVs. My reasons are as follows: The case for the carrot It's a good idea to make the right thing to do the easy thing to do. Pleasure is a better motivator than pain. Enlightened self interest is a fabulous motivator. The case against the stick. Inflicting pain builds resentment and may lead to retribution. People are very creative when devising methods of avoiding pain. Inflicting pain is debilitating and so counter productive. LUKE MCCArthy I would say use the carrot for consumers which will in turn drive manufacturer decision making. I think that the consumer uptake of EVs has or is moving from innovators to early adopters using the diffusion of innovation theory. The early adopters or even the early majority already know the upsides of EVs and I would expect there are only a few things holding them back from buying, one being the cost. So in this regard the carrot works best. RICHARD FROM AUSTRALIA If it has to be one or the other, I'd have to say Stick. If we're serious about tackling the climate crisis and pollution that we've done nothing about since we discovered its impact, we need to introduce harsh measures now to get the mainstream off fossils and move to Electrification. I'd introduce a £1 extra tax on every litre of fossil fuels every calendar year from now on, including for aviation, farming and industry. I'd also remove the ability of companies to claim the cost of fossil fuels as a tax deduction. QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you prefer, the carrot or the stick? TESLA TO UNLOCK EXTENDED RANGE FOR WILDFIRES "Tesla owners living in areas affected by the ongoing CA wildfires will be able to tap into the maximum range offered by their vehicles, even if they purchased trims that feature a software-limited battery pack. The update was confirmed by CEO Elon Musk on Twitter Monday morning." says Simon at Teslarati: " owners of electric cars such as the Model S 40, Model S 60, and Model S 70 will be able to gain extra range for their electric cars. This is made possible by Tesla equipping the vehicles with a larger battery pack that is software-locked. The Model S 40, for example, is equipped with a 60 kWh battery that’s software-limited to 40 kWh. Tesla is yet to confirm if the Standard Range Model 3 will also have its full battery capacity unlocked. Musk’s recent tweet seems to confirm that free unlimited Supercharging will also be enabled for owners in areas that are affected by the ongoing CA wildfires. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-range-upgrade-ca-wildfires-elon-musk/ TESLA CUTS PRICE OF SOLAR AND POWERWALL INSTALLATIONS FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES "Elon Musk says that Tesla is focusing installations for people affected by the California wildfires: “Apologies to those waiting for Solar/Powerwall outside California, as we are prioritizing those affected by wildfires.” The CEO even said that they are offering $1,000 discounts to them" according to Electrek: "Musk has especially been talking about the capacity to avoid power outages by combining solar power with Powerwall battery packs. The CEO says that Tesla Energy is becoming a distributed global utility and it could outgrow its automotive business." GENERAL MOTORS SIDES WITH TRUMP "General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and Toyota say the reason they’re backing the Trump administration in its assault on California’s decades-old campaign to reduce auto emissions is to avoid fragmenting the industry in search of a single national environmental standard." reports The LA TImes: " Those companies and the coalition, which includes such other manufacturers as Subaru, Hyundai, Mazda and Nissan, filed a brief for the defense — that is, the Trump administration — in a lawsuit challenging its effort to roll back existing auto emission and mileage standards." https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2019-10-29/automakers-trump-emissions MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR PRICES FOR US MARKET "MINI was one of the first auto manufacturers to offer a battery electric version of a production car. In 2009, it began leasing its MINI E, a modified version of the popular MINI Cooper, in selected US markets. That car had an EPA range of 100 miles" according to Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "Now the battery electric MINI Cooper SE is ready for its debut in world markets and the company has just announced its starting price in the US will be $29,900 plus $850 shipping and handling. The first cars will reach dealers in America in March of 2020. With federal, state, and local incentives, a new MINI Cooper SE could cost as little as $17,900 and come with special privileges such as access to HOV lanes during commuting hours." