In this episode of "Connected World" podcast, hosted by Michelle Dawn Mooney and brought to you by TE Connectivity, the discussion centers on the rapid shift in automotive technology towards software-defined vehicles (SDVs). This evolution is marked by a change in consumer preferences, moving away from traditional metrics like horsepower and acceleration to prioritizing comfort, connectivity, safety, and sustainability. Rudi Ostermann, VP and CTO for Global Automotive at TE Connectivity, sheds light on how these changes are influencing vehicle design and the automotive industry overall, particularly in response to recent trends observed at the Shanghai Motor Show.Main Points of Conversation:1. The shift in consumer behavior towards valuing software-defined features like connectivity, safety, and upgradability over traditional vehicle performance metrics.2. The transition from subsystem-based vehicle design to a more integrated, software-centric approach, which is reshaping vehicle architecture and component requirements.3. Challenges and opportunities in the design and production of SDVs, focusing on reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and the need for advanced electronics and circuitry.Guest Bio: Rudi Ostermann has dedicated his career to the automotive industry, working with major OEMs for several decades, including the last nine years at TE Connectivity. His insights are grounded in a deep understanding of the industry's evolution and emerging trends.

NEW NEW CAR NEWSDue to the Shanghai Motor Show taking place this week and that being the first mass gathering of manufactuers, in the world, for over a year, news is thing on the ground. This week we’ve moved the New New Car News segment to the first part of the show, as a result. DS 9 - DS announced their new flagship model, the DS 9, a premium saloon, which has a very DS interior that the chaps are all excited to see. The external looks are less dramatic but still handsome. However, they do wonder who in the UK may buy such a car. To read more about it, click the Automotive Management article here. Toyota bZ4X Concept - Toyota has revealed their first every purely battery electric concept, which is a sporty looking SUV, that shows it is different whilst still obviously a Toyota. The driver is in for a real treat in this thinly disguised production ready model, as they has a new design wheel, drive-by-wire system and display binnacle. To read more, click here for the Toyota press release. Nissan X-TRAIL - The next generation X-TRAIL has been revealed by Nissan. Externally it continues the brand design language that we’ve seen on the latest Juke and Quashqai. There are some incredibly impressive technical features to this vehicle, but one price is the weight due to the amount of batteries required to allow for a 711km range. Much is made of the quietness within the cabin, as this is the EV equivalent of the S Class, just how quiet can it be? To find out more, click here for the Mercedes press release. Geely - As the Shanghai Motor Show is a home show, Geely was ut in force with many of the group’s brands attending. The new plug-in hybrid version of the Lynk & Co 05 and the Volvo XC40 were shown. But also they made announcements which were interesting. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. EV-BATTERY RIVALS RACE THE CLOCK TO SWAY BIDEN ON IMPORT BAN "Two of the world’s largest electric-vehicle battery makers have hired top Washington insiders to hold near-daily meetings with the Biden administration in a battle that could affect the electrification plans of Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG." says Bloomberg's Hyperdrive: "SK Innovation Co., Ford’s battery supplier for its upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck, faces a 10-year U.S. import ban on its Korean-made batteries and components after April 11. LG Energy Solution Co., which won the order against its rival from the U.S. International Trade Commission for what the agency said was an “extraordinary” effort to destroy evidence in a trade secrets battle, has also brought in hired guns to influence the Biden team. Meetings are being held with at least a dozen agencies, including officials at Labor, Transportation and Energy. Talks, conducted over the internet because of the Covid-19 pandemic, have focused on “climate change, electrification of vehicles, the Ford F-150 and jobs. Biden has until April 11 to intervene. Presidential vetoes, known formally as “disapprovals,” of ITC import bans are rare. Both South Korean battery makers are building plants in the U.S. that would employ thousands of American workers. At the same time, Biden can’t be seen as wavering on intellectual property protection considering the long-standing U.S. dispute with China over the issue." This affects cells for Ford F-150, VW's ID.4 which is allowed to use them for two years. VW, at least to me, appear to be pulling away from the Korean battery makers regardless of what happens in favour of European and CHinese cells. