Editors - Kevin D. Ross ACE, Eric Litman, Adam Pearson and Daniel Williams The ONE PIECE editing team knew full well, going into this live-action adaptation of the beloved manga series, that they had a huge challenge on their hands.  Expectations were high and previous attempts to adapt other manga series had left those fanbases disappointed, to say the least.  Fortunately, they had a talented crew around the globe, plus ample time and resources from Netflix to finally crack the code of making a hit series that would satisfy the die-hard manga fandom. ONE PIECE follows the adventures of the Straw Hat Pirates as they explore the dangerous oceans, lands, and beyond in search of the "One Piece", a fabled treasure that will make their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, "King of the Pirates".  But the Marines are on their ship's tail, and they are not the only crew searching for the One Piece.  Armed with skills and an unbreakable friendship, the Straw Hats are ready for the journey and even more ready to fight for their dreams together.  Adapted from the legendary manga series from author Eiichiro Oda, ONE PIECE was developed as a live action series for Netflix by Matt Owens and Steven Maeda under the watchful eye of Oda. KEVIN D. ROSS, ACE Raised in the heartland of America, Kevin Ross grew up a typical bored youth in the small town of Farmington, Missouri. A product of a Norman Rockwell-like family with loving parents and four younger siblings, Ross attended the University of Missouri School of Journalism. After graduating, he headed for the lights and lure of Hollywood. He earned his MFA from the USC School of Cinema-Television and has been happily working in the film industry ever since.  Aside from ONE PIECE, Kevin has edited such shows as HALT AND CATCH FIRE (2014-16), STRANGER THINGS - S1/2 and YELLOWJACKETS (2021-23). ERIC LITMAN Pennsylvania native Eric Litman is known for his work on FINAL DESTINATION 5 (2011), AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) and STAR TREK: PICARD (2023). ADAM PEARSON Actor-turned-editor Adam has assisted on shows such as DOPESICK (2021) and THE ROOKIE (2021).  In addition to ONE PIECE, his work as an editor can be seen in BEVERLY HILLS PAWN (2014) and UFOs: THE LOST EVIDENCE (2017). DANIEL WILLIAMS In addition to working alongside Kevin Ross on ONE PIECE (2023) and YELLOWJACKETS (2023), Daniel has also assisted on THE X-FILES (2018) and SACRED LIES (2018-20). Editors - Yvette M. Amirian, ACE and Matt Friedman, ACE When it comes to learning editing in film school, who better to learn from than ACE editors?  When they aren't in the cutting rooms themselves, editors Yvette M. Amirian, ACE and Matt Friedman, ACE are in the classrooms of two of the most prestigious film schools in the world.  Yvette has returned to the institution where she received her own filmmaking education, USC, to help inform the next generation as to what they need to know about the craft, as well as the career, of editing.  At the American Film Institute, Matt asks his grad students to consider more than just how to put a story together, but to question why something works or something doesn't; never letting them forget that every frame matters. Yvette M. Amirian, ACE Yvette M. Amirian, ACE is an award-nominated film and television editor. After graduating from the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Cinema-Television, she built a successful career and has been transitioning seamlessly between editing scripted and documentary content for the better part of two decades. In 2011, she and her team received an Eddie Award nomination from the American Cinema Editors (ACE) for their work on Animal Planet's Whale Wars. In 2017, she edited and produced John Singleton's L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later for A&E, which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy (Outstanding Documentary Special). Her most recent project is an upcoming scripted feature for critically acclaimed filmmaker Robert Machoian, The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. Yvette is a proud member of the Motion Picture Editor's Guild, the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences, and ACE. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons. Matt Friedman, ACE Matt won the 2021 ACE Eddie for Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) for Palm Springs, and was nominated in 2020 for "The Farewell".  He was born in rural east Tennessee to a coal mining family living in the foothills of the Appalachians.  After graduating from Oak Ridge High School with an emphasis in Extinct Ancient Languages, Matt headed for Chicago to attend Northwestern University. Due to a series of accidental registration errors, he ended up with enough credits for a degree in Economics as well as Film. None of his college film work involved blowing up model cars, however. He finished his Econ degree at the University of Queensland, in Brisbane, Australia, where he was offered AU$100 and a Sydney snow globe by a group of Australian students if he would vote for Clinton in '92 via absentee ballot. Matt then moved to a spacious two bedroom apartment in scenic North Hollywood to begin his film career in earnest. Arriving just in time for the Northridge Earthquake and the fires and mudslides of '93, he was very lucky to begin working for a series of extremely supportive and wonderful editors, including (but not limited to!) Peter Teschner, Emma Hickox, Jill Bilcock, and Sheldon Kahn. In recent years, Matt has enjoyed cutting a variety of different types of films and television pilots, including films in Spanish and Chinese, even though he doesn't speak the languages. He now lives in the Hollywood Hills with his wonderful husband Chris and their son.   