To answer that, we have two outstanding guests. Climate Change & Actionable Scientific Research: A Conversation with Dr. James Arnott, Executive Director of the Aspen Global Change Institute

While the dispute over the causes and sources of climate change continues, few doubt the need for action to deal with the consequences of climate change. And action can best be guided by findings from solid scientific research.  James Arnott, Ph.D. makes the case that science can contribute to not only policy but action. But for that to occur, science will need to be more transparent and inclusive to meet the challenge of coping with the effects of climate change. Dr. Arnott earned his doctorate in Environment and Sustainability from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from Principia College. His research explores how science can become more actionable for decision making. This involves studying how different approaches to collaboration, science translation, and funding can influence how research becomes used and to what end. Listen to his comments and responses to the following questions: Is it too cynical to argue that the failure to marshal collective efforts to deal with climate change is a matter of politics and economics, not science; that there are vested interests for maintaining the status quo, not challenges to research or the scientific method? Is it the case that even the very best science being devoted to climate change struggles to be interpreted in terms lay persons and governmental officials can comprehend fully? What is “actionable science”? How does it differ from what scientists do now and with what effect? Do you view it as something akin to what Thomas Kuhn termed a “paradigm shift” in science? If actionable science calls for researchers who either have experience with and/or understand the perspectives of those persons to whom the scientific results are presented, how might ways change in order to prepare the next generation of scientists? Actionable research in the contexts of achieving community, national, and global sustainability is compelling in many respects. How does adopting such an approach influence the attributes of those persons who lead scientific centers and laboratories with emphases on climate change?  Innovators is a podcast production of Harris Search Associates.  *The views and opinions shared by the guests on Innovators do not necessarily reflect the views of the interviewee's institution or organization.*

Joy is available to discuss her new series, as well as her overall career. Airing during FOX's Animation Domination, "Duncanville" centers around the life of 'Duncan Harris' (Poehler) an average 15-year-old boy, who is always one step away from making a bad decision. Along with Duncan lives his mom 'Annie' (Poehler), a parking enforcement officer, who dreams of being a detective someday and always has to watch Duncan, his dad 'Jack; (Burrell), who tries to be a better father figure to Duncan than his father was to him, his sister Kimberly (Lindhome), who is a normal teenager going through normal teen-phases, and his other adopted sister Jing (Osmanski). 'Jing' is also known as the moral compass of the family at 5 years old. Joy will also be seen in the action-packed DC Universe & CW's "Stargirl" as the infamous villainess 'Paula Brooks,' aka 'Tigress.' Best known for her skills in hand-to-hand combat and extensive weapons background, 'Tigress' is one of DC Universe's deadliest non-superpower villains. CW's "Stargirl" tells the story of high school sophomore 'Courtney Whitmore,' who discovers a powerful cosmic staff. After learning that her stepfather Pat Dugan (Luke Wilson) used to be a hero sidekick, she becomes the inspiration for a new generation of superheroes. Born in South Korea, and brought to the United States when she was adopted at a young age by her American parents, Joy had a drive and appreciation for the arts from the age of 3 when she began ballet lessons in her hometown of Olympia, Washington. From the very beginning of school, Joy was moved up from kindergarten to first grade after a few weeks and would to be hyper-competitive academically throughout her entire school career. After taking multiple college courses her senior year of high school, Joy would continue on to university at Principia College and graduate within 3 years with a degree in creative writing and studio art. She would then begin her career as a graphic designer and moved to Boston. After a year on the east coast, Joy moved to San Francisco where she created her own graphic design company. Having continued to dance through both high school and college, Joy continued to work on her ballet and dance skills and would book professional gigs on the side. After seeing a notice for auditions for a local production of "Our Town," and missing her performing arts side, she auditioned for the play and was cast in the lead role. Following her performance, Joy auditioned and received her MFA from UC San Diego, one of the top three professional actor training programs in the country. After relocating to Los Angeles, with her husband Corey Brill, Joy has continued worked steadily in theater, television and film, booking roles in hit projects including FOX's "The Loop," Netflix's "Santa Clarita Diet," Freeform's "The Fosters, FIRED UP, and ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUEL, to name a few. Laurence Barker is an influencer in the field of Hand Papermaking. Born in 1930, Barker went to Principia College and got his MFA from Cranbrook, where he also ended up teaching from 1960 – 1970 and ran the first classes in hand papermaking at the college level in the US. Several students (and others who visited that studio) went on to become luminaries in the field of hand papermaking. A theme that came up time and again during our conversation was the way Barker followed his intuition. After college, he wrote to Stanley Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris about the potential of studying with him. He never heard back, but he went to Paris, looked up Hayter, and he was able to study with him! Later, he wrote a letter to Dard Hunter asking whether he knew of a beater he might use to set up a papermaking studio at Cranbrook, and Dard Hunter found one for him! And after reading James Michener’s book Iberia, which describes Spain as a place centered around the book, Barker surmised that printing would follow the book, so he moved overseas and started a papermaking studio in Spain. And he was right! Enjoy our conversation. Continue reading Laurence Barker

