Welcome to the latest episode of The Veg Grower Podcast! In this episode, we're sharing some of our recent gardening adventures, including an update from the allotment, a chat with author Maggie Stuckey about her new book the container victory garden, and a delicious cauliflower recipe. Allotment Update: Helping a Fellow Plot Holder and Clearing Weeds In our latest visit to the allotment, we had the opportunity to help a fellow plot holder get her car running and clear some weeds from our plots. It's always a pleasure to work together and support each other in our gardening endeavours. We believe that the community aspect of gardening is just as important as the actual growing of plants, and it's great to see everyone come together to create a thriving community garden space. Container Victory Garden. We were thrilled to have author Maggie Stuckey on the show to discuss her book "The container victory garden." Container gardening is a great way to grow plants in small spaces, and it can be especially helpful for urban gardeners or those with limited outdoor space. Maggie shared some fantastic tips for beginners and discussed the benefits of container gardening. If you're interested in starting a container garden, we highly recommend checking out Maggie's book for more detailed advice and inspiration. Available at: Amazon ukAmazon us Veg Garden Update: Building a Large Vegepod and Buying Compost and Perlite in Bulk In our own veg garden, we've been busy building a large Vegepod and buying compost and perlite in bulk. The Vegepod is a raised garden bed that comes with its own protective cover, making it easy to grow a variety of plants while protecting them from pests and harsh weather conditions. It's been a lot of work, but we're excited to see the results and share our experience with our listeners. Delicious Roasted Cauliflower Recipe Before we sign off, we wanted to share a cauliflower recipe that we've been loving lately. Simply chop up a head of cauliflower into bite-sized pieces, toss with olive oil, salt, pepper, and your favourite spices, and roast in the oven at 220 degrees Celsius (Gas Mark 7) for about 20-25 minutes until golden and crispy. It's a healthy and delicious side dish that's perfect for any meal. Conclusion We hope you enjoyed reading about our recent gardening adventures on the allotment and in our veg garden, as well as our chat with Maggie Stuckey about container gardening. We believe that gardening is a wonderful way to connect with nature, promote sustainability, and create a sense of community. If you have any questions or comments, we'd love to hear from you. With over 22 years in the growing business, Logan McLean of Cool Springs Nursery joins Greg on the Row By Row Show tonight to discuss and break down the different types of seed starting mix (potting soil). Garden Update August is Greg's least favorite month in the garden. With it being so hot in south Georgia, he is using this time to prepare for his fall garden with his silage tarps. Tarping, bed prep for the fall sweet corn crop. His first crop of cabbage and broccoli started in the greenhouse. Greg recommends starting varieties in the Brassica family (Broccoli) inside, if you plant start them in the greenhouse and have temperatures that reach in the 100s, you could have problems; he also states that there is still time to plant cover crops and flowers! Potting Soil Ingredients Most of the consumer mixes that you buy in the big box store are mostly made up of Peat, which is a very common ingredient in potting soil. There are different grades of peat; the best peat to use is peat that comes from Canada, they have the superior product. Peat with a good water holding capacity is the best. Perlite is a volcanic glass that is heated at 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Whereupon it pops much like popcorn and expands 13 times its former size, resulting in an incredibly lightweight material. More porous than vermiculite. It is considered non-organic. It does drain well, and there are different grades. A lot of commercial growers use perlite to put on top of the seeds/seedlings to retain moisture. Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral that undergoes significant expansion when heated. Increases water, nutrient retention, and aerates the soil; it is heated just like Perlite. The finer the grade of vermiculite, the lower the quality - which is normally what consumers receive. The commercial line isn't as fine as what the consumer would get. This mineral has major water holding capabilities. The nutrients in Vermiculite are not as good as what is in peat; vermiculite is used for aeration in your soil. DIY Seed Starting Mix 2/4 peat 1/4 perlite 1/4 vermiculite A good mix should be dense enough to hold the plant, allow for air exchange and water flow while retaining moisture, be free of pathogens and weed seed, and meet the need of specific crops and growing environments. Container Mixes One of the most used ingredients in