“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning.”Fred Rogers aka Mister Rogers.I talk about Johan Huizinga's book Homo Ludens.he describes play like this:“Play is a free activity standing quite consciously outside 'ordinary' life as being 'not serious,' but at the same time absorbing the player intensely and utterly.”You can't be serious, is this your real job? is one of my pet peeves and an instigator for this whole 30 episode season. I explore it further in this episode.Child's play is serious.Adult play. what is it?Work and play. What is the relationship, differences and similarities...What is the purpose of the child's play? We are back and so is the weird news with a story about a man who handed the cop a joint when he got pulled over, and a guy who caused a major fire issue when burning some sex toys. We hear about Cass’ trip to Pittsburgh and the amazing discovery she made. We play Can’t Beat Cassiday, Anthony schools us in home repair knowledge, Cass learns a lot in Delightfully Useless Trivia, and we play another round of “Get Bit Bro”. The equinox — which translates roughly in Latin to “equal night” — is when the sun sits vertically above the equator, making day and night equal across the planet. The Spring Equinox officially marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Nothing says spring like flowers! Celebrate the Spring Equinox by bringing some flowers into your home. Buy a bunch of cut flowers from your local market — daffodils and tulips should be in season now — or buy a little plant to keep in your window. Buying flowers for yourself is a happy and small indulgence.

The timeless lyrics from Fred Rogers' beloved song “Won't You Be my Neighbor” remind us of the simple yet profound value of being a good neighbor. Most listeners of this podcast probably remember Mister Roger's Neighborhood that aired nationally between 1968 and 2001 and became a staple of children's television, focusing on themes of kindness, empathy and community. In times of disaster, when uncertainty and fear can overwhelm us, the essence of these words becomes even more powerful. Disasters test the strength of our communities and being a good neighbor means stepping up with kindness, support, and connection. It's not just about asking, “How can I help?” but it's showing up emotionally for for those around us in their greatest moments of need. In many ways, being a good neighbor is showing love with intentional actions that foster connection and make a difference. This is especially relevant as this airs with the recent disasters faced by many in California with so much loss by fire. Greg and I share a few thoughts that will hopefully inspire you to reach out to someone who needs a hug, encouragement or even a helping hand. Text us your questions! This is one of our favorite interviews we've ever done. Nicholas Ma (son of famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma) is a filmmaker best known for producing the 2018 documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? about Fred Rogers. We speak with him about his latest documentary Leap of Faith, which follows a group of Christian pastors from diverse sociocultural and demographic backgrounds in the Grand Rapids, MI area for a year as they attempt to form community across theological and social dividing lines. The film is a challenging and raw exploration of vulnerability and what it means to practice Christian faith in our political moment. Nicholas himself is a gentle, kind, empathetic, and almost preternaturally wise person who made us a bit more hopeful about our situation. We also get a chance to discuss Mister Rogers and what we can learn from him in this moment. The video clip of Nicholas playing piano with his dad on Mister Rogers' Neighborhood as a child can be seen in part here.We had intended to release this episode at Christmas, but life got in the way. Somehow it seems even more fitting to release it today, when we remember Martin Luther King Jr. as we simultaneously inaugurate the most divisive and authoritarian President in our nation's history. We know that conversations like this can sometimes feel trite in contexts like that, like putting a band-aid on a hemorrhage. But Nicholas helps us refocus, to think not about what's insurmountable, but about what is manageable in our particular context. To look, as Fred said, for the helpers, and to ask again what it means to love our neighbor.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. Rebroadcast note: We're hard at work recording a brand new miniseries for January, so this week we're resharing one this episode from our Future of HR miniseries. As we've worked with companies over the last year to reimagine their HR departments, we've seen this episode's ideas and lessons about evolving the HRBP even more important in practice. So take a listen with some fresh ears, and we'll see in two weeks with a brand new episode. The role of HR Business Partner is often a tale of two experiences. On the one hand, HRBPs are some of the most empathetic and passionate people you'll ever meet. On the other hand, they're stuck on the hamster wheel of busywork, bouncing from crisis to crisis without the authority to prioritize their energy—and without the respect from leadership to make a real difference. Look up “burnout” in the dictionary and odds are you'll find a picture of an HRBP. In this miniseries, Brave New Work's Rodney Evans is joined by friend-of-the-pod and Ready OG Sam Spurlin to dive into how HR can become more resilient, efficient, and equitable. Today on episode 5, they explore how this critical role took a hard left turn from it's intended purpose, what its future-of-work glow-up (hello, HR Business Coach) could look like, and how HR Business Coaches + Mission-Based Teaming = unlimited potential. To be honest I didn't think I'd ever get Brian the Bootmaker on this show—he doesn't do many interviews at all, and for whatever reason I was, quite frankly, kind of afraid to ask him. Which in hindsight is insane because he's about as sweet and genuine and fantastic to talk to as people come. Working out of the central Los Angeles workshop he first wandered into in high school while looking for thread to customize some sneakers, Brian IS Role Club, hand-making some of the world's most distinctive and in-demand custom boots alongside his beloved teacher Nacho for going on a decade and a half. One of the earliest stories I posted on Stitchdown.com was about a YouTube video of Brian resoling an Alden Indy Boot with a Vibram mini ripple sole. Some said it was sacrilege! But all of Brian's videos, and work, reflect him so well. He's an innovator despite relying on techniques hundreds of years old, a calm in the content storm, a still young man who loves nothing more than really old boots. And one of the most thoughtful people I've ever chatted with. Also he just might be Mister Rogers. This week on It Was a Thing on TV we close out Back to School 2024 week and then we honor a recently departed TV legend. First, it's time for the final entry of Back to School 2024. This time, we're focusing on educational shows. Everybody remembers shows like 3-2-1 Contact, The Electric Company, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. But do you remember some of the 15-minute shows like Wordsmith and Math Wise? If not, we have you covered in this episode about educational shows which generally ran from about 9 in the morning to 5 in the afternoon from the 1970s through the early 1990s. To see many of the shows mentioned in this episode and more, visit https://libraries.indiana.edu/agency-instructional-technology-ait. Then, Bob Newhart struck gold with The Bob Newhart Show in the 70s and Newhart in the 80s through 1990. Could Newhart do it again with another self-titled endeavor? Bob was a clever and funny show, but it didn't have a certain something that both his previous shows had. Despite quality names as guests including a future Friend, the show was saddled with bad time slots and only lasted a handful of episodes into its second season. This week we'll finish up our walk through past episodes with one of my all-time favorites about Mr. Rogers. I had been wanting to do an episode related to Fred Rogers for quite some time, but it took me a while to finally pull some threads together and connect my thoughts just a little bit. This episode was originally published as episode 103 in November of 2019, and it explores how important it is to realize the impact other people have on the choices that we make for good or for ill. It's about the creativity that can come from frustration, the connection that can happen when we offer a little space, and the generosity that we all have the ability to spread. I hope you'll listen in. Sarah Silverman and Todd Glass stop by the kitchen for some meat prints and tofu nuggets. We talk Todd's OCD, Sarah's experience watching porn, and how great a person Mister Rogers was. I make a new take on chicken and waffles, Todd treats us to Pop-Tart ice cream sandwiches… and I'm serenaded at the end. All in all, a pretty great day.
