Auto - Rund ums Auto.
2021 marks the year in which Groupe PSA and FCA are no more. Their new corporation formed from the merger of these two is here and Stellantis is all about the future. But what does that mean for all of the divisions of its former companies. This is something we are going to look into. Everett J. #autolooks
Ken and Chase review the potential consequences of the recent merger of FiatChrysler Automobiles and Groupe PSA that created the world's 4th largest automaker. Its a mine field with a variety of consequences. Find out what the future may hold for the manufacturer.
When Fiat Chrysler announced its intention to merge with European car company Groupe PSA, industry analysts warned that there would be casualties: specifically by way of trimming down the number of vehicles in Dodge and Chrysler’s slow-moving portfolios. But recently Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis -- the new moniker for the now-fourth-largest global automaker -- tried to allay those fears, suggesting that, despite the merger, they would be giving the company’s brands a "strong opportunity" to rebound. So why, a few weeks later, is Dodge CEO Tim Kuniskis all but signing the death certificate on the brand’s well-known Hellcat V8? The answer actually lies outside of the company’s four walls. In an interview with CNBC, Kuniskis said “The days of an iron block supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 are numbered.” But he went on to make an important distinction: while Kuniskis believes that it’s regulations that are making the cost of compliance unsustainable, he does not believe the performance generated by these types of vehicles is necessarily on its way out.Dodge believes, in fact, that these super-performing engines can be replaced by electrics, ushering in what Kuniskis calls “a new Golden Age of muscle cars.” He sees this happening after electric vehicles reach the point of industry standard, after which “the crazy people are going to take the electrification that has now become accessible from a price point and make that performance-based instead of economy-based.”So does Dodge count itself among these “crazy people?” It might not have a choice. Kuniskis likens the environment today to the one that killed the original muscle cars in the early 70s, when oil prices and safety requirements started to make them unworkable. The engines then were adapted to be more efficient, and could now be facing a similar arc as the government and consumers continue to push for energy efficiency standards to tighten. The company has stressed that Dodge will remain a performance brand but, also, that Stellantis will produce an electric variant of every vehicle it unveils between now and 2025. So will the Hellcat EV take the V8’s place? While Dodge doesn’t currently offer any EVs, Kuniskis says that will change because “it’s what’s going to allow us to not fall off the cliff.”
Groupe PSA ja Fiat Chrysler Automobiles löivät hynttyyt lopultakin yhteen, joten millainen on 14 automerkin ja muutaman mantereen Stellantis? Ainakin tarjolla olisi Hellcat-moottoreita, Airbump-puskureita ja monta italialaista luksusmerkkiä pelastettavaksi. Tangenteissa ylitetään Alpit useampaan kertaan. It's 2021, and the year has already given birth to a new automaker! This automaker already has an accomplishment under its belt: the world's 4th largest automotive group, behind Volkswagen, Toyota, and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. On January 16, 2021, Stellantis was born from the merger of French carmaker Groupe PSA and Italian-American carmaker Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Why did the two automakers decide to merge? What does this mean for American car shoppers? We explore those questions, celebrate the RETURN OF RENTAL CAR ROULETTE, and take a listener question about factory equipped dash cameras. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jesse-chan/message

Show #685 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 2nd Sunday February 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. PORSCHE CHARGING SERVICE PRICES: IONITY FROM €0.33/KWH "Porsche, just like many other manufacturers that are introducing electric cars, launched a dedicated service to offer access to multiple charging networks under a single contract authorization account and pricing scheme. The Porsche Charging Service currently includes more than 100,000 AC and DC charging points in 10 countries, as well as around 1,000 Porsche Destination Charging (AC) points "for guests of selected hotels, golf courses or marinas in 20 countries"." reports InsideEVs: "The most important part of the service seems to be access to the IONITY fast-charging network in Europe, which is key to enable long-distance travel and utilize the potential of charging