299 Ted Bright - Slinging It

Deer Hunt by Big Buck Registry

This weeks show is an interview with Ted Bright. Ted is as you might expect a diehard deer hunter who likes prefers the a mobile hunt over a fixed stand. Ted uses a sling or harness to maneuver from tree to tree based on when and where he's finding active big buck sign. Ted is also an archer and seems to prefer this over anything. Something has "clicked" for Ted and says that he just seems to be in tune with finding hunting opportunity and capitalizing on those more than he's ever done before. We go over Ted's approach, hunts from previous years, shooting from muscle memory, and the techniques that he uses to identify a good spot to hunt and how to gain landowner permission. Welcome to the Big Buck Registry's Best Deer Hunting stories of 2019.  On almost every show we ask each guest to share a memorable deer story that's meaningful to them.  At the heart of the Big Buck Registry are the stories of the men and women across the world, from all walks of life, that share a common bond in hunting.  We've always felt that the story was just as important as the rest of the show because it brings everything together.  If the rest of the show is the text book, the story is the example. Marc Warnke says that it's not so much the hunting strategy, but it's the spot. That means hunting where hunters don't typically hunt, sometimes hunting spots that haven't been hunted in over 20 years and hunting where wheels can't go.  This also means sleeping on bulls or bucks, which means that you're not coming out each day. And that also means hauling in food and gear that one or two hunters couldn't possibly manage.  So how?  Well, Marc turned to pack goats to get to these remote areas with all the gear needed to hunt great spots for days on end.  The rewards are priceless. Although Harmon Carson is known as the Bayou Bowhunter, he sharpened his  bowhunting skills in the in the mountains of Colorado.  Harmon credits his dad for lots of his skills, but not necessarily in the traditional father/son teaching sense.  In many cases, Harmon learned to hunt because his father would escort him into the woods, but from then on he was on his own to learn the rest - methods that might not fly today. Nonetheless, those lessons made Harmon one heck of a good bowhunter - no more gun, no more compound, just straight up traditional bowhunting. And what goes great with meat?  Spices!  So the brothers ventured into the spice business which grew it's now infamous label from their bearded father and namesake inspired by membership at a local beard club.  Their spices are all natural, free of sugar, MSG, and anti-caking materials and the brothers' deer processing YouTube videos about how to correctly process and age venison has gone absolutely viral.  In this show, we explore all the Bearded Butcher secrets to successful deer processing, how jerky can break down deer hunting barriers, and how you can do it too.   SPECIAL OFFER FROM QUIETKAT TO OUR LISTENERS-  USE CODE: BIGBUCK15 to Receive 15% Off Your Order OUR SPONSORS:  Rackology, Covert Scouting Cameras, QUIETKAT,  BIG BUCK MERCH   Here's What We Discuss: Massive Bucks, No Time to Hunt Muscle Structures Field Dressing and Temp Spreading Bacteria Not Splitting the Bone Care After Removing the Hide Coolers and Ice are My Friends Building a Walk In Cooler on Short Money Dry Aging the Carcus Most Popular Guy on a Warm Day The Hock and the Tendon The Knives Dry Aging on the Bone 10 Days 32 to 40 Degrees Plus Humidity Enzymes and Optimal Range The Processing Video Fish Tenders Removing the Glands The Clean Up Prepared for the Freezer Spice Blend Biz The Beard Club Venison Brats and Jerky Adam Greetree and Laura Zerra Catch and Cooks Jerky to Promote Hunting Memorable Deer Hunts Whitefeather Meats and the Bearded Butcher OTown Outdoors and YouTube Our APP: CLICK HERE for Our FAN APP Help Support This Show: Click Here to Support Us Big Buck Merch: Click Here for BBR Deer Hunt Merch FEEDBACK HOTLINE: 724-613-2825 PLACES TO FIND OUR PODCAST: Click for Apple Podcasts Click Here for Stitcher Click Here for Google Play Click Here for Our Podcast Page Click Here for YouTube Subscribe to our RSS Feed Click Here for TuneIn Click Here for Google Podcasts Click Here for Spotify Click Here for Radio Public Click Here for Radio.com Click Here for iHeart Radio Want to Know When the Next Big Buck Podcast is Released? The arborists are probably the first to harness the power of the tree harness, but what about the rock climbing community? According to Greg Godfrey from the tree harness company Tethrd, we need to give credit to each. And that's pretty much how his company got its roots - it's a deer hunter meets arborist meets rock climber kind of story. Greg says that due to the demand to pack lighter to get to your favorite deer hunting spot without sacrificing safety or the ability to hunt from a tree, Tethrd was born. Tethrd isn't the first tree harness company, but they are perhaps the first to focus on this method of hunting that's been around for quite a while and really make some innovative advancements. We discuss with Greg the products that Tethrd offers, how to use them effectively, and how their system can safely make you a lighter more mobile deer hunter. Well, turns out, with a little ingenuity from some outdoor enthusiasts and a re-design of the legendary mountain bike - fatter tires, better suspension, a motor, and a hardcore battery like what you'd find in the futuristic Tesla automobile, the all terrain electric bike was born.  