Robert Kane (born Robert Kahn October 24, 1915 – November 3, 1998) was an American comic book writer, animator and artist who co-created, with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Finger (Bill Finger), the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DC_Comics (DC Comics) character https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman (Batman). Kane was inducted into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_book (comic book) industry's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby_Hall_of_Fame (Jack Kirby Hall of Fame) in 1993 and into the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eisner_Award (Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame) in 1996. In early 1939, DC's success with the seminal superhero https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superman (Superman) in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_Comics (Action Comics) prompted editors to scramble for more such heroes. In response, Bob Kane conceived "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman (the Bat-Man)." Kane said his influences for the character included actor https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Fairbanks (Douglas Fairbanks)' film portrayal of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swashbuckler (swashbuckler) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorro (Zorro); https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonardo_da_Vinci (Leonardo da Vinci)'s diagram of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornithopter (ornithopter), a flying machine with huge bat-like wings; and the 1930 film https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bat_(1926_film)#Remakes (The Bat Whispers), based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Rinehart (Mary Rinehart)'s mystery novel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Circular_Staircase (The Circular Staircase) (1908). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Finger (Bill Finger) joined Bob Kane's nascent studio in 1938. An aspiring writer and part-time shoe salesperson, he had met Kane at a party, and Kane later offered him a job https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_writer (ghost writing) the strips Rusty and Clip Carson. He recalled that Kane ...had an idea for a character called 'Batman', and he'd like me to see the drawings. I went over to Kane's, and he had drawn a character who looked very much like Superman with kind of ... reddish tights, I believe, with boots ... no gloves, no gauntlets ... with a small https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domino_mask (domino mask), swinging on a rope. He had two stiff wings that were sticking out, looking like bat wings. And under it was a big sign ... BATMAN.Finger said he offered such suggestions as giving the character a cowl and scalloped cape instead of wings; adding gloves; leaving the mask's eyeholes blank to connote mystery; and removing the bright red sections of the original costume, suggesting instead a gray-and-black color scheme. Finger additionally said his suggestions were influenced by https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Falk (Lee Falk)'s https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom (The Phantom), a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Print_syndication (syndicated) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newspaper (newspaper) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comic_strip (comic strip) character with which Kane was familiar as well. Finger, who said he also devised the character's civilian name, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Wayne (Bruce Wayne), wrote the first Batman story, while Kane provided art. Kane, who had already submitted the proposal for Batman at DC and held a contract, is the only person given an official company credit for Batman's creation. Comics historian https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Goulart (Ron Goulart), in Comic Book Encyclopedia, refers to Batman as the "creation of artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger". According to Kane, "Bill Finger was a contributing force on Batman right from the beginning. He wrote most of the great stories and was influential in setting the style and genre other writers would

Superman is a 1978 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. An international co-production between the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Panama and the United States, it was supervised by Alexander and Ilya Salkind, produced by their partner Pierre Spengler and written by Mario Puzo from a story by Puzo, and is the first installment in the Superman Film Series. Today I finally rewatched the first time any DC Superhero was in the theater in a feature length movie (apparently 58 minutes counts) when I saw the kinda silly, kinda boring, "Superman and the Mole-Men" starring George Reeves for the first time as the Man of Steel.

Warner Bros cannot leave the character alone for a minute. There have been so many takes on Superman some more enjoyable than others and this one spins out of the “Arrowverse”. This though is something different because it shows a fully matured and developed Superman with a family. Honestly, this is refreshing because it adds something that really is missing from live action Superman ethos and that is how he is more human than the people he protects in many instances. He is performing next to impossible feats just a few minutes into the pilot episode yet from the soundtrack to his narration it is grounded emotionally. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/goingfullnerd/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goingfullnerd/support