Porsche Taycan at up to 270 kW. As the IONITY ad-hoc prices are €0.79 per kWh, Porsche offers a significant discount to €0.33 per kWh (or equivalent). The Porsche Charging Service comes with a basic annual fee of €179 (or equivalent), but it's free for the first three years. Those who would use the service solely to get a discounted rate at IONITY,would need to charge at least 389 kWh per year (almost eight 50 kWh recharges) to offset the €179, by paying €0.46 per kWh less than ad-hoc." https://insideevs.com/news/396265/porsche-charging-service-prices-ionity/ TOTAL AND GROUPE PSA UNVEIL $5BN EV BATTERY HUB IN FRANCE "A $5.5bn electric vehicle battery manufacturing programme is to be launched in France with the aim of producing one million batteries a year – up to 15 per cent of the European market. The project is a joint venture called Automotive Cell Company and has been established by four French companies: Total and its battery-making subsidiary Saft, and car manufacturing giant Groupe PSA and its affiliate Opel." says Power Engineering INternational: "Work will start on the facility next year and it is expected to start producing EV batteries in 2023. The first phase of the total $5bn project will focus on R&D, including the building of a $220m pilot plant on the land of Saft’s existing Nersac facility. This will trigger an investment decision for a large-scale production plant of 8 GWh initially, rising later to 24 GWh, in the northern Hauts-de-France region. This will be followed by a second one of equal capacity in Germany, with the ambition to reach 48 GWh of combined capacity by 2030" https://www.powerengineeringint.com/2020/01/30/total-and-groupe-psa-unveil-5bn-ev-battery-hub-in-france/ VOLVO BUSES RECEIVES ORDER FOR 60 HIGH-CAPACITY ELECTRIC BUSES FROM MALMÖ "Scandinavian transport operator Nobina has ordered 60 Volvo high-capacity electric buses which will enter service in Malmö, Sweden next year." says Green Car Contress: "The electric high-capacity buses ordered by Nobina in Malmö are of the Volvo 7900 Electric Articulated model, which was launched in autumn 2019. They can carry up to 150 passengers and are 80% more energy-efficient than corresponding diesel models. The buses are propelled by dual electric motors with a two-speed transmission. The Lithium-ion batteries have up to 396 kWh energy storage capacity." https://www.greencarcongress.com/2020/02/20200201-volvo.html A TESLA MODEL 3 GOES FROM ROLLED ALUMINUM TO A FINISHED VEHICLE IN 48 HOURS "Tesla takes raw sheets of rolled aluminum and turns them, along with hundreds of other parts, into finished vehicles at its factory in Fremont, California, in less than 48 hours." according to Clean Technica who listened to a 3rd Row Podcast with Elon and Kimbal Musk: "On the manufacturing front, Kimbal was the one who broached the subject. “What I find amazing is from start to finish, a car is made in 48 hours,” Kimbal said. He talked about the reels of aluminum stock that Tesla uses in its stamping press to form body panels and how the company turns jumbles of parts and raw materials into fully formed vehicles in less than 48 hours. “You can see the rolled aluminum in one section of the factory and you can see the cars coming out the other end.”" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/31/teslas-vehicles-go-from-rolled-aluminum-to-a-finished-vehicle-in-48-hours/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS STEVE WILLIAMS Keep releasing the single topic bonus editions that delve into deeper issues such as the Tesla only or breaking news on a big game change. BEANS OFF GRID I would like more info on battery tech developments on EV daily FROG ROOSTER Martin instead of reading out all the names I would prefer to know how much the electricity companies are charging per KW at their superchargers, so we know who to avoid ! ROMAIN If you had an opportunity for a couple minutes interview with someone close to one of the news subjects, that'd be awesome! MITCHELL BARNOW I love your podcast, but I really wish that there’d be a reason to “watch” your YouTube channel. Rob Maurer of Tesla Daily, @TeslaPodcast , just made his YouTube channel a show to watch. CHRIS HOPKINS For QOTW I would love to see more interviews with people in the industry. I assume with your growing following you can really start pulling in some big names that could have a lot of insight. Even interviewing public officials who are part of agencies making a difference in the EV revolution would be very interesting to me. PAUL CAMILLERI This year I would like to hear the podcast focus entirely on news content. If this means the podcast is shorter/more stories/greater in depth that would be terrific. DAVID TRIMBLE Why not have a regular spot where you highlight the used EV market and focus on specific examples of prices