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-04-06/ev-battery-rivals-sk-lg-race-clock-to-sway-biden-on-import-ban TESLA INTRODUCES 50% SUPERCHARGING DISCOUNT "Tesla is introducing a new 50% discount for Supercharging during the night at Supercharger stations in metro areas in California. It’s the automaker’s latest move to help with network capacity." says electrek: "Several California-based Tesla owners are reporting having received this message in their in-app notifications: "Avoid the rush and save 50% on your charging fees before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m. at all Superchargers in California’s major metro areas. For specific rates and eligible sites, tap the Supercharger map pin on your in-car touchscreen." The focus on urban Supercharger stations appears to aim to incentivize Tesla owners who regularly use Superchargers as their main way of charging, mainly for apartment dwellers who might have difficulty getting home charging, to charge at night in order to reduce daytime usage and wait times" https://electrek.co/2021/04/05/tesla-isupercharging-discount-night-california-help-capacity/ TOYOTA BZ BADGE REVEALED "Toyota has revealed a glimpse of the badge and branding its upcoming BZ all-electric SUV will wear in new trademarks filed by the brand. The Japanese company’s new BZ is a mid-sized rival for the Volkswagen ID.4 and Kia e-Niro electric SUVs and is set to be unveiled at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show." says AutoExpress: "Toyota confirmed the EV’s existence last year and, over the past 12 months, it has repeatedly told us that the BZ badge was nothing more than an internal placeholder name. However, this trademark application is the first indication we’ve had on the production car’s nameplate. Although it won’t be Toyota’s first pure-electric car, the BZ marks an important turning point in the company’s electrification strategy which, until now, has prioritised hybrid, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. After months of silence, Toyota’s most recent trademark application suggests the finished SUV will indeed carry the BZ nameplate. The brand has also spent much of the past year registering trademarks for a “BZ Series,” claiming everything from BZ1 to BZ5." BZ = Beyond Zero https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/toyota/353801/new-electric-toyota-bz-badge-revealed-patent-drawing AUDI Q4 E-TRON REVEAL ON APRIL 14 "The Audi Q4 E-Tron is almost upon us, with its debut set on April 14, 2021. We've known for a while that there will be two flavors for the luxurious VW ID.4, confirmed by the Q4 E-Torn Sportback Concept that was introduced last year and the several spy shots that surfaced online. It was believed that the more conventional upright rear will arrive first, while the swoopy Sportback launching later. But Audi's latest teaser on Facebook tells us otherwise as both models are arriving on April 14, 2021." according to Motor1: "As an all-electric model and a luxury model at that, you shouldn't be surprised that the Q4 E-Tron comes with a tech-laden cabin. It comes with Audi's signature Virtual Cockpit with a standard 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen. An 11.6-inch touchscreen will be offered as an option, which will be the largest screen real-estate in an Audi when it's launched." https://www.motor1.com/news/498653/audi-q4-etron-sportback-april-14/ CHINESE-MARKET NIO ES6 SPOTTED WITHOUT CAMOUFLAGE IN CALIFORNIA "Right now, NIO is only selling its five-seater ES6 SUV to its home base: China. But it turns out that one has been spotted in South Bay, an area hear San Jose, California, without camouflage. Richard Chen posted the moment a friend captured on Twitter via three photos—and, interestingly, someone in the comments claimed to have seen a gray version on the streets as well." according to Jalopnik: "NIO does have a North American base located in San Jose, California, but it’s a little surprising to see one of its cars actually tooling around on the road because no one has really pegged the company as being close to American distribution. Is the EV company soldiering through its darkest days, spurred on by big dreams of American distribution? Is someone just taking the cars for a last joy ride? Only time will tell." https://jalopnik.com/chinese-market-nio-es6-spotted-without-camouflage-in-lo-1846615268 CAR PARK WITH DOZENS OF HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 "Despite the components shortage, the production of Hyundai Ioniq 5 has started in Ulsan factory in March and continues into April, at a lower rate than initially planned. Here is a very short video, recorded on April 4 in South Korea, that presents a parking lot with probably dozens of brand new Ioniq 5, ready for shipping." says InsideEVs: "It's great to see that Hyundai is at this stage already and possibly soon will send the first batch of cars to Europe, as well as to South Korean dealers. Those are the first two major markets. In South Korea, the first Ioniq 5 are spotted pretty regularly (the customer deliveries to start this quarter. To support the