We're back with another Character Corner episode. This time we're diving into the first part of a two part series on the man himself, Superman. Created in 1938 by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel, Superman is the first superhero and is the birth of the Golden Age. The first part of this series is going to focus more on the overall history and context of Superman and not really digging into the stories too much. Mainly because there’s so much. This is once again a Golden Age character and perhaps the most important character in comic book history. There have been some changes here and there but Superman has largely remained the same compared to other characters (go dive into the histories of Wonder Woman or Hawkman). Superman also had the benefit of radio serials (Over 2000 episodes) that were aimed at kids that really helped the character take root. From 1941 - 1970, under editor Mort Weisinger, Superman stories spend nearly 3 decades finding their footing. While there are definitely stories here that resonate, this time period is really about setting up the overall characterization of who Superman really is. And it's a good foundation that anyone looking to make a live action Superman should look at (Looking at you Zack Snyder). In this episode we explore the 'who is he?' of Superman leading up to Crisis and then jump into John Byrne's Man of Steel which sets the stage of who Post-Crisis Superman is and is the Superman that is the model for all those that come after. We then end with the Death of Superman (Superman #75) which Dpalm makes a solid argument for the beginning of the death of comics. Before we jump into that though, Kriss and Dpalm take some time to talk about the passing of Chadwick Boseman. Boseman's death hits so hard because he was becoming a legend not just because of the characters he played on screen but because of who he was off of it.  Issues: Key Issues Action Comics #1 - First appearance of Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane Superman #1 - First appearance Jonathan and Martha Kent  Action Comics #23 - First appearance of The Daily Star/Daily Planet   Superman #7  - First appearance of Perry White  Action Comics #6 (unnamed cameo), Radio serial (April 15 1940), Superman #13  - First appearance of Jimmy Olsen Superman #76 - First official meeting of Batman and Superman Key Villain Appearances Action Comics #23 - First appearance of Lex Luther Action Comics #242 - First appearance of Brainiac   Superboy #68  - First appearance of Bizarro Adventure comics #283 - First appearance General Zod  Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 - First appearance of Darkseid Powers Flight - Comes in the second episode of the radio serial Action Comics #11 - X-Ray vision & super hearinng Action Comics #20 - Super human breath Superman #129 - Freeze breath Superman #146 - All of his powers except strength come from the Earth's sun Action Comics #300 - All of his powers (even strength) come from the Earth's sun and are taken away by red sunlight Superman #61 - Kryptonite first appears in the comics (mentioned on radio 6 years before) Crisis on Infinite Earths DC's Legends 1 - 6 - John Ostrander John Byrne's Man of Steel 1 - 6 - retells the story origin of Superman Post Crisis Superman The Man of Steel (These volumes collect Superman, Action Comics and Adventures of Superman) Volume 2 Volume 3 Volume 4 Volume 5 Volume 6 Volume 7 Volume 8 Volume 9 The Death of Superman Superman The Man of Steel #18 Justice League of America #69 Superman #74 Adventures of Superman #497 Action Comics #684 Superman The Man of Steel #19 Superman #75 Like what you hear? Action Comics #1000 is out this Wednesday (at 12:01am). How many covers do you plan to buy? Are you ready for the Bendis era of Superman? Superman’s past 5 years have been kind of rocky… Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s Amazing Spider-Man looks like it’s going to be great. Their Free Comic Book Day issue is a lot of fun, as is Jason Aaron’s Avengers. Don’t miss these new series. Also, Oni’s Shadow Roads and Transformers Unicron. Catching up on new comic announcements, such as the new creative team and cast for Astonishing X-Men and Joëlle Jones’ Catwoman ongoing. This week’s Domino #1 is wonderful, fun, and a solid book about female friendships. Planning a hypothetical signing on a holiday. Hypothetical. The most adorable bat-symbol we’ve ever seen.