to highlight the great deals out there MARTIN YOUNG I suggest that for your Sunday show you take a break from the news and dedicate the entire show to sharing some of the comments you've received during the week. I would really like to hear the insights and experiences of my fellow listeners, and I believe it would further help to build a sense of community among the listeners of your amazing podcast! I would also like to hear more "Saturday Special" interviews like you have done several times in the past PETER BRYN Every time I hear your opening line, “I go through all the EV stories...” I’m still expecting you to say, “so you don’t have to.” BEN WOOD My suggestion for what you could add to improve EV news daily would be interviews with people in the EV industry about job opportunities. They could explain what sort of qualifications they look for as well as experience and skills. I and im sure many other people who listen to your podcast would like to get a job in an industry that is exciting, rapidly growing and helping to save the planet for future generations. These interviews could be with EV manufacturers, car converters, charger manufacturers, charging networks, energy providers etc. If it was done as a weekend special it may also get sponsored by companies wishing to have jobs within the EV industry advertised on the podcast (as it would be advertising to people who have a genuine interest in the industry). MIKE BERWICK maybe when you tell us about new up and coming cars you could quote the maximum possible charging speeds as this is important on those occasional long trips. I know this information isn’t relevant for (in range trips) we will always have a time where we need to take a trip that’s out of range. JOHN SHELLEY Something different for the podcast in 2020, could you change your outtro ? We get it, ‘there’s no such thing as a self charging hybrid’ !!! ALEX IN MONTREAL I would love you to do more with your Instagram channel as Twitter isn’t my thing So: Saturday specials, recruitment, Instagram, back to the old intro, used car features. NEW QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… On a scale on 1-10, (1 being not at all, 10 being completely) how much does/did environment come into your love of EVs? SOLAR-POWERED LIGHTYEAR ONE CLAIMS TO BREAK NEW GROUND IN AERODYNAMICS "Dutch startup Lightyear also tried to make the car as aerodynamic as possible, further increasing efficiency. Lightyear claims its creation is the most aerodynamic five-seat car to date." says Digital Trends: "Lightyear claims to have achieved a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.20. To put that in perspective, a Tesla Model S has a Cd of 0.23, while a Toyota Prius has a Cd of 0.24 — and those are two of the most aerodynamic conventional cars in production. Getting a lower Cd with four doors and five seats is a major achievement. The Volkswagen XL1 had a lower Cd of 0.19, but that car was a tiny two-seater, with the seats staggered to make the body as narrow as possible. VW ditched practicality in the name of efficiency. The car is driven by four electric motors — one for each wheel. Lightyear doesn’t quote horsepower, but claims the car will do zero to 62 mph in 10 seconds." https://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/solar-powered-lightyear-one-claims-to-be-worlds-most-aerodynamic-five-seat-car/ VOLKSWAGEN R&D BOSS: HOW WE'LL IMPROVE THE ID 3 "Volkswagen's only recently revealed the production version of its ID 3 but as with any good engineer, VW R&D boss Frank Welsch is already thinking about ways to improve it." according to Rachael Burgess for Autocar: "“People need range,” Welsch said. Despite the top-end ID 3 offering 341 miles of range, Welsch believes people want more." Quote: “We won’t do this by giving people a bigger battery because it’s more weight and more cost. It’s about battery density improving. It is not enough to change the drivetrain to electric. We have more room and it drives like a GTI right now. We need other USPs you don’t get in other cars. This first step is a good step but we’re going to make speech recognition more intelligent. We can also make much more use of the augmented reality head-up display in the ID 3. We are the first ones to have this, even in higher segment cars. We can improve it by software upgrades because the hardware is in the car. Now, we have a few situations where you can use it: navigation mode, lane keeping, showing snowflakes on the street if the temperature is below four degrees. We have to assess which situations are useful. We don’t want to do video games.” https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/volkswagen-rd-boss-how-well-improve-id-3 POLESTAR 1 WON'T BE THE BRAND'S LAST HALO MODEL "Polestar opened a sprawling production facility in Chengdu, China