ro lout, Hyundai Motor Group is building a new network of ultra-fast charging stations in Korea. In Europe the company has simply joined the IONITY network." https://insideevs.com/news/499059/hyundai-ioniq-5-parking-korea/ DACIA SPRING VS COMPETITION "The affordable EV now sold in Europe had its range tested by the French magazine L’Automobile against three other competitors: the Renault Twingo Electric, the Volkswagen e-Up!, and the Renault ZOE R110. L’Automobile measured their ranges in the urban, road, and mixed cycles. If it ran only in city streets, the Dacia Spring would achieve an energy efficiency superior to that offered by the Lucid Air or the Mercedes-Benz EQS. The A-segment hatchback gets 5.3 mi/kWh" says INsideEVs: "For its 26.8 kWh battery pack, what helps is the low weight of only 960 kilograms. The Renault Twingo Electric weighs 1,518 kg. The Volkswagen e-Up! did a better job keeping the mass low – 1,160 kg. Although the French magazine tests reveal how disappointing the Dacia Spring performance is, it also demonstrates that it does a fantastic job at spending little energy and getting the most of what its battery pack can offer in the city" The Zoe weighs 1,468 kg. https://insideevs.com/features/498558/dacia-spring-less-weight-efficiency/ THE NEXT ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY CHAMPION COULD BE EUROPEAN "With Europe expected to lead the world in electric car sales for a second straight year, an epic rush to build a battery supply chain from scratch is playing out across the continent." writes the South China Morning Post: "Fuelled by state support of at least 6.1 billion euros (US$7.3 billion) and investment plans totalling 10 times that in just one year, the race is on for a regional champion to emerge. The contestants include start-ups Northvolt in Sweden, Britishvolt and France’s Automotive Cells Co, and powerhouses Tesla and Volkswagen. BloombergNEF estimates the continent could see its share of global battery production rise to 31 per cent by 2030 from just 7 per cent last year. Traditional car-making countries Germany, France, Italy and the UK are especially keen to stay competitive in battery technology and maintain their manufacturing bases." https://www.scmp.com/tech/big-tech/article/3128346/next-electric-car-battery-champion-could-be-european-rivalling-giant STELLANTIS PLANS TO TRIPLE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES "Stellantis is looking at nearly tripling its global sales of electric vehicles this year, the head of holding company Exor, the carmaker’s main shareholder, said on Thursday." to Reuters: "The world’s fourth largest carmaker targets global sales of 400,000 high voltage vehicles this year from 139,000 in 2020 thanks to the launch of 11 additional models, John Elkann, who also serves as Stellantis chairman, said in a letter to Exor shareholders. Stellantis, formed in January by merging Italian-American Fiat Chrysler and France’s PSA, wants to exploit its size to take on rivals in the race to produce more electric vehicles." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-stellantis-electric/stellantis-plans-to-triple-electric-vehicle-sales-in-2021-elkann-idUSKBN2BO551 QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM What EV do you want to see your favourite car maker launch which they haven’t already? Unlike the outgoing model co-developed with Peugeot and Citroën, the new Aygo is an all-Toyota affair, with no 108 and C1 sister models planned as the French are exiting this segment. Although there was a lot of speculation as to whether the Aygo X would go fully electric, it seems (notoriously stubborn) Toyota dodged another EV potential with no mention as to what will power its beautiful shell. Toyota is also teasing its first battery-electric SUV ahead of the planned unveiling at the Shanghai Motor Show next month.Toyota Aygo X Prologue website ➜ https://t2m.io/AygoX#Toyota #EV #AygoX~Toyota Aygo X EV | Did Toyota Finally Reveal It's Fully Electric Car?~⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺Get the latest restaurant and hospitality insider tips and education on saving your restaurant business in our FREE Virtual Event Platform
Show #624 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 28th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. TESLA TO UNLOCK EXTENDED RANGE FOR WILDFIRES "Tesla owners living in areas affected by the ongoing CA wildfires will be able to tap into the maximum range offered by their vehicles, even if they purchased trims that feature a software-limited battery pack. The update was confirmed by CEO Elon Musk on Twitter Monday morning." says Simon at Teslarati: " owners of electric cars such as the Model S 40, Model S 60, and Model S 70 will be able to gain extra range for their electric cars. This is made possible by Tesla equipping the vehicles with a larger battery pack that is software-locked. The Model S 40, for example, is equipped with a 60 kWh battery that’s software-limited to 40 kWh. Tesla is yet to confirm if the Standard Range Model 3 will also have its full