Unrefreshing sleep is one of the hallmarks of fibromyalgia, and it's hard to face the day when you wake up feeling depleted. With Fibromyalgia, we find three significant sleep issues that we must address: struggle with getting to sleep, problems with staying asleep, and calming the overactive fight or flight so we can get restful sleep. Sleep is essential for having the mental and emotional energy to do the things we need to do to feel better, and Tami believes that her fibromyalgia would not be in remission without tackling her sleep issues. Unfortunately, there's no one-size-fits-all solution; everyone has to find the right recipe for their sleep. Today's guest, Sovann Pen, joins Tami to talk about why sleep is vital to our overall health and how you can get better sleep. In this conversation, Sovann and Tami discuss Sovann's 25-year sleep career, how different people are affected by poor sleep quality, thinking about how your life could be better with better sleep, don't assume your symptoms are solely due to fibromyalgia, how not getting enough sleep leaves us vulnerable to burnout, the high correlation between fibromyalgia and sleep apnea, the four stages of sleep, why people with fibromyalgia often struggle with getting restful sleep, Tami's experience with sleep studies, what a sleep study entails, the three main sleep issues people with fibromyalgia experience, why you need to start sleep hygiene as soon as you wake up, when to consider meeting with a sleep specialist, the right place for sleep aids and medication for sleeping, when to take melatonin, figuring out what's waking you up in the night, negative sleep thoughts, social media has a negative effect on many people's sleep, digging deeper into the symptoms to address the core problem, how you can use the Wellness Wheel, Sovann's tips for making friends with your CPAP machine, the need to slow down and take care of yourself, and more. Be sure to tune in to next week's special bonus episode, where Tami will share fibro-specific sleep information, including studies, supplements, and topics she teaches in her Certified Fibromyalgia Advisor™ class.     Note: This episode is not meant to be medical advice. I set an intention before I talk to somebody about this and you kind of know professionally when someone wants to change. You need to ask them, 'Are you in the headspace right now to receive advice, or do you still just need to tell me what is going on, and do you just need support at this point in time?' When I've found them to be in a space where they are willing to receive and act upon advice, I do it in a very, very gentle way. I just say, 'Look, when you step out because I know you're just stuck in it and it might be harder to see the big picture and how it's effective, but this is not serving you. I know you have so much potential and if we could just change this one thing, I think it will help you make real progress.' - Autumn Smith Are You Stressed Out Lately? Their 100% Grass Fed Beef Sticks are unlike anything else on the market. In fact, they were recently voted in Paleo Magazine as one of the top snacks of the year. The reason is that they are committed to making the highest quality, clean products that are free from problematic ingredients. Their beef comes from 100% grass fed cows raised entirely on natural grass pastures by family farmers right here in the USA. As a result they are healthy and happy. PaleoValley's Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks Paleovalley Pasture-Raised Turkey Sticks were created to make healthy snacking easier. Their turkey sticks are made from turkeys who are allowed to live as nature intended... on organic grass pastures with plenty of sunshine, fresh air and room to exercise. The result of raising turkeys in such a natural way is a much healthier, clean protein with higher levels of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3s. Unfortunately, virtually all turkey in the USA is conventionally raised with a small portion being "free range" – a virtually meaningless term that simply means the turkeys were allowed access to the outdoors. However, most "free range" turkeys only have access to an outdoor dirt field with no pasture in sight. Their truly pasture-raised turkeys are given full access to outdoor, pesticide-free pasture with plenty of grass and insects for them to nibble on. When you take it, it is going to promote not only blood sugar stability but it's also been shown to improve fat burning. The number one thing that I hear from people is that it takes away their cravings so you're using it in a beautiful, beautiful way that's going to help your relationship with food too. As the apple cider vinegar complex promotes satiety in your body; it makes you feel fuller longer. There's also research on how you can use it on the skin and its impact on cholesterol. The list goes on and on." - Autumn Smith Naturally Improve Blood Sugar "As a teenager, I would often be on this blood sugar roller coaster. At that time, I had no idea it was profoundly affecting my mood. Fortunately, I was able to stabilize that and once I started studying health, I realized unstable blood sugar will also actually increase your risk for pretty much every degenerative chronic disease possible. It can lead to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's, and even more. However, if you use apple cider vinegar or something similar to bring your blood sugar stability back to normal, you