This week, Les chats with writer Eric Holmes about the new recording of Wild About You, the musical for which he wrote the book alongside music and lyrics by Chilina Kennedy. In addition to wonderful performances by the original album's all-star cast, the new edition includes two newly recorded bonus tracks, songs written for the show but not included on the original recording. Wild About You – World Premiere Recording: Deluxe Edition in digital and streaming formats on Friday, September 27. In Wild About You, main character Olivia finds herself at a life-or-death crossroads. As she faces the fallout of her relentless need to please, the true extent of the chaos she has woven in her life becomes painfully clear. In a race against time, she sifts through the poignant memories of her three great loves, seeking the key to untangling her past. With every revelation, she edges closer to a second chance, driven by the desperate hope of reuniting with the love of her life – her son. Eric was a writer on the critically acclaimed TV series “The Good Fight” on Paramount+ as well as “Evil” (CBS) and “Smash” (NBC), and we discuss what working on those shows was like, and how it differs from writing for the stage. Let's hear the title track from the album, then jump into the interview with acclaimed writer for television and stage, Eric Holmes.

From playing iconic people to trying different artistic endeavors, Chilina Kennedy is just getting started. Growing up in different parts of the world, she discusses her early experiences and influences that ultimately led her to grace the Broadway stage. From portraying iconic people like Carole King to releasing her own album called “What You Find in a Bottle”, she talks about how she splits her focus between joining other people's works and creating her own, and why she finds it way harder to play a real person on stage. She also gets real when asked if she ever gets tired of playing the same role over and over, and why she loves it when people don't recognize her from the previous roles she played. Putting your work out there can be nerve-wracking, but for Chilina, it's the point of being creative: to be confident and bold and not be afraid to make mistakes. She explains why auditions are a bit like dating, the complexities of casting, and how perseverance can create luck! According to Alex, a multi-hyphenate is someone who sees the world and wants to offer their own prism. All her friends think she's crazy -- with her crystals adorning her dressing room at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on Broadway. But Alex brings up The Saturn Return, which is a personal change that happens in a human's life around every 30 years. Connecting it to the theatre, she looks at it like the three acts of a person's life. Alex was fortunate when she graduated from The Boston Conservatory in 2011. She was asked by a professor what her dream was -- and she responded with “paying bills as an actor.” But Alex realized after graduation, when she booked the national tour of The Addams Family, that she could not make her living touring on the road. She began to set new goals and boundaries on herself, but still risking burn out and approval from the rooms she was auditioning in. “Around the Saturn Return time, I started to realize how much of that creative power I was giving away to other people,” Matteo says. If you're an artist, we check how the industry is perceived in the media and how it negatively and positively affects the expectations of young artists. This episode is chock full of inspirational information for starting a new project, establishing new goals and boundaries, self worth and productivity, being a Slave to the Muse, and unpacking the moments where we say, “There has to be more.” “Your profession can't be your everything,” continues Matteo. “You have to have other things that spark creativity within you. We are all creative beings and we all have this thread of creativity that runs within us, and I think that the people who are really successful, regardless of what you do, are people who have tapped into that creative energy and figured out how to work with it, as opposed to fight it.” Alex Matteo - Broadway: Mrs. Doubtfire, A Bronx Tale, Annie (u/s Lily, Grace, Star to be) National Tours: Dirty Dancing (u/s Baby, Lisa, Elizabeth), Anything Goes, Addams Family (u/s Wednesday) Select Regional: 5th Avenue (doubtfire), Walnut Street/Riverside (Stephanie Mangano - Saturday Night Fever), MSMT (Stephanie Mangano - Saturday Night Fever), Goodspeed (A Sign of the Times), DTC (A Sign of the Times, u/s for Chilina Kennedy). Alex is a Broadway actor/woo woo enthusiast walking that fine line between surviving and thriving all while trying to give her dog Millie the life she deserves. After nearly a decade on Broadway Alex realized, true creativity stems from seeing the world that's handed to us and offering back something more beautiful. Whether on stage, in the kitchen or at home, Alex is fueled by the belief that our unique creative lens is what brings people together. She is an avid supporter of crop tops, and it is said she can assemble the most impressive charcuterie board this side of the Mississippi. She is also the creator and host of the Pull It Together Podcast. Pull It Together pulls back the curtain on life as a creative. Each week Broadway actor, Alex Matteo sits down with multi-passionate creatives who are breaking the mold debunking myths of creativity. When we say that Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett from The US Virgin Islands has a surprising sleep routine, we don't mean that she does anything strange or unusual. It's simply that like so many of us, sleep is something that shows up for Rep. Plaskett when she's run out of things to do. And like our friend Chilina Kennedy from a couple of episodes ago, she's stumbled upon a sleep solution that, according to Dr. Michael Grandner from the University of Arizona, has at least a loose basis in science. Of course, if the name doesn't immediately register, quickly Googling Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett should immediately reveal why we were excited to get her on the show: She had a colossally big day. One that made history. And though it would be easy to dismiss as a "third rail" subject that we shouldn't address on a sleep podcast, she's exactly the kind of person we should be talking to, because the question arises, "How did you possibly manage to fall asleep the night before?" We talk not only about the Congresswoman's ongoing sleep issues, but also things like the study from Dr. Dayna Johnson at Emory University, linking race with sleep in a way that is stark and disturbing. We also get into school start times in The US Virgin Islands, and how our Congressional Representatives go about affecting change when the science is undeniable. However, the Congresswoman has a "mic drop" moment at the end of her interview with Neil, where she makes a veiled reference to sex being good for sleep. We pursue that as a subject of conversation, almost to the point of being uncomfortable, with Dr. Grandner. And you'll be surprised what that conversation reveals about the data concerning sex and sleep. Linkapalooza Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett and her official Congressional web page.