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-prices-for-us-market-announced/ MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR STARTS AS LOW AS $17,900 Meanwhile electrek notes: "When BMW unveiled the production version of the electric Mini Cooper SE earlier this year, some people were disappointed by the fact that the vehicle was based on the older BMW i3 electric platform. It’s equipped with the i3’s older 32.6 kWh battery pack, which Mini says is good for a range of 235 to 270 km (146-168 miles) based on the WLTP cycle. It means closer to 130 miles on the EPA cycle. The battery pack is limited to 50 kW DC fast-charging and it feeds a 135 kW/184 hp motor." https://electrek.co/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-price-us/ RENAULT’S K-ZE OFFERED CHINA HEADS TO EUROPE "Renault is planning a modified version of the City K-ZE small electric car offered at competitive prices in China for the European market. However, the price for Europe is still unclear, as is the brand under which the K-ZE will be sold in Europe." says Electrive: " it is most likely that the European version of the City K-ZE will be offered by the Renault brand Dacia. Renault presented the K-ZE at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, and the car has been on sale since September for 61,800 yuan, the equivalent of just under 7,900 euros. It has an engine power of 33 kW, a torque of 125 Nm and a 26.8 kWh rechargeable battery" https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/28/renaults-k-ze-offered-china-heads-to-europe/ WORLD’S LARGEST STORAGE BATTERY — 2.5 GWH A site on Vernon Avenue in Queens, New York, once was home to 16 gas powered peaker plants. Only 2 remain in operation today. Soon, all of them will be demolished to make room for a 316 MW/2528 MWh storage battery that will be the largest in the world. The proposal to build the new facility was approved last week by the New York Public Service Commission." reports CleanTechnica: "The proposed storage project will consist of 136 battery storage and inverter units, 64 of which will be double stacked on the property." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/worlds-largest-storage-battery-2-5-gwh-to-replace-gas-peaker-plants-in-queens/ FORD OF EUROPE PILOTING GEOFENCING AND BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY "Ford is extending its European plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) trial to Cologne. The study, which is also testing Ford PHEVs on the streets of London and Valencia, Spain, aims to better analyse and show the real-world benefits of such vehicles for the environment and for commercial vehicle owners and operators." says Green Car Congress: "Each of the 10 PHEVs in the 12-month Cologne trial features the FordPass Connect on-board cellular modem, and a plug-in device which enables the geofencing and blockchain capabilities. Whenever a trial vehicle enters a controlled zone, its electric-drive mode is triggered and the zero-emission driving green miles are documented. The emissions mode and time that vehicles enter or leave a controlled zone are recorded to a secure distributed ledger—a blockchain—ensuring emissions data is safely stored and shared among relevant parties including city authorities and the vehicle or fleet owners." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191028-ford.html THE FIRST GAS STATION TO CONVERT TO AN EV-CHARGING STATION IN AMERICA From Jalopnik: "About a month ago, RS Automotive opened in Takoma Park, Maryland, as the first U.S. gas station that’s been converted fully to an EV charging station, reports NPR. Its owner, Depeswar Doley, has kept the station looking largely the same as a regular gas station, so sometimes there’s confusion from drivers who pull up with their internal combustion engine cars, looking to fill up." “A lot of them pull up and get upset” https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-first-gas-station-to-convert-to-an-ev-charg-1839412347 QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #620 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 24th October 2019. NISSAN LEAF WITH TWO ELECTRIC MOTORS "Thanks to a pair of electric motors – one for each axle – the EV offers a combined output of 304 hp and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft). With one electric motor powering the front wheels and the other driving the rear ones, it means the experimental vehicle benefits from an AWD layout." says Motor1.com: "Performance details have not been disclosed, but Nissan says the dual-motor setup enables the Leaf to deliver “highly responsive, yet uncommonly smooth, acceleration.” It goes without saying it’s quicker than the standard Leaf e+, which offers 214 hp and 340 Nm (251 lb-ft) for a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 6.9 seconds. Even though the sporty Leaf is not going into production, it does demonstrate Nissan can develop a performance electric hatch and also gets us ready for a soon-to-be-revealed “next-generation EV that will be a true breakthrough.” https://www.motor1.com/news/378219/nissan-leaf-dual-electric-motors/ WHAT SHOULD FORD NAME THEIR NEW ELECTRIC MUSTANG-INSPIRED SUV? "By now we all know that Ford is planning to unveil an all-new battery-electric SUV based on Mustang design cues. The little teaser line-drawing they released shows Mustang-style triple-bar taillights and I suppose some Mustang-ish character lines there. One thing yet to be decided, though, is the name." reports Jalopnik: "So far, we’ve heard Ford was considering calling it Mach 1, after the famous Mustang version, though that name seems to have been dropped. Mach-E seems to be the current frontrunner, but that’s not set in stone, as far as we can tell." https://jalopnik.com/what-should-ford-name-their-new-electric-mustang-inspir-1839356809 THE E-GOLF IS DEAD SOON: LONG LIVE THE VW GOLF VIII GTE AND THE PHEV "On September 22, we told you the e-Golf would be no more, but that the eighth-generation Golf would get another PHEV option besides the GTE. That was the intel Autocar had on the matter, and