Program Director for Start:ME Erin Igleheart is in the studio for today's episode of Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio, along with Start:ME graduate and owner of Tutu Maniac DeAndrea Byrd. Joined by co-hosts Carol Morgan and Todd Schnick, the group gathers to discuss the Start:ME program and its impact on its participants on this Around Atlanta segment of Radio. Igleheart has a background in finance and consulting but has always had a deep love for communities and a respect for the people who make a community strong and vibrant. Igleheart began with Start:ME over four years ago as a project manager and transitioned to program director about a year ago. Start:ME is a free small business training program that helps to connect potential business owners with others, while also giving them the tools they need to succeed to build a business. The 14-session experience offers training by Emory's Goizueta Business School and has helped to accomplish: 257 small businesses served 79% of alumni actively operating 75+ Start:ME mentors 556 jobs created 30 brick and mortar stores $11.7 million in annual revenue 69% led by women 84% led by people of color Byrd is the owner of Tutu Maniac, a business that specializes in children's birthday parties. The parties range in theme from painting parties to tea parties to tutu parties for girls ages three to 11. Byrd graduated from Start:ME last year and was the recipient of a grant. Start:ME grew out of research conducted by Dr. Peter Roberts at Emory. He noticed there was a significant gap in the number of micro-businesses per capita in underserved communities. This means fewer people are opening and operating local small businesses. “We know that entrepreneurs need three things in abundance to really be successful,” said Igleheart. “They need business knowledge, they need supportive networks that they can draw upon and they need capital to get started. We also believe that entrepreneurial talent, passion and spirit are equally distributed across the population, but access to some of that knowledge, networking and capital is not.” Because of these gaps, Start:ME was created to serve communities around metro Atlanta and help its members become business owners. The organization partners with local nonprofits to build programs to serve local needs and spur entrepreneurs. Start:ME also sets up its participants to succeed in a variety of economic clients, even in the midst of a global pandemic. Byrd opened up her store-front shop right at the beginning of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Because of the social distancing and self-isolating protocols enacted to help slow the spread, brick and mortar businesses were taking a hit. Byrd quickly adjusted to the circumstances and created a party in a box! This product offered Byrd's same creative party planning expertise in a socially distanced new packaging. The boxes include party supplies and ideas for the perfect get-together. Over the course of the three-month program, Start:ME is centered around building business knowledge and creating connections. Throughout the process, students meet with both customers and competitors to gather insight and better prepare themselves for life after the program. Start:ME offers an entrepreneurial journey through 14 informative, hands-on sessions. The sessions start off with courses titled Kick-Off, IMPROV & Introductions and Business Storytelling and end with Small Business Tradeshow, Practice Loan Interview and Pitch Night. “One of the best things I got from Start:ME is the connections and the friendships,” said Byrd.“I'm still friends with people I met in Start:ME and I still speak to the mentors.” After the 14 sessions, the Start:ME team continues to support its alumni with mentor office hours, workshops, pop-up markets socials and more. After graduation, Start:ME strives to continue to help businesses grow, evolve and thrive.

Today we’re revisiting an old episode where Matt spoke with Haresh Gangwani, co-founder and CEO of Bolstra, a customer experience company based here in Indianapolis as well as Don Aquilano, co-founder and managing partner at Allos Ventures, a Venture Capital firm that invests in high-potential, early-stage tech companies in the heart of the Midwest. The interview is from all the way back in July 2017, almost 2 years to the day. We’re bringing this one back around because it’s a great insight into customer experience from 2 experts in the space. Haresh and Don walk you through why it’s important to be proactive on CX and how to do it, so you can reduce churn and increase revenue- all while making your customers happy. We thought we’d bring this episode out of the archives to revisit a huge problem every company needs to address, but many don’t know how. By the way, if you’re in the Indy area, Haresh will be pitching Bolstra at our Pitch Night on August 13th at VisionLoft. If you’d like to come and connect with Haresh and other leaders in CX go to https://powderkeg.com/events/ to get your ticket.