battery capacity unlocked. Musk’s recent tweet seems to confirm that free unlimited Supercharging will also be enabled for owners in areas that are affected by the ongoing CA wildfires. " https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-range-upgrade-ca-wildfires-elon-musk/ TESLA CUTS PRICE OF SOLAR AND POWERWALL INSTALLATIONS FOR PEOPLE AFFECTED BY WILDFIRES "Elon Musk says that Tesla is focusing installations for people affected by the California wildfires: “Apologies to those waiting for Solar/Powerwall outside California, as we are prioritizing those affected by wildfires.” The CEO even said that they are offering $1,000 discounts to them" according to Electrek: "Musk has especially been talking about the capacity to avoid power outages by combining solar power with Powerwall battery packs. The CEO says that Tesla Energy is becoming a distributed global utility and it could outgrow its automotive business." GENERAL MOTORS SIDES WITH TRUMP "General Motors, Fiat Chrysler and Toyota say the reason they’re backing the Trump administration in its assault on California’s decades-old campaign to reduce auto emissions is to avoid fragmenting the industry in search of a single national environmental standard." reports The LA TImes: " Those companies and the coalition, which includes such other manufacturers as Subaru, Hyundai, Mazda and Nissan, filed a brief for the defense — that is, the Trump administration — in a lawsuit challenging its effort to roll back existing auto emission and mileage standards." https://www.latimes.com/business/story/2019-10-29/automakers-trump-emissions MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR PRICES FOR US MARKET "MINI was one of the first auto manufacturers to offer a battery electric version of a production car. In 2009, it began leasing its MINI E, a modified version of the popular MINI Cooper, in selected US markets. That car had an EPA range of 100 miles" according to Steve Hanley for CleanTechnica: "Now the battery electric MINI Cooper SE is ready for its debut in world markets and the company has just announced its starting price in the US will be $29,900 plus $850 shipping and handling. The first cars will reach dealers in America in March of 2020. With federal, state, and local incentives, a new MINI Cooper SE could cost as little as $17,900 and come with special privileges such as access to HOV lanes during commuting hours." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-prices-for-us-market-announced/ MINI COOPER SE ELECTRIC CAR STARTS AS LOW AS $17,900 Meanwhile electrek notes: "When BMW unveiled the production version of the electric Mini Cooper SE earlier this year, some people were disappointed by the fact that the vehicle was based on the older BMW i3 electric platform. It’s equipped with the i3’s older 32.6 kWh battery pack, which Mini says is good for a range of 235 to 270 km (146-168 miles) based on the WLTP cycle. It means closer to 130 miles on the EPA cycle. The battery pack is limited to 50 kW DC fast-charging and it feeds a 135 kW/184 hp motor." https://electrek.co/2019/10/28/mini-cooper-se-electric-car-price-us/ RENAULT’S K-ZE OFFERED CHINA HEADS TO EUROPE "Renault is planning a modified version of the City K-ZE small electric car offered at competitive prices in China for the European market. However, the price for Europe is still unclear, as is the brand under which the K-ZE will be sold in Europe." says Electrive: " it is most likely that the European version of the City K-ZE will be offered by the Renault brand Dacia. Renault presented the K-ZE at the Shanghai Motor Show in April, and the car has been on sale since September for 61,800 yuan, the equivalent of just under 7,900 euros. It has an engine power of 33 kW, a torque of 125 Nm and a 26.8 kWh rechargeable battery" https://www.electrive.com/2019/10/28/renaults-k-ze-offered-china-heads-to-europe/ WORLD’S LARGEST STORAGE BATTERY — 2.5 GWH A site on Vernon Avenue in Queens, New York, once was home to 16 gas powered peaker plants. Only 2 remain in operation today. Soon, all of them will be demolished to make room for a 316 MW/2528 MWh storage battery that will be the largest in the world. The proposal to build the new facility was approved last week by the New York Public Service Commission." reports CleanTechnica: "The proposed storage project will consist of 136 battery storage and inverter units, 64 of which will be double stacked on the property." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/28/worlds-largest-storage-battery-2-5-gwh-to-replace-gas-peaker-plants-in-queens/ FORD OF EUROPE PILOTING GEOFENCING AND BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY "Ford is extending its European plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) trial to Cologne. The study, which is also testing Ford PHEVs on the streets of London and Valencia, Spain, aims to better analyse and show the real-world benefits of such vehicles for the environment and for commercial vehicle owners and operators." says Green Car Congress: "Each of the 10 PHEVs in the 12-month Cologne trial features the FordPass Connect on-board cellular modem, and a plug-in device which enables the geofencing and blockchain capabilities. Whenever a trial vehicle enters a controlled zone, its electric-drive mode is triggered and the zero-emission driving green miles are documented. The emissions mode and time that vehicles enter or leave a controlled zone are recorded to a secure distributed ledger—a blockchain—ensuring emissions data is safely stored and shared among relevant parties including city authorities and the vehicle or fleet owners." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2019/10/20191028-ford.html THE FIRST GAS STATION TO CONVERT TO AN EV-CHARGING STATION IN AMERICA From Jalopnik: "About a month ago, RS Automotive opened in Takoma Park, Maryland, as the first U.S. gas station that’s been converted fully to an EV charging station, reports NPR. Its owner, Depeswar Doley, has kept the station looking largely the same as a regular gas station, so sometimes there’s confusion from drivers who pull up with their internal combustion engine cars, looking to fill up." “A lot of them pull up and get upset” https://jalopnik.com/this-is-the-first-gas-station-to-convert-to-an-ev-charg-1839412347 QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… Set by listener Martin Young: “What were some of your biggest surprises about living with a BEV?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 256 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future. Show #445 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 16th April 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ANDERS HOVE – PATREON EXECUTIVE PRODUCER: “I was listening this morning to your guesses about the pronunciation of AI.ME. Since the concept was released at the Shanghai auto show, and could be intended for China, this is probably a play on words, since "ai" is the verb "to love." It'S pronounced the same as "aye" in "aye aye, captain." So "aye ... me.". Reasons to have Sentry Mode: An email from Brian Thompson. “Willie Singletary, Council Candidate Hits Tesla Model 3 with Escalade and leaves scene.” AUTO SHANGHAI 2019: THE ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOOK FORWARD TO "it's no surprise that the Auto Shanghai 2019, which begins on April 16, will have more EVs and EV concepts on display than you can point a finger at. Here's some of the ones that we think will stand out." says Overdrive.in. Their picks are: Possibly of most interest to us is the production version of the Renault K-ZE. As the looks suggest, this will be the electric version of the Renault Kwid. It will be based on a heavily modified version of the Kwid's CMF-A platform and will have a 250 km range. The Buick Velite 6 is a heavily revised version of the second generation Chevrolet Volt. The PHEV version debut first and be powered by the same 1.5 litre petrol motor and 18.4 kWh battery pack. The full EV version is expected to have a 85 kW motor with a claimed range of 291 km." They also rate the NIO EP7 performance sedan, the Audi Q2 etron which is like an electric A2 for China only, the Aston Martin Rapide E and the Geely GE 11 - "the first global model from Geely's newly-created EV brand "Geely New Energy". Internationally it will be available under the Geometry brand. " http://overdrive.in/news-cars-auto/auto-shanghai-2019-the-electric-vehicles-to-look-forward-to/ RENAULT KWID EV (CITY K-ZE) REVEALED AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "Renault has showcased the production version of the Kwid EV at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show. The EV is based on the same CMF-A platform as the Kwid, albeit with a few modifications to accommodate batteries and an electric motor. However the specifications of the same haven't been revealed yet." reports ZigWheels: "while it has not been officially revealed, the City K-ZE will have an approximate range close to 250Km. Inside, the cabin remains largely similar to the Kwid with a functional setup. Key highlights include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which also gets online navigation, real time monitoring for EV features, 4G WiFi and voice recognition. the Renault City K-ZE packs PM2.5 sensors and an air quality control system, which evaluates cabin air quality and switches between interior and exterior air circulation automatically. It also gets features like a rear camera and a tyre pressure monitoring system." https://www.zigwheels.com/news-features/news/renault-kwid-ev-city-kze-revealed-at-shanghai-motor-show/33576/ NEW NIO ET PREVIEW ELECTRIC CAR REVEALED IN SHANGHAI "At the Auto Shanghai 2019, Chinese EV startup NIO showed off its all new sedan product lineup with the ET Preview and exhibited its entire NIO Power service solution as well as some cutting-edge technologies such as the 220kW permanent magnet synchronous motor electric drivetrain." reports Gasgoo for InsideEVs.com "The EV maker also showcased such products as the high-performance electric flagship ES8 SUV; the high-performance long-range, intelligent electric ES6 SUV; the