How embarrassing that the Biden administration continues to lean on Hollywood personalities to back them up. Earlier this month, Mark Hammill joined the White House press conference room to praise President Biden. This time, Robert De Niro held a press conference outside Trump's trial in New York to slam him. We react to it.  Also on the show, we talk about why schools should switch to a year round curriculum and why Memphis was listed at the bottom of the worst-pizza-city list. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When people think of Batman movies from the 90's, they usually remember rubber nipples and Michelle Pfeiffer before thinking about the animated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Although a fan favorite now, the movie bombed in theaters and made such a small wave, many people didn't know it existed until years later. Today we're taking a second look to celebrate this once forgotten classic to celebrate it's rich story, sharp animation, and of course the voice talents of Kevin Conroy and Mark Hammill.Join the Best of the Rest discord: https://discord.gg/86P7jJXNPb Merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/botrcast Email: bestoftherestpod@gmail.com Social Media @BotRCast on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook Bonus content: Youtube Theme song (vocals) by Mark Benavides: Instagram Music by Mitch: Twitter, SoundCloud Logo by Alex Brinegar: https://beardodoesdesign.com/ Additional artwork by Phillip Chacon, C7Productions: Instagram

One of the staples of many science fiction movies and TV shows is the spaceship. Not merely a vehicle, the spaceship seems to take on a personality of its own through a combination of unique design and the way it is perceived by the characters around it. It can be home for some, or a fighting machine, but a character's spaceship often defines them. Your intrepid crew had so many ships to choose from, over the many decades of sci fi films and TV shows, we each made our own top ten lists, and then through arcane methods, pulled together a combined list from our many picks to create quite a varied group of ships. Who made the list? What ship is our number one pick? You're going to have to listen to find out!!But - we will say that our oldest ship is from the 1950s, a number of ships are from non-American productions, and only one pick on our list was on all three of our individual lists! So give it a listen and let us know your thoughts. We will also go over our individual lists too.Our Sensor Sweep focuses on a Bay Area legend, John Stanley, who took up hosting Creature Features from Bob Wilkins in 1979 and continued until 1984. During his tenure on the show, Stanley interviewed tons of celebrities, and he shares those interviews in his new book, The Career that Dripped with Horror. Stanley reminisces about his times hosting Creature Features and later appearances at conventions and other shows, and has transcripts of his interviews with folks like Carrie Fisher, Mark Hammill, Christopher Reeve, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Adam West, and tons more. Whether you're a fan of Creature Features, or never heard of it, the interviews alone are worth picking this one up!All right cadets, that's it for this go round. TV-SHOW DISCUSSION:  Melvin and Daniel discuss the highly divisive new installment in the Masters of the Universe franchise. Topics: After restarting Arrested Development (again x16+), Melvin wonders what it would be like for the Russo brothers to return to comedy. Daniel imagines their return to the MCU for a Marvel Comedy procedural. Introducing Masters of the Universe: Revelation (S1E1-5) [8:38] Basically, Kevin Smith and his group of friends wrote/produced MotU:R and that got Daniel really interested Critics loved it. Fans hated it. We can't really explain these reasons without spoiling the show, but it's worth the discussion. Melvin wasn't totally on-board with MotU:R, but that's because he's growing tired of the "Reboot Template". Unpacking the controversial complicating incident for the season, and how not being invested in He-Man may be a benefit to the show. MotU:R raises the stakes and adds depth to its characters, something the original show never did. Daniel, on one reason critic reception can be so different than fan reception, "When you watch, like, 10 movies a week and you're watching all these shows, something that stands out is gonna really hit different." But, we're all guilty of going "back in my day!" with things we loved when growing up. Melvin, "Do you think it's, like, the comfortability of chasing identity that draws people in to be so angry about this stuff?"Sympathy for those who idolize things, acceptance that it's okay to not like things, but the importance of a reality check over what priorities take stock in our lives.Expanding on the "Reboot Template" and why Melvin is growing tired of it (Editor's Note: Melvin means Star Wars, not Star Trek: The Motion Picture, when talking about a movie shown in theaters, like, 7 years in a row)Are we interested in watching the rest of S1?Recommendations: Charles Hodge's 1 & 2 Corinthians: Geneva Commentary SeriesWrite a letter to someone important to you explaining why they're important to you, then call them and read it to them (Source for Inspiration)Amphibia (again, with new qualifiers) & What Remains of Edith FinchSupport on Patreon for Unique Perks! Social Links: Twitter Website Facebook Group CinematicDoctrine@gmail.com Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/CinematicDoctrine)