will have this incredible wealth of bandwidth all of a sudden. The benefits are so powerful; you will have more energy, vitality, and will even sleep better." - Autumn Smith Being One with Mother Earth "In our modern world, we think there's a pill for every ill but that's not the answer we should be looking for. Here at Paleovalley, our products like our Apple Cider Vinegar Complex and beef and turkey sticks are about sharing the beautiful wisdom that exists between nature and our bodies. Even though we have evolved using that intelligence, we have also become very disconnected from the planet. Our products like the ACV Complex focus on trying to help people come back to that. Without a car, without childcare, without a grocery store, a pharmacy, or a place to get blood work done, how does a person with diabetes in rural Saskatchewan keep their disease in check? Those are the questions Dr. Stu Skinner and his Wellness Wheel team members face each day, as they treat Cree and Saulteaux patients on the Day Star, George Gordon, Kawacatoose and Muskowekwan First Nations in south-eastern Saskatchewan.   "We see a lot of patients with diabetic foot infections," said Skinner, a University of Saskatchewan-trained physician who specializes in infectious diseases and internal medicine.  Some of his patients typically walk 5 km or more in a day. Some don't realize their feet are injured until it's too late -- when gangrene appears.    In this episode, he describes the complications of uncontrolled diabetes, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, vision loss, and amputations. Facing tough financial choices, discrimination and long travel times, he said a number of his patients won't seek health care until it's too late. "I always joke that we need to go back to the old doctor model with the black bag where you go to people's houses and you treat them there because that's what works," Skinner said.   To build trust and to help patients better control their diabetes, Skinner's team will spend the next year recruiting ‘peer champions' in the area who also have diabetes — people who better understand what day-to-day life as a diabetic is like. “People who have that lived experience have a lot to contribute and really are key,” said Susanne Nikolai, nurse lead and Wellness Wheel's clinical coordinator.  Nikolai said working with Skinner and his team has been  “absolutely the best nursing that I've done in my almost 30 years as a registered nurse."   Earlier this year, the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation approved a $7,500 grant for 'Culturally Responsive “Diabetes 101” Training and Knowledge Mobilization Among Indigenous Peers Living with Diabetes in Regina Urban Hub and Indigenous Communities'.  Skinner plans to use the money to build trust with his patients, to connect them with diabetic peers in their community, and to find out what's stopping them from getting the care they need.   "Many of our patients don't have transportation or they need childcare," said Skinner.  "If I, as a physician, mail out a letter for an appointment to someone, but they can only check their mailbox maybe once every three to four months, how are they ever going to know about the appointments, even if they could make it there?" Hear why this matters so deeply to Skinner, Nikolai and the Wellness Wheel team in this episode.

So the holistic part refers to the wellness wheel, and the different components of our health. I have been playing with this concept of the wellness wheel. The things that could constitute optimal human wellness for each individual. I discussed and presented the 7 most prominent wellness aspects in my life currently. I do believe that these are subject to change and will change as we change and grow as humans. Between Purpose and serving, Love and relationships, Growth and challenge, Movement, Faith, Nutrition, fun and presence I feel I hit many of the most important aspects of wellness. In this episode, we move from the heart (our last episode featuring Dr. Akil) to the brain, with today's guest Dr. Jacqueine Chan. Dr. Chan is the author of the book, Regenerate Your Brain, A Breakthrough Plan to Regain Your Brilliance. This book tells the story of her own encounters with brain injury (a bike accident, a tick bite, and a stroke) as well as her incredible recovery plan. This episode is somewhat different from typical Positive on Publishing episodes in that it is more of a presentation. You can certainly enjoy the content via audio, but the video will be the recommended format for consuming this content. The video will be available on my YouTube channel, Make Everything Fun. Due to the presentation style, we don't have our typical “fun nuggets” from the show. Instead, I've recapped the 8 sections of the wellness wheel below. I've also added some fun nuggets which I refer to as “mantras”, much in line with the takeaways from my other podcast, Mountain Mantras. I've also added two alliterations just for fun. 8 Sections of the Wellness Wheel 1. Nourishing the brain 2. Balancing healthy hormones 3. Healing leaky gut and leaky brain 4. Cooling brain inflammation 5. Detoxifying for clear cognition 6. Boosting mitochondria 7. Soothing the mind 8. Building new neural pathways Mantras Mantra #1: You can empower your doctor to give you better care through books like Dr. Chan's guide. Mantra #2: Healing takes place at slower brain waves. Mantra #3: Wisdom lives in the inner structures of the