With 2019 well underway, our third and final Pitch Night in-between-isode should be helpful for founders busy planning their startup’s goals and milestones for the year. The subject is social impact and the positive business results it can deliver, from sales to talent acquisition, when done correctly. Corporate social responsibility has become a major concern in the world today. Customers want to patron companies that give back to their communities. In fact, a study from Deloitte found that 87 percent of consumers use social impact metrics when deciding which product to buy. Corporations, large businesses, and even startups can bolster their public images and win customers by sharing the wealth with nonprofits and other charitable organizations. This is exactly what Selfless.ly and its CEO, Josh Driver, want to help companies do. Selfless.ly’s online platform removes the logistical roadblocks that often hinder an organization’s social impact efforts, such as managing volunteer time off and matching employee donations. Made for companies of all sizes, all industries, and at all stages, Selfless.ly helps businesses master social impact and do good more easily and efficiently. Josh presented this pitch last October at our “Diversity, Inclusion, and the Future of Tech Pitch Night,” which was hosted by fellow entrepreneur Kelli Jones and featured a special panel of diversity experts in addition to our startup advisors. Josh’s pitch demonstrates why companies should be proactive about corporate social responsibility and explains how robust social impact initiatives can ultimately boost their revenue. In this episode with Josh Driver of Selfless.ly, you’ll learn: --- Why corporate social responsibility is good for a company’s bottom line. --- What Selfless.ly is doing to help organizations grow their social impact. --- How nonprofits and charities can benefit from Selfless.ly’s referral program. We’re back with another special Pitch Night episode! This time, we’re exploring what successful tech disruption looks like in an industry not typically known for innovation or adoption of new technology: food and beverage, or F&B. Specifically, can technology show us how to pour a beer better? There’s far more at stake than maximizing the taste of your favorite brew. The average draft beer system delivers a surprisingly inefficient pour. About 30 percent of every keg is wasted on average, adding up to nearly $2 billion in wasted beer each year. Josh Springer, founder and CEO of Bottoms Up Beer, invented brand new technology to fix this problem. As the name implies, Bottoms Up’s innovative draft beer dispenser fill glasses from the bottom, through a special magnetically-sealed hole in the base. The result? Beers can be “poured” faster and hands-free, waste is cut to about two percent, and businesses increase their venue by 30 percent. Josh presented this unique (and funny) pitch on how to pour a beer that maximizes profit at a recent Powderkeg event cohosted with Cintrifuse. We’ve once again included the follow-up Q&A with the evening’s advisors in this episode of the podcast. On top of providing a few laughs, it should illustrate the huge potential for tech disruption in the food and beverage space and other traditionally non-tech industries. In this episode with Josh Springer of Bottoms Up Beer, you’ll learn: --- What’s wrong with the way every restaurant and bar serves beer. --- How Bottoms Up increases its customers’ revenues by 30 percent or higher. --- The unique opportunity for advertisers built into every Bottoms Up glass. If you like this episode, please subscribe and leave us a review on iTunes. You can also follow us on Soundcloud or Stitcher. The startup scene in San Francisco is very much alive and brimming with ideas I recently had the opportunity to attend a pitch night in downtown SF. Think of it like a mini shark tank, minus Mr. Wonderful. :-) The place was packed. Adult beverages and pizza were served. I arrived early to check out the scene and network and in doing so, I met some fascinating people including: a woman who worked at LinkedIn for six and a half years before it was bought by Microsoft and became the BIG COMPANY it is today a man who puts on events for startups and was very excited to have his first one scheduled for London this summer a woman who came all the way from Ireland to pitch her idea a man who has created a sensing device that will track packages from start to finish and indicate exactly where damage occurs along the journey (if any) The majority of attendees were originally from other countries including India, Pakistan, Italy and Russia. The predominant smell in the air besides pizza and beer was hunger -- hunger for closing a deal -- hunger to make it big -- with a hefty side of money. The entire evening was fascinating to experience. If you're at all curious about what goes on at these