The Mandalorian was the most glorious thing to come out of the trainwreck that was 2020, and we will not argue about this. So it was only natural that we took some time to go deep geek on the final chapter that doubles as one of the greatest season finales in history with our good friend Jimmy Dice from Scruffy Looking Podcasters.Programming note... We recorded this episode the Sunday after Chapter 16 streamed and had planned to release it as two episodes the weeks before Christmas. As you can clearly see, that didn't happen, so feel free to chuckle at all the holiday references and enjoy this as our parting gift from 2020. LINKS OF INTEREST:- Here's the original SNL Five Timers club skit with Tom Hanks and others along with what appears to be a 12 year old Conan O'Brien- Here's the episode of Scruffy Looking Podcasters where they talked about (and laughed at) Tim's Mando theory- Here's the IMDB page of Peyton Reed in all its glory- Surprise surprise, Todd was wrong! The photo Katee Sackhoff posted of the bridge on her Instagram page wasn't Mark Hammill, but her dad.- However, he did redeem himself because yes indeed, the Dave Klein who was the director of photography on "The Tragedy" was the same guy who worked with Kevin Smith all the way back in 1994 on Clerks.- As always, be sure to check out Scruffy Looking Podcasters for all your Star Wars pod needs ...AND ANOTHER THING:Tim is pretty excited about his new desk from Vari and gives it a hearty thumbs up.Todd thinks the Nick Offerman yule log video is quality viewing for any time of year. FOLLOW US ON THE SOCIAL MEDIAS:Did you love what you listened to? After a brief absence for editing, I'm pleased to announce the return of the Yuletide special! Welcome back long-time listeners, and welcome to shiny new listeners who have come for this week’s wonderful guest, Simon Merrells! Simon is often known for his stellar turn as Marcus Crassus, the man who defeated Spartacus, and the titular character's antagonist in the hit tv show. Spartacus shot Merrells to international fame, and he has since put in turns on The Tomorrow People, Dominion, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ,12 Monkeys, and Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens!! Simon recently starred opposite Tom Cullen and MARK HAMMILL, yes, Luke Skywalker/the Joker himself,  as the Templar Knight, Tancrede, in History’s Knightfall, and shares a wee bit (as much as he's allowed to at any rate) about the forthcoming Lord of the Rings/Tolkien-based tv show!  His career spans more titles than I can fit into an intro, but I will mention that I met Simon when he was playing the lead in a short film I was working on called The Leap, a sci fi dystopia directed by Karel van Bellingen. It's a great film, and worth 20 mins of your time!  https://youtu.be/GoJb30Une-A We also cover some serious ground on Spartacus and Knightfall, and I have to say I was seriously impressed with Simon’s curiosity and knowledge on the ancient world. It highlights his dedication and focus not just as an actor but as a person of intelligence and insight. But he’s also a bloody good laugh so settle in for some history-spanning stories and behind the scenes frolics with my Yuletide special guest, Simon Merrells.   Thanks go out to Simon for his time, and The Leap family, we are overdue a reunion! Two years ago in a studio not far away.... J.J. "Jar-Jar" Abrams rebooted yet another franchise with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It's Disney's cynical ripoff of the original 1977 "Star Wars" plot, but it has a spherical R2-D2, an angsty, millennial Darth Vader with a slightly different lightsaber and a female Luke Skywalker. All of these decisions were unquestionably made in order to manipulate a whole new generation of children into begging their parents into purchasing a bunch of plastic toys made from earth-destroying chemicals (who needs the Death Star?). Daisy Ridley plays Rey, a character whose family abandoned her as a child on the desert planet of Jakku without even a last name. At the beginning of the movie, she's selling space junk for scraps of bread, but, by the end of the movie, she's inexplicably beating up a 6'2" lifelong warrior who knows all kinds of Dark Side tricks and was trained as a Jedi Knight by Luke Skywalker himself. Adam Driver plays Kylo Ren — Han Solo and Princess Leia's tantrum-throwing, Darth Vader wannabe of a son. He has somehow managed to become a high-ranking official in an evil interstellar organization known as The First Order, despite the fact that he demonstrates total incompetence in everything he does. John Boyega plays Finn, a Stormtrooper who defects from The First Order after he is asked to massacre a village on his first mission. This was actually an interesting introduction to this new character, but the movie never even slightly develops him and instead merely makes him Rey's sidekick and occasional cheesy comic relief. Oscar Issac, the highly-accomplished, Juilliard-trained actor who should have been nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Ex Machina," plays Poe Dameron, a happy-go-lucky resistance fighter pilot who spends most of his screen time making bad quips while flying around and blowing stuff up.  Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hammill, Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels play old Han Solo, old Princess Leia, old Luke Skywalker, old Chewbacca and old C-3PO respectively. Join us as we wonder why the humans in this movie have either American, English or Scottish accents, what "force-sensitive" actually means, and whether the First Order's ships have toilets.  Tell us what you think by chatting with us (@filmsnuff) on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, or by shooting us an email over at mailbag@filmsnuff.com. Disney's 2021 Slate And Born In China