commercial mixes is pine bark because it is economical. Pine bark needs to be aged to work well; most "container" gardeners use this mix for tomatoes but will work with almost any vegetable or fruit grown in a container. Coir is another important ingredient, it is considered coconut fiber. A natural fiber extracted from the outer husk of coconut with a very similar water holding capacity as peat. Logan describes their companies propagation mix as using mainly sand and pine bark. Some of the varieties they propagate will have some perlite but not much. Having a mix with a good amount of pine bark and sand will help hold in moisture extremely well. Sand is used to increasing density and drainage, it is used as a filler. Logan's container mix is made up of 80% pine bark, 10% sand, and 10% peat. We do add a small amount of 3-4 month fertilizer (8 lbs per yard) which gives it a kick-start. You normally want to keep your PH level around 5-6%. Compost Compost adds nutrient value and micros while holding water and nutrients well, has a high cation exchange value. Most mixes are 2 parts peat, 1 part perlite, and 1 part vermiculite. Pearlite is a naturally expanded volcanic gas, Vermiculite is a mineral compound that can be heated to expand (incidentally the name comes from the heated products tendency to expand into worm like strands.)Also to clarify, when I said “There aren’t many genetically modified organisms in food production right now.” I meant to say varieties, significant portions of our sugar beet and field corn populations are GMO, as is most alfalfa grown as a feed. Todays guest is Patrick Cheetham, Chairman and MD of Sunrise Resources, a mining company who acquire, explore and develop mineral projects, and who are currently developing a project to mine natural pozzolan and perlite in Nevada, USA.  We talk about the uses of natural pozzolan and perlite and how Sunrise Resources are developing the project in the US. KEY TAKEAWAYS Patrick’s background is in geology, and always found the subject fascinating. This stood him in good stead when he went to college, and subsequently was recruited by Western Mining in Australia. Sunrise began as a diamond exploration concern. After working in this market, Sunrise realised that raising capital was difficult, and so broadened its focus. Pozzolan is one of the most important deposits in the world and acts as a naturally occurring cement, and has numerous invaluable uses throughout the industrial world. Perlite has the additional property of popping when heated to high temperatures. This is used in horticulture to aerate soil, and is also used in insulation. Sunrise’s main consumers are ready-mix companies, who use pozzolan in concrete, which is a vital ingredient in fly ash. Pozzolan has a value similar to cement in terms of money. It doesn’t stand huge transport differences, and is mainly used in the USA. Mine permitting is key for Sunrise in the future, which will allow for production to begin in earnest when 2020 arrives. Agreements with utility providers, and sourcing water for projects are also high on the agenda. .BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s not as easy when you don’t have the money behind you!’ ‘Perlite pops like popcorn’ ’The Pantheon dome is still the world’s largest expanse of concrete’ ’There’s no natural pozzolan produced in the UK’ VALUABLE RESOURCES   Dig Deep – The Mining Podcast on iTunes Sunrise Resources - https://www.sunriseresourcesplc.com Patrick Cheetham LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/patrick-cheetham-444a782/?originalSubdomain=uk https://www.mining-international.org/#one ABOUT THE HOST Rob Tyson is an established recruiter in the mining and quarrying sector and decided to produce the “Dig Deep” The Mining Podcast to provide valuable and informative content around the mining industry. Fragrance in the garden...   The most fragrant blossoms include:   Cheddar pinks (a member of the carnation family) Lavender Peony Gardenia Honeysuckle Hyacinth Lilac Mock Orange Daphne Bee balm     Brevities #OTD  On this day, in 1805, Meriwether Lewis was just one day away from reaching the Great Falls of Missouri.   He wrote his own brief description of a species that was previously unknown to science.   He wrote,   "The narrow leafed cottonwood grows here in common with the other species of the same tree with a broad leaf."   Wonder if he saw all the cottonwood seeds floating through the air...         #OTD  It was a little over 200 years ago today, in 1817, that a forest ranger, named Karl Freiherr von Drais, invented the first bicycle.         #OTD  And it's the anniversary of the death day of Edward Newman who was an English entomologist, botanist, and writer.   Newman wrote, An Illustrated Natural History of the British MothsIn 1869.   He also enjoyed writing poetry.   