I might think of this as the first piece of my National Poetry Month observance this year, or as a piece the follows on from my Alice Dunbar Nelson "I Sit and Sew" performance earlier in March. "She Dreams of Sewing Machines" is part of my set of Memory Car sonnets dealing with a daughter's experience of her mother's dementia. The Parlando Project combines various words (mostly literary poetry) with original music in differing styles. We've done over 800 of these, and we will be adding several more as part of our April #NPM2025 participation. You can hear any of our previous audio pieces and read about experience performing them at our blog and archives, located at frankhudson.org
In this episode, I sit down with my friend, author, and speaker Tiffany Bluhm. Tiffany is a powerful voice on the intersection of women's liberation, spiritual formation, justice, and leadership. She's also the Executive Director of a foundation development organization in the Pacific Northwest, a wife, and mom to two sons. Tiffany shares her incredible journey of being adopted as a young child from India, growing up in a predominantly white community, and finding freedom and belonging in the Gospel. Her story is a testament to God's redeeming love and how He meets us in every corner of our lives. We also dive into her newest book, The Women We've Been Waiting For, where Tiffany highlights women throughout history—biblical and modern—who have modeled resilience, leadership, and faith. From the courage of Queen Esther to the boldness of the women in St. Augustine, California, Tiffany challenges us to recognize how our ordinary actions can lead to extraordinary impact. Listen in as Tiffany shares: -How she found confidence and healing in the kindness and goodness of God -The lessons we can learn from women in scripture and history who thrived amidst chaos and challenge. -Practical encouragement for embracing your unique story as a purpose. Whether you're a woman seeking liberation, a leader navigating chaotic times, or someone longing to see the beauty of God's work in your life, this conversation will leave you inspired to live with courage and intention. Today, we're diving into the powerful intersection of justice, faith, and women's issues with Tiffany Bluhm. As the new director of Made for PAX and the author of the devotional "The Women We've Been Waiting For," Tiffany has dedicated her life's work to empowering marginalized voices and reimagining what flourishing looks like for women. In our conversation, Tiffany unpacks the vital role of self-care, contemplation, and holy imagination in the lives of women - especially those facing injustice. She shares how practices like breath prayers, centering prayer, and cultivating a "magnificent refuge" can provide the resilience and inner strength needed to enact communal renewal. Tiffany also explores the importance of women's stories and perspectives, and how men can benefit from engaging with diverse voices. We discuss the power of art, beauty, and creativity to nourish the soul and spark new visions of what's possible. Ultimately, Tiffany's message is one of hope - that when women are empowered to tend to their own wholeness, it leads to the flourishing of entire communities. So join me as we learn from Tiffany's wisdom and imagine a more equitable world where women's full humanity is honored. Have you ever found yourself in a place where you felt convicted to stand up for someone being oppressed? Or maybe you've felt a strong desire to be an advocate for them but you couldn't seem to find your voice? On this “best of” God Hears Her episode, we revisit a conversation we had with Tiffany Bluhm as she explores the path of finding our voice when we find ourselves in a place of injustice. She'll also share her own journey of how she found her place in Jesus, justice, and women. About Our Guest: Tiffany Bluhm is the author of She Dreams and Never Alone and their companion Bible studies, as well as her latest book, Prey Tell. She is cohost of the Why Tho podcast and leads an engaged audience of followers online. Tiffany is committed to encouraging people of faith to live with conviction, substance, and grace. As a minority, immigrant woman with an interracial family, Bluhm is passionate about inviting all to the table of faith, equality, justice, and dignity. Notes and Quotes: “I always felt welcome in the kingdom. I always felt like I had found my place.” “As my faith grew and as my grip on justice tightened, there was this intersection and I found my place. It's Jesus and it's justice and it's women.” “In my work, I critique how we have messaged Jesus, how we have weaponized Scripture against women. Because the honest truth is the imbalance of power we see in our world is one of the leading factors to derail a woman's faith, career, financial standing, and her reputation.” “It came to understanding that