brain (Dr. Chan mentions the hypothalamus as well as the pineal gland). Mantra #4: Find your feet. Mantra #5: Relax your jaw. Mantra #6: Circulation is key, whether it is your blood, your lymphatic system, or your Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF). Mantra #7: Detoxification is a life-long job. Mantra #8: Energize (see Dr. Chan's tips for mitochondria), then rest. And here are a few “fun alliterations that I wrote down during Dr. Chan's presentation: Keep an eye on Kale! Glyphosate can make you Gloomy Saunas Support the detoxification System (see/hear my interview with Sunlighten CEO Connie Zack: https://makeeverythingfun.com/radio/e101-connie-zack/) HBOT is Healing (See/hear my interview with Dr. Jason Sonners: https://makeeverythingfun.com/podcast/e061-jason-sonners/) About Dr. Jacqueline Chan Dr. Chan graduated from Mount Holyoke College magna cum laude in philosophy & then did a short stint in an MBA finance program on Wall Street in New York City. Jacqueline decided her true calling was in medicine. In 1994 she graduated from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. They find that the people who have the most stable blood sugar actually live the longest lives. When I got married, I realized just how amazing life is and so I wanted to create a tonic that would help me promote longevity on a regular basis. So I found ingredients that would first of all help bring down inflammation naturally but also stabilize blood sugar because I know it's so important and so many people are lacking it. This search led me to apple cider vinegar and I was just blown away by it. Hippocrates supposedly it and it's been used for thousands of years for so many different applications." - Autumn Smith   Our Beautiful Connection With Nature   "We are in this world today where we think there's a pill for every ill and that's the answer were should be looking for but our company, Paleovalley, and our products like our Apple Cider Vinegar Complex are about sharing the beautiful wisdom that exists between earth and our bodies. We've evolved using that intelligence yet somehow I feel like we have become very disconnected from nature and so our product line focuses on trying to help people come back to that. We look at the wisdom of Mother Earth and we just bring the highest quality ingredients from nature into a version that people can use on a daily basis." - Autumn Smith   High Blood Sugar & Chronic Disease     "As a teenager, I was on this blood sugar roller coaster that I had no ideas was profoundly affecting my mood but once I stabilized that and started studying health, I realized that it's not just fun to have unstable blood sugar because you're hangry, it legitimately increases your risk for pretty much every degenerative chronic disease there is, right? Insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's and more. But if we can use apple cider vinegar or something similar to bring blood sugar stability back to normal, you have this incredible wealth of bandwidth all of a sudden; you have more energy, vitality, and can sleep better. This comes into place with all of the other factors on the wellness wheel." - Autumn Smith     Links From Today's Show  Paleovalley's Apple Cider Vinegar Complex 352 Autumn Smith: How To Heal Your Brain With Food  135 Autumn Smith: The Truth About Food And Mental Health ‎Optimize Paleo Podcast by Paleovalley The #1 Nutrient to Boost Your Mental Health 293 Dr. Jade Teta 397 Kara Collier 384 Shawn Stevenson 364 Alison Armstrong Paul Chek | All Is God 336 Joe Sheehey Paleovalley Beef Sticks Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Belcampo Meat Co Botanic Tonics breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Paleovalley Facebook Instagram Autumn Smith Facebook   About Autumn Smith Autumn Fladmo Smith has been a health enthusiast her entire life. Mental health in Academia: Episode Notes In this episode of the Stepsero podcast we draw attention to mental health in Academia once again. According to the available data, the prevalence of depression in academic communities is 6 times higher compared to the general population. On top of that, about 40% to 50% of PHD students are affected by anxiety or depression.Jelena Brasanac knows this all too well and co-Founded Dragonfly Mental Health, a non-profit organization created to address mental health in Academia at a systemic level. The typically hierarchical structure that is often found within the academic world led Jelena and her colleagues to ideate what they call “Wellness Wheel”, which operates on five distinct domains of excellence: Department committee:An additional layer between different hierarchical levels in academia, represented by people from different backgrounds and all career levels of an academic community. It is poised to work on sustainable actions and strategic initiatives regarding mental health.Peer Network: to offer support and integration within the community and facilitate reach outs. Peer networks would work closely with department committees to help promote relevant activities.Mental Health Literacy: Talks and workshops for individuals to better educate themselves on all matters related to mental health in Academia. Skills Workshops: Primarily focused on the relationship between mentors and students, being this a complex and delicate power-dynamic within Academia. Thanks to these workshops, research leaders can be better equipped to support their students, for example