It is that ability to say the things you want to say out loud that allows you to show up and ultimately make an impact. –Alexia Vernon Do you speak up for yourself? For issues that matter to you?  I'm talking with Alexia Vernon, a speaking coach, and we've talked before, but this conversation is a little different. We're talking about being able to walk into any conversation and unapologetically speak up for yourself and any ideas or issues that matter to you. One thing I've noticed is that sometimes this ability seems selective. We can advocate for our kids, but struggle to advocate for ourselves at work. Or you can speak up for your business, but feel like you've lost your voice in your marriage. We talk about the why behind this and how to find your voice in any situation. We talk about layers to address: stories about speaking up and how they feel in your body, messaging and practicing what you're going to say, presence or using our bodies, and calling people to action. We talk about:  The difference between ruminating and practicing what you will say The missing piece when you have a conversation but nothing changes Asking yourself where you are feeling constriction when you want to speak up and using breathing or visualization to bring a sense of safety and release to help open those spaces Using pleasure points instead of pain points to move people to action (in business and personal situations) Setting boundaries clearly and having a shared vocabulary when working with a team or clients Not waiting until the top emotion is anger or resentment to have a conversation BIO Alexia Vernon is a sought-after advisor to executives, senior leadership teams, entrepreneurs, coaches, and consultants who want to speak with an unshakeable presence, sell their ideas, navigate daring conversations, develop high performing teams, advance their thought leadership, and make a lasting positive social impact. Alexia has supported thousands of leaders and speakers through her Step into Your Moxie® corporate offerings, online training, live events, mastermind, and certification programs. LINKS https://stepintoyourmoxie.com/ (https://stepintoyourmoxie.com/) https://plansimple.com/more-please-with-alexia-vernon/ (More Please with Alexia Vernon) Doable Changes from this episode: NOTICE CONSTRICTION. When you feel yourself struggle to speak up, try to notice where in your body you feel it. Is it in your knees, your thighs, your belly, your throat? Start by noticing. Then see if you can release using breathing or meditation. PRACTICE WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY. When we are passionate about something, we think we'll be able to just riff off the top of our heads and say the important things that move people to action. But without practice, we often miss the mark. You don't have to write out and memorize a speech, but think through what you want to say. Practice saying it. CENTER THE OTHER PERSON. Think about what you want from the conversation: what change do you want, what do you want the other person to do? What do they need? What is their motivator? Can you lead with that?

In the inaugural episode of Moxielicious® season 4, I talk about how to find a signature system that allows you to grow your movement as a coach, consultant, business or thought leader. As I share near the top of the episode, the movement that my work as a speaking coach is all about is “speaking up.” More specifically, I want Step into Your Moxie® to be the go-to system for people ready to cultivate the mindset and skillset to be able to walk into any room, into any conversation, and onto any stage able to speak up for themselves, the ideas and issues that matter to them (and to their companies), and when they speak, call people to action. The funny thing I've noticed about myself, most of my clients, and certainly a lot of the business, activist, and even educational leaders I've had the privilege of working with over the years is that while they (we!) love talking about the “nature” of our work, we are often lousy at naming our approach to it. We've been so socialized not to talk about how we do what we do, or to talk about features and benefits, that so much (too much!) of what we do has become rooted in instinct. We aren't able to talk about the signature system or paradigm underpinning what we do. Signature systems sell our work to prospective clients – and they facilitate transformation for the people we work with. You need one. It can be yours. It can be somebody else's. That's up to you – as I discuss in this episode. Whichever decision you make, be sure your signature system connects to your movement. And if you want to grow your movement as a business or thought leader, keep coming back to Moxielicious®. Because throughout season 