How Acting Taught Me About Metabolic Health

EPISODE #64If you're a Mom, you may be aware of the concept of “Mom fails,” which is just a part of the job. We learn from them and move on. In general, I believe that learning from “fails” is a super important part of being an evolving human. In today's episode #64 — audio only, I'm drawing a parallel between making metabolic health improvements and a very challenging project I took on eight months ago. Specifically, I'm offering seven lessons learned from “acting fails” after a return to acting stage after a 33-year hiatus. In May of 2024 I auditioned for a significant role in a four-person play and was cast! We just wrapped three weeks of performances of The Last of the Red Hot Lovers on Sunday and it was a HECK of an experience, complete with hard work, laughter, tears, deer in headlights fear and more. Sure, I'd been on stage hundreds of time as a dancer, but the part where you're delivering lines in real time to a live audience (which may laugh at different sections each night or not at all), is a leveled up experience! My hope is that if you have specific behavioral or outcome changes on which you'd like to focus to improve your metabolic and overall health, that my recent lessons learned will help frame this process for you. In other words, this is also a list of what I wish I'd known, but the discovery — and those actor fails, was part of what made the process so very rewarding. That and an incredible cast, director and theater team who were all so patient and mentored me.Give it a listen and let me know what you think! Also, if you'd like to engage in a 15-minute complimentary consult to ask me questions and/or find out if we're a fit to work together to help you along your metabolic health journey, simply reach out.Be nourished y'all! And don't be a stranger. I love hearing from listeners — send your questions, comments and show ideas. Santé.PS - going forward my solocasts will be audio only and I'll use video when I ‘m conducting an interview. On that note, February's episode #65 will be a videocast as I have a guest I'm super excited about.SUBSCRIBER CONTENTSubscribers receive an email the moment the show is live and in addition to show notes and links, it includes my Fine Recipe, Fine Find and Fine Read each month. What percentage of Americans do you think lose sleep fretting about money matters in the middle of the night? (Hint, it's well over the majority!) When I was livin' it up in San Francisco working in the wine industry, I managed to rack up some impressive debt, and it frequently impacted my slumber. Over the years there were other financial issues such as worry over estate planning once my son was born and then Covid came and tanked the stock market and subsequently sent interest rates up and inflation especially sky high.Sleep is a critical factor in the body's ability to function optimally and repair itself; in other words, it's a cornerstone of metabolic health. Which is why in today's episode #63 of The Nourishment Mindset, we're talking with a financial expert who wants to help YOU get a better night's sleep. (This is a pod-only episode as we're in the middle of a move and I'm also rehearsing for a play so I didn't elect to video edit.)Meet CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy,® Accredited Tax Preparer® and my husband, Patrick Huey. He's a self described “comprehensive financial concierge for real people” and offers plenty of sound, actionable advice as you prepare for 2025.Patrick discusses how to cultivate financial health, what we should and shouldn't worry about and most importantly, how to find balance when it comes to making, saving, spending and giving money. We talk about how to assess financial health, determine if you would benefit from working with a financial advisor and what to look for in your search for a good fit.“Everyone has a plan until you ask them to produce it.” - Patrick Huey, owner of Victory Independent PlanningWe also emphasize the importance of getting that second opinion if you already have your money house in order. I recently had a dentist tell me I needed a freakin' root canal. After seeking a couple of second opinions, I learned that there's nothing wrong with my tooth after performing a simple a cold test with an ice cube at home! While it's standard practice to get a second opinion in medical matters, it's much more rare in the world of finance. If you walk away with one takeaway from this episode, take this: get a second opinion on your financial health, which is significantly more comprehensive than your investments! There are so many money managers out there who do just that — focus solely on investment accounts, leaving estate, tax, health and other planning to others… Or sadly and commonly, no one.Financial health is about so much more and in this episode, you'll learn about Patrick's SMART® approach to gliding into retirement and much more.****I'm thrilled to offer Nourishment Mindset subscribers this special, no obligation offer through January 15: a complimentary signed shipped copy of Patrick's Seven Pillars of Financial Wisdom to help you determine if you're getting the maximum benefit from your current approach to financial health. To receive one, simply email me. (FavorFat@gmail.com)FINE READS-For those who want a more comprehensive read, Patrick spent nearly a decade crafting only the book he could write. AND didn't toss me off our Camas, WA balcony to the coyotes the night I gave him this feedback after reading the manuscript: “There's a lot here. But you need to start over from an organization stand point.”History Lessons for the Modern Investor takes a rollicking romp through the past helping you learn important lessons from historical figures to become a better investor today. For example, Julius Caesar, courtesy of some heavily armed guys in togas, discovered that mental shortcuts can lead to disappointing results. He learned it the hard way, but you don't have to. Nicolaus Copernicus didn't think the universe revolved around him—rare for a genius of his time. His economic theory