ultrafast electric car, the EP9; the NIO EVE Vision car and NIO Formula E Team car, the NIO 004." https://insideevs.com/new-nio-et-preview-electric-car-revealed/ KARMA DEBUTS BEAUTIFUL PININFARINA DESIGNED ELECTRIC COUPE "Aside from the Karma Revero GT (yes, it’s an updated variant of the Fisker Karma from 2016) which is a production vehicle going on sale soon, Karma Automotive has an interesting two-door concept debuting at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. The so-called Pininfarina GT is based on the Revero GT and, as its name suggests, has been designed by Pininfarina." according to Anthony Karr from Motor1.com: "The official press release says this is the “first result of a partnership with Pininfarina, the iconic Italian design and engineering house,” which hints at potential future products developed in cooperation between the two companies. While the coupe has the exterior dimensions of the Revero GT, the overall appearance is sportier thanks to the shorter rear overhang and the long hood. We believe the two-door vehicle has the same powertrain as the Revero GT, which means there’s a BMW-sourced 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine, an onboard electric generator, and two electric motors for a combined output of 535 horsepower (399 kilowatts) and 550 pound-feet (746 lb-ft) of torque." https://insideevs.com/karma-debuts-pininfarina-electric-coupe/ ELECTRA MECCANICA SHIPS SOLO FROM CHINA TO NORTH AMERICA "Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker, Electra Meccanica Vehicle, has signed a contract with Crane Worldwide Logistics to move its single-passenger, three-wheel Solo model from its assembly plant in Chongqing to the ports of Los Angeles in the US and Vancouver, Canada." according to the website Automotive Logistics: "Electra Meccanica is currently ramping up mass production of its Solo electric vehicle at its Chongqing manufacturing facility in China for delivery to customers there and abroad in 2019. According to official figures from the EV maker it has 64,000 pre-orders on its books." https://automotivelogistics.media/news/157291 HYUNDAI & H2E: 1,600 FUEL CELL TRUCKS FOR EUROPE "Hyundai and the Swiss company H2 Energy (H2E) have confirmed their commitment to establishing a joint venture called Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. The JV’s first goal is to open up the European hydrogen mobility ecosystem with fuel cell trucks." writes Carrie Hamel for electrive.com: "Hyundai will supply a total of 1,600 fuel cell-powered heavy trucks to Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility from 2019 to 2025 – 600 more than originally announced in a memorandum of understanding signed in 2018 between H2E and Hyundai. The Swiss company H2E specialises in the production and supply of renewable hydrogen in Switzerland with subsidiaries in Germany, Norway and Austria and they will be responsible for marketing the fleet." https://www.electrive.com/2019/04/15/hyundai-h2e-1600-fuel-cell-trucks-for-european-market/ MINI SURVEY CLAIMS CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY WITH 75 MILES OF EV RANGE "In this survey from MINI USA, the brand asked 1,004 adults over the age of 18 (502 men and 502 women) a series of questions to determine what a necessary average range. While the questions asked were not disclosed to us, the brand claims that a resulting average range of 75 miles was deemed “sufficient”." says BMW blog: "MINI also learned from this survey that the majority of customers find EVs to be best used in city driving or for commuting. The latter of which is assuming it’s a relatively short commute. This information is likely to factor into the size of battery packs used in upcoming EV MINIs. The first one to come is the upcoming MINI E, which is said to use the same 42.2 kWh battery pack as the BMW i3 and get around 120 miles of range." https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/04/15/mini-survey-claims-customers-are-happy-with-75-miles-of-ev-range/ TESLA'S CONSTANT PRICE CHANGES FRUSTRATE BUYERS "Last week, Tesla changed the prices on their cars again. In just the last few months there have been a huge number of price changes, particularly on the Model 3" says a Forbes article which goes on to track every price change since, a 12 point list which follows the changing face of Autopilot and the $35,000 Model 3 which came and (partially) went. It's a toughtful article by Brad Templeton and talks about buyers remorse, how cellphones have been commodotised. "Elon Musk has had a few things to say about this. First, he points out that prices on other maker's cars fluctuate all the time due to specials, dealer rebates, and plain old negotiation. He says Tesla is just doing it transparently and should not be blamed for doing the right thing. There is some merit to this, but the fact that somebody can get $3,000 off a car by negotiating at the dealer does not affect the price of existing cars nearly as much. He also points out that Teslas, unlike other cars before them, keep getting new features with software