loyalty to conviction had to override my loyalty to an institution.” “If you see something that is inherently wrong, and you stay silent, you become complicit in that action.” “Think of the opportunity, especially among women, to lock arms and to serve and listen and to lament with one another. And to bring change.” “Change in gender inequality has only come when women have locked arms together.” “How did we, from the first century to this modern day, twist Jesus' words and weaponize Scripture to make women feel small? And how can we right that cultural wrong through a biblical lens?” “This idea of ‘don't touch the Lord's anointed' has been taken out of context to mean that ‘those who are anointed or appointed are immune from dissent.'” “If Jesus held up one woman's testimony, so must we.” “Fear is a flashing red light of a lack of love.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show: God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon. https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order God Loves Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women: godlovesher.org Order Tiffany's book Prey Tell: https://www.amazon.com/Prey-Tell-Silence-Women-Everyone/dp/1587434784/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=prey+tell&qid=1620925274&sr=8-1 Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy Tiffany's Instagram: tiffanybluhm

Still A Part of Us: A podcast about stillbirth and infant loss
Dad Jeff tells, from his perspective, about his wife's 2nd pregnancy and the birth story of their son, Jeff Jr., who was diagnosed with bilateral renal agenesis, the absence of both kidneys at birth, at the 20-week ultrasound. The doctors told Bre and Jeff that Little Jeff would not live if she delivered him early or later. They decided to carry him as long as possible, and after he was born, Jeff Jr. lived for 6 hours and was able to spend time with his mom Bre, dad Jeff, and sister Murphy. Jeff Jr. died in his dad's arms in January 2019. Subscribe to the podcast and share it with a friend! Find us at www.stillapartofus.com. Newbie and seasoned backpackers alike all hold fears around backcountry travel. Outdoor Backpacking Educator and Empowerment Coach Allison Boyle shares how to overcome them this week on the Out and Back podcast. Allison is the face behind the ultra-popular blog and coaching service She Dreams of Alpine, which teaches women how to become safe, confident, and self-sufficient in the backcountry. In this fun and informative conversation, Allison tells hosts Mary and Abby how a city girl from Houston, Texas ended up becoming a backpacking expert. It certainly didn't happen overnight, and even involved a divorce. Allison shares her stumbling blocks when she started adventuring outside, and how her fears initially continued to grow as she gained more experience. She talks about the top three fears beginner backpackers face, and how to overcome them.“We're scared of what we don't know,” Allison says on Out and Back. “Things we do in our everyday life, like drive or walk down a busy city street, are more dangerous than anything we would do in the outdoors. It's just, they're more familiar to us and we're able to step into those scenarios more. And if you're a new backpacker, you can't imagine yourself in the outdoors at all. Once you start building those experiences for yourself, those fears start to go away.”Alison explains “trip resistance,” that dark cloud of anxiety that seems to float over your head the week before any trip — no matter your experience level. Learn how to quiet that inner voice telling you to abandon your plans, so you can get out and have a blast on the trail. Tune in to learn Allison's favorite breakfast foods in the backcountry, the one item she can't leave behind, and how she turned her outdoor passion into a career. I always felt like I had found my place.” “As my faith grew and as my grip on justice tightened, there was this intersection and I found my place. It's Jesus and it's justice and it's women.” “In my work I critique how we have messaged Jesus, how we have weaponized Scripture against women. And how can we right that cultural wrong through a biblical lens?” “This idea of ‘don't touch the Lord's anointed' has been taken out of context to mean that ‘those who are anointed or appointed are immune from dissent.'” “If Jesus held up one woman's testimony, so must we.” “Fear is a flashing red light of a lack of love.” Links/Books/Resources Mentioned in Show: Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon. https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Order Tiffany's book Prey Tell: https://www.amazon.com/Prey-Tell-Silence-Women-Everyone/dp/1587434784/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=prey+tell&qid=1620925274&sr=8-1 Tiffany's Instagram: tiffanybluhm Elisa's Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn's Instagram: eryneddy

