Most of us have some idea what dementia is. Though we toss the word ‘demented' around as a put down, Dementia, and Alzheimers experienced up close is difficult to witness. In part why it is so difficult to watch others go through the decline is because much of it can be avoided entirely by adopting a Low Carb High Fat Ketogenic diet. If there was one specific condition that is most improved by ketones, this would be it. Picking up where Dr. Cunnane left off in part one, we get into other aspects of ketones and what we know about them specifically, brain health, and how the brain's ability to use ketones as a fuel does not diminish with age. Rather, it is our ability to use glucose as a fuel decreases. Due to the decreasing effectiveness of the insulin to get the glucose into the brain. Sometimes referred to as insulin resistance. The great news is ketones are not a problem and they are available. Coach Debbie shares a new research on fat oxidation rates for low carb endurance athletes in an article shared by Leighton Phillips from SFuels and more blogs from Dr. Dan Plews of EndureIQ program. What was most striking at first glance of the paper, was that the question of 'endurance performance' was tested at a very high intensity (@~85% vo2Max), shorter duration tests including 1mile, and 6 by 800m interval repeats. Traditional thought would consider such intensity-duration testing, as 'anaerobic' and by nature more dependent on carbohydrate oxidation, and less-so fat oxidation. But in a rigorous highly controlled testing protocol, and elegant research design, the team produced a set of findings that will certainly challenge traditional thinking. Bottom-line: ensure you pay attention to the guidance (above 3 points in blue) for an effective low-carb high-fat diet transition period - in realizing the intended metabolic shift, and performance outcomes of a low-carb lifestyle. In this study, a 2018 paper on cross-country skiers and our own lab observations of low-carb high-fat athletes, we are seeing more consistent references to high-fat oxidation rates (>1.5gr/min) at high intensities >80% Vo2Max. This is supportive of the suggestion, that such metabolic efficiency, could possibly provide a glycogen-sparing effect when fat can be utilized predominately for fuel at these intensities. It is an important note, that aside from the athletic performance outcomes, a number of health markers were also tested, and reference was made to the complications (pre-diabetes) that were associated with high-carb diet athletes. I guess from a balanced perspective, you would like to see more subjects in such a study, and also would like to have the study repeated for women. Nevertheless, the paper highlighted that prior studies that had less attention to study design controls (diet, fueling and training-load factors) drove different and non-repeatable findings. Study summarized 4 notable findings: 1) High-Carb athletes had no superior (high-intensity) performance over LCHF (low-carb high-fat) athletes, 2) Even at intensities at >85% Vo2Max, LCHF athletes were oxidizing fat at rates of 1.58gr/min (+/- 0.33gr/min). 3) LCHF athletes had higher HDL, LDL, and total cholesterol, 4) LCHF athletes, had reduced mean-median blood glucose levels. Conversely, 30% of the High-Carb athletes, had mean-median blood-glucose levels consistent with pre-diabetes. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Damon Sununtnasuk. He is the founder and CEO of the Sunt Group and Palmara Health which is previously named Nature Cure Labs. [03:36] Medium Chain Triglycerides and its Benefits in the Body Plant fats contain medium chain triglycerides, coconut oil is a common example. 90% of the fats in coconut oil are saturated fats in which 50% of these saturated fats are MCTs. The health benefits of MCTs have been studied over the years. Some people put it on their coffee, protein shakes, food and etc. When MCTs have been converted in the body, it becomes monolaurin. The three main types of MCTs are Capric, Caprylic, and Lauric Acid. They bring benefits to the body by giving immune support and regulation as well as an aid in ketosis. Damon is focusing on Lauric Acid as based on their research, it helps in immune, digestive, and inflammatory support. [11:33] Everything About Monolaurin: Role and Benefits in the Body Damon read a study about the use of Monolaurin to fight off Giardia Lamblia, one of the most common causes of malnutrition. One of the studies Damon has read used Monolaurin to try cure Giardia Lamblia on animal subjects in which the cure rates reached over 90%. On the other hand, Damon has also read another study wherein Monolaurin was used on the animal subjects first before giving Giardia Lamblia. 