In big news in India's vaccination drive, the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) recommended to the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to grant emergency use authorisation for Bharat Biotech's Covaxin for children as young as two years. On 12 October, the expert panel in a statement said that “after detailed deliberation, the committee recommended for grant of market authorisation of the vaccine for the age group of 2 to 17 years for restricted use in an emergency.” This announcement makes Covaxin the second vaccine after Zydus Cadila's ZyCoV-D DNA based vaccine, to be approved for vaccinating those under the age of 18, and the first vaccine in the world to be approved for children below the age of 12. Though DCGI has not given the formal nod yet, the lack of publicly available data regarding the clinical trials and the fact that Covaxin has still not been approved by the World Health Organisation has raised some concerns with health experts on how effective the vaccine will be on children. What also does not help Bharat Biotech's case is its previous lack of transparency about the conduct of Covaxin clinical trials in adults and how it reported adverse side effects. And this brings up the pertinent questions on every parents mind-how safe is Covaxin for children? How many doses should be administered? And do children already affected with COVID-19 need the vaccine? Davis Cup Sunday - Murray, Hewitt Set Up GB vs. Australia Semifinal Showdown; Leon Smith interview   Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith told The Tennis Podcast that Andy Murray is ‘a phenomenal competitive animal’ after he carried the nation to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas semifinals for the first time since 1981.   Smith joined Tennis Podcast presenters David Law and Catherine Whitaker to reflect upon a tie that Britain won 3-1 against France. It set up a final four meeting with Australia, 18-20 September.    “I’ve been trying to come up with the right words to describe Andy, but he is just a phenomenal competitive animal. James Waterson reports the news from last weekend’s Davis Cup results. Rafael Nadal and Spain cruised to a 4-1 win against France, while Argentina beat Serbia in Belgrade 3-2. Nadal dominated both of his singles matches, while Novak Djokovic had to retire in the fourth rubber against Juan Martin del Potro because of a back injury he picked up during the US Open. Meanwhile, Stanislas Wawrinka beat Lleyton Hewitt in five sets to clinch Switzerland’s return to the World Group, while Kei Nishikori helped Japan re-enter the top tier for the first time since 1985. Finally, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal have been vocal critics of the tournament schedule lately, and that dispute may come to a head when the players meet next month.