by spotting early signs of burnout.Fighting Stigma: There still is a significant stigma attached to mental health within Academia, as individuals often struggle due to their fear of being judged by others. Educational Initiatives targeting such stigma are set to alleviate any negative perceptions around mental health challenges within this environment. At this moment in time Dragonfly Mental Health counts on more than 100 volunteers coming from more than 15 different countries and over 22 disciplines, and is looking to attract partners that could help make their plans financially actionable. Our Guest: Jelena Brasanac Jelena Brasanac is a PhD candidate in the Medical Neurosciences graduate program at Charite Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany. She received a NeuroCure PhD fellowship for pursuing her research on stress and depression. Her work is investigating stress signaling dysfunction in subpopulations of blood cells and its relationship to stress-related brain areas. Jelena holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Molecular Biology and Physiology from the University of Belgrade in Serbia, where she also completed her master's studies in Experimental Biomedicine.Always driven towards action when recognizing problems and preferring bottom-up approach, Jelena has experience from working in NGO and student-led initiatives to organizing by students for students conferences. Considering mental health as an essential part of our overall health and a major determinant of the quality of our lives she co-founded Dragonfly Mental Health, a non-profit on a quest for cultivating mental health in academia. Jelena believes that giving the voice to and empowering early career researchers will lead to better and more credible science and foster a cultural shift in academia towards a more open, inclusive, and supportive environment.References:Jelena Brasanac Linkedin profileDragonFly Mental Health - website Listen to the next Episode All Podcast Episodes

Good luck! :)   The Twelve Categories of Wellness   "Health is not only about fitness and nutrition, it's also about balancing all of the other aspects of your life." - Devon Dionne   On this week's episode, Devon and I are sharing one of the best tools to help you take the first step to owning your wellness: The Wheel of Wellness. Health and wellness is more than just eating healthy every day and hitting the gym a couple of times a week. It can be about mindfulness, relationships, self-purpose and more. To help you get a better understanding of your health wellness, we've broken it down into 12 different categories. The 12 Sections for the Wheel of Wellness: Nutrition Physical Fitness and Activity Health Relationships Career Finances Spirituality Creativity, Fun, and Recreation Self-Love Personal Growth and Education Environment and Nature Self-Purpose and Service to the Community   To get started, first you'll have to grab a piece of paper and something to write with. Draw a circle on the piece of paper and divide it into the 12 different sections of wellness. Rate each category from 0-5 as far as satisfaction and how you feel about them. Are you happy with your personal growth or could you be doing more? Draw 5 line markers, label them 1-5 and color in each section. Here is an awesome example of a Wheel of Wellness by Jessica Burgueñ0 with which she uses a 1-10 rating scale.   Reviewing Your Wellness Wheel   "Is your wheel jagged and crooked or is it a perfectly balanced wheel? Even if it is balanced, how did you rate each category? Is everything at a 4 or 5 or are they at 1 or 2 and you just feel flat?" - Rob and Devon Dionne   Take some time to see where you're at with your wellness wheel. Is everything balanced or are there a couple of areas that you could focus on? Now, make a list of what you are able to do to make those positive changes happen. For example, if you want to improve your nutrition, try to do a meal prep day once a week or pack healthy snacks. If you need to improve your relationship with someone, schedule in some uninterrupted time to just be with them. You don't have to try to improve everything at once. Simply pick 1-3 sections from your wheel that really motivate you to start making some positive changes.    Evaluating Your Wellness Wheel   "Every time you set out to try something and you do not succeed at it, it's not a failure, but a learning experience. When you reflect on your progress, it just means you're looking at information. You're not judging yourself." - Rob and Devon Dionne   Take some time once a week to look at your accomplishments. Grab your wellness wheel and see if you've made any progress. Don't judge yourself, just reflect on what you've done so far with your goals. There's no failing here; only learning. If you're not making the progress you want to make or you're not motivated to keep trying, go back and reflect once again on your Wheel of Wellness. Choose different sections to focus on or make new goals for yourself. Evaluate and create a new Wheel of Wellness for yourself every 3 months. Surprising enough, sometimes all it takes is 3 months to see some change!     Thursday Night Live Q & A Sessions with Rob and Devon Each Thursday night at 7pm PST via the closed Open Sky Fitness Facebook Group , Devon and I will be online to answer an questions you may have about health, wellness, fitness, nutrition, lifestyle etc. Ask us anything!   Join The Open Sky Fitness Podcast Group!