it proved to be accurate when the new vehicle was presented on October 24. With a 13 kWh Li-Ion battery pack good for a range of around 60 km (37 miles)." according to InsideEVs: "While the GTE delivers 241 hp (180 kW), Volkswagen speaks of a new “efficiency version” that produces 201 hp and has no defined name so far. We’ll call it merely PHEV for the time being. Volkswagen says the car is almost totally digital now and that it has Car2X, a device that allows it to communicate with other vehicles and even infrastructure with the same sort of communication equipment." https://insideevs.com/news/378473/egolf-dead-golf-viii-phev/ Green Car Congress say: " The new Golf will be the first Volkswagen that will be available with five hybrid drives. In this process, 48-V technology is celebrating its debut at Volkswagen: a 48-V belt starter generator, 48-V lithium ion battery and the most recent generation of efficient TSI engines form a new mild hybrid drive in the eTSI. As a result, fuel consumption has been cut by around 10% (on WLTP basis) and the vehicle is very agile and comfortable when moving off." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191024-golf.html Electrive points out: "Volkswagen is thus making a clear distinction between the Modular Transverse Module (MQB) in the Golf and the Modular Electrification Module (MEB) in ID.3. Not only that, but the nomenclature is also changing: the plug-in hybrids are now called eHybrids. The two available versions basically have the same drive train and the externally rechargeable battery has a capacity of 13 kilowatt hours (kWh). The system is designed as a parallel hybrid, so the electric motor sits between four cylinders on one side and a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) on the other. " https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/24/volkswagen-presents-golf-8-with-with-five-hybrid-versions/ HONDA'S RETRO-STYLED E WAS ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR THE US "The United States narrowly missed being included in Honda's distribution plans for the new E urban electric car, its project manager has revealed, and if attitudes change, Honda's plans might too. "The U.S. was included in the beginning," Kohei Hitomi told Jalopnik. "I personally wanted to see it." says Green Car Reports: "But three years ago, he says, that changed, because Honda's higher-ups feared that there would be no demand for an urban electric runabout here in the United States. Honda has been monitoring the E's worldwide reception and Kohei acknowledged that the response from the U.S. media was surprisingly positive, and he even teased the possibility that Honda could rethink its distribution strategy down the line." https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1125676_honda-s-retro-styled-e-was-originally-planned-for-the-us SEAT MII ELECTRIC PRICED FROM £19,300 INCLUDING PICG The SEAT Mii electric is now available to order across the manufacturer’s UK dealer network. The fully-electric city car marks the first chapter in SEAT’s electrification programme, as the brand begins to shift towards meeting the demands of an ever-changing market. Priced from £19,300 (including PiCG), the Mii electric is one of the most affordable electric vehicles on the market. Complementing this is a tempting PCP offer from £199 per month with £4,399 customer deposit thanks to a SEAT UK deposit contribution of £500 and APR of 6.9%. The car’s 36.8kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides up to 161 miles (WLTP) of range from a single charge, based on the WLTP test cycle. Rapid charging (DC at 40kW) to 80% takes an hour. BOLLINGER ELECTRIC SUV & PICKUP PRICES ANNOUNCED "Prices for the all electric SUV and pickup truck from Bollinger have been announced. Choosing between them won’t be a decision based on cost, as both list for $125,000. For that, you get a Class C truck with a 125 kWh battery and around 200 miles | 321 km of range." acccording to Steve Hanley at CleanTechnica: "Both feature dual motors, 614 horsepower, and 669 pound-feet of torque. They also have ten 110 volt AC outlets scattered about. 240 volt outlets are available as an optional upgrade. According to AutoBlog, the vehicles can be recharged to 100% capacity in 10 hours using a Level 2 charger or 75 minutes if a DC fast charger is available. 15 inches of ground clearance and a self-leveling, hydro-pneumatic suspension that allows the driver to adjust the ride height. The front and rear differentials can be locked electronically, while a two-speed gear box offers off-road grunt or highway cruising." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/24/bollinger-electric-suv-pickup-prices-announced/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by Chris Meilak: "Would you buy a new EV which only has AC charging (ie Zoe) or CHAdeMO (ie Nissan) today?" A previous tweet by Vincent claimed that some people who have ordered a Model 3 in China have started receiving tutorials about the operation of their cars. Usually, those tutorials are sent out 4 to 6 weeks before delivery of the cars takes place." according to Steve Hanley at CleanTechnica: "According to Interesting Engineering, the leaked photo was attributed to Weibo user 常岩, who is the chief auto editor of Tencent Auto. Tencent is a giant Chinese tech firm that owns approximately 5% of Tesla. A subsequent tweet by Vincent said, “Rumor: Estimated that the first group