In recent years, I have fallen back in love with New Age, space music, and the droning, atmospheric, accessible Neoclassical genre. Imagine music to TV shows, movies and moods that don't exist … or only exist in the composers' and performers' own heads. Works like Max Richter's Sleep and Johann Johannson's Virðulegu Forsetar have played and replayed in my head as I lie on my bed dozens of times now. Their droning but moving parts, atmospheric sound and noise, and accessible melody and harmony, slow and calming and transporting … I can't get enough. That's why a chance to interview Hipster Pug, a maker of Neoclassical, ambient and experimental music, was exciting. Forgive some of my excited, stumbling questions. Settle in and discover why we both love these genres and how this new musician fell in love with, not just listening, but making the work himself … Want a flavor before we start? I mention his “journey of dreams.” Listen right here on Bandcamp. If you like it, throw him a few bucks and buy the whole thing! Want to dive into Neoclassical, to see what's what? Here are some artists and selections discussed during (or after we finished recording) this episode: “Infra 5” from Max Richter's Infra (one of our guest's favorites), here on YouTube Orphée from Johann Johannson “Particles” from Ólafur Arnauld's Island Songs, here on YouTube nouveau chapitre EP and Neon Noir album from Hipster Pug himself artists from the label that carries Hipster Pug, Monochrome Motif, focusing on “Post Classical,” “Cinematic” and “Electronica” music Want my favorite work these days? This is it: spoken word, machine noise, manipulated vocals, beautiful drones and music.

Ville Valo's new solo album, "Neon Noir", arrived on January 13 via Heartagram Records and is being distributed by UMG/Spinefarm. Last April, Valo released the first single from "Neon Noir", a song called "Loveletting", which marked his first new music in over two years, following the release of the three-track "Gothica Fennica Vol. 1" EP, also released under the VV moniker, in March 2020. VV's headline tour will make it's way across Europe and North America throughout 2023. Commencing in his home town of Helsinki, Finland, the extensive run of shows hits the U.K. in March before heading to North America in April. Click the below link to choose your listening platform for episode 118 I will start with the following quote "Neon Noir is a sonic step-by-step guide on how to survive, and perhaps even enjoy, the realm of VV with its abundance of things that go bump in the night,” says Valo. “It's a teary mascara marathon between Robert Smith and Ozzy, with a dash of hope.” I can safely safe if you're a fan of HIM this record will not disappointment as their classics sounds and themes from Ville Valo, from cleverly worded lyrics such as the lyric is the forever lost (. moon dial up sun dial down) to soaring melodic chorus that will have you humming alone. all of this is pieced together in these huge beautiful mesmerizing soundscapes vertigo eyes is the perfect example of this. In closing HIM may have been gone for the past five years, but, it's so good to have Ville Valo still humming and strumming on his guitar. Neon Noir.On this episode we are joined by Ville Valo, Ville Valo is a Finnish singer, songwriter and musician. He is best known as the lead vocalist of the gothic rock band HIM. Born and raised in Helsinki to a Hungarian mother and Finnish father, Valo began his career playing bass and drums in various bands around the cityPlease support the Mark and Me Podcast via Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/Markandme or you can buy me a coffee here: https://ko-fi.com/markandme or you can even treat yourself to a badge or sticker over at my store here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/MarkandMeStore
Most musicians will tell you that creating music is their lifeline. Most serious music fans will also attest to this. Almost all of us can summon a song or album to mind that we really connected with at a turbulent time in our lives, and in turn it became the soundtrack to our survival. Music, of course is just as synonymous with happy occasions, however Ville Valo and his former band HIM, don't exactly conjure up images of sunshine and rainbows. The frontman of the iconic gothic rock band is about to release his first solo album under the moniker VV. He opened up to HEAVY about how writing this album helped him survive the uncertainty and unhappiness of the pandemic, and how creating music has always given him purpose. Valo has not deviated far from the sweetly melancholic, brooding gothic aesthetic that HIM is well known for. “I still hate happy music.” Valo muses, “Sad, melancholic music makes me really happy. That's my thing.”Valo graciously dedicated time to deep dive with HEAVY about what it means for him to be releasing this solo record, titled Neon Noir, after being part of HIM for some twenty plus years. He jokingly remarked that Neon Noir is “like a HIM album, but it's played a bit worse and sounds more like the 80's.”Valo is no newbie to composing records, after all he was responsible for all the song writing in HIM. However, on Neon Noir he also plays all the instruments and mentioned that when writing for HIM he would compose songs keeping in mind the individual styles of his band mates and what sound they would bring on board. He noted that the difference now is that he can infuse influences that he didn't necessarily share with the other members of HIM. “They weren't such huge fans of Duran Duran and The Sisters Of Mercy and The Chameleons, all that sort of stuff, so I was able to put all that influence onto the album.”Check out the interview to reacquaint yourself with Ville Valo and learn more about Neon Noir, tour plans and everything in between!Neon Noir is to be released in true gothic style on Friday the 13 th of January, 2023.
"I don't have to ask for anyone's permission" - one of the main reasons why Ville Valo is enjoying his solo project VV so much. In january he will release his first record "Neon Noir" on which he played all instruments himself. We talked to the former HIM-singer about the new musical freedom, his touring habits and of course about the writing process for his record. Enjoy!
The Northern Lights, Nokia, The Moomins. Finland has a lot going for it. And yet perhaps the shiniest jewel in its crown is that of one Ville Valo, until 2017 the singer in the goth pop phenomenon HIM, thereafter – and under the initials VV – the sleek solo artist he had always threatened to be. Ville releases his debut solo album Neon Noir on January 13th, 2023, via Spinefarm and on this episode we get into what went wrong and what went very right with his old band, and how this new collection of – very good I have to say – songs came about. I've got some previous with Ville, as you'll learn. This is the first time we've spoken in, oooh, 17 years. Turns out he's still as kind, funny and charming as I remember him. Dancing in the goth club, bumper to bumper, wait a minute… where's my jumper?Have you signed up for the Substack yet?

JAMES DAVID PATRICK, he of the James Bond Social Media Project, #Bond_age_, returns to the show to discuss a phase of film very near and dear to his heart. Cocaine Noir, or Neon Noir, encapsulates a type of sleazy, sexy, violent thriller popular throughout the 1980s and through to the mid-1990s. We define it, explore the films that shaped this sub-genre, and talk about the filmmakers and actors and actresses that made these unforgettable B-pictures cult favorites.#Bond_age twitter#Bond_age websiteMusic on this podcast:Artist: Wang ChungSong: To Live and Die in L.A.Song: Dance Hall DaysCopyrights are owned by the artists and their labels.
