When Miguel Leal and his co-founders launched the modern Mexican food brand Somos Foods in 2021, they believed they were introducing a “Goya for millennials.” It turns out that Somos was more suited to be a “Rao's for all consumers.” Miguel is the CEO of Somos Foods, which he founded with Kind Snacks founder Daniel Lubetzky and Rodrigo Zuloaga, who, like Miguel, is a former Kind executive. Somos markets clean ingredient “simmer sauces,” salsa, rice and beans produced in Mexico and made using traditional techniques, according to the brand. The products are distributed in over 11,000 retail doors, including Target, Publix, Whole Foods Market, Walmart and Albertsons. While the founders' original concept – to “re-envision Mexican cuisine in the U.S. with a focus on authenticity, convenience, and sustainability” – has remained consistent, the communication of that message has evolved. Somos is now positioned as a brand for “Mexican meal solutions.” Miguel says that the shift required the company to rethink nearly every aspect of the business, including marketing and product development. The undertaking was challenging and, at times, humbling for Miguel and his co-founders, each of whom have decades of experience in the food industry. In this episode, Miguel speaks about the genesis of Somos, how he and the team came to the realization that the brand needed to adjust its positioning, mistakes that, in hindsight, were avoidable, identifying areas for improvement in how the products tasted and were named, and how their timeline for an potential acquisition has changed significantly. Show notes: 0:35: Miguel Leal, Co-Founder & CEO, Somos Foods – Taste Radio editor Ray Latif visits with Miguel at Somos HQ in Stamford, Connecticut where the entrepreneur chats about the brand's new simmer sauces, his roots growing up on the Mexico/U.S. border and how his profession career is anchored in food marketing. He also explains how the creation of Somos came from he and his co-founders being “frustrated with the options at US grocery,” how they erred in trying to build the brand in a similar way to how Kind Snacks was built, why he compares Somos to Legos and the meaning behind its name. Miguel also discussed the company's emphasis on simple messaging and easy food prep for consumers, why he thought that at the outset that “in 3-5 years Somos could be a great acquisition target” and how he communicated the shift in strategy to the company's investors. Brands in this episode: Somos Foods, Kind Snacks, Cholula, Goya, Rao's

In today's podcast, we talk to Miguel Leal, who is widely regarded as the “Godfather of Mexican Cheese” in the United States. Miguel tells us how he moved to the U.S. from Mexico when he was a teen for an apprenticeship at a Wisconsin cheese factory. Although he didn't know the language, had no money, and had little education with a learning disability, his hard work and determination pushed him through the tough times and led him to build—and eventually sell—a very successful business. “I took the opportunity, and I took it seriously. And I pushed because it was a lot of work. And sometimes I really didn't have money, and I didn't have credit,” he said. “I had to figure it out without going to school. And I didn't have anybody to advise me. I was alone. You have to pay attention and be even more aggressive.” The main topics of today's episode will be Miguel's words of wisdom for entrepreneurs when they are struggling to get a business going and advice for those who have a hard time with traditional learning. We will also talk about how, often, the smartest person in the room is the quietest person in the room. BONUS: Learn the difference between Mexican cheese and American cheese. MIGUEL LEAL is widely regarded as the “Godfather of Mexican Cheese” in the United States. Miguel's story humbly began at a cheese factory in his native Mexico as a teenager. When he was invited to travel to the United States as an apprentice, he jumped at the chance. One of six children raised in poverty after the tragic death of his father in an earthquake, Miguel arrived in Wisconsin without money and speaking little English. As an illegal immigrant, he had no choice but to make a cardboard bed on the factory's boiler room floor. Despite these challenges—through grit, persistence, and hard work— Miguel Leal observed and learned every step of cheesemaking, from cleaning the equipment to cutting and packaging cheese for sale. He was among the first to recognize that the growing number of Latinx immigrants in the U.S. meant there would be a market for specialty Mexican cheeses, and eventually partnered with a master cheesemaker from Wisconsin to work with the Amish in Ohio to produce and hand-sell 60-pound wheels of cotija cheese in the Chicago metro area. The skyrocketing demand for his cheese led Leal to establish his own company, Mexican Cheese Producers, Inc. in 1994. He eventually constructed a state-of- the-art production plant in Darlington, Wisconsin—a prime location with access to the finest quality milk in the country. There, he continued to perfect recipes for a variety of Mexican cheeses and took out patents for the machines used to produce them. Leal eventually sold his business for $50mil to the global company Sigma Alimentos, which still uses his recipes and won the 2020 World Championship Cheese Contest with their flagship cotija cheese. Today, Miguel is a successful real estate developer with a deep investment in his new passion project: supporting Mexico's growing organic foods movement with a farm of his own, where he demonstrates sustainable, organic farming methods to communities in his native country while supporting local charitable efforts. He is also keenly interested in developing a national dog breed for Mexico related to the Argentinian Dogo, a hunting dog suited to being a loyal pet and guard dog. "International foods are having a moment," said Miguel Leal, co-founder and CEO of Somos Foods. Indeed, that's the thesis of his startup, which makes Mexican food products currently sold in over 6,000 stores including Whole Foods and H-E-B. The company has been around for two years and sells products like chips, salsas as well as rice and bean packs. It first started as an online brand but quickly realized that the way to grow a brand like his is by zeroing in on grocery distribution. "Life was definitely pointing us into retail," Leal said on the Modern Retail Podcast. On the show, he spoke about the state of both CPG startups and why international foods are becoming an increasingly popular area for national grocery retailers. Leal knows a thing or two about national retail. He and his co-founders all worked together at Kind -- in fact, Kind founder Daniel Lubetzky is one of Sonos's co-founders. Leal also worked as the chief marketing officer at both Cholula and Diamond Foods. This background helped him realize that there was white space for a premium Mexican food brand. While high-end Mexican restaurants have risen the ranks in U.S. culture over the last year, "it was the same canned beans and fluorescent yellow hard shell tacos at grocery store." Thus, Somos aims to be a step above Old El Paso. So far, the idea seems to be working. Somos continues to expand into new national retailers as well as expand its product portfolio. Most recently, it launched a salsa macha condiment. "We have some big retail announcements coming soon over the summer, another big one in the fall, and then by the end of the year," he said. "But we also have some really exciting products coming into the market."