4, I'm talking to amazing guests growing super specific, inspiring movements. The more authentic you are when relaying your message, the more you connect with your audience, and the more resonant your message becomes. Today, we discuss how to incorporate masterful storytelling in your talks. We address: Increasing your confidence as a speaker, even if you're an introvert Becoming unafraid to embrace and be bold with your speaking style and message Keeping your brand the anchor for all your professional endeavors Focusing your talks on the one core message that defines your brand identity Today, Karen sits down with “Moxie Maven” Alexia Vernon, a Las Vegas-based keynote speaker and sought-after speaking, sales, leadership, and executive coach and trainer to executives, teams, entrepreneurs, and emerging leaders. Alexia has supported thousands of leaders and speakers through her Step into Your Moxie® corporate offerings, online training, live events, The Spotlight Speaker Accelerator coaching program, and her masterminds. Listen in as Alexia discusses how focusing 100% on your message and speaking as if to just one person in the crowd automatically eliminates your self-defeating self-talk. She then explains that you should keep your core message on-brand; that is, to have your signature talk embody your message as a thought leader. These, Alexia explains, are the most important elements that make up a one-of-a-kind, in-demand speaker. 3 MAJOR POINTS DISCUSSED Your “why” has to be greater than your fear. Even as a natural introvert who never, ever imagined that she would one day become a sought-after speaker, Alexia won America's Junior Miss at 19-years-old simply because she was motivated to do just about anything for scholarship money. “In those moments where you feel deeply uncomfortable,” says Alexia, “a piece of it is certainly learning how to be in your body and not try to escape that discomfort.” To do that, desire must override reluctance. Embrace your unique speaking style and message. All speakers, at some point, have to overcome the temptation to sanitize or “dumb down” their message to appeal to everyone in the audience. This is especially tough for many women, who have a tendency to hold back or be apologetic when speaking in front of crowds. Both Karen and Alexia make the case that, to become the best and most respected speaker you can be, you have to embrace and be bold with your message, warts and all. Embody your message as a thought leader. In the TED world, this is called an “idea worth spreading”. What is the core idea you want to be known for? Then—once you've defined that message—how can you make sure that your signature talk forwards that idea? Is that signature talk moving people into individual or group programs that support that idea? As hard as it will be at times, keep it focused; otherwise, you'll exhaust yourself from going in too many different directions. Ginkgo specializes in boosting visibility for underrepresented or marginalized authors, experts, and entrepreneurs through comprehensive communication and media relations efforts. As a Taiwanese-Black American woman, Cher is passionate about leveraging the power of media to tell diverse stories through online, print, TV, radio, and podcast mediums so she can play a role in reshaping how our society views social justice, give-back initiatives, feminism, and multiculturalism. Cher and I first met over a decade ago when I was her women’s studies professor! As I share in the episode, I was absolutely blown away by her critical thinking and fierce work ethic. I loved her passion for social justice and after our class concluded, I invited her to be my intern and support the launch of my first book. Cher and I have stayed in one another’s lives ever since. She’s supported my women’s leadership programs. Planned my baby shower! I recently hired her company to lead publicity for my Step into Your Moxie book launch. It felt very appropriate to invite Cher onto Moxielicious to close-out the season with a conversation about how to amplify the voices of folx who are Black, Indigenous, or non-Black People of Color (BIPOC). Whether you are a minority or (emerging) thought leader, or you are white and want to use your power and privilege to #SharetheMic, I think you’re going to love Cher’s awesome and actionable recommendations and soul-expanding storytelling. Infidelity - Overcome the Devastation- My Story- with special guest host, Alexia Vernon, author of Step into Your Moxie.25-70% of Americans have had an extramarital affair. And the reason that infidelity statistics are so difficult to get a handle on, is because the data is gathered from self-reported surveys, and most people don’t admit engaging in infidelity. Because it’s taboo. Because it’s