This is the full podcast of Midas, A Folly in Two Acts & an Epilogue, which was previously dropped as discrete episodes but is available now in its shimmering entirety! Everyone thinks they know the story of Midas and the Golden Touch, some even know the concomitant story of Midas and the Donkey Ears, but there is even more to know about this foollish king of Phrygia than those two stories. Why did Midas get the Golden Touch in the first place? What did that have to do with Dionysus the god and the satyr Silenus? And will Dan ever get paid? Why did Midas get the Donkey Ears? How was this, too, an instance of his foolishness? Was he a racist? How did Midas die in the end? Was he really punished through eternity in Tartarus for his sins? There is a reason this story is a classic as the material herein has multiple parallels to events and persons throughout history not to mention the present day. Enjoy, and thank you for tuning in.

Tara tackles two shocking stories that highlight a disturbing trend in modern America: the normalization—and even celebration—of behavior once unthinkable. First, she exposes a USA Today report that attempts to excuse domestic abuse by blaming ICE trauma, unleashing a fiery critique of media bias, political enablement, and the erosion of accountability. Then, in a bizarre turn, Tara covers the viral case of the "Delco Pooper," a woman who defecated on another's car in a fit of road rage. With biting humor and raw honesty, Tara explores how we got here—and what it says about our national state of mind.

This verse highlights the breaking of barriers between Jews and Gentiles, signifying the universal nature of God's salvation.Verse 34: Peter declares that God shows no partiality, accepting anyone who fears Him and does what is right, regardless of nationality.Peter's Message:Verses 36-43: Peter preaches about Jesus Christ, emphasizing His life, miracles, death, and resurrection.Verse 36: Peace comes through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.Verse 40: God raised Jesus on the third day, witnessed by chosen apostles.Verse 43: Everyone who believes in Jesus receives forgiveness of sins through His name. The Holy Spirit's Confirmation:Verses 44-46: While Peter is still speaking, the Holy Spirit falls on all who hear the message, and they begin speaking in tongues, astonishing the Jewish believers with Peter. This event mirrors Pentecost, confirming that Gentiles are also recipients of the Holy Spirit and God's salvation.Baptism and Inclusion:Verses 47-48: Peter commands that the new believers be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, cementing their inclusion in the faith community. The sequence shows that belief and receiving the Holy Spirit precede baptism, emphasizing faith as the key to salvation.Applications and Observations:Universal Salvation: God's message of salvation is inclusive, breaking down ethnic and cultural barriers.Role of Human Messengers: God uses human instruments like Peter to spread the messageFaith Meets Academia Transform faith-based values into personal growth, career success and academic excellence.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

In this 25-minute episode, Earl examines Morrison's reflection on the challenge of telling stories about those whose lives and voices are often erased—a powerful theme that echoes Saidiya Hartman's work in Venus in Two Acts. This episode offers a thoughtful look at storytelling, identity, and the unspoken lives of “Others.” New listeners can jump right in, while regulars can appreciate the building depth of each chapter. This month we are delighted to be joined by Mario Blaser. Mario is a cultural anthropologist and an Associate Professor of Geography and Archaeology at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Mario has engaged in ethnographic work with communities in many different parts of the world, including in Paraguay and Canada. His fascination with how people lived in other places is rooted in his early experiences living in a small town in Southern Argentina and interacting with visitors passing through. Mario gives us insight into what ethnography is in practice and how it extends beyond just conducting interviews in place. Mario introduces us to the idea of “deep hanging out” and shares how this approach helps the researcher to create a more nuanced and subtle understanding of relations in place. Mario uses this base to unpack for us his insights into the pluriversal world and ways of worlding or how the world is made through practices. In short, the world is not something that is already there, but it produced and reproduced through human and non-human relations in place. This just scratches the surface of this rich conversation. His latest book is For Emplacement: Political Ontology in Two Acts , and its Spanish language twin (is not exactly the same but shares the same “genetic make up”) Incomún: Un ensayo de ontología política para el fin del mundo (único), which is available for free download.   Want to learn more about the duck-rabbit illusion? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit%E2%80%93duck_illusion  Want to learn more about Mario's work? https://www.mun.ca/archaeology/people/faculty/mario-blaser/