It was the summer after my senior year of high school. I had just graduated and I was on my way to Chiquila, Mexico. We landed, for my first time in Mexico, and drove to a remote village where everything was new to me. There was something so foreign, yet so inviting, and that combination made me dive into every experience that approached me over the next few weeks. One thing that stood out to me in such a profound way was the way the culture was food, and the food was culture. As we walked the streets, there were open air dining areas where the community gathered. Grandmas in the village were hand crafting their own tortillas with a method I could have never imagined. The salsa and vegetables were prepared in a way that revealed flavors and cooking techniques that I would have never known existed. Since coming back to the east coast, I had yet to find an option on the shelf or in the restaurants that brought me back there…until I had Somos. Through learning more about this brand and the co-founders who created it, I knew that I had so much more to learn and that it was a conversation I knew would expand all of our knowledge on the way we approach Mexican Cuisine and culture. Through this conversation with Miguel Leal you will hear: What role food plays in the average Mexican household. The main difference in the food culture between America and Mexico. Through working in many of the leading retail food brands, what led Miguel to start Somos. What sets Somos apart from other Mexican food brands and ways you can use each product. What we all can adopt from Mexican table culture. Miguel said through this conversation, “Once you fall in love with the food, you fall in love with the culture. That's what we want to do at Somos. I want to bring two neighboring cultures together, one taco at a time.” My hope is that this conversation does exactly that! ------------------------------------Visit This Episodes Sponsors Cotier Brand:Save 15% on conversation napkins at Cotier w/ code Gather15 through their website here!

This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Somos is on a mission to bring the best of Mexican food to the world, says Miguel Leal, Founder and CEO of Somos.   Authentic, contemporary Mexican cuisine is no stranger to restaurants - particularly in larger cities - but it's missing from store shelves, Miguel explains. That frustration led to the creation of Somos.   "I think there are great brands that do a really good job marketing Tex-Mex and Cal-Mex foods on the shelf," Miguel says. "And then there are other great brands that do a good value proposition for Mexican food. But we didn't see any brands that represented it the way we want it to come through on the shelf."   That vision was plant-based, non-GMO, gluten-free with simple ingredients and strong nutritional values, he says. The challenge was that the supply chain for those items didn't exist in Mexico.   "I almost feel like we were starting from scratch, and it took a lot of trust on our suppliers and our family farms, on our manufacturing partners to believe in this project," he says.   Once the products were initially created, Somos pushed its customers for as much feedback as possible to get the items as perfect as possible.   "Probably my favorite piece of feedback has been from people who have received our boxes, people that have tried our product have told me this reminds me a lot of what my grandma used to send me from Mexico," Miguel says.   The COVID pandemic caused several issues to the startup of the brand, Miguel says, as the founders were unable to have face-to-face meetings with suppliers and retailers - a vital strategy considering the brand's mission to sail uncharted waters.   In Part 1, Miguel talks about:   * Gratitude for symbols of support and love his family gave him before he married. * The mission of Somos. * The disconnect between Mexican food in restaurants and on grocery shelves. * The challenge of finding the right ingredients through a reliable supply chain. * How the COVID pandemic affected the business. * How the Mexican labor market has helped on the supply chain side.   Join Ramon Vela and Miguel Leal as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.   For more on Somos, visit: https://eatsomos.com/    To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, now through May 5th, all SOMOS meal kits on eatsomos.com  – including the Cinco de Mayo Taco Kit – are 50% off with code CELEBRATECINCO at checkout.   Subscribe and Listen to the podcast on all major apps. This episode is brought to you by Sendlane.   Part of the mission of Somos is to dispel the idea that Mexican food is unhealthy, says Miguel Leal, Founder and CEO of the Mexican food brand.   "You know those yellow fluorescent tacos don't exist," Miguel says. "Mexican food was 100 percent plant-based before the Spanish Conquest era in Mexico. They are the ones that brought a lot of the animal protein that is used now in Mexican food."   Instead, authentic Mexican food is full of vegetables, legumes, and grains.   "That's why we launched first with plant-based, gluten-free, non-GMO because we wanted to completely turn over that misconception and show that Mexican food can be authentic, delicious, and also healthy and convenient," he says.   Another Somos objective is to feature regional cuisines. One of the first products is chilaquiles, a popular dish that best resembles breakfast nachos.   Miguel's life-long obsession with food began growing up in Monterrey, Mexico, where his family would journey to Texas to do grocery shopping. Fascinated by the number of choices in the stores, he began a career with big food companies after college. He fell in love with the CPG community in 2009. Being from a family of entrepreneurs, he made the next natural step to try starting a brand.   "If I had any regrets, it's that we didn't do it sooner," he says.   Somos combines online sales with retail sales as part of its strategy.   "I think we could do this company for 20, 30, 50 years and still have new things that we can bring into the market because Mexican cuisine and culture are so rich," Miguel says.   In Part 2, Miguel talks about:   * The difference between Mexican food in America and Mexican food in Mexico. * The popularity of chilaquiles. * How he came to love the CPG marketplace and community. * A tour of the brand's website. * An explanation of the brand's products. * The meaning of the name "Somos."   Join Ramon Vela and Miguel Leal as they break down the inside story on The Story of a Brand.