updates, which are given to all owners whose cars can handle them." https://www.forbes.com/sites/bradtempleton/2019/04/15/teslas-constant-price-changes-frustrate-buyers-even-more-is-likely-as-cars-become-computers/#6bba873e5da9 TOYOTA SELLS ELECTRIC CAR TECHNOLOGY TO CHINESE STARTUP IN RETURN FOR GREEN CAR CREDITS "Toyota has agreed to sell its electric car technology to Chinese startup Singulato, in a move which will give it preferential rights to buy green credits under China’s new quota system for electric vehicles (EVs)." according to City AM newspaper: "The green car credit system, introduced in January, requires a significant portion of car makers’ production or imports in China must be electric or hybrid. Those that do not meet the quota themselves can purchase credits from rivals that exceed it, but if they do not have enough credits they face government fines for their operations in China. Singulato is developing a mini EV which it hopes to release later this year. This will generate credits for the startup, some of which Toyota will then purchase. Toyota has already said that initially it won’t be able to meet its quotas without buying credits from others." http://www.cityam.com/276295/toyota-sells-electric-car-technology-chinese-startup-return CHEVY BOLT EUV NAME TRADEMARKED, ELECTRIC CROSSOVER COMING? "An interesting patent filing by General Motors hints the upcoming second electric vehicle from the automaker could be a high-riding machine. First unearthed by GM Authority, the Bolt EUV moniker has been trademarked by GM earlier this month and will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” says Motor1.com today: "As GM Authority reports, the name is probably going to be used for Chevrolet’s next Bolt-based EV. In March this year, the American manufacturer confirmed it will build the all-electric car at its Orion facility where the Bolt is currently produced. A new $300-million investment in the factory was also confirmed and a plan for approximately 400 new jobs at the site." https://www.motor1.com/news/344658/chevrolet-bolt-euv-trademark-rumors/ WHY TESLA DEFINES AMERICAN LUXURY, NOT CADILLAC OR LINCOLN "Americans are at our best when we look forward instead of at what others are doing. Cadillac and Lincoln used to epitomize this idea." says MotorTrend: "While Cadillac has spent the past three decades copying BMW's homework, and Lincoln spent the same time building cost-cut, rebadged Fords and Mercurys, the soul of American luxury escaped Detroit. Today, it has settled in sunny California. Tesla's tech and engineering is class leading, and delivers benchmark EV performance and range. And the vehicles are (relatively) expensive, requiring early adopters to be of a certain socio-economic status. They have become part of the fabric of today's luxury consumer society, a car many buyers of mainstream automobiles now aspire to own because of what it would say about their own status. Tesla is therefore a genuine modern luxury brand." https://www.motortrend.com/news/why-tesla-defines-american-luxury-not-cadillac-lincoln/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Show #444 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 15th April 2019. Hello to new Patreon PRODUCER MARTIN HORNER VOLKSWAGEN PUSHES BATTERY PARTNERS TO BUILD GIGAFACTORIES "Volkswagen is pushing its joint venture partners including SK Innovation (SKI) to build electric car battery plants which have at least one Gigawatt manufacturing capacity, Chief Executive Herbert Diess told Reuters." in a report today: "Volkswagen will buy 50 billion euros ($56.57 billion) worth of battery cells for electric cars and has identified South Korea’s SKI, LG Chem and Samsung SDI as strategic battery cell suppliers as well as China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL)." https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-autoshow-shanghai-vw/volkswagen-pushes-battery-partners-to-build-gigafactories-idUKKCN1RR09A?utm_source=applenews PORSCHE JAPAN SELECTS ABB TO BUILD CHADEMO INFRASTRUCTURE FOR TAYCAN "ABB announced that it was selected by Porsche Japan for a joint development project of next-generation EV chargers for the Japanese market" says InsideEVs today: "According to the press release, the two will develop a “dedicated high-power charger” with power output exceeding 150 kW." From the press release: "“ABB has entered into an agreement to deliver its market-leading electric vehicle infrastructure for Porsche Japan’s EVs, including Taycan, the automaker’s first fully electric car, set to enter the Japanese market in 2020. Under the terms, Porsche Japan will install ABB’s high-power chargers at Porsche Centers and public facilities across the country, creating a network of fast chargers for its electric vehicles. The first installation is set to go live in mid-2020." https://insideevs.com/porsche-japan-chademo-charging-infrastructure/ AUDI AI:ME UNVEILED AS REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE EV FOR THE CITY" "The Volkswagen I.D. Roomzz isn’t the only new fully electric concept VAG is introducing