this August for its 619-horsepower (462-kilowatt) plug-in hybrid halo car, the Polestar 1. Capped at just 500 units per year, and limited to a production run of three years, only 1,500 examples of the vehicle will roll out of the brand-new facility between now and 2023. But that impressive plant won't sit dormant for long." reports Motor1.com: "While production of the electric Polestar 2 – a mainstream, electric sedan – kicks off at Polestar's Luqia, China manufacturing plant in early 2020, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath promises another range-topping vehicle in the future. It’s more than likely to come from the company's new Chengdu plant, and like all future Polestars, will be fully electric." https://www.motor1.com/news/379487/polestar-planning-second-halo-model/ CITROËN LAUNCHES AN ELECTRIC OFFENSIVE ON ITS LCV RANGE LCV plans to extend its electric offering for business customers with a range of 100% electric compact vans by 2021. This range will be suited to professionals since it offers an outstanding level of comfort, controlled cost of use, the freedom to drive in town centres, the ability to make “last mile” deliveries and keep up with the development of e-commerce business. Within two years the Brand will offer the Groupe PSA’s best know-how in terms of a 100% electric offering, by providing a 100% electric version of Jumpy (launch in 2020) and a 100% electric version of New Berlingo Van (by 2021). This electrification will concern the light commercial vehicles but also the passenger vehicles. https://int-media.citroen.com/en/citro%C3%ABn-launches-electric-offensive-its-lcv-range TESLA INCREASES RANGE AND PRICE OF THE MODEL 3 LONG RANGE "On top of the software update for the now discontinued Model 3 Long Range RWD, Tesla has now updated its online configurator to list the Model 3 Long Range all-wheel-drive range at 322 miles" writes Fred at Electrek: "The automaker has also increased the price of the model from $47,990 to $48,490. Tesla also recently increased the range of the Model S and Model X with the new Raven powertrain." https://electrek.co/2019/11/01/tesla-model-3-long-range-increases-range-price/ MG ELECTRIC SUV VIDEO REVIEW: VERY SOLID, QUIRKY "The WLTP range is 263 kilometers, which is about 160 miles. In the UK, the price is £21,995 with the plug-in grant incentive. Weighing about 3,300 pounds (1,496 kg) empty, this affordable small SUV can seat five. If acceleration is important to you, the 0 to 62 mph time is 8.5 seconds. The top speed is 87 mph (140 km/h), which is on the slow side, but drivers of such a vehicle won’t be Grand Prix racing, so it probably doesn’t matter." says CleanTechnica: "the factory where this vehicle is made is capable of producing several hundred thousand electric vehicles a year. So, if you want this model, you shouldn’t have to wait, unlike some competing EVs. Another feature is the large trunk and a compartment underneath it for the charging equipment. The back seat also has ample room, according to the reviewer." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/10/31/mg-electric-suv-video-review-very-solid-quirky/ TESLA GLOBAL VP SURPRISES WITH GIGAFACTORY 3’S INITIAL MODEL 3 PRODUCTION TARGET "Tesla Gigafactory 3 is just waiting for its final permits before Model 3 production could begin in the complex’s Phase 1 area. As the wait for the site’s certifications continues, Tesla Global VP Grace Tao shared an incredibly optimistic target for the facility’s production activities. If the Tesla executive’s statements prove true, there is a good chance Gigafactory 3 could end up serving as the electric car maker’s dark horse this Q4 2019. " as per Simon Alvarez at Teslarati: " Tao stated that Gigafactory 3 is aiming to start its production activities at a rate of 3,000 Model 3 per week. That’s around 12,000 vehicles per month provided that the company does not encounter hiccups in its operations. Welcome to new Patreon PRODUCER HAROLD PLOEG PORSCHE EXTENDS ELECTRIC SPORTS CAR MODEL RANGE WITH THE TAYCAN 4S It was only in September that the new electric sports car from Porsche celebrated its high-profile premiere on three continents simultaneously. Now, the company is already presenting the third version of the sports saloon with the Taycan 4S, says a press release today. The new model is available with two battery sizes. Following the Taycan Turbo S and the Taycan Turbo, the Taycan 4S is therefore the new entry-level model in the series. A single-deck Performance battery with a total capacity of 79.2 kWh comes as standard. The two-deck Performance battery Plus familiar from the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo is optionally available. The total capacity here is 93.4 kWh. On the UK Porsche configurator the range is from 198 miles to 289 miles for the