What does improvisation bring to business and life? The idea that we are not competing. We are in agreement, working together, have each others' back and building a relationship.  Travis Thomas is an author, speaker, coach, improviser and expert at applying the cornerstone of improv - "YES AND!" - to succeed in life and business. Today, you'll learn how improvisation has shaped Travis's life and how it will shape yours. Don't miss this fun, intensly meaningful conversation. You will leave with a concrete tool that will  help you to live inspired like never before. My Main Takeaways: Being nervous means you care. As an improviser, we don't think "oh no" instead, we reframe it from nervous energy to excited energy. "You cannot progress until you say yes." The bedrock of improvisation, whether you are on a stage or the "stage of life" is Yes and... YES is acceptance (not trying to control because you can't change the facts). In improvisation, you have an understanding that no matter what the other person says, you are accepting it (YES!). The 'AND' is where you build off of the accepted truth to get to the next level. Why work from an "improv" framework? "The understanding in improv is that at no point are we competing or trying to sabotage. We are in agreement, working together, have each others' back, and creating a relationship." Imagine doing life and business in a world like THAT. Un-programming the "no but" response. It makes us fall into a victim mindset. When you hear it, let it be a red flag. Replace it with "yes and!" Be aware of BCE: Blaming, complaining or making excuses. When you catch your self BCE-ing, take ownership and ask yourself, "How would I respond if I was on purpose/my best/in the "yes and" mindset?" If you're stuck: Go back to your beliefs because they create your perspective; and your perspective informs your actions and behavior. Read a great a book that will challenge your belief about yourself and the world to raise your expectation and mental model. We influence through our interactions. Every interaction we either bless or hinder. Bless with love, forgiveness, compassion. It will positively impact. The members of teams and cultures based on improv have  people who feel safe, trusted and respected ("psychological safety"). These are the teams that thrive and have life-forming collaboration, because there is so much trust you don't have to worry. There are no mistakes. This is a key improv principle. Imagine a business or a relationship where there were no mistakes? What could you do? It's not about figuring it out. It's about saying 'yes and' now because the momentum comes from accepting it right away and taking action. Leap and the net will appear. Improv is like this African proverb; trust and know the outcome will be good even if we don't know what it is. Get a copy of Travis's book Three Words for Getting Unstuck: Live Yes And! I was a guest on Travis' Live Yes And! podcast. Check it out here.  Care less about what people think about you and care more about what is purposeful to you.   TRAVIS THOMAS'S LIVE INSPIRED. 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. 2. Tomorrow you discover your wealthy uncle shockingly dies at the age of 103; leaving you millions. What would you do? The first annual Yes! Fest. I want to help inspire to put on an event that are youth oriented, because everyone tells me they wish they had this when they were a teen. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? A collection of letters that my wife and friends have written me and a book that, when I was the assistant coach at Principia College, my players each wrote a page about the impact I had on them. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? Jesus. "Hey Jesus, look where we are? Is this what you meant? What is your one suggestion to get on the path that you know we should be on." 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? It is also the hardest advice for me to take. Care less about what people think about you and care more about what is purposeful to you. 6. Looking back, what advice would you give yourself at age 20? Don't care what people think. Don't worry about the outcome. You know what you're passionate about. You know whats in your heart. Don't be rational. Don't be realistic.   7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence. How do you want yours to read? He never stopped growing and he tried to do his best everyday. *** If you enjoyed today’s episode: Subscribe (automatically get new episodes), rate & review (help spread the word!) this podcast anywhere you get your podcasts. Back in 1990, the first national Sun Race attracted teams of solar car designers/builders/drivers in vehicles lugging 300+ pounds of lead acid batteries. Cross-country solar racing today is lighter, smarter, and still attractive to college teams from across the U.S. Gail Lueck was a student on a solar car team in 2001. She now coordinates the American Solar Challenge Formula Sun Grand Prix - and talks with Earthworms about this luminous and influential event. Two teams in the KDHX listening area join this conversation too. Jackson Walker represents the Ra 9 solar car team from Principia College in Elsah Illinois. John Schoeberle represents the Solar Miner car team from Missouri S & T University in Rolla Missouri. Today's Earthworms guests talk with us from qualifying events at Pittsburg International Raceway. This conversation illuminates experiences that are bringing solar cars into the mainstream. What a trip for all participants! YOU can see the cars and meet the racers on Monday August 1 in St. Louis! This Checkpoint Rally is hosted by the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site and Grant's Farm - part of an historic partnership this year with the National Park Service. During the 1,975 mile American Solar Challenge run, from July 30-August 6, racing teams will stop at 9 National Park Service sites in 7 states, celebrating the NPS Centennial. Good luck to our KDHX area Solar Racing teams! Special THANKS to Lauren Koske, Earthworms summer intern engineer. Music: Cadillac Desert, by William Tyler performed at KDHX July 2013.