In our discussion with educators and editors Yvette M. Amirian, ACE and Matt Friedman, ACE about teaching editing in film school, we talk about: What today's editors/educators learned from their own film school experience Crafting editing curriculums, or is it curricula? She is the Ambassador for Child Protection for Save the Children India. Nandana has worked closely with children and grown-ups at UNICEF, RAHI (India's first organization for survivors of child sexual abuse), Apne Aap (ends sex-trafficking by providing education and preventing intergenerational prostitution), and Operation Smile (transforms lives of children with cranio-facial deformities), as an Ambassador and advocate for child protection. In 2019, Nandana was awarded the Last Girl Champion Award for her campaign against human trafficking and child abuse, and her tireless fight to empower marginalized girl children. Erin O’Malley is one of the coolest, raddest ladies you will ever meet. She’s a five-time Emmy nominated television and film producer and director. More importantly, she also has a healthy obsession with Broadway musicals. Which I am not mad at. If you recall the famous character Molly Shannon created on SNL, Sally O’Malley, you’ll know why I saved Erin to be episode 50! As you’ll hear me gush, Erin’s resume is extremely impressive, so saddle up. Her producing credits include Da Ali G Show starring Sacha Baron Cohen which earned a Primetime Emmy nomination; The Sarah Silverman Program; Curb Your Enthusiasm, which earned four Primetime Emmy nominations as well as four Producers Guild Award nominations; The Grinder starring Rob Lowe and Fred Savage, and One Mississippi, the critically raved about Amazon Studios series starring Tig Notaro, New Girl starring Zooey Deschanel, Single Parents staring Taran Killam, Leighton Meester, and Brad Garret, and Bless This Mess starring Lake Bell and Dax Shepard. Also as a television director, O’Malley has directed episodes of Fresh Off The Boat, Speechless, New Girl, Single Parents, Bless This Mess and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Phew, right? Empowering LGBTIQ+ and BIPOC men and women is one of her core values. Hearing her talk about her approach to the work, to the humanity of producing, was incredibly inspiring. She has been nominated for a Women’s Image Network Award for Outstanding Show Produced by A Woman for her work producing New Girl. Bless This Mess was awarded a ReFrame Stamp by Women In Film as a mark of distinction in hiring female identifying people in four out of eight key arenas in production. A graduate of USC’s School of Cinema-Television, Erin has made her roots in Los Angeles where she lives with her wife and two daughters. This week, we chat how Larry David helped her with a big learning curve, what it’s like to be responsible for 400 individual jobs, and the path of a non-writing producer in TV. No matter the rung of the ladder you happen to be on in the entertainment industry, making it in Hollywood is no easy feat. And with how our world is evolving post-pandemic, you might think it will be nearly impossible to maintain any sort of work-life balance for our foreseeable future, especially if you’re fortunate enough to reach the top rung of the ladder like today’s guest. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to not only survive but thrive while working on giant tent pole films like The Avengers series, Captain America: Civil War and Iron Man 3, or a multitude of other blockbusters, then this conversation is going to give you the inside look you’ve been waiting for. Award-winning editor Jeffrey Ford, ACE has made his career working with big name directors like Michael Mann, Joss Whedon, Anthony & Joe Russo, and Joe Johnston, and he does not sugar coat the reality that editing these films is an all-consuming endeavor. In today’s interview with Jeffrey (which was originally recorded a few years ago back in the ‘Fitness In Post’ days), he does share with us his secrets and routines for maintaining his health and family life without succumbing to bad habits and burnout. We dive deep into the methods he uses to stay energetic and creative despite the long hours, specifically maintaining consistent movement throughout his workday. He also talks about the immense importance of keeping his team rested and refreshed so they too can be productive and creative while still meeting the demanding and intense work schedules on huge tentpole films. While the conversation might not be brand new, the topics we discuss are as relevant as ever. If setting boundaries and maintaining some semblance of sanity in our post-pandemic world is a priority for you, after listening I highly recommend following up this episode with my interview with producer Janace Tashjian where we discuss the importance of setting boundaries, advocating for yourself, and asking for help. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: The story of how Jeff began his film career after graduating from USC film school and getting his first job as an apprentice editor with director James Gray and editor Dorian Harris What film school taught him about teamwork and making connections with people in the industry. The struggles he endured through years of unemployment, only working 5 days a month while making films on his own to hone his craft. His humility still leaves him surprised and enthused that people continue to let him cut their films. The extreme focus necessary to edit the film, Public Enemies with Michael Mann, and the demanding schedule and hours he endured. Jeff believes that the longer you sit in front of your screen without moving, the more it inhibits your objectivity and relationship with your audience. Why he makes time for 3 to 4 movement breaks throughout the day. The reason his standing desk has been an enormous benefit to his creativity and mental fortitude. The scheduling fix they use on the Marvel movies to avoid burnout and ensure everyone stays healthy and happy. The importance of having a work environment that provides daylight, space, and amenities to maintain health and well being. Self-assertion and setting boundaries must be built into your routine due to the competitive and intense nature of the business. On Jeff’s team, taking care of yourself is looked upon as a strength rather than a weakness. KEY TAKE AWAY #1: Keep perspective about the job by understanding that your family is your most important support system to keep you going. With work in the entertainment industry slowly beginning to trickle in and productions ramping up over the coming weeks and months, you’d think we could all just “go back to normal,” right? WRONG. The new version of post-pandemic work is going to be anything but normal (and frankly Normal. Wasn’t. Working), and for one very specific group, this is uncharted (and terrifying) territory: Parents. In the latest ‘Optimizer’ community Q&A, our community welcomes four hardworking moms in various stages of their careers in the entertainment industry. Editor Yvette Amirian (ACE), Editor Natalie Boschan, Editor/AE Monica Daniel, and Assistant Editor Bari Winter have all been simultaneously juggling busy careers while also doing their best to raise children during a global pandemic. We talk about how we can balance the vast needs of Hollywood production while still doing our best to be present parents. We discuss tips and strategies for handling this delicate balancing act. My guests also share their fears and hopes about navigating pre-pandemic expectations in a post-pandemic working world. In this very candid conversation, we cover many topics including: How can we balance the vast needs of Hollywood production and post-production when we’re still homeschooling our kids, daycare isn’t open, or we can’t afford a nanny anymore? Will working from home mean that we NEVER get any time away from the office to be a parent because of endless emails and texts where people need things 24/7? Will people be less likely to hire me again if I’m a parent working from home? Whether you are a parent or not, this conversation will address the issues of managing and sustaining Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here’s What You’ll Learn: “Real-life” insight into balancing parenting and work obligations when it feels impossible How to tackle the question of getting a nanny during a pandemic and the importance of separating work and child care duties when working from home The best ways to make sure your kids are actively engaged in learning while you work from home (so that they don’t get left behind academically) How to keep yourself healthy and avoid burnout from trying to be “supermom” (or dad) Why normal wasn’t working for parents and how we will literally kill ourselves if we try to resume the status quo The real reasons moms tend to put themselves last and feel obligated to take care of everyone else first What the “theatre of work” is and how we need to teach producers to let us manage our own time How to set boundaries when working from home by communicating clearly and confidently Productivity tips on creating effective workflows so everyone is on the same page with boundaries and communication The different standards between being a mom in the workplace versus being a dad (and how moms have to navigate that) FACT: It’s harder for moms to get hired. The School of Greatness with Lewis Howes

COMMUNICATE YOUR VISION. Being an effective leader is difficult. Some do it through fear. Some do it through understanding. And others lead with love. You could be super demanding and scary and get what you want. But is that the kind of life you want to lead? Probably not. Often, leading in a way where you understand other people’s concerns will be the most beneficial to you. There’s a lot you can learn from others. Ask yourself: how can you bring people together in a way that satisfies their needs as well as your own? For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with the legendary director Jon Chu where he shared how he communicates his vision on set. Jon Chu directed the films Crazy Rich Asians, Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, and Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Jon graduated from the USC School of Cinema-Television where he won the Princess Grace Award, the Dore Schary Award presented by the Anti-Defamation League, the Jack Nicholson directing award, and was recognized as an honoree for the IFP/West program Project: Involve. Learn how to enlist others in your vision and lead with love on Episode 805. In This Episode You Will Learn: The kind of leader Jon wants to be (1:00) The importance of synergy in creativity (1:30) The most important thing Jon has learned about communicating his vision (1:45) How to talk to people who have concerns about your vision (2:30) If you enjoyed this episode check out the show notes and more at http://lewishowes.com/810 and follow at instagram.com/lewishowes.