For both survivors and bystanders alike, why is it important to tell the truth about the power imbalances we see? From Genesis 1 to Jesus’s time to purity culture, fraternities, and present day businesses, churches, and politics, guest Tiffany Bluhm guides us through the history of the oppression of women. Today, it shows up in every sector of society, both sacred and secular. So how can we join in the work of speaking up, fighting for justice, and advocating for those who can’t speak up themselves? In this episode we discuss: Shame and power imbalances Why it's so difficult for trauma survivors to speak up The subtle psychology of believing certain narratives over others Jesus’s example of advocating for the abused and oppressed What bystander invention means & how to act on behalf of those who are hurting (“I will lend you my strength”) Dignifying the experience of those who’ve been abused (lament that this happens in all realms; listen well; learn) Love is not divorced from justice, and how justice is the heart of the Lord Connect with Tiffany Bluhm on Instagram @tiffanybluhm, her website tiffanybluhm.com, and pre-order Prey Tell on her site for access to the Prey Tell Summit. Friendly warning: We will be talking about delicate topics today so if you have little ears around you, maybe pop in those headphones or give it a listen when you have some alone time! I have the honor of talking with Tiffany Bluhm this week (her second time on the podcast— listen to our conversation about consent here) and we are doing a deep dive into some real talk this week. We’re discussing what we’ve been taught about our roles as women, both in culture AND in the church. Specifically, Ephesians 5 and how it has been taken out of context and weaponized to silence women. What happens when women hold power? “When women are in power, everyone wins— not just women.” “The patriarchy has no roots in the gospel… not one. But we’ve weaponized both the old and new testament to convince us otherwise.” Tiffany and I both share our experiences and what we’ve been taught by the church about our roles as women. The chasm between the God of the bible and the church narratives Moments when women are empowered in the Bible Solomon’s wife in the Song of Songs Queen Esther in the Old Testament Ruth proposing to Boaz Proverbs 31 Lydia in the New Testament Unfortunately, there are also moments of the patriarchy at its peak Tamar or Hagar in the Old Testament The sexualization of women “The most neglected person in America is the black woman.” - Malcolm X Women are sexualized from an alarmingly young age. “Only girls’ fashions urge body consciousness at the very youngest ages. . . . Preschoolers worship Disney princesses, characters whose eyes are larger than their waists. No one is trying to convince eleven-year-old boys to wear itty-bitty booty shorts or bare their bellies in the middle of winter. . . . The pressure on young women to reduce their worth to their bodies and to see those bodies as a collection of parts that exist for others’ pleasure” and “to continuously monitor their appearance” - Peggy Orenstein, Girls and Sex Most girls will be sexually harassed by the time they are in middle school. Ephesians 5:21-5:33 This scripture passage has been weaponized to oppress women. “It’s dangerous to take things out of context.” Women were treated as property in that time— Paul was quoting the cultural expectations for that time. It’s important to note that it also mentions that men should lay down their lives for her. To love her. That was radical. When we contextualize it, Ephesians 5 is an invitation for mutual love and support. “Look what can happen when women and men work together, when you really see each other as equals. Look at the world you can create together… What if we could flourish together?” Resources Keep up with Tiffany at TiffanyBluhm.com and on IG at @tiffanybluhm. Move aside, poets! (But just for one second!) Here near the end of our Shakespeare’s Shorts season, we finally caught hold of another fiction aficionado! Alexis Kienlen’s first novel, Mad Cow, came out this April from Now Or Never Publishing, but she’s also a two-time published poet. (We told you, poets: just hold on for one second.) In this episode we discuss about how Alexis did research for her book by simply doing her job as an agricultural reporter, and we meditate on the theme of the urban outsider in a rural setting. Along the way, Kate and Phuc finally learn where Canada is, and we hear mention of some steamy cowboy romances. Saddle up partner, because this episode is a wild, wonderful ride. Order a copy of Mad Cow from Bookshop.org, and while you’re at it, you can pick up Alexis’s poetry publications, 13 and She Dreams in Red, through your local indie. Finally, be sure to follow Alexis on Twitter to stay up to date on all the latest bovine (and writing) news!

