It's Father's Day and this week we are dissecting the final entry into the original Step Father franchise with the low-budget horror sequel directed by Guy Magar, starring Priscilla Barnes and Robert Whitman doing his best Terry O'Quinn impression as he slips into the shoes of the murderous Step Father. This time he's back to get that perfect family he won't kill but "standing in his way" is his new paraplegic step son Andy (bound to a wheel chair psychosomatically) who has a knack for hacking, atari, and being the future head of the CIA and Father Brennan; a Catholic Priest who likes to hang out with Andy and serve as a victim later in the movie. Povitsky goes home to Skokie, Illinois to understand why her unique relationship with her parents motivated her to become a comedian. Documentary footage is intercut with Povitsky’s sharp stand-up, giving audiences a hilarious look into her origin story. She is out to prove that she wouldn’t be the mess she is if it weren’t for her parents. Filmed at the Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles and over four different shows — mainly as an excuse for her to wear four different outfits — Povitsky’s material explores deep existential questions, such as why she’s like a slice of pizza in the bedroom, or why her ex-boyfriend’s wife blocked her on Facebook. The special also includes cameos by Christine Taylor, Andrew Friedman and Priscilla Barnes. A fixture of the LA comedy scene, Povitsky most recently starred opposite Kat Dennings in the series “Dollface,” which has been renewed for Season 2. She also co-created, co-starred and executive produced the show “Alone Together,” which ran for two seasons. Povitsky was named one of Variety’s “10 Comics to Watch,” and performed at the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, returning to the showcase that launched her career as a New Face in 2013. She’s had recurring roles on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” “Love,” and “Difficult People.” Additionally, she guest-starred in “Brooklyn 99,” Comedy Central’s “Workaholics” and “Key & Peele,” and “Lady Dynamite.”

Most of the crew has been granted shore leave for this week. It’ll be up to the Grease/Ointment/Brain and El Captain to make sure nothing goes awry aboard the USS Wetfloater. Curiosity gets the best of the two as the reach back into the 80s for yet another underwater base film. They’re so excited they just can’t wait for the rest of the crew to watch it. This week they dive into the 1989 film about an underwater station, with aliens. The Abyss? No strangely not, it’s Lords of the Deep. It stars Bradford Dillman and Priscilla Barnes. Directed by Mary Ann Fischer and written by Howard R. Cohen, this sci-fi tale is one we’ve basically seen before. Stay tuned for the Phantom Zone where Jamie connects the movie back to Ed Harris’ Phantom, movie trivia, Subs Worldwide where Kyle discusses underwater bases, and submarine news. All of this jam-packed into the 71st installment of Submersion!

In this episode, I interview my friend and former teammate, Priscilla Barnes.  She is a recently tenured Professor at Indiana University with her PhD in Public Health.  She is also actively involved in her community as a group fitness instructor at the local YMCA.   I had so much fun chatting with her.  She is this positive, inspiring, multi-dimensional person who I am so grateful to know and I’m excited to share our conversation with everyone.   It really energizes me to know that she out there doing the work she is doing because it centers around creating connections and forming community. We talk about the roots of these values and explore how they shape her life and her passions right now. We also talk about what how she is striving to find balance.  And how a dear friend of hers is helping her to do so. (I love this part!)