is the secret to funding a long retirement. And you won't risk getting burned at the stake…To check out all of his books including a travel thriller, visit Patrick's author page.FINE RECIPE with a FINE FIND- Dixie's Go To Tuna Salad with Sea SeasoningI'm combining my Fine Recipe and Fine Find this month since this sea seasoning adds flavor and an essential trace mineral, iodine. I love Maine Coast Sea Seasonings and regularly use their organic triple blend.Sometimes you need a quick, healthy fix and my Go To Tuna Salad is one of my favorites! Serves one so feel free to multiply for more mouths. Add everything together, stir and enjoy:1.One can of tuna, preferably wild caught and in either olive oil or water;2.Mix in 1 generous TB avocado oil mayo — Primal Kitchen and Sir Kensington's are my preferred brands (no stanky seed oils - traditional mayo always has ‘em even if they advertise “olive oil” on the front so check those ingredients);3.Chop 1 mini cucumber (or a half of a regular one) and toss in;4.Add 1tsp Dijon if you enjoy mustard and/or a couple TB finely chopped nuts;5.Generously salt with a high quality brand such as Redmond.6.Consider adding a Sea Seasoning with iodine to support thyroid health and add delicious flavor!PS - If you happen to live in SW Florida, please support local arts come see Last of the Red Hot Lovers, a comedy about a married man's midlife crisis by Neil Simon. We're playing at the Marco Island Center for the Arts theater January 8-26. My character, Bobbi Michelle, is a nutty out of work night club singer who takes medicinal weed instead of tranquilizers because she has this inability to swallow pills. She's essentially harmless — sweet and sexy, but also super ditzy, and her singing is um… you'll see. For more, check out the features in Coastal Breeze and Marco Eagle. This is a public episode. Today, on American TV Icons, Alikona Bradford interviews, we feature longtime veteran Linda Lavin. Born in Portland, Maine to a musically-inclined family (her mother was once an opera singer) and on stage from the age of 5, singer/actress Linda Lavin graduated from The College of William and Mary with a theatre degree. She pounded the New York pavements in the early 1960s searching for work following some stock roles in New Jersey, and gradually made a dent within the New York musical comedy scene with roles in "Oh, Kay!" (1960), "A Family Affair," (1962), "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman" (1966) (her standout number was "You've Got Possibilities") and "On a Clear Day, You Can See Forever" (1966). She also won kudos for her straight acting roles in "Little Murders" (1969 Drama Desk award) and "Last of the Red Hot Lovers" (1969 Tony nomination). A one-time member of Paul Sills' Compass Players comedy troupe back in the late 1950s, she served as a replacement in Sills' "Story Theatre" Broadway production in 1971. Television beckoned in the 1970s and utilized her singing talents in a small-screen version of Damn Yankees! (1967) starring Phil Silvers and Lee Remick. After a one-season false start as Detective Janice Wentworth on the sitcom Barney Miller (1975), it did not take long for the talented lady to become a household name in another. As the titular waitress/mother in the sitcom Alice (1976), based on the award-winning film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) starring Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, Lavin won deserved stardom. During the nine seasons (1976-1985) the show was on the air, she nabbed two Golden Globe awards and an Emmy nomination. Ever the singer, she even warbled "There's a New Girl in Town" over the opening credits of the show to the delight of her fans. Following this success, Linda lavished her attentions once again on the stage. She earned renewed respect, in addition to several critic's awards, for her diversified Broadway work in "Broadway Bound" (1987 Tony award), "Death Defying Acts" (1995 Obie award), "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1998 Tony nomination: as the high-strung Mrs. Van Daan) and "Tales of the Allergist Wife" (2000 Tony nomination). More recently, she appeared in Carol Burnett's autobiographical play "Hollywood Arms" (2002) portraying Burnett's grandmother. The piece was co-written by Burnett's late daughter, Carrie Hamilton. Linda received excellent reviews the first time around for her stage work in "Collected Stories" (2000). She later appeared in a PBS-TV version of Collected Stories (2002) and in 2010 revived it on Broadway, earning a Tony nomination for her efforts. She has also occasionally directed for the stage. Linda was married and divorced twice to actors -- Ron Leibman and Kip Niven -- and in 2005 married her third husband, actor Steve Bakunas, who is also an artist and musician. Since her "Alice" heyday, the actress has again found series work, albeit the short-lived Room for Two (1992) and Conrad Bloom (1998). She has also been seen in penetrating guest parts on such established series as "The Sopranos", "Law & Order" and "The O.C." (recurring). Media superstar Mancow jumps in the passenger seat for "My Dinner with Mancow (Part One): An intimate conversation over hot dogs"(at Irving's for Red Hot Lovers in Wilmette). I've worked with Mancow off and on for years, and remain in awe over how he builds and puts on a radio show. We talk about radio, specifically Mancow's time away from the industry before returning to host the Loop's morning show: "I walked away... left a TV show... left some radio stations... I was done. I didn't miss it." We also talk about what else is on the dial: "I haven't listened to another radio show in a decade... I was shocked at how awful it was." "The new reality of my world--and your world--is really awful." Mancow's earliest memories of rock are discussed, from his first concert to the Kinks song that changed everything for him. He also said we're living in dark times, and explains how he's responding to it: "I think this is it. I think this is the end of it. Something has to give. ... I want to be the band playing as the Titanic sinks."

