I have a very special guest on the podcast today - Aaron Espe! Aaron is actually the incredible creator behind the good movement music here on the podcast, so I was very excited to have him on the show. I've been a fan of Aaron's since I first heard him play (I like to consider myself a ‘superfan') - his music has been like a soundtrack for my life over the last few years, and it really helped me ‘get moving' again when I needed it. We talk about what Aaron's journey has been like in the music industry so far + where his focus will be next, what went into creating the good movement music for the podcast, the inspiration and details for his new book, On Songwriting, and more. In this episode, we cover: Aaron's journey so far in the music industry, and how he's choosing to focus on making the next, best decisions for for his values and family Aaron's thoughts on good movement + our first connection about the podcast The process for creating the Good Movement music for the podcast How Aaron's song for the podcast brought me joy and really helped me get moving again in my own life Aaron's Up North album + co-writing, and how it's changed since the pandemic The inspiration for Aaron's new book, On Songwriting: Practical Tips and Insights from a Decade in Music City + what you can expect from it The power of actually writing your thoughts and ideas down in the moment Not discounting the mundane, everyday tasks in your life Resources & Links: Aarons's Book, On Songwriting [affiliate link] Good Movement Trainings Learn more about T's coaching, group trainings, and self-guided learning Shop FFB Good Movement music by: Aaron Espe Podcast produced by: Jill Carr Podcasting Connect with Aaron: Follow on Instagram Follow on Facebook Follow on Twitter/X and TikTok Check out his YouTube Send him an email a@aaronespe.com Connect with Terryn: Follow on Instagram @terryn.drieling Check out my website Send me an email at terryn@faithfamilyandbeef.com Make sure to hit subscribe/follow so you never miss an episode! *This is part 2 - check part 1 from last week!* Ever wondered how White Evangelical Protestants got the way they are? The music that generation created played an outsized role in the formation of their subculture, one that would come to dominate a large chunk of American sociopolitics in the coming 6 decades. And you know what? Some of it rules. (Some emphatically does not.) Lindsay Strannigan (Holy Ghosting Podcast, formerly of The Militia Group) joins me to break down this movement from a musicological angle over two parts, focusing on music released between 1967 and 1979, right up to the moment when Contemporary Christian Music truly emerges as its own cultural force (for better and for worse). A Little Bit of Death is an annual storytelling show that centers BIPOC and queer voices around the themes of grief, letting go, and transformation. This year I was invited to present at a summit pertaining to the work I do with A Little Bit of Death, so I who better to join me in speaking on it than the pals that have gone through the process. I reached out to some and asked if I could interview them on their experience with the show, what impact it had, what they shared, why sharing these stories matter. With their permission, I'm sharing the audio from those interviews I'll be using for my presentation at the summit. One of the last episodes I had recorded before my latest break was about following and following through on your wild ideas. A Little Bit of Death was one of those wild ideas for me and it's blossomed since the first show 7 years ago. This year, it'll be held over 2 nights in Hartford, CT at Carriage House Theater on the evenings of Friday November 11th and Saturday November 12th. I thought I'd drop these special episodes leading up to the show this year and I hope you enjoy them and, obviously, join us at the show! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thecreativealchemist/support
Do you emotionally overeat, struggle with binge eating or know someone who does? Do you constantly critique the way you look? Do you yo-yo diet and feel less-than free and content around food and in your body?If so, this episode is definitely one for you! Today's guest is certified mind body eating coach, Jessi Jean, who turned her own decade long struggle with food & body into her business and mission. Now she helps thousands of women all around the world end the fight with food using unique brain-based techniques so they can have a peaceful relationship with food & unshakeable confidence in their skin. On this episode we discuss Jessi's own story recovering from an eating disorder, practical ways to regulate our nervous system, how we should be careful about the siloed virtual realities we can find ourselves living in through social media and so much more in the themes of healing, health and wellness. Here are a few of my favourite quotes from the episode: “I refer to it as “the known zone” not the “comfort zone” because it's not comfortable to struggle with shame and guilt and impulsiveness with food, but it's known and we often will choose what's known over what's unfamiliar, even when it doesn't serve us”. “Healing can be really exciting. I like to look at it as you're deciding what your future is instead of leaving it up to your automatic programming; it's like having a blank canvas and you're painting a new picture for the next chapter in the next season of your life.”