In this podcast, Iain Webb, Director of The Sarasota Ballet shares his inspiring journey from taking his first dance steps in Yorkshire, England to leading one of America's most dynamic ballet companies. Speaking from his office - surrounded by his collection of ballet books and signed photographs from ballet luminaries (watch the video) - Iain reflects on his lifelong passion for the art form and his incredible experience working with so many ballet greats. Listen as Iain shares special moments with ballet icons Sir Frederick Ashton, Dame Ninette de Valois, Dame Alicia Markova and Sir Anthony Dowell. From his time performing with The Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet and The Royal Ballet to meeting his wife, former principal dancer Margaret Barbieri, Iain's journey is filled with captivating stories. Iain discusses rising through the ranks, to leaving the stage and working with Matthew Bourne as Rehearsal Director for Swan Lake and Ballet Master with K-Ballet Company in Japan, before becoming Director of The Sarasota Ballet in 2007, a role in which he has masterfully blended respect for ballet's history with a forward-looking vision for the company's future. Under Iain's leadership, The Sarasota Ballet has flourished with his dedication to preserving Sir Frederick Ashton's legacy while expanding the company's repertoire with contemporary works. One of the achievements of his tenure has been The Sir Frederick Ashton Festival in 2014, held to mark the 25th anniversary of Ashton's passing. The festival drew national and international praise. Earlier this year, the company embarked on their first international tour to London's Royal Opera House presenting Ashton Celebrated. This tour brought Iain full circle, returning to his home country and presenting a programme of works from The Royal Ballet's founding choreographer and one of the most influential dance figures of the 20th century. Iain's commitment to honouring ballet's rich heritage with Sir Richard Aston's works while nurturing new talent ensures Sarasota Ballet's continued prominence in the dance world. Today on the show I am overjoyed to share a conversation with Luc Jacobs. Luc is well known for his work as a dancer and then Rehearsal Director of the Batsheva Dance Company aka my favourite dance company for 18 years. Needless to say I was busting with excitement to talk to him and he delivered very much the kind of funny wig out I expected regarding what is dance or movement really, how he likes to choreograph, how sensation doesn't have a weight and his epic career that only continues to expand since he is now doing Sleep No More with Punchdrunk!!!!! This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra speaks with Terence Marling, Artistic Director at COMMON conservatory. A Chicago native, Terence trained at the Ruth Page School under the direction of Larry Long. Upon leaving, Marling danced and choreographed at a wide variety of both domestic and international dance companies, including serving as Rehearsal Director at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Director at Hubbard Street 2. In September of this past year, Terence became Founder and Artistic Director of COMMON conservatory, which hopes to serve as a launching pad for the future dancers of tomorrow. Terence is a seasoned dancer and choreographer, who brings a wise perspective to the dance industry. His goal is to see young dancers succeed professionally in an industry that grows more exclusive by the day, and he has established his conservatory to achieve that end. On the podcast, Terence discusses the origins of his company and why he feels that a conservatory like COMMON is vital in today’s dance landscape. Along the way, he also shares some invaluable wisdom around the importance of networking, having a willingness to learn and evolve, and so much more.   Moving Quotes: “I’m 44 years old, and I’m still a student of dance. I’ve been dancing since I was 6, and I’ve been dancing the whole time. And there’s so much to learn." “We have to have dancers nowadays who are willing to advocate for themselves — who are willing to build their own networks. And the more people you have reach to, the more opportunities you’re going to have. It’s just that simple." “It’s a difficult thing for some young choreographers to take ahold of — that your success is measured by how well you communicate in front of a room and the energy that you create. If you come in unsure, you’re only going to make an unsure piece." “[When people leave my performances,] I want them to feel that they’ve been able to detach from the every day." “Every single contact that you make in a dance situation is important to keep. In order to maintain those relationships, it’s a good idea to just reach out and check in." “The people that end up being really successful are those people that communicate well." “Thinking while watching dance is great, but unfortunately, I think a lot of the dance that is created today asks almost too much thinking of the audience." “What I’m finding is that, while training for dancers has become better and better over the years, unfortunately, the jobs have become fewer and fewer."   Bullet Points (w/ timestamps) - Highlighting key topics discussed: 2:54: Terence discusses the origins of COMMON conservatory and his vision for the conservatory. 4:52: Marling explains the importance of choosing a space near central Chicago. 7:05: Marling explains why he believes a conservatory like COMMON is crucial for dance professionals in the modern dance landscape. 11:58: Terence shares some incredible words around the importance of networking within the dance industry. 13:54: Marling discusses some of his past and present choreographed works. 16:39: Terence describes his typical process (or lack thereof) when mapping out a piece of choreography and retells the story around his first ever choreographed work. 19:25: Terence describes how he wants his audience to feel after leaving one of his performances and discusses the danger of overcomplicating choreographed pieces. 21:58: Marling shares some sound advice for aspiring choreographers around gaining experience and being bold. 26:35: Terence gives some tips for dancers who are looking to break into today’s dance scene. 31:31: Terence rounds out the discussion by sharing his hopes and dreams for COMMON conservatory and why he believes it will be a success.   Bullet List of Resources –  Terence Marling LinkedIn   COMMON conservatory Company Website Instagram Facebook

My guest today is Matthew Rushing. Not only has Matthew been an outstanding dancer with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater since 1992, he has also choreographed three pieces for the company and became the Rehearsal Director and Guest Dancer in 2010. Matthew was 12 years old when he first saw the Ailey company perform and remembers being transformed; he saw his life danced in front of him and fell in love with the idea of the company! The clarity that followed was not that he simply wanted to be a professional dancer, but that he specifically wanted to dance in this company! 5 years later, at age 17, Matthew manifested his dream. Matthew has a huge heart for young people in the arts, so along with all the classes he teaches, he co-founded the ASAP Mentoring Program, pairing Ailey students with Ailey professionals. As part of the 60th anniversary of the company, a video was made of Matthew dancing “I Wanna Be Ready” (a male solo section from the dance “Revelations”). Matthew danced this piece in Alvin Ailey’s childhood church, in Rogers, Texas, which was both exhilarating and humbling for Matthew. It’s breathtakingly beautiful and Matthew says he couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to thank Mr. Ailey, who changed his life and gave him wings to fly. Check out the links below for the Alvin Ailey website, where you will find photos, interviews and video footage of Matthew’s magnificent work with the company. There are also YouTube links of excerpts of Matthew’s choreography, and a link to Matthew giving an innovative keynote speech to the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts graduating class of 2015. Do yourself a favor and watch it, watch all the YouTube footage of Mathew dancing - he is exquisite and will uplift, inspire and maybe even move you to tears!!! Enjoy the podcast!