of the Made in China Model 3 will be delivered in November.” https://cleantechnica.com/2019/09/23/breaking-1st-chinese-tesla-model-3s-are-rolling-down-gigafactory-3-assembly-line/ VOLKSWAGEN LAUNCHES PILOT PRODUCTION AHEAD OF GIGAFACTORY "The Volkswagen-Northvolt cooperation is taking off as they launch a first pilot production for battery cells at Volkswagen’s Salzgitter plant. Production is to scale up to 16 GWh at the end of 2023 and Volkswagen is investing around one billion euros." reports electrive: "Volkswagen is aiming to independently produce its own battery cells in a joint venture with Northvolt, rather than having to rely on battery systems from suppliers. At the Salzgitter plant in Germany where TDI and TSI engines are now rolling off the assembly line, the Center of Excellence (CoE) is already established with an initial 300 employees." they say, in a Translation into English from original German article: "Volkswagen today opened a pilot production facility as part of said CoE with the goal of testing, development and small-series production of battery cells. For Frank Blome, head of the CoE for battery cells, the pilot plant is “an important step on our way to building the gigafactory”. https://www.electrive.com/2019/09/23/volkswagen-to-build-a-gigafactory/ SWAGTRON’S $999 HIPSTER-SPEC ELECTRIC BIKE "Swagtron’s new EB12 electric bicycle is its first foray into full-sized commuter bikes. And while they didn’t quite hit the ball out of the park on their first try, they got it pretty darn close to the fence. With a sleek design and an electric boost, the Swagtron EB12 could be the perfect option for cash-strapped students or budget-minded city commuters that want a good bike for an even better price." says Micah Toll for Electrek: "Swagtron is known for building the most affordable electric bicycles in the game. And their playbook isn’t to just pump out cheap crap like some other budget companies. Rather, they cut out all the fat – all the components that aren’t strictly necessary – so that they can focus on putting decent components on whatever is left. No one expects a Swagtron e-bike to get passed down to their son. But they do expect a decent quality e-bike for an unbelievable price. And that’s exactly what Swagtron has done – yet again – with the EB12 electric bicycle. It’s a hardy commuter e-bike that offers exactly zero fancy features other than that it will get you where you’re going and look good while doing it." https://electrek.co/2019/09/23/review-swagtrons-999-hipster-spec-electric-bike-makes-a-great-city-e-bike/ FIAT CHRYSLER TO TEST VEHICLE-TO-GRID "Fiat Chrysler will set up an experimental fleet of up to 700 electric cars to test vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, which allows power grids to use energy stored in car batteries to face demand during peak hours." says Reuters: "FCA is taking its first steps into electric mobility as the Italian-American carmaker moves on from its failed $35 billion bid to merge with France’s Renault, a pioneer in electric vehicles. FCA on Thursday signed an agreement with Italy’s national grid operator Terna to jointly test a technology enabling electric vehicles to interact with the grid, through charging infrastructure. The project will include a feasibility study to launch an experimental demonstration fleet of cars connected to the grid via V2G infrastructure to be built in FCA’s Mirafioni plant in Turin, the two companies said in a statement." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-fiat-chrysler-electric/fiat-chrysler-to-test-vehicle-to-grid-technology-with-700-car-fleet-idUSKBN1W41KK NEW ELECTRIC PANEL FROM SPAN STREAMLINES SOLAR+STORAGE INSTALLATIONS "A new technology company led by former Tesla engineers has just released a smart electric panel that enables customers to easily adopt solar, storage, EVs and other clean energy technologies. The Span electric panel will begin installation in select markets in California and Hawaii." reports Solar Power World Online: "The Span panel replaces a traditional electrical panel to become the primary energy and control hub for the home. It displaces the need for many disparate pieces of equipment to install solar, storage and electric vehicles today with a single, integrated device. The result is a faster, more cost effective installation for both new homes and retrofits that delivers unprecedented functionality to the customer. The Span panel offers customizable backup power, enabling customers to intelligently prioritize the available energy in their homes especially during power outages or blackouts. This, paired with the ability to monitor and control home energy from anywhere at anytime through the Span mobile app, substantially differentiates the product from anything on the market today. By incorporating key electrical components into a single device, the Span panel simplifies design and deployment for solar and storage installers as well as energy companies." https://www.solarpowerworldonline.com/2019/09/new-electric-panel-from-span-streamlines-solarstorage-installations/ ROAMING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN NEWMOTION AND CHARGEPOINT ANNOUNCED "Company car drivers and fleet managers will enjoy simplified charging of electric vehicles (EVs) thanks to a new roaming partnership between NewMotion and ChargePoint. The electric vehicle charging infrastructure providers have announced a roaming partnership