60% of the test subjects didn't get sick. Research shows that Monolaurin helps in breaking down the protective envelope of the DNA and RNA viruses. Breast milk contains 6.5% of Monolaurin. Monolaurin can be found on coconut oil and palm oil. However, palm oil can only be harvested on sensitive environments which can affect natural habitats which is why coconut oil is more preferred. [20:21] The Different Ways You Can Take Monolaurin Before taking any supplements, you must contact a health professional in order to determine the right dosage for you to take. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was. Picking up where Dr. Cunnane left off in part one, we get into other aspects of ketones and what we know about them specifically, brain health, and how the brain’s ability to use ketones as a fuel does not diminish with age. Welcome to the Super Simple Healthy Podcast! This is Christina Moyes. I’ve mentioned in previous episodes about the POWER of food. How food can have an effect on your mood, how fast your hair and nails grow, the glow of your skin, the clarity of your thoughts and of course, on your waistline. Today I’ll be sharing a couple of powerhouse foods that can actually help you shed pounds without dieting. Eat These, Lose Weight So what is all this about the POWER of food? After studying Nutrition at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition I realized that food is SO much more than something that alleviates the grumbling our stomachs. We are a part of the ecosystem on this Earth. And every plant on it is here to not just help us survive – but THRIVE! The nutrients in plants work together to nourish the cells in every animal and human so that we can all function to our highest potential. It’s all part of the cycle. When people do not receive those nutrients on a regular basis, the body starts to react and break down creating exhaustion, confusion and mood swings. I always tell my clients we are not calorie banks, but chemistry sets. Every ingredient has a purpose. Some help boost your metabolism, suppress appetite and stabilize blood sugar, all key elements in weight loss. Here are three foods that help you do just that: 1) Coconut Oil. Coconuts have shown up as the latest craze these past couple of years. It has multiple uses and benefits, but as far as weight loss is concerned here’s how Coconut Oil can help. Coconut oil has special fats called Medium Chain Triglycerides, or MCT’s. It has been shown that breaking down these types of healthy fats in the liver leads to more efficient burning of energy. And one study in 2009 found that women who consumed about 2 TBSP of coconut oil daily for 12 weeks had lower amounts of abdominal fat, a type that can be very difficult to lose and can contribute to more heart problems. Coconuts can also help the body resist viruses and bacteria that can cause illness, fight off yeast, fungus and candida. One word of caution though, coconut oil is still considered a saturated fat. Keep your daily intake to no more than 2 TBSP daily. For that reason, I recommend using it for cooking, baking or frying. You can also add a tablespoon to your morning smoothie or as a moisturizer on your body and add a little to your hair for added softness and shine (too much can leave your hair looking and feeling greasy if you don’t wash it out.) 2) Apple Cider Vinegar or ACV. The acetic acid found within ACV suppresses appetite and reduces water retention which, can stop you from gaining excess fat and holding too much water weight. It also increases metabolism, making it easier to burn off calories you’ve eaten throughout the day. • For an easy way to down this super cider, just start with 10 ounces of water, add 2 TBSP ACV, and 2 TBSP honey or maple syrup. Best to drink first thing in the morning! • Or for a Super Simple Salad Dressing, start with 1 part ACV to 3 parts EVOO, add a couple tsps. Honey, Mustard, salt & pepper to taste. 3) And last, but not least, our dearest vegetable villain: Broccoli. Broccoli is high in fiber of course, but also aids in digestion, prevents constipation, keeps blood sugar low and therefore helps to keep you from overeating. And an added bonus: broccoli has as much protein in one cup as rice or corn with half the calories! That’ll do it for today. I hope that was helpful. MCT Oil is a nutrient used for energy, to quell hunger and to burn fat. Athletes can add this to their protein shake and individuals who would like to lose weight can make a delicious salad dressing using the MCT Oil. MCT stands for medium chain triglycerides and we use these molecules for energy.