Performance battery. Price starts at £83,367. https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/2019/products/porsche-taycan-4s-electric-sports-car-entry-level-model-18901.html Fred at Electrek said: "The smaller battery pack results in a range of 407 km (253 miles), and the bigger one should result in 463 km (288 miles) on a single charge based on the WLTP standard. The Taycan 4S with Performance battery Plus becomes the longest-range version of the Taycan. Both versions of the new Taycan 4S can accelerate from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4 seconds and have a top speed of 250 km/h. Porsche says that the new version will start at $103,800 in the US with the smaller battery pack and $110,000 with the Performance battery Plus." https://electrek.co/2019/10/14/porsche-taycan-4s-new-entry-level-battery-pack/ evo.co.uk says: "Separating the 4S from its Turbo counterparts are a few subtle design tweaks, ranging from new 19-inch Turbo S Aero wheels, red brake calipers, marginally less aggressive front and rear bumper designs and slightly raised suspension. Six-piston caliper brakes with 360mm discs are fitted at the front, with four-piston, 358mm units at the rear. Porsche’s 4D Chassis Control can also be found, alongside the same three-chamber adaptive air suspension as on the Turbo and Turbo S. Perhaps the biggest draw of the Taycan 4S will be its price. Starting from £83,367, it seems no less than a bargain when stacked up against the Turbo and Turbo S, with £32,491 sitting between it and the Turbo, and a staggering £55,459 with the Turbo S. Order books open today, and first deliveries are expected in January 2020. Orders for the VW ID.3, the group’s recently unveiled compact electric model, are already covering the production planned until mid-2020, Diess said." To receive the potential extra funding, Singulato would have to speed up development of its first model, a fully electric sport-utility vehicle called the iS6, and make proper preparations for an IPO, one of the people said. A Tokyo-based spokesperson said the Japanese company had recently made an additional investment in Singulato, but declined to specify the amount except to say it was a minor investment. Previously, the total funding of Singulato exceeded 17 billion yuan (~$2.4 billion). These include a variety of passenger cars that are already available to order, new DS 3 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, DS 7 CROSSBACK E-TENSE, all-new Peugeot e-208, 3008 SUV HYBRID4, all-new 508 HYBRID, Vauxhall Corsa-e and Grandland X Hybrid4. These will be joined later in 2020 by all-new Peugeot e-2008 and new Citroën C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid, whilst Groupe PSA will also extend its battery electric (BEV) offering on its award-winning LCV product from 2020 starting with the Citroën Relay and Peugeot Boxer." https://www.automotivepurchasingandsupplychain.com/news/18358/15/Groupe-PSA-reaffirms-UK-electrificaiotn-strategy-at-Automotive-EV-conference LABOUR PARTY PLEDGES TO BAN SALE OF NON-ELECTRIC CARS BY 2030 "A Labour government will aim to end the sale of cars with internal combustion engines by 2030, as part of its plans to tackle the climate emergency. The party is to begin talks with the car industry and trade unions to explore the policies needed to achieve the goal. It says it wants to help an “under siege” industry switch to electric car production." says The Guardian: "It comes as measures to phase out the internal combustion engine gathering pace across Europe. Earlier this month, Denmark called for a plan to phase out diesel and petrol cars and allow a ban on their sale by 2030. It was backed by 10 other EU countries." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/13/labour-pledges-to-ban-sale-of-petrol-diesel-cars WHAT IS MILES PER POUND? From Parkers website: "The Parkers miles per pound (mpp) figure is a new and simple way of comparing the cost to run all cars on sale in the UK today. And it's really simple - using official 'real-world' fuel consumption figures and constantly updated energy and fuel prices, we can show you how far all cars can go for the pound in your pocket. We devised the mpp figure as a way of demystifying the running costs of Electric Vehicles (EVs) because above and beyond their range, and how long they take to charge, there is little uniformity in how carmakers express just how much energy they use. In a nutshell, with this figure you'll be able to directly compare how much any car costs to take on a journey. For EVs that means how much the electricity costs, and for other cars, that'll be how much petrol or diesel you need to pump in at the filling station. This will help potential owners understand the overall running costs of a car in real-world terms that are simple to understand."