that will allow fleet drivers access to both charging networks.'" reports Fleet News: "By the end of the year, NewMotion and ChargePoint customers will be able to access each network without needing to create a new account." Sytse Zuidema, CEO of NewMotion, said: “This partnership is a big step forward for the UK’s public charging network and we hope to see a positive effect on the ease of use by EV drivers. We are pleased to offer our UK drivers additional access to ChargePoint, Inc’s network that includes a good few hundred rapid chargers. With this we’re able to expand our European charging network that already includes over 118,000 charge points.” https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/latest-fleet-news/2019/09/20/roaming-partnership-between-newmotion-and-chargepoint-announced QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… What do you want to hear on this podcast? Show #514 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 30th June 2019. JAGUAR TO ANNOUNCE HUGE INVESTMENT IN UK ELECTRIC CAR MANUFACTURING "Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will plough hundreds of millions of pounds into the British car industry by preparing one of its factories to build electric cars, in a much-needed boost for the sector." says City AM "JLR will modify its Castle Bromwich plant to build a series of three all-electric models, starting with an electric version of its luxury Jaguar XJ saloon, which is expected to launch next year. The plans, first reported in the Sunday Times, are set to be announced on Friday. The investment is a positive move by Britain’s biggest carmaker, which has struggled amid decreasing demand for diesel models." https://www.cityam.com/jaguar-to-announce-huge-investment-in-uk-electric-car-manufacturing/ And from Automotive News Europe: "Jaguar Land Rover said during an investor day on June 5 that it will launch its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) electric-capable platform on a "large SUV and a large premium sedan. MLA can be adapted for pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and mild-hybrid drivetrains. Electric cars using the MLA platform will have a range of up to 470 km (292 miles). JLR's first electric SUV is expected to be a battery-powered version of the next-generation Range Rover." https://europe.autonews.com/automakers/jaguar-land-rover-will-build-electric-cars-uk-factory-paper-says VOLKSWAGEN PARTIALLY FLOATS TRUCK GROUP TO FUND ELECTRIC CAR PUSH "Volkswagen has floated 11.5 per cent of its truck-making unit, now named Traton, on the Frankfurt and Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchanges. Weak demand from investors had forced the automaker to price the listing at the low end of its target price range. It also meant the company couldn't float the 25 per cent it had wanted to let go of." according to CarAdvice.com.au: "The Volkswagen Group is spending roughly €40 billion ($65 billion) to engineer an extensive range of electric cars, including affordable vehicles based on the new MEB platform, as well as more exclusive vehicles, like the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT." https://www.caradvice.com.au/770107/volkswagen-partially-floats-truck-group-to-fund-electric-car-push/ DRIVING AN ELECTRIC CAR FEELS LIKE A GAME From Sasha Lekach at MashableUK: "You can't drive a certain way and bring in more fuel in an internal-combustion engine vehicle; your fuel gauge only goes one direction: down. The hypermiling community tries to maximize fuel efficiency while driving, but the fuel supply never replenishes. But driving an EV, I was hooked — driving could essentially become a game, saving me money and energy as the battery recharged when I slowed down or naturally sped up heading down a hill. It also helped that the screen would indicate in real-time how much power I was generating or using." https://mashable.com/article/electric-vehicles-versus-gas-cars-regenerative-breaking-fun NORWAY TESLA MODEL 3 SALES IN 2019 EQUAL 50% OF MODEL S SALES SINCE 2013 "How popular is the Tesla Model 3 in Norway? According to TeslaStats.no, pretty darn popular, with 10,539 registered so far this year. (Two were registered in 2018.) Compare that to the 20,194 Model S sedans registered in Norway since 2013 and the 12,471 Model X SUVs registered since 2016." reports Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "It’s true that Norway has aggressive incentives for electric car buyers and those incentives have made that nation one of the global leaders in electric car adoption. But despite the silliness spouted by BMW’s head of research and development, Klaus Fröelich (he told an audience last week, “Boo hoo. Nobody wants to buy electric cars!”), there are lots of people who are very happy to buy an electric car if the terms are right" https://cleantechnica.com/2019/06/29/norway-tesla-model-3-sales-in-2019-equal-50-of-model-s-sales-since-2013 ELECTRIFY AMERICA REDUCES POWER OF SOME CHARGERS DUE TO COOLING ISSUE Another issue with liquid cooled fast-charging stations was reported, but this time it ended with simply lowering power output (instead of a total shut down). According to Green Car Reports' article, Electrify America was forced to reduce the power of 30 CCS chargers "due to concerns over a potential coolant leak". The affected chargers are reportedly Efacec HV160 and Efacec HV350 and the issue is global. Electrify America decided to lower