Welcome to Episode 1 of Products of the Mind. This episode features something that’s never been done before (to my knowledge.) Not only is this the first episode of this podcast, it’s the first podcast I’ve ever created. I knew that I wanted to talk about creativity and business, and I listened to tons of podcasts to get inspiration on how to make this the best show that I could do. And I wanted to start out with a bang. So let’s consider this not just the first episode, but also a Very Special Episode. I decided to do something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before. I approached 16 of the top podcasters, people I really admire who’ve been successful in this medium, and asked them all the same question. I’m calling this my 1 Question Interview. The question is, “When do you feel most creative?“ In this episode you’re going to hear about creativity from podcasters including Pat Flynn, John Lee Dumas, Kate Erickson, Jaime Tardy, Michael O’Neal, Omar Zenhom, and many more. It’s like The Avengers of podcasting - all your favorite heroes in one exciting adventure. The range of answers to my 1 Question Interview surprised me. Some people talked about times of the day. Some made reference to a certain type of activity. A few talked about specific places where they felt creative. But those places ranged from “sitting on my furry rug” to “traveling through North Korea." I definitely didn’t expect that one. But first, a bit about me. I’m David Lizerbram. I’m a business law strategist. Oh, and now I can add “podcaster” to the list of things I do. I podcast from sunny San Diego, California, where for the last ten or so years, I’ve been helping entrepreneurs solve problems and achieve their goals. I have a background in the creative arts - I went to USC film school (then known as the School of Cinema-Television; now the School of Cinematic Arts) and spent years playing in rock bands. But I’ve also always been fascinated by business and entrepreneurship. Over the years, I’ve found that entrepreneurs and people who consider themselves creative professionals have a lot in common. I started this podcast to have a conversation about those traits and what leads people to become innovative problem solvers and communicators. So in future episodes, I'm going to do interviews with interesting people to try to dig into that. I’m also going to do some episodes where I share some legal tips and case studies to help give a bit of guidance to my listeners. On to the 1 Question Interviews. Remember: the question is “When do you feel most creative?” The first few answers had to do with the time of day when people feel creative. Check out the show for answers from: • Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income • John Lee Dumas of EOFire • Mike Vardy of Productivityist • Anthony Tran of Marketing Access Pass • Lou Mongello of WDW Radio The next few answers had to do with places that spark creativity. • Michael O'Neal of The Solopreneur Hour • Jaime Tardy of Eventual Millionaire • Omar Zenhom of $100 MBA • Steven Shalowitz of The One-Way Ticket Show The final group is a bit of a catchall – let’s call it circumstances where one feels creative. • Elise Cripe of Elise Gets Crafty • Cliff Ravenscraft of Podcast Answer Man • Joel Boggess of The ReLaunch Show • Jordan Harbinger of The Art of Charm • Meron Bereket of Inspiring Innovation • Joon Han of Your Biz Rocks • Kate Erickson of Kate’s Take and EOFire For those playing along, the shortest answer was from Meron Bereket of Inspiring Innovation and the longest was from Steven Shalowitz of The One Way Ticket Show. I hope this got you thinking about when you feel most creative. Feel free to leave a comment on the podcast page at Productsofthemind.net or through Twitter @davidlizerbram and let me know when you feel most creative. And I guess it’s only fair that I answer the question too. So here we go: I’m David Lizerbram from Products of the Mind and I feel most creative when I’m in a conversation with someone who is sharing their insights and life experience. I don’t think most people have the ability to just sit on a remote mountaintop and come up with great ideas. Creativity comes from interacting with other people, collaborating, arguing, trying things out. Thanks for Checking Out Products of the Mind! The Betrayers (Little Brown and Company) Please welcome back to Skylight Books David Bezmozgis, the award-winning author of Free World and Natasha and Other Stories. His latest, The Betrayers is a compact saga of love, duty, family, and sacrifice from a rising star whose fiction is "self-assured, elegant, perceptive . . . and unflinchingly honest" (New York Times) These incandescent pages give us one fraught, momentous day in the life of Baruch Kotler, a Soviet Jewish dissident who now finds himself a disgraced Israeli politician. When he refuses to back down from a contrary but principled stand regarding the settlements in the West Bank, his political opponents expose his affair with a mistress decades his junior, and the besieged couple escapes to Yalta, the faded Crimean resort of Kotler's youth. There, shockingly, Kotler comes face-to-face with the former friend whose denunciation sent him to the Gulag almost forty years earlier. In a whirling twenty-four hours, Kotler must face the ultimate reckoning, both with those who have betrayed him and with those whom he has betrayed, including a teenage daughter, a son facing his own moral dilemma in the Israeli army, and the wife who once campaigned to secure his freedom and stood by him through so much. Stubborn, wry, and self-knowing, Baruch Kotler is one of the great creations of contemporary fiction. An aging man grasping for a final passion, he is drawn inexorably into a crucible that is both personal and biblical in scope. In prose that is elegant, sly, precise, and devastating in its awareness of the human heart, David Bezmozgis has rendered a story for the ages, an inquest into the nature of fate and consequence, love and forgiveness. The Betrayers" is a high-wire act, a powerful tale of morality and sacrifice that will haunt readers long after they turn the final page.  