I'm Lindsay Price, resident playwright for Theatrefolk. Hello, I hope you're well. Thanks for listening. Today we have an interview with another Theatrefolk author and composer, Kristin Gauthier, who wrote the music for both Shout! and ...and a Groundhog in a Pear Tree. But first, let's do some Theatrefolk news. There's a new freebie in town for Theatrefolk. It's kind of hidden. It's not out there yet with sparkly lights and choreographed numbers, but it is out there. And it's free and it's for you. It's another great resource for teachers and it's called Theatrefolk Theatre Trivia! What's that you say? Well, the foundation is an online database of over 1,000 theatre trivia questions and answers in 14 categories. Yes, I'm going to say it again, over 1,000 theatre trivia questions and answers. Everything from Greek theatre, to commedia, to modern, to play quotes, to playwrights, to true and false questions. And we're going to be rolling out a variety of ways that you can use this online database. Right now, you can go to Twitter and follow @theatretrivia. That's @theatretrivia and when you do that you get a random theatre trivia question in the morning with the answer for that question showing up in the afternoon. New question everyday. And then you can also go to trivia.theatrefolk.com - look for this in the show notes - and there you can print your own Q&A sheet with a random set of theatre trivia questions perfect for a class activity. And with each answer there's a link to further source material perfect for follow-up discussion. I know, it's awesome. Now, as I said, this is a rolling project. That means we're going to be rolling out more ways to use this database so keep trivia.theatrefolk.com in your bookmarks. There's more to come. And please always remember and don't ever forget the places in which you can find this podcast. We post new episodes every Wednesday at theatrefolk.com and our Facebook page and Twitter and you can subscribe to TFP on iTunes. Search for us on Theatrefolk. This is very theatre-y. I am backstage [and we're] precisely in the basement of the Showboat Festival Theatre with Kristin Gauthier. Hello, Kristin. Kristin: Hello. Lindsay: And Kristin has very kindly agreed to talk before she goes on this afternoon in today's performance of Last of the Red Hot Lovers by Neil Simon, which she happens to be performing with well-known Theatrefolkean Craig Mason. So we know you for your composing that you've done for us for ...and a Groundhog in a Pear Tree and Shout! But we're going to talk today about not your composing hat but your acting hat. Kristin: Okay. Lindsay: Sound good? Kristin: Good. Lindsay: Yes. All right? Kristin: Okay. Lindsay: Well, the first thing I want to talk about is like we're in pre-show so do you have any pre-show rituals? Is there anything that you do before a show? Kristin: I don't think anything really specific or really important. I like to be at the theatre an hour beforehand. I like to have that time to sort of leave the world behind and sort of get into the world of the theatre and be with the people that I'm going to be performing with. But I don't really use that first half hour for too much if it's not a musical. I would use that to warm up my voice if I was singing, but I like that time to sort of relax and then I stretch a little bit when...

Arianne Zucker, who was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2010, portrays unlucky-in-love Nicole Dimera, a former model, on NBC’s "Days of our Lives." Zucker, the quintessential Southern California native, was discovered at age 16 by a modeling scout from It Models. She began modeling in Los Angeles where she shot several clothing catalogues and campaigns. Her career later took her to such places as Paris, Japan, Australia, and New York. As Zucker’s modeling career prospered, so did her interest in television. She appeared in several national commercials for Mazda, Miata, McDonald’s and Burger King. Zucker decided to settle back down in Los Angeles and began her studies as an actress at Pierce College. It was there that she first acquired her love for theater. She was involved in several workshops that included performances in Beth Henley’s "Crimes of the Heart" and Neil Simon’s "Last of the Red Hot Lovers." She continued her studies at the highly reputable Howard Fine Studios and recently finished a two-year program of scene study improv with Stephen Book. Zucker got her first role in a student film at AFI (American Film Institute), and two months after shooting, auditioned for the role of Nicole Walker on the long running soap “Days of our Lives.” Four months later, Zucker became the newest member of the cast and won the Soap Opera Digest Award in 2004 for Outstanding Villainess. In recent months, Zucker has become ambassador for Habitat for Humanity in the San Fernando Valley. She will soon be traveling to Philadelphia and Detroit, among other cities, where she will be leading their charity builds. She has also participated in numerous USO Tours, including visiting bases in Southern California and Guantanamo Bay. The non-profit organization Success for Kids (www.sfk.org) is also close to her heart and she has spent time mentoring children in a structural development program.