The Disney Movie Review

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2017 71:22

This Week Cars 3 gets a full trailer and it looks like a return to form for the Franchise. Disney releases its entire slate of films through 2021 and refuses to name some movies that really should have names. Plus we talk Born in China and how Beauty and the Beast beat Star Wars…That and much much, more. For the Week of May 1, this is Episode 129 of The Disney Movie Review   Sorry for the long intro this week, but I wanted to let you know that I will be accepting advertisers for the show. (If you listen to the show and want to promote your business, you'll be able to buy time for a discount!). That being said, I can promise you three things. 1.) I will always let you know when I am promoting an ad. 2.) I will do my best to use the money to improve the show. 3.) I will do my best to not waste your time.   CARS 3 Trailer Pixar released the first full trailer for Cars 3 this week. Take a look at the trailer here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LeOH9AGJQM). This appears to be a return to form for the franchise. It is apparent that it is following the “redemption story” format a little closer than the second one did. Owen Wilson is returning as Lightning McQueen and we get our first real look at Cristela Alonzo as Cruz Ramirez. This trailer also confirms that Larry the Cable Guy will be back to voice Tow Mater. Ed brought up a good point that it is rather late in the season for us to get our first real trailer for Cars 3, since the release is slated for June 16. That said, I personally don't have a huge need to see more of this film. I just hope it is better than Cars 2.   Walt Disney Studios Release Calendar Disney released its movie calendar through 2021, instantly causing a lot of speculation from fans. You can see the full slate thanks to Deadline.com here(https://pmcdeadline2.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/disney-release-calendar-wm.pdf). It's interesting to note that Disney stayed away from any December releases in 2020. That is when Jame Cameron's sequel to Avatar - a.k.a. The biggest movie of all time - is expected to drop. I don't think Disney is necessarily afraid of Cameron as much as they are working to protect and advertise for the World of Pandora in Animal Kingdom. It doesn't make sense to undercut the parks side of the business just to prove how popular Star Wars or Marvel is.   It's also interesting to note that Disney did not name the Avengers film nor the DisneyToon Studios film in 2019. We've known both of these movies are coming since 2015, so they aren't a surprise. I suppose they might be waiting to do a big reveal at D23 in July, but it seems a little odd. This is especially true for the Avengers film, which we know is part 2 of Avengers: Infinity War. Maybe they just have a snazzy title for it.   Finally, we have a release date for Frozen 2!! November 27, 2019, Anna, Elsa, and the whole gang will be back for another adventure in Arendell. I can't lie, I'm excited for this one. There is a reason Frozen took the world by storm and I still count it in my top 5 of Disney's animated films. I'm not sure it will recapture the magic of the first one, but if it even comes close it will be something I can't let go. The full slate can be found at the end of this article.   BORN IN CHINA REVIEW I haven't seen Born in China yet, but Ed gives a great review on the show and on his site, DisneyMovieDatabase.com. (https://www.disneymoviedatabase.com/copy-of-monkey-kingdom) Overall he gave it an 8 out of 10, saying that the movie is “looks magnificent” with compelling writing. The producers spent more than one year making the film and went through a lot of pain to capture footage we've never seen before. For example, this is the first time you will ever see Snow Leopard cubs in the wild on camera. DisneyNature caught that . Read more about what it took to make the movie here.