scary to think it could happen to us.There is a lot of misunderstanding and judgment around those who are unfaithful, the betrayed partner, what happens in a relationship after the affair (or affairs) have ended, and how to healthily go forward. To make matters worse, pop culture’s version of what it’s like to have, or be the victim of, an affair is shockingly incorrect, meaning that well-meaning friends or family sometime only make matters worse – not better. In addition, there are surprisingly few quality resources out there for a problem that, while very complex, is exceedingly common. The devastation of my infidelity experience was beyond what I thought I could endure. It is not something I will ever get over, nor will a day ever go by where I don’t think about its impact on me, my children, family and friends and be consumed – at least for a moment – by the crushing pain. But the woman I have become throughout this journey is not someone I would trade for all the world.Affairs happen for many different reasons, across all social-economic classes, all religious backgrounds, all political affiliations, and all cultures. Chances are very good that if you have not yet been touched by infidelity, you will be. It is my wish to be a beacon of compassion, to open up difficult conversations around infidelity and its impact on everyone, not just those who are involved. My wish for you, is that no matter what happens, or has happened in your live, that you will be able to untangle yourself and your worth from the actions and choices of others. That you can find peace and understanding in all situations, and even though something is unfair or unjust, you will know deep inside, that who you are, right now, is more than enough.Download your Bundle of JOY gift pack, designed to help you tap into your smart, sexy, and spiritual self today at www.loracheadle.com. Are you my Moxielicious podcast listener?  If you are a coach, consultant or business leader who wants to unapologetically speak up for yourself, your company, and the ideas and issues that matter most to you, then the answer is YES! This podcast is also designed for industry leaders (like you?) who have been called to develop the voices of their people – but who know they need to dial-up their own voices…. right alongside them. In this inaugural episode, I talk about moxie’s origin as a “medicine,” invented by Dr. Augustin Thompson in the 1870s, which was designed to give consumers vigor, pep, bravery and courage. (While it was more soda than medicine, as you’ll hear, the history is still fascinating.) My own journey to stepping into my moxie and being Moxielicious hasn’t been smooth. It took me a painfully long time to speak up for myself consistently. My outer voice was squeaky, even on the good days, as I detail. Later in this episode, I tell a story about being a keynote speaker at a conference a decade ago and having a lightbulb moment that led to the launch of the Step into Your Moxie® brand.  Plus, I give the highlights on what listeners like you can look forward to in the first season of Moxielicious.  In This Episode:  What is moxie? [ 2:00 ]  About my journey to moxie [ 3:25 ] How being the closing keynote speaker at a PitchFest sparked the idea for the Step into Your Moxie® brand [ 8:55 ] Why being Moxielicious is a process and not a final destination [ 14:30 ] Moxielicious Quotes:  “Who do I want to be by the time I get married?” “I used to hate it when other women shared their stories or successes.” “If we crave it, we can create it.” “Being moxielicious is an unapologetic and deeply self-compassionate approach to how I speak to myself and to others that allows me to feel like I’m the protagonist of my life.”   Links Mentioned:  If you are a coach, consultant or business leader who wants to be amplifying your speaking and thought leadership, let’s continue the conversation in my Facebook Group - the Spotlight Speakers Salon.   Curious how we can jam together to amplify your speaking, create game-changing speaking content, and advance your thought leadership? Feminine Power Time with Christine Arylo