pitch nights, today's audible will take you on the inside of one. For Episode 2 of Startup Capital, Season 2, we reached out to someone who knows the intricacies of Tallahassee's ecosystem better than anyone: Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. Elected to the mayor's office in April, 2013, Gillum has been the driving force behind a number of local initiatives, both civic and economic. Most recently, Gillum began a community-wide initiative called the Tallahassee Innovation Partnership (TIP). Spearheaded by Gillum's office, the TIP seeks to connect the city's different institutions with innovative new businesses in town. Kicking off the TIP was an innovation pitch night, which gave local entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch their startups to the community. This is a step towards solving one issue that we've identified here through Startup Capital: a disconnect between the local startup scene and many of the city's economic players in government and higher education. Two weeks after that Pitch Night, our host Lucas Lindsey sat down with Mayor Gillum for an honest conversation about Tallahassee's past, present, and future as a home for startups and entrepreneurship. Listen in to learn more about Gillum's plans for infusing the local tech scene with life, building innovation locally, and bringing new opportunity to the Startup Capital. Teacherpreneur is a program to empower teachers to solve the biggest challenges they face in their classrooms and schools. Modeled after Co.Lab's 48 Hour Launch event, Teacherpreneur helps teachers take a big idea and mold it into a basic model that they can then "pitch" to the community. Oh, and its all within 48 hours... In today's podcast we learn more about the program from Public Education Foundation's Geoff Millener & this year's Teacherpreneur pitch night winner, Kelsey Huynh from East Side Elementary. Trinitas Mhango is one of a new generation of young, would-be entrepreneurs in Malawi. She has a dream of making it big in business and she has a great idea - to mass produce and sell sanitary pads in one of the poorest countries in Africa, where millions of girls and women cannot afford proper sanitary management. The market research she has done shows it is a potentially huge market and Malawi desperately needs people like her to succeed and help grow its near bottom of the GDP league economy. There is just one big problem - she has not got the money to set up on her own. Malawi's banks won't lend her the cash she needs and even if they would, with interest rates at a staggering 40% she would never make it. But now Trinitas has a great opportunity to get the backing she needs to kick-start her business. She is going into competition at Pitch Night, where the best and brightest young entrepreneurs in the country pitch their ideas hoping to win the hearts, minds and financial support of some of the Malawi's Business “Dragons” who can back or sack their ideas. It is a huge opportunity, potentially a life-changing evening. But can she do it? What will she say to win the Dragons over? Can she stay cool, calm and collected in front of a large and fiercely critical audience? Or, will it all be too much for young Trinitas? Will her dreams of a life as a successful entrepreneur end at Pitch Night? (Photo: (L) Trinitas Mhango)
SE043: Looking for your next big hit? Tonight is your night as we pitch great songs on our Songwriters Pitch Night at The Josie Show. Radio with a purpose!
I’m back with a Very Special Episode (no, not the one where Jessie is addicted to caffeine pills) of the Creative City podcast. This time, I took my portable studio - aka laptop and mic - on location to MORTAR’s Life’s a Pitch event, where I talked to four of the program’s recent graduates about their businesses and future aspirations. Since the venue was a bar, I set up shop on the “quiet” back patio, only to be thwarted by a monsoon that decided to roll through anytime I hit record. Can you say background noise? The event was great, though, and I managed to catch up with a few of the talented folks rounding out the Spring graduating class: Rebecca Denney of Paleolicious Cincy - Catering locally produced, organic food that tastes great. paleoliciouscincy.com Katy Dietz of Green Man Twist - Soft serve ice cream with a community focus, based in Walnut Hills. facebook.com/Greenmantwist Stephanie Bohanon of Beaux Studios - A concept salon that’s combines a beauty salon, retail space, and events venue. instagram.com/beauxstudio.oh Rolandis Williams of iCleanology - Specialty cleaning services for the restaurant industry (apologies--the first part of our interview got cut off). www.icleanology.com, coming soon To learn more about MORTAR’s commitment to building communities through entrepreneurship, check out my chat with Allen Woods in episode 8 at www.creativecitypodcast.com.