at the Auto Shanghai 2019 in China as Audi is also attending the event to showcase the new AI:ME. Sending out a futuristic A2 vibe, the new showcar carrying the Four Rings takes the shape of a compact zero-emissions hatchback developed primarily for city use." reports Adrian Padeanu for Motor1.com: "Audi believes an equivalent production version would mostly travel at speeds between 20 and 70 kph (12 to 43 mph) over short distances. With that in mind, the AI:ME was conceived with a simple hardware configuration encompassing a 65-kWh battery pack ideal for city use, although the actual range isn’t specified. The design is as futuristic as you’d expect from a concept, complete with rear suicide doors and the absence of conventional B-pillars. Intricate LED headlights and taillights lend the electric hatch a high-tech look, while the use of real plants inside the minimalistic cabin is a first in an automobile, according to Audi. Not that it comes as a big surprise, but the AI:ME has been envisioned with a highly advanced autonomous driving system with level 4 capabilities." https://www.motor1.com/news/344623/audi-ai-me-concept-revealed/ DUBAI POLICE UNVEIL NEW FLEET OF ELECTRIC CARS "Police in Dubai are going green with their new eco-friendly fleet of electric patrol cars to support the emirate's sustainability drive. Dubai Police officers will be getting behind the wheel of 13 Renault Zoe electric cars, secured from Arabian Automobiles." according to TheNational.ae: "Dubai Police is not the only state service helping to protect the planet. In February, Dubai Corporation of Ambulance Services unveiled the Zero DS, which produces no heat, vibration or fumes. The ambulance service said the emergency vehicle would be used for rapid intervention and immediate response situations." https://www.thenational.ae/uae/environment/dubai-police-unveil-new-fleet-of-electric-cars-1.849076 TESLA DELIVERS FIRST $35,000 MODEL 3S TO A HAPPY FEW CUSTOMERS "Tesla has started deliveries of the long-promised Model 3 for $35,000 to a happy few customers, but the delivery of the promised vehicle is expected to be short lived." says Fred at Electrek today: "After Tesla announced that it is moving away from the promised base version of Model 3 at $35,000 last week, the automaker confirmed that it would start deliveries this weekend with a software-locked version of the Model 3 Standard Range Plus. Now several buyers have reached out to Electrek to confirm that they have taken delivery of the ‘Model 3 Standard Range’. The vehicle is virtually identical to the more expensive Standard Range Plus version of the Model 3 except that Tesla has software-locked the battery pack at 90% of its capacity and disabled some features like “onboard music streaming service, navigation with live traffic visualization, and heated seats.” https://electrek.co/2019/04/15/tesla-delivers-35000-model-3/ PURE ELECTRIC VEHICLES ENTER PHASE OF FASTEST GROWTH REPORT CLAIMS A series of new reports from IDTechEx Research says the electric vehicles have officially entered their fastest phase of growth. While good news, it isn't too unexpected. Rapid improvements in technology have expanded the electric vehicle market in so many ways." Battery costs have dropped whilst their range and efficiency have increased. At the same time, governments across the world are embracing policies that emphasis no carbon emission transport. One of the studies by the independent market research company examines the rise of electric buses across the globe." https://interestingengineering.com/pure-electric-vehicles-enter-phase-of-fastest-growth-report-claims ELON MUSK SAYS TESLA IS “VASTLY AHEAD” ON SELF-DRIVING "Tesla is less than two years away from full self-driving, CEO Elon Musk said in an interview with MIT researcher Lex Fridman published on Friday. And he said Tesla was far ahead of other companies working on self-driving technology." according to Ars Technica article today: "Musk told Fridman that Tesla customers would need to keep their hands on the wheel "for at least six months or something like that." But he predicted that soon—"maybe even toward the end of this year, I'd be shocked if it's not next year at the latest"—Tesla's self-driving technology will become so good that "having a human intervene will decrease safety." https://arstechnica.com/cars/2019/04/elon-musk-says-tesla-is-vastly-ahead-on-self-driving/ LOTUS TO UNVEIL £1M+ ELECTRIC HYPERCAR AT SHANGHAI MOTOR SHOW "BRITISH car maker Lotus is set to pull the wraps off a £1m+ pure-electric hypercar at the Shanghai Motor Show later today." says the Sunday Times Driving: "The low-volume sports car’s £1m+ pure-electric performance model would sit at the top of the Lotus family tree, and go up against extreme supercars from Aston Martin and McLaren. The car would be fitted with electric motor and battery tech developed in partnership with the Williams F1 team’s Advanced Engineering division." https://www.driving.co.uk/news/lotus-unveil-1m-electric-hypercar-shanghai-motor-show/ COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