This week we swoon over our guest Lindsey Tyne Johnson as we talk about her and DC's relationship with Romance comics! Where did they come from? Who were they for? Are they still around? All these questions and more get answers on this week's issue! For more about Lindsey go to www.lindseytynejohnson.com Sponsored by Great Lakes Grooming Co. Intro by Aaron Barry   Prescribed Reading from Issue #44: Young Romance vol. 1 #1 – Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, this was the first ever romance comic book, and launched the entire genre. Heart Throbs vol. 1 #41 – One of the earliest DC romance comics to feature the Comics Code Authority seal on the cover. Young Love vol. 1 #113 – This giant-sized issue features the remarkably condescending “Mark…on the man’s side” advice column. Young Romance: A New 52 Valentine’s Day Special #1 – Released in 2013, this one-shot anthology features romance comic – style stories starring the heroes and love interests of the New 52 DC Universe. Superman’s Girl Friend, Lois Lane vol. 1 – Early stories in this Lois Lane solo series were centred on her romantic interest in Superman, often with her competing for his affections with Lana Lang. Young Romance vol. 1 #189 – The Doctor’s first-ever romance comic, featuring stories and a quiz to score how independent a woman you are.   SHOW NOTES (courtesy of Josh Gill)   Lindsey Johnson Four Brothers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Brothers_(film) Manga https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manga Spiderman http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Peter_Parker_(Earth-616) DC’s Young Romance http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Young_Romance_Vol_1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Romance This Isn’t Happiness (blog) http://thisisnthappiness.com/   Intro Young Love http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Young_Love_Vol_1 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Love_(comics) Jack Kirby https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Kirby Colin’s HW Spectre Vol 4 No 005 http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Spectre_Vol_4_5   Young Romance   What is your experience with romance comics? *Note* Excuse the audio issues this episode. I was partly sick when recording this and didn't check my settings.* %CODE_LEXLUTHOR% We’re back! While our Summers Brothers episode was technically the first Character Corner of 2018, we recorded it in 2017, so this Lex Luthor episode is the first real episode of 2018. And you all are in for a treat. This episode is slightly different from our other Character Corners. We still go through the history of Lex but we spend more time really discussing and breaking down the core of the character. Unlike other DC characters, the core of Lex Luthor has strangely been consistent throughout his depictions. Sure his early first appearance in Action Comics #23 really set up as the ridiculous comic book villain stereotype, but the interesting thing about Lex is how his depiction mirrors the “stereotyped” bad guy of the era he’s in.  He’s been a ridiculous caricature of a bad guy in the 40’s, evil real estate billionaire, overweight and shrewd corporate exec and even a billionaire evil President. Each version might have a reworked background but for a DC character, he’s oddly enough very consistent in how he’s portrayed.   The basis of Lex is always his absurd hatred of Superman followed by his true belief that if not for Superman, he himself would be a good guy/hero. There are some really great non-canon stories that show this (Lex Luthor: Man of Steel and All-Star Superman for example).    This is a great episode that you’re not gonna want to miss as we break down what makes Lex Luthor tick. Oh and Kriss makes it very clear, Lex doesn’t qualify for his “Villain Agenda”. Find out why. Key Issues (we cover a lot more than what’s listed here): Action Comics #43 - First Appearance Non-Canon  Lex Luthor: Man of Steel All-Star Superman (Grant Morrison) Issue #5 - Clark visits Lex in jail The Man of Steel (1986) - John Byrne redesigns the character Issue #4 - sets up a hostage situation on his own boat to try to hire Superman The Death of Superman: Superman vol1 #149 Superman vol 2 #2 - Is told Clark Kent is Superman, doesn’t believe it President Luthor President Luthor: Secret Files & Origins Our Worlds at War Superman - Batman (Jeph Loeb) Vol 1 - Public Enemies - Whole series is great, first 6 issues deal with the end of President Lex  Superman: Birthright (Mark Waid) Infinite Crisis Fifty-Two Issues 34 & 35 - Turns off the Everyman powers for citizens and makes it “rain bodies” on New Years  New Krypton saga Superman: New Krypton Superman: Last Stand of New Krypton Superman: War of the Supermen Superman: The Black Ring Forever Evil Rebirth

While our Summers Brothers episode was technically the first Character Corner of 2018, we recorded it in 2017, so this Lex Luthor episode is the first real episode of 2018. We still go through the history of Lex but we spend more time really discussing and breaking down the core of the character. Pourquoi ?

%CODE1% When Dpalm suggested we do Superboy for our next Character Corner, I was skeptical that we would be able to cover a whole show. Boy was I wrong. We ended up doing 90 minutes on Connor Kent and that's after condensing and skipping over a lot of things. This is only the beginning though since we clearly have to do a Teen Titans Character Corner now. Superboy is a really interesting DC character since its really easy to follow a linear progression for this character from his first appearance up to the New 52 (but as Dpalm says...don't read any New 52 Superboy...its bad). We also cover Superboy Prime because he's an important piece of Connor's story. Kent, as opposed to Superman, is traditionally presented as behaving in a more introverted or mild manner compared to his superheroic self. John Byrne's The Man of Steel revamp drops many traditional aspects of Clark Kent in favor of giving him a more aggressive and extroverted personality, including making Kent a top football player in high school and a successful author. Recent storylines restore elements of the earlier mild-mannered version of Kent. Clark Kent is a reporter at the Metropolis newspaper The Daily Planet, which allows him to keep track of events in which he might be able to help. Fellow reporter Lois Lane is often the object of Clark's affection; Lois's affection for Superman and rejection of Clark are a recurring theme in Superman comics, television, and movies. Unlike Batman, Superman considers himself Clark Kent first and Superman second. In an episode of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Superman says, "Superman is what I can do; Clark is who I am." Clark keeps his Superman identitity a secret to protect his loved ones. Various methods for keeping his Superman's identity secret over the years include his using "super-hypnosis", subliminally causing people to not make the connection, compressing his spine as Clark Kent to become shorter, and studying the Meisner acting technique to switch seamlessly between personas. Modern comic book stories show that to everyone, Superman is the greatest hero in the world and a larger-than-life figure, and no one thinks to look for him living as a normal human. Furthermore, since Superman goes into public unmasked, most people assume that he has no other identity. Even Batman commended him on his disguise. As long as he does not let on that he has another life, there is no real reason to look for a secret identity. When first confronted by evidence that Clark Kent is Superman, Lex Luthor dismisses it, saying, "No one with the power of Superman would be living as a normal man".