Just as the butterfly, child of an hour,  Flutters about in the light of the sun,  Wandering wayward from flower to flower,  Sipping the honey from all, one by one; So does the fanciful verse I've created Love amongst the experts in Science to roam, Drinking their spirit without being sated, Bringing the sweets of their intellect home.           #OTD It was on this day, in 1948, that the Michigan Botanical Club adopted its name.   It wasn't agreed upon very easily.   The Board of Directors and the executive committee couldn't agree. They decided to hold a vote. The choices included: The Michigan Association for Native Plants Protection The Michigan Wildflower Association The Michigan Native Plant Society The Michigan Botanical Club   Although the rest of the state voted unanimously for the Michigan Botanical Club, the strong-willed southeastern chapter had taken a poll and they wanted the name The Michigan Wildflower Association.   The matter was finally settled when the general membership voted. It's been The Michigan Botanical Club ever since.       #OTD  And it was on this day in 1918 that the botanist Frank Nicholas Meyer was buried in Shanghai.   Six days later, his family, back home in the Netherlands, learned of his death.   At the beginning of June, Meyer had traveled to Shanghai by way of Japanese riverboat on the Yangtze River.   He was last seen leaving his cabin on the evening of June 1; then he simply disappeared.   His body was found in the river four days later.   Meyer was just 43 years old when he either fell over board or was murdered.   In either case, his legacy continues; not only in the plants he introduced (like the Meyer Lemon), but also, in the magnificent photographs that he took in China.           Unearthed Words Here are some short sayings about June:   "If a June night could talk, it would probably boast it invented romance." - Bern Williams      "Spring being a tough act to follow, God created June." -  Al Bernstein      "What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade." -  Gertrude Jekyll, On Gardening   "June is bustin' out all over." -  Oscar Hammerstein II, 1945     Today's book recommendation: Sex, Botany, and Empire: The Story of Carl Linnaeus and Joseph Banks by Patricia Fara   Fara said,   "Banks provided a marvelous illustration of how science and the British Empire grew rich and powerful together."   Fara reveals how Enlightenment botany, under the veil of rationality, manifested a drive to conquer, subdue, and deflower―all in the name of British empire.   Linnaeus trained his traveling disciples in a double mission―to bring back specimens for the benefit of the Swedish economy and to spread the gospel of Linnaean taxonomy.   Based in London at the hub of an international exchange and correspondence network, Banks ensured that Linnaeus's ideas became established throughout the world. As the president of the Royal Society for more than forty years, Banks revolutionized British science, and his innovations placed science at the heart of trade and politics. He made it a policy to collect and control resources not only for the sake of knowledge but also for the advancement of the empire.   Although Linnaeus is often celebrated as modern botany's true founder, Banks has had a greater long-term impact.   It was Banks who ensured that science and imperialism flourished together, and it was he who first forged the interdependent relationship between scientific inquiry and the state that endures to this day.       Today's Garden Chore Add perlite to your soil.   Get a big bag of perlite like this oneand add it to the soil in your containers.   Seasoned gardeners swear by perlite.   If you want soilthat has good aeration, water retention and drainage, try adding, the mineral, perlite.   A naturally occurring mineral, perlite has a neutral pH level; so it won't change the soil in that way.   It's incredibly porous and it contains little pockets of space inside for air. It can also retain some amount of water while allowing excess to drain away.   (I get huge bag of perlite every year from Amazon.  I'll put a link to that in today's show notes.)       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   On this day in 2016, the Shady Acres Herb Farm closed in Chaska Minnesota after 39 years.   Shady Acres was the placeto go for plants and herbs for almost 4 decades.   Shady Acres was owned and operated by Theresa and Jim Mieseler since the mid 70s.   Theresa has started out with the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. She been put in charge of the herb garden she recalled telling her boss,   "I don't know what an herb is..."     Seven years later, Jim and Theresa started Shady Acres Herb Farm with seedlings grown in Dixie cups in their basement.     Over time, they cultivated and sold over 600 varieties of culinary herbs and vegetables. Since the closing of their farm, Shady Acres has been moving in a different direction. They're now committed to teaching others about growing plants and they do that in their monthly newsletter. You can check out their website at Shadyacres.com       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