the power from 160 kW/320 kW to 50 kW until the service team can visit the station and solve the issue (expected "within a week"). CHINA BEGINS SUBSIDY CUTS ON MUNICIPAL LEVEL “The Beijing government has abolished municipal subsidies for some electric vehicles. Manufacturers of electric vehicles in China can now only be granted subsidies from the central government before these are phased out next year." says electrive.com: "Subsidies for battery electric buses, city cleaning electric vehicles and electric vehicles purchased by government agencies are not affected by the change. Similarly, fuel cell vehicles will continue to receive both municipal and state subsidies. Earlier this year, the Chinese government announced that it will be cutting its subsidies for electric cars this year before they are to be completely abolished by 2020." https://www.electrive.com/2019/06/29/china-begins-subsidy-cuts-on-municipal-level/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK Doug Vowles, Brighton, Ontario, Canada Yes, EV’s have tons to prove, just not to me, to you, or most of your listeners. But they have much to prove to folks who can only afford a 15 year old $2,000 car or pick-up truck, and MUST have a vehicle for work, to drive to work, or to drive the kids to school. They have much to prove to the rural sector with scant access to charging stations, or those who live well away from major transportation corridors with fast chargers. You get the picture. Pete GORTON aka @GyroGordini In summary “Not Really”. We just need to get: - the price down, - many more models available, and - people discounting the FUD. To elaborate, EVs have been shown to be faster, stronger, more reliable and cheaper to operate, and a number of endurance tests have shown they can do nearly anything. ROB CRAWFORD Yes, especially with the Wall Street, who can't think past the next quarter, who listen to the egregious CNBC FUD about Tesla. I would encourage all EV owners to call your local TV News shows and tell them how owning an EV has changed the way you live your life now sans Petrol-gasoline! You'll have a local news team knocking on your front door. Tell them how you race your EV against ICE cars and beat them hands down. You'll get the local news Sportscaster out to your house. STEVE JAMES The only thing EV’s need to prove going forward is that they cost the same as a ICE car as the cost at the moment is so stretched in favour of not being unable to afford a brand new off the forecourt car. YASH OHJA, BANGALORE So my opinion on EVs having more to prove is that; Can EVs (battery and battery- fuel cells) withstand and perform normally (during their complete lifecycle) the high temperatures (going up to 50deg C in few parts of our country)!! Another point would be a bit something on the higher horse power segment .EV have to prove that can they successfully take over the locomotives and marine exhausts (the high horse power engines), which will be a good test!! MARK GARNETT I think with current EVs and imminent EVs from Mercedes, Porsche, Honda and VW we are in a good position to crush ICE sakes once-and-fir-all. What isn’t yet proven is the ability of the traditional OEMs to make EVs in useful volumes, as you said last Sunday, we keep hearing that battery contracts are secured but then get new announcements from the same players a bit later. The main thing holding back EV adoption now is availability; let’s not forget many vehicles are still leased or company cars, so these need replacing when the previous ROGER STARKEY Very little left to prove A lot to explain , educate. That's where you, and TryEv come in! Stefan Weilhartner • 1 day ago yes, BEV have something to prove: a cheaper total cost of ownership if you don't have a huge mileage per year. D R-K The electric car still has plenty to prove.... to the wholly uninformed who get the majority of their news from traditional media who fill their pages, airwaves and sites with FUD. Until they go mainstream and produce car commercials, the majority outside of our growing movement still think they are just a bit better than milk floats. COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The electric vehicle seemed poised in 1900 to be a leader, even the dominant force, in the early American car market. They were clean, odorless, noiseless and they were mechanically simple, compared to their rivals. Yet just two decades later the electric car was dead. This book explores this early history of the electric car. Ready to pre-order now. https://books.telegraph.co.uk/Product/Kerry-Segrave/The-Electric-Car-in-America-1890-1922--A-Social-History/22854971 AUDI ANNOUNCES E-TRON CHARGING SERVICE "Audi announced the launch of the Audi e-tron Charging Service, which will offer more than 72,000 public charging points (about 80% of all public charging stations operated by 220 providers) in 16 countries in the European Union under one contract and one access card/app." reports Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com: "We have mixed feelings about the offer, especially in Germany because the prices are per session instead for usage (but it could change over time). In other countries, there are fees per minute or per kWh." This is what Audi say: "To cover individual charging needs, the e-tron Charging Service offers two different tariffs. The “City” tariff is aimed primarily at urban commuters. It is available for a basic fee of €4.95 per