Based on Finn's short film Laura Hasn't Slept (2020), the film stars Sosie Bacon as a therapist who witnesses the bizarre suicide of a patient, then goes through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences that lead her to believe she is experiencing something supernatural. It also features Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Kal Penn, and Rob Morgan, as well as Caitlin Stasey reprising her role from Laura Hasn't Slept. A feature adaptation of Finn's short was announced in June 2020, and the cast was added in October 2021. Principal photography began that month in New Jersey and ended in November. Originally set for release on the streaming service Paramount+, distributor Paramount Pictures opted to release the film theatrically after positive test screenings. Smile premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 22, 2022, and was released in the United States on September 30. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and grossed over $217 million worldwide on a budget of $17 million. A sequel, Smile 2, is scheduled to be released in October 2024. The Ring is a 2002 American supernatural horror film directed by Gore Verbinski and written by Ehren Kruger. Starring Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, David Dorfman, and Brian Cox, the film focuses on Rachel Keller (Watts), a journalist who discovers a cursed videotape that causes its viewers to die seven days later. It is a remake of Hideo Nakata's 1998 film Ring, based on the 1991 novel by Koji Suzuki. The Ring was theatrically released in the United States on October 18, 2002, by DreamWorks Pictures. It was a box-office success, grossing $249.3 million worldwide on a $48 million budget, making it one of the highest-grossing horror remakes of all time. The Ring received mixed-to-positive reviews, with critics in particular praising the atmosphere and visuals, Bojan Bazelli's cinematography, Verbinski's direction and the performances of the cast (particularly Watts). At the 29th Saturn Awards, the film won in two categories: Best Horror Film and Best Actress (for Watts). The film is the first installment of the American Ring series, and is followed by The Ring Two (2005) and Rings (2017). The success of The Ring inspired American remakes of several other Asian and Japanese horror films, including The Grudge (2004) and Dark Water (2005). Plot Teenage girls Katie and Becca discuss an urban legend about a cursed videotape that causes whoever views it to die in one week. That night, Katie, who viewed it one week ago, is killed by an unseen force. At Katie's funeral, her mother asks her sister Rachel, a Seattle-based journalist, to investigate her daughter's death. Rachel discovers that Katie's friends all died in bizarre accidents at the same time as Katie's death. Rachel visits the Shelter Mountain Inn, where Katie and her friends saw the tape. She finds and views the tape; it contains strange and frightening imagery. She then receives a phone call from an unknown caller who whispers, "Seven days". Though initially skeptical, Rachel quickly begins to experience supernatural occurrences linked to the tape.

David Dorfman and his collaborators were scheduled to present their work, (A)way out of my body, in 2020. Due to the pandemic now Two years later they were able to bring this work to the festival. (A)Way Out of My Body uses “out of body” experience as a metaphor for our times and our body politic. DDD's bodies propel themselves through space and time, attempting to pass the barrier of reality and plight into the realm of positivity and growth. Stephanie Batten Bland brought her Company SBB with the work: Embarqued: Stories of Soil. Originally this performance was scheduled to be shown outside but due to the high temperatures the show was moved into the Bates College Schaeffer theater. Embarqued: Stories of Soil is a dance-theatre work centered around a transformative shipmast inviting ˈmīɡrəˌtôrē/ reflections, revealing post-colonial foundations and mythology. Through questioning existing relationships to memorials - they call up all who made our united history, enabling audiences to viscerally and holistically connect our country both forwards and backwards in space and time.

There she was privileged to work with many choreographers, including Bill T. Jones, David Dorfman, Bebe Miller, Ralph Lemon and a host of others.Robin began choreographing in 1990 and in 1994 formed her own group, Dancing People Company, based in Minneapolis. Both of these endeavors created strong connections between the professional company dancers and the community it served. DPC’s work in Oregon was supported by the Oregon Community Foundation, the Oregon Arts Commission, the Carpenter Foundation, the City of Ashland, and many others.During the 20 years of her directorship at DPC Robin choreographed over 50 works and brought the company on tour to Poland, Russia, Belarus, and Japan as well as traveling in the USA. David Dorfman is the Southwest Sales Leader for Tektronix. He transitioned out of the Navy’s shipbuilding Project Management community into a role that he quickly realized wasn’t the best fit. He found his way to a career in sales where he was able to find his true calling, working in some of America’s top R&D laboratories to service their needs for testing and measurement equipment. We talk a lot about the early mistakes he made as a civilian, including a costly mistake he made with his first hire. David’s experience really highlight the importance of a solid hiring plan when hiring for a critical positions, and specifically the costs to the business and customers within a sales territory when you’re not able to ramp up a new hire in the expected timeline. Bradley-Morris has tackled this topic in the past, specifically when we hosted our Contingency Webinar about the cost of slow time-to-fill. With some big changes in the job-seeker landscape these days, it’s going to be more important than ever for companies to have a plan for how their organizations will continue to drive growth while managing their needs for full-time employees. Getting this wrong can result in lost productivity, a huge management headache, and unhappy customers. At the end, David shares some advice for job seekers who might be about to transition; everyone's story is going to be different. If you find yourself in a rocky situation, take a breath. The adversity faced in the first few years, the things you will learn about yourself and your professional skills will be worth the frustration. We’re continuing our scary movie month this week with a super creepy movie remake, 2002’s The Ring. This one is a tale as old as time. A reporter investigates her niece’s mysterious death, she finds a weird VHS tape, she watches the tape, she is cursed to die in seven days. I’ve seen it happen a thousand times. The VHS tape dates this movie a little bit, but it is still a really entertaining flick. We get an emotionless child and a jangly walking female monster to keep the tone very unsettling. Whomever cast David Dorfman as Aidan deserves an award because he is one of the spookiest kids in cinema history. Why would Rachel bring the tape back to her house? Why was she so quick to show the tape to Noah? Did the cameraman that filmed the tape and the editor that cut it together die a week after it was created? Who did they pass on the copy of the tape to? If you are the kind of person that gets scared easily, you might want to listen to this episode with a dog in the room.

How does an author craft a work that speaks across the boundaries of dance studies, Jewish studies and gender studies? What does it mean for dance to function as a site for probing complex questions of racial, ethnic and cultural identity? How do choreographers respond to the prompt, “make a Jewish dance?” What does all of this have to tell us about the ways in which Jewish identities show up onstage both historically and contemporarily? I was grateful to engage these questions with dancer, choreographer and historian, Rebecca Rossen (pronounced “Ross – in”,) author of Dancing Jewish: Jewish Identity in American Modern and Postmodern Dance (Oxford University Press, 2014). Rebecca’s groundbreaking work probes the ways in which American Jewish choreographers use dance as a site to interrogate personal and collective identities while articulating social and political agendas and challenging stereotypes. Rossen critically engages with the work of Anna Sokolow, Pauline Koner, David Dorfman, Liz Lerman and others in examining how they use dance as a space for the creative construction, imagining and re-imagining of Jewish identities. Including over 50 photographs and a companion website with video clips, Dancing Jewish is a resource for dance educators and historians as well. Rebecca Rossen is Assistant Professor of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at Austin. A dance historian, performance scholar, and choreographer , her research interests include modern and postmodern dance, stagings of identity in physical performance, and the relationship between research and practice. Her own choreography has been presented in venues throughout her hometown of Chicago, as well as in Cleveland, Philadelphia, and Israel. Learn more about your ad choices. How does an author craft a work that speaks across the boundaries of dance studies, Jewish studies and gender studies? What does it mean for dance to function as a site for probing complex questions of racial, ethnic and cultural identity?