What does embodied power look, sound and feel like in a woman who is expressing as her whole and true self?  What does it look, feel and sound like in you? In your presence? In your voice, spoken or written? In how you are received and perceived by others?  How do you access your truth, your voice and use it to amplify your visibility, influence, and presence in the world… in a way that is true to your expression, your authentic self? The models for what power looks like in a person, what it sounds like, what people respond to, are distorted. So we as women and the women before us have to distort and contort ourselves to get a seat at the table, be taken seriously, have our voices heard, or take on the qualities of men or intellectual machines without heart. That time is over. No more contorting, distorting our presence to fit in. And also no more having to scream to be heard, be serious to be taken seriously, and suppressing our femininity in how we dress, speak and show up. Today I invite you to explore within yourself the ways in which if you knew how to more powerfully wield your voice and presence, you would create more of the reality you desire for yourself, the world and what matters to you. Whether that is in your relationships, your career, your message, your business, HOW you show up and the presence you are in it, matters big time. But how we’ve been taught to use that voice, to show up to get what we need and be heard isn’t working for us as women. So today, in this episode of Feminine Power Time, PRESENCE: Women with a Voice, #2 of 3 in our Re-Imagining Feminine Power series, I invite you to join me, Christine Arylo, women’s leadership advisor and catalyst, and special guest Alexia Vernon, author of Step into Your Moxie, for a session that will touch your heart, open your voice, and inspire you to expand in your expression in this world this year. We dive into: The history of what women have had to do to be heard or be taken seriously – thank you so much! And it’s our turn to do it differently. Why women are not taken seriously or heard – and men are often listened to over women Revealing what you do when you feel confident or insecure when speaking – are you a bunny, a bull, a cheetah or a owl? And how you may be sabotaging yourself? Reclaim what leadership is – and why we must do this as women to have the influence we desire in the world. How to have your full range of emotion and also be a powerful catalyst for change and elevation not more separation Difference between trying to BE something, and being who you are – and how to tell the difference Is what you look like on the outside reflecting who you are on the inside? What happens when you move from your focus from trying to inform and get other people to understand and to shifting to focusing on connection? Where your feminine power and voice lives in your body – and why spanx, bellies and flat abs are short circuiting our power How do you find and express your natural communication super power? Here are some of the wisdom bytes from the show followed by how to connect with Alexia, including her book Step into Your Moxie – and also upcoming retreats with Christine Arylo.   WISDOM BYTES:   Leadership is not bestowed vs. leadership is embodied and chosen.   Embrace your leadership power, do not try to “own” your power. Confidence comes from stopping to grip your body and let your body do what it knows how to do to connect with others and move the energy. It intuitively knows when to stay still, we know when to move.   Your power comes from your presence, not your position.   If you know what your core essences are, then you can be who you are truly are.   If you don’t know who you are in your core, you will contort yourself to fit in.   As women who want to have more impact in the world. we have to harness our storytelling power. We are being called to speak more clearly, authentically to be a vessel for the divine to come through.  Speak from compassion without censoring what you have to say.   *** WISDOM INQUIRY FOR YOU: What are you going to embody more of this year to more powerfully express your presence and voice? What is wanting to come through you more this year? Make this year part of exploring this next season or elevation of your expression. What do you need to embody that is already in you? What from your past, needs to integrate into who you are now? Have an exploration. Play with how you dress, speak, write.   ***** MORE ON ALEXIA VERNON Get Alexia Vernon's Book - great wisdom, fun, stories, and potent power. Alexia Vernon is a transformational speaker and leadership coach for women who is also author of the book Step Into Your Moxie. She says, "Whether I am keynoting a conference, leading a Spotlight speaker coaching program or delivering my Step into Your Moxie® curriculum onsite at an organization, my work is showing entrepreneurs, business leaders, consultants and change makers how to fall (back) in love with their voices, unapologetically speak up and out on stages." But getting to this point of teaching women how to use their own voices was a journey for Alexia -- because she had to learn how to fall in love with her own first, which wasn't always easy. On this episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Alexia shares important insight on how you can fall in love with your voice, create a message that's unique to you and learn how to make speaking a part of your business.