Praise for The Betrayers“The Betrayers is a moral thriller in the tradition of Bernard Malamud, but the generosity, grace, and wisdom of the writing belong entirely to David Bezmozgis. The magic of fiction is that it makes the reader care deeply about imaginary strangers, and Bezmozgis is a magician.”—Aleksandar Hemon, National Book Award finalist for The Lazarus Project “This outstanding novel definitively establishes David Bezmozgis as one of the foremost writers of his generation.”—Ben Fountain, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk “This unforgettable novel squanders no words in its brilliant, deft depictions of love, of memory, of compassion—and, ultimately, despite its title, of loyalty.”—Edith Pearlman, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award forBinocular Vision  David Bezmozgis moved from Latvia to Canada at the age of six. After studying English literature at McGill University and fine arts at the Southern California School of Cinema-Television, he created his first documentary in 1999, entitled L.A. Mohel, capturing the busy lives of three mohels (Jewish ritual circumcisers) in Los Angeles. His debut short story collection, Natasha and Other Stories, won the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best First Book and was nominated for a Governor General's Award. Bezmozgis is currently a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.

We have come to associate the internet with narratives of appealing unpredictability. We have become accustomed to scanning for the next best thing, to expecting novelty at our fingertips. We are habituated to stories of people using computers to throw established authorities into disarray: stories of surprising computer-related business start-ups, from Apple and Microsoft around 1980 through Facebook and beyond; of peculiar digital inventions taking the world by storm; of internet use by political rebels from Howard Dean to the Tea Party to the Arab Spring; of disruptive events that throw entire industries into disarray, like college students downloading music or uploading videos. The habit of throwing money at internet-related businesses in rough proportion to their air of rebelliousness persists to some degree, even if dampened by memories of the stock collapses and scandals of the early 2000s. Novelty in the digital does not surprise us; it is an expectation – at the same time that we have nearly given up on the idea of change in other in other aspects of our lives (e.g., in dysfunctional politics, our dependence on the automobile, the persistence of poverty). The Net Effect (2011) attributed this pattern in part to an American tradition of reading experiences through a romantic individualist lens. Widespread interactive computing introduced common experiences to large swathes of the population: the compulsive draw that often comes with computer use, for example, or the repeated wonder of plugging in a new gizmo that a short time ago would have been impossibly expensive or just impossible, or the cubicle dweller’s secret pleasure of discovering, on a slow day at work, something striking on computer networks that is unknown to the powers that be. Romanticism provided a framework for making sense of those experiences, and thus a way to frame computing as an exploration, not a means to an end, as a means of personal expression, as an art. This presentation elaborates on the sociology of this pattern of expectant novelty, using Papacharissi’s suggestion that the digital world offers a “habitus of the new,” with its own distinct inducements and blindspots. Bourdieu’s notion of a habitus offers a non-dualist, non-determinist way to make sense of the way digital novelty has become woven into the fabric of how we live our day to day lives. Thomas Streeter is Professor of Sociology at the University of Vermont. He has also taught for the School of Cinema-Television at the University of Southern California, and was a Member of the School of Social Science at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study. The Net Effect: Romanticism, Capitalism, and the Internet (NYU Press, 2011) is a study of the role of culture in the social construction of internet technology. His award-winning Selling the Air, a study of the cultural underpinnings of the creation of the US broadcast industry and its regulatory apparatus, was published in 1996. He edited, with Zephyr Teachout, a volume about the use of the internet in Howard Dean’s run for President, called Mousepads, Shoe Leather, and Hope, published in 2007. He has published articles and chapters in outlets ranging from the Cardozo Arts and Entertainment Law Journal to the Journal of Communication to Critical Inquiry.

Luke Y Thompson is a graduate of USC's School of Cinema Television who has been editor-in-chief and staff writer at many irreverent humor and pop-culture news sites including Nerdist, Wizard World, OC Weekly, Forbes, Topless Robot, and Deadline. "The Notorious LYT" combines a sophisticated film school approach with a deep appreciation of popular culture and cult classic films. In many ways, he's a punk rock mashup of Joe Bob Briggs and and John Bloom, but who is always himself. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/geekeratiradio/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geekeratiradio/support