We discuss in detail with QuietKat's Adam Parr how they engineered what is perhaps the most innovated electric all terrain bicycle on the market and how it will likely change the future of how hunters go quietly to and from their favorite hunting spots with the efficiency of the ATV. Remember when maps were on paper?  We use to spend money on paper topo maps and put a thumbtack on that map to represent a deer sighting, effectively creating heat map with multiple thumbtacks.  Then along came Google and Google Maps.  It was a revolutionary step forward in scouting technology, but there were some very important pieces missing from the Google map.  For one, we couldn't instantly in-the field in real-time tell where the boundary lines of property existed. Sure, we could spend hours looking at town survey maps, but nothing was instant.  And who the heck owned the property?  That was another game of tracking down slow information points.  These were all the challenges that Eric Siegfried, founder of OnX Maps had at one time.  All of the information was available, but not instantly on any single device in an organized manner when you needed it.  So, Eric set out to fix all that with his new company.  A decade later, with a subscription and smart phone or GPS you can instantly have access to all this information.  It's a game changer for the hunter.  You'll learn more about the areas that you hunt than you ever thought to ask and it makes the hunting possibilities endless.  We dive deep into all the bells, whistles, and capabilities that OnX has to offer with Zach Sandau, Project Co-Ordinator for OnX Hunt. By now in your hunting career you've probably used a game camera or two. As hunters we use game cameras to scout and gather information about deer movement.  Game camera pics can be deceiving though, for multiple reasons. For example, there could be a huntable buck in the area that just won't come to the camera.  Or, perhaps we get a picture of a buck, but the reason we think he's in the area might be relative to something completely different from what we thought.  Scientifically these examples could be considered a false negatives and a false positives.  Using a multiple camera system and gathering data points connected to weather  might be a better approach to determining when to hunt.  However, keeping track of data when using more than a couple cameras can be daunting and without keeping statistics correctly the degree of error goes up when determining the true pattern.  That's where Deer Lab comes into play.  Deer Lab takes game camera picture information thru photo recognition and time stamps and marries that content with external weather data to help you determine statistically the best time to hunt a target.  In other words, Deer Lab can efficiently determine what's in the picture and then couples the time stamp to  weather points like wind speed, sunrise, sunset, barometric pressure, visibility, humidity, and moon data.  In this episode of Hunt Tech Part III, we dive deep with Jon Livingston of Deer Lab to figure out how Deer Lab can help you uncover all the data and information that a game cam picture holds, well beyond just an image of your target buck. On the last episode of Deer Hunt, we began our exploration of hunting technology with the Drury's new app called DeerCast.  We continue our series on hunting technology this time with the likes of Tactacam, a company who built what is perhaps the best deer hunting action camera on the market.  We've all been involved with hunts where we wished we had a camera to film it all but didn't.  And there's that occasion when we did have a camera, but the awkwardness of using the camera and taking the shot at the same time made for terrible footage.  There have been other action cameras on the market, but somehow, this small coming out of Minnesota has gotten top marks with hunters, probably because they thought through what the hunter needs most- a camera that can seemingly just  be part of the equipment -  conveniently hidden near the end of a barrel or within the stabilizer of a bow, and without duct tape, and can be activated with a push of the button.  Tactacam continues to reach new ground as it constantly attempts to increase the quality of the video with the likes of  Tactacam 5.0, but has never compromised for those hunters on a budget for example with the Tactacam Solo.  Stay with us as we explore all the aspects of Tactacam on this show with the like of Aaron Stonehocker. In 1977 Chris Cordell began a career as a professional deer hunter.  He is the first and only hunter in the world to complete a double slam in one season and has tagged in over 200 whitetails, not to mention  placing over 30 Pope and Young whitetails on his wall.  Oh, and that was before the age of 35. Chris is also an outdoor writer, product designer, and inventor of various archery products for the hunting industry.  Away from the spotlight for a while, Chris is poised for a comeback and wants nothing more than to help hunters hunt better. That's where Dennis Pridgen weighed in 3.5 years ago.  Today, 160 pounds lighter, weighing in at a lean 200 pounds, Dennis has found a rejuvenation for everything he loves, life and deer hunting.  Dennis attributes his successful weight loss to a popular diet called the ketogenic diet.  A passionate deer hunting and outdoor television cameraman, Dennis now out paces his fellow hunters and looks at climbing trees these days as entertaining instead of a burden.   Dennis walks us through how he dropped the 160 pounds in a relatively short amount of time and how the weight loss has drastically help his career and his ability to hunt. Welcome to Expect Success at georgebalek.com. Lately there has been a lot of talk amongst some of my friends and business associates regarding the law of averages.
