This week on Wellbeing we talk with Dr. Dan Tomasulo about depression recovery though positive psychology. This is the fifth instalment in our series on depression. Dr Tomasulo is a counselling psychologist, writer, and professor. He holds a PhD in psychology and a Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. His most recent book Learned Hopefulness, The Power of Positivity To Overcome Depression was released in 2020. The book focuses on the idea of hope and positivity, and how those two concepts can play a part in recovery from depression. Dan's passion is Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology focuses on how our strengths and cultivating our best selves can lead to meaningful and fulfilling lives. In this episode, Dr Tomasulo talks about his book, what hope is, how hope can help one overcome depression, in a fast moving world how powerful time just stopping is, what is happening in the brain pathways when both depression and positivity are occurring and how they differ, how people of different ages interact with hope and positivity, and the use of positivity psychology in recovery programs. "Psychology has pretty much followed the medical model where we try to eliminate what's problematic in the hopes that that'll make you feel better, but really, not being depressed is not the same as being happy. If I take away all your depression, that doesn't guarantee you'll be happy. You've got to do you things that bring happiness to you." - Dr. Dan Tomasulo on this episode of Wellbeing Tune in next week when we talk Dr. Drew Ramsey about depression recovery through diet We would love to hear from you! Our guest this week is Dan Tomasulo. He is a counseling psychologist, psychodramatist, author, professor at Columbia University, and next month he will be a featured speaker at Workhuman® Live in Atlanta. If I'm going into business and I invent the pen that I've got to put on the market, and 80% of them break, I wouldn't be in business very long, you know? So, I think in the last 20 years, you've started to see a shift -- let's study the 20% that are doing well and figure out what they're doing. And that's what positive psychology is.""I want to do something that's bi-directional. I want to put out something good that something good happens out there. And that fills me back up and then I can put out more, you know, and if there's always a working through point, but if something isn't filling you up on a very regular basis, it's time for change.""Every stage of development is hallmarked by crisis and commitment. At first, the crisis happens, and then you become committed to a way of being. That crisis and commitment end up being the cornerstone of every developmental transition." Was ist eigentlich Zuversicht? I had a fascinating conversation with Dan Tomasulo, PhD about his newest book Learned Hopefulness, The Power of Positivity to Overcome Depression which came out on June 1st. Honored by Sharecare as one of the top ten online influencers on the issue of depression Dr. Dan is the incoming Academic Director and core faculty member at the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI), Teachers College, Columbia University, and holds a Ph.D. in psychology, MFA in writing, and Master of Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
The Covid-19 pandemic is affecting the way we live day to day life, work, even go to the grocery story. It has created unparalleled uncertainty about our own health, and the lives of those we love. Today, resilience expert Steve Leventhal talks with world renowned author, speaker and psychologist Dan Tomasulo (Learned Hopefulness, American Snake Pit) about what hope really is and how we can build it and use it to thrive in challenging times.
Mike Wood chats with Dan Tomasulo, who will be one of the presenters at WorkHuman Live 2020. Dan is a core faculty member at Teachers College Columbia University in the Spirituality Mind Body Institute (SMBI). He teaches Positive Psychology, as well as the Optimal Wellbeing program. Mike and Dan talk about positive psychology and the power of gratitude and hope. WorkHuman Live 2020Dan will share practical strategies for intentional self-care in his keynote at WorkHuman Live 2020. He says that deadlines and busy schedules make us forget to take care of ourselves. However, it’s intentional self-care that will boost our productivity. We need to recharge to work at our very best. The Power of GratitudeMike asks Dan what are some simple things we can do to take care of ourselves. Dan responds that one simple practice that has powerful effects, is to do a 90-second gratitude review of the day before, every morning. Gratitude is wired into many performance elements, into our sense of self, into our feelings of joy and connectedness and relationship. Doing a gratitude review has the power to change your perspective of the day past, even though we have a natural negativity bias. American Snake PitDan relates how he helped deinstitutionalize Willowbrook, the worst asylum in American history. His experimental group home, which he says was designed to fail, helped his patients thrive. What he found was that once people are given the right opportunity, they flourish. Mike agrees that people need purpose in their work. Productivity increases when workers feel a sense of positivity, connection and purpose. Positive PsychologyDan shares three key resources for listeners to learn more about positive psychology. The Power of HopeMike asks about Dan’s Ask a Therapist section at PsychCentral.com. Dan says that they receive about 2500 questions a month, and what he sees most often is that people are looking for a sense of hope. He says that a large part of his responses are giving people something tangible to work on that will change their expectations of the future, which makes them more positive and energetic in their day to day functioning.

Dan Tomasulo, Ph.D., is a sought-after speaker and author on topics including positive psychology, positive education and positive psychotherapy. His new book, American Snake Pit: Hope, Grit and Resilience in the Wake of Willowbrook, tells the story of the fallout after the closing of New York state’s most controversial state hospital for the mentally disabled. After a groundbreaking expose from Geraldo Rivera about the horrendous living conditions at Willowbrook State School, including overcrowding, patient abuse and questionable treatment methods, plans were made to close its doors. Dan, then a young post-graduate student, was hired to relocate and treat its most seriously disabled residents.

For nearly two decades, I’ve had real world experience on Wall Street and beyond, studying risk and deciphering the intricacies of the stock market around the world to help a range of investors live their dreams: from family offices, to high net worth individuals and institutions, to myself. In an uncertain world, one of the only things we can control is risk. Looking at the world through a risk/reward lens has allowed me to successfully apply my strategy across global markets and asset classes. This passion, combined with dedicated hard work, brought me to a career milestone in 2001 when my partners and I sold our proprietary trading firm of 175 traders to E*Trade Financial. Since then, I’ve created strategies using quantitative and statistical analysis to manage portfolios in a variety of asset classes of varying risk including: options, equities, futures, commodities, treasuries and currencies. With proven diversification expertise and a risk reward strategy that can foresee trends and earn money despite the market, I’m often called upon to share my expertise as a thought leader. Currently, I provide investing strategy oversight for the self-investing platform, InvestedIQ and regular commentary for financial media outlets. As a contributor to the CNBC programs "Fast Money," "Fast Money Halftime Report," "Closing Bell" and "Talking Numbers," I’ve frequently appeared to discuss market shifts, risk assessment outlooks and investing advice. I’m proud to advise a range of investors as CEO and head portfolio manager of the global asset management firm, Vespula Capital and serve as lead strategist for InvestedIQ. When I’m not studying the ever evolving market, you’ll find me at home in Connecticut with my wife and four young children. I’m optimistic that in a few more years, when the children are grown a bit, I’ll have more time to refine my other passion, golf, and get my handicap back in the single digits.