The resurrection holds a profound significance for each of us, and it is an event that brings hope and transformation to our lives. In this final part of our Two Acts of God series, we explore ten incredible reasons to be excited about Jesus rising from the dead. We'll discover that the resurrection means our faith is not in vain and that we can rest assured that our salvation is permanent. We'll also see how the resurrection (not just the cross!) is the source of a good conscience. Check out this message to deepen your understanding of Christ's resurrection and celebrate the very core of our Christian faith! Discussion Questions: 1. In your own words, what does the resurrection mean to you? 2. Why is our faith worthless if Christ has not been raised? (see 1 Corinthians 15:17) 3. React to this statement: I will be saved as long as Jesus lives. (see Hebrews 7:25) 4. React to this statement: I have an imparted-life righteousness. (see Galatians 3:21) 5. Why do you think Peter mentions the resurrection (not the cross) as the source of a good conscience? (see 1 Peter 3:21) 6. Of all the benefits of the resurrection, which impacts you the most? Why? In this first message of our Two Acts of God series, we explore what the cross means to us individually and how it shapes our understanding of our identity in Christ. We'll dive into the liberating truth that through the cross, we are declared holy and blameless, and we have perfect peace with God. Imagine the freedom and joy that comes from knowing that God will never refer to our sins again! We'll also learn why the cross means freedom from the Law, and we'll discuss why the message of being crucified with Christ is often neglected today and how embracing this truth can revolutionize our lives. Prepare to be inspired and encouraged as we probe the depths of God's love and grace through the power of the cross! Discussion Questions: In your own words, what does the cross mean to you? The second act is dealing with the cold feet moment in the sale, navigating indecision after initial interest.""The best salespeople excel at putting their figurative arm around the customer's shoulders, instilling confidence, and saying, 'You're making a great decision. A person is either "in Adam" or "in Christ". Those in Adam are under the dominion of sin and death. Those in Jesus Christ, through faith, reign in life through the grace and righteousness of Jesus Christ our Lord. Grace ALWAYS trumps condemnation.

How do we look at, and respond to, work by Black contemporary artists? In this episode, we sat down with Tina Campt, Visiting Professor in Art & Archaeology and the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton. We trace the arc of Prof. Campt's career, from her earlier research on family photography in the African diaspora and how one can “listen to images,” all the way to her current writing and recent trip to this year's Venice Biennale. Along the way, we discuss concepts that elucidate the aesthetic, political, and experiential dynamics of work by artists like Jennifer Packer, Cameron Rowland, Stan Douglas, and Simone Leigh. Maddy is a PhD archaeology student at UCLA who tells us about her undergraduate thesis: “Visions Underfoot: Seneca Village and the Poetics of Remembrance.” It's an interdisciplinary project that combines archaeology, history, and poetry. Maddy used physical objects found by archaeologists at the Seneca Village dig site as a way to creatively ponder the interior lives of the individuals who called it home. This is Part II of our series of episodes on Seneca Village. Everyone faces some kind of challenge in the process of becoming a parent. Today's guest took an unanticipated tour of possible approaches to labor and delivery. Once contractions were confirmed she arrived at the hospital to find her midwife busy with another birthing mother. So in the first half of her birth she was attended to by an OB, and the second half was overseen by a midwife, with very different approaches to labor. And because she was a single parent, she braved postpartum without a partner, which turned out to be a real challenge when colic arrived. For shownotes, see: https://warstoriesfromthewomb.com/

Che spoke to Canadian playwright, screenwriter, and cultural commentator Brad Fraser. He has just released his first memoir, All the Rage: A Partial Memoir in Two Acts and a Prologue. He had resisted writing a memoir for a long time. Still, he seemed to be doing the work of compiling a memoir organically as he told the story of friends lost to the AIDS crisis of the early nineteen nineties on world Aid's Day in social media every year. He had files and files of pictures and stories of a generation of forgotten people and the friends that looked after each other. Brad also shared his early love for reading and how writing became a refuge from his life of rejection, poverty and abuse. He spoke of his experience of boredom and the benefit monotony offers our imagination. Brad discusses his early life and his internal knowledge about the value of caring for himself even if amid abuse; he knew that he needed to offer himself compassion and self-care; he knew that his survival depended on it. Brad discusses his inner knowing that he did not have to stay in the life he was born into was not the life he had to live. He started to write a young age and wrote his first play at 17; the theatre and the gay community became a safe and inspiring haven for him, and writing became a formidable outlet for his anger. He discusses the power of anger and the desire to use it constructively to let it out but not hurt yourself or other people. For Brad, anger became a muse of sorts for seeing and writing what was there but could not be said, and the theatre became a place to cultivate that ability to see and share what was unspoken in our society. The theatre never rejected him; instead, it was a place of education and freedom, he was able to be himself. His anger has become fuel for sharing the invisible stories, always exploring vulnerability, sexuality, morality and inequities in their many forms. He has always been someone who can be alone for long stretches, so the pandemic had not changed that; however, before the pandemic, he developed a relationship with a neighbour by the name of Shirley. And as their friendship developed over five years, so her decline due to Alzheimer's, they became more bonded, and he committed to caring for her in this time in her life. He never imagined this type of connection and yet is essential to his life now. This relationship has fueled his belief that the cure for loneliness and depression is giving a part of yourself away through caring so that someone else can have comfort. Please take a listen to one of the most compelling playwrights of our time. Please share the show, tell us what you think, and check out Brads's new book All the Rage: A Partial Memoir in Two Acts and a Prologue., which comes out on May 2021.