month. For each charging process, customers then pay €7.95 for AC charging (up to 22 kW) and €9.95 for DC charging (up to 50 kW), regardless of the charging duration and how much energy is drawn. For drivers who regularly travel long-distance, Audi recommends the “Transit” tariff. This costs €17.95 per month, although a one-year waiver of the basic fee is granted for first-time Audi e-tron buyers. With the “Transit” tariff, customers benefit from better access conditions with HPC contract partners such as IONITY, higher charging capacities and shorter charging durations. The Audi e-tron is the first series-production model capable of charging with up to 150 kW at their HPC (high-power charging) stations. This means that the electric SUV is all set for the next long-distance stretch of a journey in approximately half an hour. And what’s more, the majority of electricity in IONITY’s network is generated from green sources.”" I saw first comments saying it was very expensive but remember that ~90kWh usable battery. On the DC fast charge deal, if you take 80kWh for 10Euros, that's still way cheaper than a tank of diesel. At a Supercharger that would cost 32 Euros. The IONITY deal is less attractive but it does incentivise long sessions, you're better off turning up with an empty battery. https://insideevs.com/audi-e-tron-charging-service/ NISSAN NV200 WILL BE AVAILABLE ONLY AS ELECTRIC It's not the prettiest EV on the road but not many vans ever win a beauty contest. "Nissan recently announced that it’ll discontinue the diesel version of the Nissan NV200 before the scheduled production stop that takes place in the summer. Therefore, in just a few months this van will be available only in its electric variant, the e-NV200." according to Pedro at Push EVs: "The electric van e-NV200, which is exclusively made at the Nissan Motor Ibérica plant in Barcelona got its production increased last year by 50 percent to 6.000 units. Currently the Nissan e-NV200 shares the same 40 kWh battery with the Nissan LEAF, it’ll be interesting to see if it’ll ever get the 62 kWh battery version and start selling in North America. On the Nissan USA website the Nissan e-NV200 is still listed as a future concept." https://pushevs.com/2019/02/01/nissan-nv200-will-be-available-only-as-electric/ CHINESE EV ON SALE IN UK BY AUTUMN "MG announced at its annual dealer’s conference in UK that its first all-electric car, the ZS EV, will be introduced in September 2019. Dealers also got an exclusive preview of the car" whilst all we have is a YouTube video in Chinese: "The company unveiled the eZS in China in 2018 and it seems that finally, British customers will get a chance to try an affordable (hopefully) EV from China (MG is part of Chinese SAIC). Range of the ZS EV stands at up to 286 miles (460 km) NEDC – about 220 miles (350 km) in the real world." Jon Timmis shared a YouTube video with me of the car, reviewed in England. At the time of recording this, it has been published 48 hours and had 25 views. It has a 44.5kWh battery. https://insideevs.com/mg-zs-ev-to-be-launched-in-uk-in-september-2019/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khwY3rAe3Ig TESLA BEGINS SALES OF CHEAPER MODEL 3 CAR VARIANT IN CHINA Tesla Inc said it will start taking orders in China on Friday for a lower-priced version of its Model 3 vehicle, whose price will start at 433,000 yuan (US$64,300.56). Chinese customers will be allowed to place orders for a long range, rear-wheel-drive Model 3 variant. Previously, the starting price for a Model 3 in China was 499,000 yuan, for an all-wheel-drive long range version. Tesla has sent two ships and at least one cargo plane with Model 3 vehicles to China, a logistics source familiar with the matter said." according to Channel News Asia. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/tesla-begins-sales-of-cheaper-model-3-car-variant-in-china-11194698 BYD KICKS OFF EUROPEAN ELECTRIC TRUCK CAMPAIGN IN SPAIN "BYD intends to be a major player in the market for heavy duty electric vehicles in Europe. It is already a leader in the production of electric buses on the Continent, with a factory in Allonne, France and second factory in Komarom, Hungary. Now it says it is ready to move into electric trucks." according to Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "According to Electrive, the three vehicles on display were the T6, a box truck with a weight rating of 7.5 tons, the Q1M yard tractor — a truck designed specifically for use by airports, seaports, and distribution centers — and the fully electric T3 commercial van. These are the first of a full range of electric light and heavy commercial vehicles that BYD plans to bring to market in Europe in the coming years." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/02/byd-kicks-off-european-electric-truck-campaign-in-spain/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS. "The new registrations were reported by Model 3 VIN tracking group @Model3VINs, which tracks Tesla’s filings for the electric sedan. This latest batch also complements the more than 14,800 Model 3 VINs that were registered in the week of January 6. That’s more than 42,000 Model 3 VINs filed during the first two weeks of the first quarter alone." https://www.teslarati.com/spacex-10-percent-workforce-fired-bfr-starlink-launches/ ELECTRIC VEHICLES ARE IN THE SPOTLIGHT AT DETROIT’S 2019 AUTO SHOW "Last year, 361,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles were sold in the United States, just 2 percent of car purchases, according to estimates by InsideEVs.com. Tesla, which has struggled with production and delivery problems, accounted for half of those sales." reports The New York Times today. And with the 2019 Detroit Auto Show starting today for trade, with public days later this week, expect a lot of talk about EVs. "Automakers are preparing to introduce dozens of fully electric cars and plug-in hybrid vehicles over the next three years, and Hyundai, Kia, Mini, Nissan and Audi will display electric models due in the United States this year. It is a gambit based on the idea that many mainstream car owners will rush to make the leap from gasoline. But to sell all those cars, the manufacturers have to attract a new class of customer." https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/13/business/detroit-auto-show-electric-cars.html FORD PROMISE A ‘BIG SURPRISE’ "Ford Motor is gearing up to launch new electric cars as soon as next year, CEO Jim Hackett told CNBC on Sunday. Ford has previously announced its plans to invest $11 billion in electric vehicles by 2022 and produce 40 hybrid and fully electric cars, in a plan to revive its slowing business. However, the company's chief told CNBC that drivers should be prepared for 'a big surprise' from Ford." He told CNBC: "We talked about a huge investment in electric vehicles. We have 16 models that are in design and development. We have a pretty big surprise coming next year." https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/13/ford-ceo-says-a-big-surprise-coming-next-year-with-electric-vehicles.html NISSAN IMS CONCEPT DEBUTS AT THE DETROIT MOTOR SHOW "Nissan has revealed the IMs concept at this year’s Detroit Motor Show. Designed as an all-electric “elevated sports sedan,” it blends luxury saloon packaging with crossover styling." says AutoExpress: "Powered by two electric motors, the all-wheel-drive IMs concept produces a claimed 476bhp and 800Nm of torque. The motors are fed by a 115kWh battery pack, which Nissan says will provide a range of 380 miles on a single charge. To maximise interior space, Nissan tucked its drivetrain components under the chassis, creating a completely flat cabin floor. The front two seats can also swivel to face the rear bench, due to the absent centre console." https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/nissan/105684/nissan-ims-concept-debuts-at-the-detroit-motor-show AUDI PB18 E-TRON LIMITED TO 50 UNITS? "As it’s often the case with concept cars, the Audi PB18 e-tron is expected to go make the jump to series production. But there's a catch that must be highlighted. According to Autoweek Netherlands, the four-ringed automaker is planning 50 examples of the breed." according to AutoEvolution: "For starters, Audi isn’t the type of automaker who limits production to 50 units, even if we’re talking about a wild-looking, all-electric supercar. It would make more sense to up the production run to 500 or 1,000 examples, especially from a financial standpoint. The PB18 e-tron neither has the skills to take on Tesla’s second-generation roadster despite the three-motor setup, 95-kWh battery, and fast-charging capability." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/audi-pb18-e-tron-limited-to-50-units-131593.html SEAMLESS EV CHARGING IS CATCHING ON IN NORTH AMERICA "Two of North America’s largest charging networks, Greenlots and ChargePoint, recently formed a roaming partnership that will enable charging across both networks. Beginning in mid-2019, customers will be able to charge on either the ChargePoint or Greenlots networks without the need to create separate accounts" says InsideEVs in an EVANNEX article today. Lin-Zhuang Khoo, Senior VP, Greenlots: "his once-fragmented industry is building momentum towards true driver interoperability thanks to adoption of standards like OCPI that are beneficial to drivers, automakers, grid operators and charging infrastructure providers. What’s particularly encouraging about this positive trend is that it is happening in advance of major policy changes or other external forces – a sign that the EV charging market is maturing in concert with surging customer demand for EVs." https://insideevs.com/seamless-ev-charging-north-america/ SOLAR + STORAGE HALF THE COST OF GAS PEAKER PLANTS One of your must-read websites is CleanTechnica, and a new article from Steve Hanley today is less about EVs but more about how we power them. "S&P Global reports the cost of solar with battery backup dropped precipitously in 2018. In a few cases in the sunny Southwest region of the United States, several tenders for solar plus storage came in at under $30 per megawatt-hour last year. Stand alone prices for installed battery storage — based on a 20 megawatt-hour system with 4 hours of storage — dropped 40% from the previous year to $357 per kilowatt-hour and are expected to keep falling. Bloomberg New Energy Finance projects a further 52% reduction by 2030." "Some CleanTechnica readers have been wondering why Kia and Hyundai have such low production targets for their newest EV offerings. The clamor for battery cells to meet the energy storage demand may be part of the reason for those low numbers.” https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/13/solar-storage-half-the-cost-of-gas-peaker-plants-8minuteenergy/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
