As Covid-19 has swept the world we’ve become used to seeing musicians in lockdown presenting videos of virtual performances. But for the Grammy-award winning American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre, the idea of a virtual choir is nothing new because he pioneered the concept over 10 years ago. His first choir of 185 singers became a global phenomenon and has been seen by millions on YouTube. More virtual choir projects followed and the choir videos have featured as installations and as part of the 2012 Olympics and the Davos World Economic Forum. Now Eric’s just released his largest Virtual Choir project to date, which premiered on YouTube a few days ago. It features 17,572 singers from around the world performing his new piece “Sing Gently” for which he’s written the words and the music. Eric talks to Emma Kingsley about creating this latest project, the inspirations for his other compositions, the idea of the musical “golden brick” and how his early dreams of becoming a pop star changed through singing Mozart in the college choir.

#032. Ubuntu means "a person is a person through other people." Dr. Joseph Ohrt of Central Bucks High School-West instinctively knows what it means, evidenced by the remarkable choral program he's built. In fact, we didn't even mention the Zulu word in our conversation. Dr. Ohrt just gets it. There is no English translation for the word ubuntu. The term "community" is the closest we have, but it falls far short. Regardless of the limits of language, we all know deep down that a person realizes their human potential not by achieving certain things or recognition, or titles, or money, or fame, but through their relationships with other people. "Because you are, I am," was one of the favorite phrases of Nelson Mandela, who Dr. Ohrt's choir sang for when Madiba visited Philadelphia. Dr. Ohrt's ensembles have sung for many heads of states, and have performed at esteemed venues such as the White House, and Carnegie Hall many times over. But these kinds of honors are not ultimately what is central to what a choir is. What's central is ubuntu. It's not a coincidence that both ubuntu and choir are central to South African township life. Choir is the ultimate manifestation of ubuntu. Today Dr. Ohrt talks to us about what's happening with his choirs right now and how important it is for connection to remain at the center of how we are engaging our choirs as we endure the pandemic. As Covid-19 has swept the world we’ve become used to seeing musicians in lockdown presenting videos of virtual performances. But for the Grammy-award winning American composer and conductor Eric Whitacre, the idea of a virtual choir is nothing new, because he pioneered the concept over 10 years ago.

This Repertoire Exploration Episode, with Composer/Conductor Dr. Michael John Trotta, discusses the concept of "how to respond to the people in front of you.” We specially talk about Dr. Trotta’s role as an educator and how his experiences teaching elementary, middle, high, and college influences his job as a composer. The conversation focuses on the flexibility of three titles, why they were written, and how they were adapted. By the end of the episode, we see how “responding” to the group in front of you and knowing your singers allows us as choral educators to build life-long choir lovers who know and feel their value. Whether a full 8-part split, regular SATB, or 2-part and unison, excellent music that is thoughtfully written can assist our singers in making beautiful musical moments, and not just learning the notes and rhythms. Through this rep exploration, we are reminded that it is part of our job as music educators to constantly make relatable parallels to great music so that our ensembles can know that indeed their presence and their effort do matter. Graduating seniors are closing one chapter of life this spring and beginning a new one, during one of the most uncertain periods in all of our lifetimes. And as we look toward that segment next week, a project aimed at college students has caught our attention this week. On social media, a Zoom-style video making the rounds featured the music department at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. It’s their very own version of Carole King’s timeless song, “You’ve Got A Friend.” Instrumental and choral faculty alike lent their voices to different lines of the song. They also played violins and cellos and, in a few cases, shared some visual antics. Take a listen and hear the masterminds behind the project describe how they brought it all together as a gift for their students.

Refresh, reflect, reset... Artist Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg invites you to sit and listen to the dawn chorus, questioning how the city may sound without birds. Through the power of humming Melissa Mongiat, co-founder of Daily Tous Les Jours, highlights a metaphysical connection through music.  Light and sound pollution from our 24-hour urban lifestyle affects birds, which are singing earlier, louder, for longer, or at a higher pitch to communicate. Some species are better at adapting to survive. Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg (https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/residents/alexandra-daisy-ginsberg) ’s installation in 24/7, Machine Auguries questions how the city might sound with changing, homogenising, or diminishing bird populations. Solos of chiffchaffs, great tits, redstarts, robins, thrushes, and entire dawn choruses were used to ‘train’ two neural networks – a Generative Adversarial Network, or GAN – pitted against each other to sing. Reflecting how birds develop their song from each other, a call and response spatialises the evolution of a new language, as samples of each stage (or epoch) in the GAN’s training reveals the artificial birds’ increasing realism.  Melissa Mongiat, co-founder of Daily Tous Les Jours (https://www.dailytouslesjours.com/fr/projets) presents I Heard There Was a Secret Chord, a participatory humming channel that reveals an invisible connection uniting those people around the world listening to Leonard Cohen’s song Hallelujah. Real time user data representing the number of these listeners is transformed into a virtual choir – each online listener represented by a humming voice in the space. These sounds are transformed into low frequency vibrations as you start humming along, allowing you to feel a collective resonance. The work is both a scientific and a spiritual experiment, highlighting the metaphysical connection between people on a common wavelength.  Featuring contributions from exhibition curator Sarah Cook and Jonathan Reekie, co-curator of 24/7 and Director of Somerset House.  The exhibition 24/7 - A Wake Up Call For Our Non-Stop World (https://www.somersethouse.org.uk/whats-on/247) at Somerset House takes visitors on a multi-sensory journey from the cold light of the moon to the fading warmth of sunset through five themed zones and contains over 50 multi-disciplinary works that will provoke and entertain. Richard and Eric discuss the now famous Virtual Choir phenomenon and its varying ramifications on not only the choral community but on greater social society.  In their critique, they attempt the impossible by unifying seemingly disparate ideas of thinkers and philosophers such as Debord, Baudrillard, Eco, Kierkegaard, all in too short of a time.  Is the virtual choir actually a choir?  Does the virtual choir share aspects of previously seen social experiments in the recent past?  Are there claims the virtual choir makes that could be seen as problematic or illusory?  Trying to look deeply at this very popular social art-form proves to be not only challenging but enlightening.Baudrillard, J.