Groupe PSA is the multinational manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles sold under the Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Opel and Vauxhall brands. In late February, the French company announced it will soon re-introduce Peugeot to the North American market. Larry Dominique, President and CEO, PSA North America, Inc., is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss with Dominique reasons for the iconic vehicle's return after nearly a three-decade absence. Peugeot will soon return to the North American market Dominique cites facts and figures and industry and trends. He explains that after China, the United States is the world's second-largest car market. The industry is extraordinarily competitive, but Dominique explains Peugeot again realizes it must be sold in North America to correctly be identified as a global brand. With the announcement, Jean-Philippe Imparato, Peugeot Brand Chief Executive Officer, said: “With more than 208 years of history, including two early victories of the Indianapolis 500, Peugeot's international adventure continues with new territories and new challenges. Our clear positioning as the best high-end generalist brand is based on a solid and coherent strategy, which all the teams are eager and proud to bring to the North American customers, with this promise always kept and renewed, to include Peugeot's Excellence, Allure and Emotion in each of our cars." Dominique didn't offer a time frame or specific vehicles Peugeot will offer in North America. But he did say it will follow industry trends, which likely means an SUV and a hybrid or and electric vehicle. With its pending North America re-entry, Peugeot will be offered in approximately 160 countries on five continents. The brand sold more than 1.7 million vehicles in 2018. VOLKSWAGEN'S ELECTRIFY AMERICA BUYS TESLA DEVICES FOR EV CHARGING STATIONS Reuters: "Volkswagen AG unit Electrify America said on Monday it will install Tesla Inc battery storage packs at more than 100 charging stations across the United States to keep costs down for drivers charging electric vehicles. Tesla Powerpack battery systems draw power from the grid during off-peak hours and store it for use during peak hours to avoid or reduce demand charges. Electrify America will install most of its battery packs in areas of the United States where there is a higher concentration of electric vehicle owners, particularly on the West Coast and the Northeast." Bloomberg: "The 210-kilowatt battery systems will each have about 350 kilowatt-hours of capacity. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed and a Tesla spokesman declined to comment. TechCrunch: "The company will begin the next phase of installations this summer. Electrify America’s bet on Tesla battery systems illustrates the deep need for electric vehicle charging infrastructure that is low cost, easy to access and as fast as possible. It’s not enough to simply dot highways and urban areas with public chargers. The deal also represents a small, yet possibly fruitful area for Tesla as it tries to grow its energy storage business." The firm’s biggest installation to date is the 100-megawatt facility in Hornsdale, South Australia, used to help the renewables-dependent state avoid blackouts. In a deal expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2019, the California automaker has offered $4.75 per share for the company. That’s a healthy 55-percent increase above the energy storage technology company’s share price of $3.07 at Friday’s market closing. The transaction is said to take the form of a stock swap and received unanimous approval from the Maxwell board." reports Domenick at InsideEVs: "Maxwell is mostly known for its ultracapacitors, which are used by other automakers. Indeed, Volvo’s Chinese parent company Geely partnered with the firm to use the energy storage devices in five of its hybrid products. But does that mean Tesla has picked them up for that particular technology? Maybe, but it should be noted that Maxwell, which has a footprint in Germany, South Korea, China, as well as the United States, has other tech that makes it valuable." Tesla told Electrek: "“We are always looking for potential acquisitions that make sense for the business and support Tesla’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” Electrek said: "The automaker might be more interested with Maxwell’s dry electrode technology that they have been hyping recently. Maxwell claims that its electrode enables an energy density of over 300 Wh/kg in current demonstration cells and they see a path to over 500 Wh/kg." https://insideevs.com/tesla-buys-maxwell-technologies-solid-state/ https://electrek.co/2019/02/04/tesla-acquires-ultracapacitor-battery-manufacturer/ PANASONIC CUTS PROFIT OUTLOOK ON SLOWING CHINA DEMAND; TESLA BUSINESS A BRIGHT SPOT "Japan’s Panasonic Corp cut its annual profit outlook after disappointing quarterly earnings it blamed on a slowing Chinese economy hit by a trade war with the United States that hurt demand for auto components and factory equipment." reports Reuters: "China’s shrinking car market has crimped demand for automotive components, Panasonic said, while sales have also dropped for electronic devices used in air conditioners. From Jose Pontes at CleanTechnica "After a 3 month streak of record-breaking sales, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in December just kept on pushing forward. China registered over 180,000 PEVs in