Andy and Howie present you the first part of a three part discussion with the talented ladies of Broadway, Krystal Joy Brown, Jenn Colella, Ann Harada and Chilina Kennedy
Andy and Howie present a forum for the fabulously talented Broadway actresses: Krystal Joy Brown, Jenn Colella, Ann Harada and Chilina Kennedy. We call it, Broadway Ladies Discuss!
Actress Chilina Kennedy had a night that most of us can only imagine: Portraying one of her heroes, on Broadway, while that hero sat in the audience watching. As the star of Beautiful: The Carole King Story, Chilina did hundreds of shows as the legendary singer/songwriter. However, our guess is that if you look up the word "pressure", there's probably a picture of Chilina the night before. (Turns out we'd be wrong, according to Chilina.) How do you fall asleep in a situation like that, when you have such a massive day ahead of you? We start exploring that question with people from all walks of life, both famous folks and the everyday people you're probably in line with to get your coffee. For her part, Chilina swears by a calm, comfortable environment when she's trying to sleep - she adds relaxation exercises and body scan processes not only for herself, but for her young son as well. But what does the science say? Enter Dr. Michael Grandner from the University of Arizona, who talks about the difference between relaxation and sleep, and looks at the science behind the routine Chilina has been using for years. In addition, we talk to Michael about something called "sleep friendly ice cream", and Neil's #Beditorial looks at media articles and segments that don't give sleep the attention and seriousness it deserves, by highlighting products with ill-informed claims that offer false hope, and by shunning science in pursuit of click-baity headlines. Plus, we preview next week's show, and give you a peek at the special guest who joins us for the April 19th episode, as we continue talking to people who had to fall asleep the night before a massive day. Linkapalooza Get the latest on Chilina Kennedy and what she's working on (including an exciting new musical) here. Welcome back to another week of Stage Door Medium! This week, I’m joined by the incomparable Chilina Kennedy. Chilina made her Broadway debut in the Stratford Festival transfer production of Jesus Christ Superstar, and from there was handpicked by Carole King to succeed Jessie Mueller in Beautiful, The Carole King Musical. Most recently, Chilina originated the role of Dina on the national tour of The Band’s Visit. This week, we discuss sensing vibrations (For Chilina, it started in the womb as she’d rock out to her mom playing guitar while pregnant), as well as why meditation can happen anywhere and shouldn’t be as formalized as people think it is. Chilina also shares a profound piece of advice from her mother on the benefits of staying open to different types of faith and religious practices. Chilina and I also discuss the topic of psychometry (the ability to read energy from objects) and her amazing story about identifying the piano of her late piano teacher in a theatre years after having played it! Psychometry is also one of the reasons why I’d never try to do a reading inside an antique store. Too much energy! As usual, we discuss Chilina’s reading, why it’s important to go into a reading open to the agenda of Spirit versus ours, and how we will always receive the messages we need to hear.To close, Chilina tells us all about the Eclipse Theatre Company she founded in Toronto, their genius production of The Kiss of the Spiderwoman, and why immersive story-telling is a reminder that theatre will never die. In an Israeli desert town where every day feels the same, something different is suddenly in the air. Dina, the local café owner, had long resigned her desires for romance to daydreaming about exotic films and music from her youth. Under the spell of the night sky, their lives intertwine in unexpected ways, and this once sleepy town begins to wake up.