“Fear expands when we resist it. You'll be amazed that you can do things scared and that actually the antidote to fear is in action and leaning into it.”I hope you enjoy the episode and if you do please rate, review and share with a friend! Today we're talking about a beloved top-grossing comedy film: "9 to 5" which was released in the 1980s. Starring Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lily Tomlin, the movie not only was the film debut of Dolly Parton and introduced her Grammy Award-winning song by the same name but it also was inspired by true events of working women in Boston and Cleveland (primarily) who had started a movement in the '60s-'70s petitioning for better work environments for the women that made up 70% of the workforce at the time. We discuss the documentary on Netflix about the movement and union, the actual film itself and the process of writing and producing it, the beloved song by our country queen Dolly, and the impact it had on the future of female office workers.Episodes to check out after this one: History of Western FeminismWant to check out some of our favorite books? Ama Wray – Performance Architect Dr. S. Ama Wray, TEDx Speaker, has been performing, teaching and choreographing across 3 continents for over 30 years, performing and touring with London Contemporary Dance Theater and Rambert Dance Company across the UK, USA and Europe. As founder and Artistic Director of JazzXchange Music and Dance Company she was Artist-in-Residence at The Royal Opera House and Southbank Center, UK. Improvisation, often seen as the dominion of jazz music is also synonymous with creativity and in 2021, she has launched a new program to bring this insight into the lives of everyday people through a body mind practice called JiM™ - Joy in Motion. This work emerges out a methodology she created known as Embodiology®. It originates from a study of improvisation identified within West African performance practices through which six principles were identified and iteratively tested in western performance contexts to attain their performance efficacy. Committed to recognizing these origins her organization gives royalties back to the rural community with whom she studies Ewe dance and music. These principles are now being translated and applied to illuminate different areas of human communication, across fields such as medical humanities, music, leadership, child development and somatic coaching. Recent publications include chapters in British Dance, Black Routes and The Oxford Handbook of Improvisation. This virtual iteration, developed during this COVID-19 pandemic, led her to provide services to the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, at the University of California Irvine. A former National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts Fellow (NESTA), a UK version of the McArthur Awards, she began her exploration into performance and technology through a concept known as Texterritory produced by Future Physical. These digital terrains continue to be explored through AI 4 Afrika, an initiative she co-founded with choreographers, data scientists, artists, scholars, and entrepreneurs in 2020. Alongside artistic practice she continues her intellectual pursuits, receiving the African Diaspora Emerging Scholar Award from the Comparative International Education Society in 2018. As a public intellectual she has been an invited speaker for the United Nations, Dance/USA, Princeton University, Temple University, University of Wisconsin-Madison; Atlantic Center of the Arts, Florida and New Waves! Emma Marshall is a teacher, dancer and creator from London who teaches her creation 'Movement is Medicine' as a class via Zoom and in person. Last year she created a 30 Day Movement is Medicine challenge, curated a playlist for people to access and dance to and got people from all over the world up and moving in. This grew into a worldwide movement of people using dance with clear intention and trauma informed teachings to help them release, regulate and come back into their body. Emmas education on somatic therapy, the nervous system and the ancient teachings around music and dance also fed heavily into the curated teaching. Emma believes that the issues that society faces today are created due to a disconnect from self, from community and from the planet due to unresolved mental, emotional and physical stress and trauma. With the right tools people can work through this disconnection by working with their physical body to create release - which in turn impacts the mind as well. During this process connection is re-established, which in turn impacts every area of health and wellbeing - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Students don’t enter our classrooms as blank slates. When it comes to the civil rights movement, we often have to help our students unlearn what they think they know while we’re teaching them what actually happened. The people were more complex, the strategies more complicated and the stakes more dangerous than we like to remember. In this episode, historian Nishani Frazier and social studies teacher Adam Sanchez demonstrate the value of teaching the movement from the grassroots up. You can find useful resources—like Nishani's Harambee City website and Adam's “Teaching SNCC" classroom activities—along with a full transcript on our website. Charchil & Sagar discuss what feeling alive means to them, living like Mr Bean, being yourself no matter where you are and spending time alone to acknowledge thoughts and emotions. They discuss how our breath is the strongest sign of us being alive and how to come back to our body using movement, listening to music and expressing our full breath of feelings and emotions, becoming a Yes person and contemplating death. Finally, the exercise on going out in the open and breathing deep is introduced. Quick Note: We had some problems with the audio of this episode. In September 2011 they released a remix of the track “Someone Like You” by Adele that has gathered over a million views on YouTube. In the months following they continued to release numerous original tracks and remixes. Fast-forward to 2014 and they've released numerous edits/remixes as well as original mixes. Their tracks “Ghosts”, “Titanic” “Fall Semester” and “Mastadon” have gained wide spread recognition from blogs, fans, and artists alike. “Ghosts” was released on Beatport under Movement Music. Their Latest remix of “Wings” by Tom Swoon (Milk N Cookies Remix) was released on Ultra Records and their remix of “Anywhere Else tonight” by Vandalism has received international acclaim. Also their “Festival Remix” of Beatport's #1 track, “Animals” by Martin Garrix has become a staple in DJ sets and was featured on numerous live sets by major artists like Hardwell, Afrojack, Zedd, Nicky Romero, Nervo; plus being feature on blogs, Kiss.Fm, and Hardwell On Air podcast 129.