December, making it the 4th record month in a row and achieving 70% year-over-year (YoY) growth. That meant that 2018 sales ended north of the 1 million units mark. Yes, over 1 million PEVs in one year. And to think that 2017 was the first year that plug-ins reached 1 million sales globally. The PEV market share hit yet another all-time best, ending the month with 8% share. The 2018 PEV market share ended at a record 4.2% share, double the share of 2017." https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/03/8-plug-in-electric-vehicle-market-share-in-china/ 2020 PEUGEOT 208 EV SPIED COLD-WEATHER TESTING "Following the reveal of the all-new Clio, Groupe PSA is feeling the pressure from the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance for new, world-class products. The French part of the alliance won’t have it easy once Peugeot comes out with the all-new 208, which shares the CMP with the Opel Corsa." according to AutoEvolution: "Spied cold-weather testing in Scandinavia, the Peugeot looks similar to internal combustion-engined test mules. Styling is inspired from the 508, probably the coolest-looking sedan in the segment. The camera integrated into the rearview mirror enables Level 2 autonomous driving functions. By 2025, the French automaker plans to electrify 100 percent of its lineup, including Opel and Vauxhall." https://www.autoevolution.com/news/2020-peugeot-208-ev-spied-cold-weather-testing-132148.html MOBILE METERING: HONDA BUYS INTO UBITRICITY "Honda has acquired a significant stake in the Berlin-based company Ubitricity as part of a new financing round. The Japanese automobile manufacturer may have far-reaching plans with Ubitricity’s mobile metering technology." says an Electrive report: "electrive was able to glean the information about Honda’s participation in the Berlin-based company specializing in mobile electricity meters that for example turn street lamps into charging posts. Now a short announcement from deutsche-startups.de (based on the changes in the commercial register) confirms the Japanese manufacturer’s investment.Honda’s first fully electric model for the European market, the Urban EV, will probably go on sale in 2020. When a national brands align with Pop Culture, double standards, hypocrisy, and selling out can occur. Is that the case with Genesis aligning with Hip-Hop artist Lil Wayne for the Genesis Halftime Show on ESPN's Monday Night Football. Themen heute: Starkes Comeback: Opel/Vauxhall seit einem Jahr Teil der Groupe PSA /// Stop-and-go in Richtung Heimat - Stauprognose für 3. bis 5. August 1.
Friday 6th April 2018. MASSIVE BATCH OF TESLA VINS REGISTERED We heard earlier in the week Tesla is making over 2,000 Model 3’s a week so it will come as no surprise they’ve registered almost 5,000 new VINs. At this rate it will last them about two weeks. It’s just a week after they registered 2,000 VINs so it looks like that exponential curve that Elon Musk talks about might be starting. A reminder that by Saturday, 30th June, they said they should be making 5,000 every week. Even if they maintained 5,000 a week for the second half of the year it would be 130,000 Model 3 vehicles in the second half of the year. And there’s every chance the curve will continue, as the target is 10,000 per week by year end. GROUPE PSA GET SERIOUS Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Opel/Vauxhall, and its Free2move all come under the Groupe PSA umbrella, and it’s creating a Business Unit dedicated to electric vehicles, effective 1 April, responsible for defining and deploying the Group’s electric vehicle strategy and rolling out the related products and services. Meanwhile CEO Carlos Tavares said European Union fines for companies that miss tougher CO2 reduction targets could bring a major European automaker "to its knees," allowing a Chinese buyer to step in with its own electric vehicle technology "The impact is very obvious. It's going to create a Chinese Trojan Horse in Europe," Tavares told an industry event hosted by French car magazine Le Journal de l'Auto. PSA and other European carmakers are facing declining sales of fuel-efficient diesel models, making it harder to meet CO2 targets and avoid large fines. UK DIESEL CRASH Here in the UK, a bad day for diesel and good one for electric cars. ThisIsMoney says: “diesel sales plummeting by more than a third in the industry's most important month of the year. Sales of diesel models, which have been subject to additional taxes in the last year, plunged by 37 per cent. Registrations of these 'cleaner' hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles rose by 5.7 per cent last month.” In March 2017 22,818 electric cars were sold which went up to 24,126 last month. That’s a total market share up from 4.1% to 5.1%. Year to date, which is basically looking at Q1 combined, shows an even better picture. In Q1 2017, 33,405 electric cars were sold and that went up to 36,693 this year, and increase of 9.8%. MORE CHINA INVESTMENT Electrek reports that: “Chinese EV start-up Singulato Motors said that it secured funding to invest $2.39 billion USD in a massive manufacturing hub in East China over the next five years.” The Singulato iS6 is their SUV which has a range of 400 km (~250 miles), 0-60mph of four seconds, and a price range starting at $32,000. SUBSCRIBE TO AN EV How about spending a monthly fee for a BMW - including insurance, maintenance, and roadside assistance? How about unrestricted access to a select portfolio of BMW vehicles?