Know that if you have experiences trauma, you are not alone! Tiffany Bluhm is the author of She Dreams and Never Alone; she also hosts the podcast “Why Tho” with Ashley Abercrombie (who was also on the podcast— check out her episode here.) There has historically been an abuse of power when it comes to consent. 4 Questions to Ask Yourself in an Uncomfortable Situation Is this okay? How can I be an active participant in this situation?
Tiffany Bluhm is a beautiful writer and speaker with an incredible story that just breathes life into everyone who encounters it – so I am humbled and excited to be able to share it with all of you today. Tiffany was born in India, abandoned as a newborn in New Delhi. She was one of more than 25 million Indian children who were orphaned in the ‘80s. And for most of her life, this origin was a thorn in her side; she saw a world where everyone had baby pictures and memories passed down by family, but she had no evidence of her beginning except for a number and a name given to her by an orphanage. So, at her core, she struggled with her sense of identity. Tiffany was lucky enough, however, to be adopted, and to be given the opportunity to talk about how difficult it was. “So many adoptees go underground with their feelings. It's called invisible trauma, when you can't make sense of the trauma that's happened because you don't have conscious memories of it, but you can feel it and you're still dealing with the effects of it.” But Tiffany knew that if she was here, there must be a reason – and she had to make the best of it. Although we don't always come from such humbling pasts, most of us feel like this at some point in our lives: lost, confused, and a little unsure why we're here. And when we feel that way, we often end up letting the things that we do to define who we are. However, that's now how you live a fulfilling life that lights you up. Who you are should define what you do, how you work, what your goals are, and what your values are. When you can align all of that, you can really achieve the life that you were created for. “I am not leftovers,” Tiffany says confidently. “This isn't going to be the breaking of me, but could potentially be the making of me.” You can get more inspiration and wisdom from Tiffany in her upcoming book, She Dreams, or her own incredible podcast, Why Tho?. Dreams are no joke. They keep us up at night and the more we pursue them, the more we have a hankerin' for them to come true. The truth is, too many of us feel like our past choices or lack of access to resources or gender, or (fill in the blank) is reason enough to give up on our dreams altogether. Here's the thing, dreaming is your birthright and you owe to yourself and the world to get after it. Go on, girl. Get yours. This episode is especially fabulous since Tiffany reads the first chapter of her new book, She Dreams. Yep, that's right. For freezy. No dolla spent and you get a free chapter. You'll love it. Who else is obsessed with the Enneagram, DISC profile, Buzzfeed Disney Princess Quiz, and whatever else tells us who we are, and what we're good at? Okay, great, well, this podcast is the opposite of that. Cause your weaknesses might be killing you tho. You're welcome. What we don't want is for you to waste time improving your weaknesses, but what we do want is for you to understand how your blindspots could be impacting your leadership and capacity. We all have character flaws and things we're not great at, and that's why we need each other to thrive, so we cover each other, and experience freedom in our strengths and weaknesses. Shame has no power in a healthy community, and that's what we want for you. This episode was inspired by Tiffany's new book, She Dreams. You can find it everywhere books are sold on Feb. 5th, 2019, but don't wait until then. Pre-order like the cool kids at http://shedreamsbook.com. “For young women and girls, overwhelmingly, the silence results in funneling them further into a system of violence. So they go from personal and interpersonal violence to structural and systemic violence, ultimately leading them to incarceration.” In this interview, Liz shares her thoughts on sexual violence both from the perspective of her professional work advocating for at-risk girls, as well from a more personal lens, as the daughter of an incest survivor. The mission of her consulting group, She Dreams of Freedom, is to improve the outcomes of young women and girls in the criminal and juvenile justice system. In this interview she talks about the importance of seeing these girls, what you can do to help and how in the act of “helping” we often find our own healing. --------------------------------------------------- SUBSCRIBE to the show to be the first to hear about new episodes!
