Welcome to the twenty-first episode of Best Issue Ever! Today's guest is Karen Charm, who will be well-known to many X-fans for their great X-Men fan art, prints, and zines. They also do a good amount of pro work for publishers like Scholastic, so follow them pretty much across social media @charmgardens. Okay, you love them and I love them so we're back to the X-Men, baby! We're talking about Generation Next #4, right near the end of the Age of Apocalypse crossover THIRTY YEARS AGO. Time, what even is it. This issue is written by *mumbles* Scott Lobdell, drawn by Chris Bachalo and Mark Buckingham, colored by Steve Buccellato and Electric Crayon, and lettered by good ole Richard Starkings and Comicraft. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi or Patreon @ ko-fi.com/saracenturypodcasts. or patreon.com/saracenturypodcasts. All hail the King of Fonts! That's right, Richard Starkings is in the hot seat today, answering all of our questions about lettering, font design, Marvel UK, Comicraft, Doctor Who, and his Elephantmen universe. Richard got into comics in his native UK, where he started lettering for 2000 AD, Warrior, and various Marvel UK titles. After moving stateside, he founded Comicraft, a lettering and design company that works with all the major publishers. His original creation, Hip Flask, was born out of an advertisement for Comicraft and soon had its own series of one-shot specials. Then came the ongoing prequel series Elephantmen, which continues to this day.  You can find the writer, editor, and letterer on Twitter and Instagram @RichStarkings._____________________Dollar Bin Bandits is the official podcast of TwoMorrows Publishing. Cale's high school best friend, Jake, joins us to discuss "Daredevil: Yellow" by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. This 2002 graphic novel takes us back to Daredevil's origin and a time when he wore a yellow costume instead of the red tights we are familiar with. Tim Sale's retro, expressionistic art perfectly compliments Jeph Loeb's wistful script and they are joined by Richard Starkings on letters and Matt Hollingsworth on colours. Ol' Horn Head is a favourite character of Matt, Cale and Jake, and we all share what makes Matt Murdock so special to each of us during our discussion. Next week we will have a special episode as Matt releases a creator commentary for the first chapter of his graphic novel, "You're Stuck With Me Now." Rogue and Remy finally shed their past sins, but is that enough to bring them closer together? We delve into the two Howard Mackie mini-series from the 1990s that defined the romance of the popular X-couple. It's a lot of comics to cover, but they are essential to the conversation if we're ever to join them in the next stage of their relationship. Gambit's past refuses to stay where it belongs, and Rogue refuses to let its murky shadow get in the way of the love she so desperately wants to partake in but is still struggling to accept herself. This is a hot and heavy melodrama, and we are here for it. Now, more than ever, we need the aid of Drs. Gottman and Abrams, and their relationship guide "Eight Dates: Essential Conversations for a Lifetime of Love." What are the keys to listening? Putting judgment aside is essential. Being open and honest with who you were and who you are is crucial.  The issues covered in this episode: "Gambit" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Lee Weeks, inked by Klaus Janson, colored by Steve Buccellato, and lettered by Richard Starkings. Also, "Rogue" Vol. 1 No. 1 - 4, written by Howard Mackie, penciled by Mike Wieringo, inked by Terry Austin and Jason Gorder, colored by Dana Moreshead, Mike Thomas, and Digital Chameleon, and lettered by Richard Starkings and Comicraft. Paul teams with the super talented and super articulate Xum Yukinori to look at the colossal crosscrossover comic mini-series event JLA/AVENGERS from 2003. This 4 issue epic brought together every single JLA thing with every single Avengers thing and was lovingly crafted by artist George Perez and writer Kurt Busiek, with Richard Starkings, Tom Smith and Dan Raspler. With the help of semi-OCD Kevin Wetter, Paul and Xum determine if this is actually the eventiest event to end all events that ever evented. We also talk the “graying” of the world of comics and how it's impacted the characters of this and other titles. We spend some time on our favorite characters, the notion of hope and it's reflected in certain titles. Matt Warren is up next, and with 40 years in the industry he has a lot to share. We talk about the advent of house music, how one made a career back in the era of vinyl and cassettes, and his upcoming tour for his debut album, “Music is My Life.” On this week's podcast, I feature the song “Star-Crossed,” by the band Excorde, made up of Jimena Arroyo, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Jonnie Cook, from Chicago. This is a great tune and I hope you enjoy it.

It is not until we are several pages into the book that we discover that he is also a talking, thinking chicken. He is no anomaly; decades earlier, all of chickenkind suddenly gained intelligence and speech; by the 2000s they are legally human. Jake’s father’s illness and subsequent death lead Jake to read his father’s account of the early days after the change; this in turn allows Alanguilan to show the reader the often horrific sequence of events that followed chickenkind’s sudden elevation to sapience.