Welcome back to another episode of She Rises! Today, Giovanna Capozza talks with Alexia Vernon. Alexia is a speaking and leadership coach and author of the book Step into Your Moxie: Amplify Your Voice, Visibility, and Influence in the World. Alexia has committed her life to show women how to “step into their moxie®” and has delivered transformational keynotes and corporate training for Fortune 500 companies, college campuses, professional associations, the United Nations, and delivered a TEDx talk on the future of feminism. Alexia understands what it’s like to be terrified to speak and shares practical ways to shift this fear. She discusses her own experiences of using her voice and what it means to connect with others in a way that inspires change. Alexia presents a soul-stirring call to action for women to speak up for themselves, their ideas, and the issues that matter most to them.        Alexia gives a glimpse into her struggle with finding her own voice.   Alexia shares how she learned to shift fear and step into greatness. Alexia explains the benefits of role-playing and preparing for public speaking. Giovanna talks about the differences between being prepared and winging it. Alexia discusses why visibility is a responsibility and not just an opportunity. Alexia explains how visibility helps us connect with others more, even if you don’t have a huge platform. Alexia shares how she cultivates her own voice and message. Alexia discusses the difference in focusing on the source of an issue instead of the symptoms. Alexia talks about point of view and how to hone in on what message you want to share. If you’re not a little disruptive, you’re not helping others have a profound shift in their life. Alexia explains compassionate confidence and unapologetically speaking your truth. Giovanna and Alexia emphasize the need for responsible communication. If what you choose to speak about aligns with your values, and you’d be out of integrity by playing it safe and small, be ready to rise through discomfort and rise into leadership.   Memorable Quotes: Learn to be with discomfort. Use meditation and powerful visualizations to enjoy and be grateful for experiences that make you nervous. When a lot of people saying something similar, it’s a sign that the world needs that message.     Would you rather be liked or would you prefer to have impact? When we are in our truth, those who really need us will raise their hands and those in our communities will show up more powerfully.   We are fortunate that we can have a voice and that we can step out and speak up.     Resources Mentioned: Alexia Vernon’s Website Alexia’s Book: Step into Your Moxie

Moxie For Self TransformationAlexia Vernon - In this age of women's empowerment, as ever increasing numbers of women are finding their voices and daring to take a stand for themselves and their causes. The publication of  https://amzn.to/2TcQqKZ (Step Into Your Moxie: Amplify Your Voice, Visibility, and Influence in the World ) (New World Library, October 16, 2018), by speaking and leadership coach Alexia Vernon, couldn't be more perfectly timed. Through her coaching and training programs and extensive speaking engagements, Alexia was dubbed a “Moxie Maven” by the Obama White House Office of Public Engagement for her robust approach to empowering women. She has helped tens of thousands of individuals speak with power and impact at work and in business, with their friends and family, onstage, on camera, and above all, to themselves. In https://amzn.to/2TcQqKZ (Step into Your Moxie), she distills the communication discoveries she has made throughout her dynamic career into simple, effective, and practical recommendations women can use to experience deep and lasting transformation in all facets of their communication. You'll love her - she's on it with helpful, practical insights! Photo by https://unsplash.com/photos/flEStjHTY14?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText (Leio McLaren (@leiomclaren)) on https://unsplash.com/search/photos/courage?utm_source=unsplash&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=creditCopyText (Unsplash) She Sets A Moxie Example"Moxie is a mindset, heart set, and skill set that you can develop because I was most definitely not born with it. During the first quarter of my life, I experienced an on-again-off-again relationship — with my voice. One moment I felt like I was tap-dancing on eggshells, striving to be liked, give the right answers, and not be called out for failing to be enough of whatever I conjectured other people wanted me to be. Then at other times, often close to those former times, I had an insufferable need to be recognized and praised for my achievements. I knew I was born to make a significant, positive impact on the world, but only later I learned how to redirect away from thinking about what other people were thinking of me. Now my thoughts drive directly to the objective - the impact that I want to make. In the past most of the time when I spoke my voice quavered, I used diminishing words and body language, and my speaking did not move people to take action." Why Moxie Now?"While shopping Step into Your Moxie to publishers, some of the feedback I received was, 'I'm not sure women's empowerment or citizens' marches and protests will still be a thing by the time the book comes out.' Then, while writing the book, #MeToo and #TimesUp happened, millions of Americans continued to march on behalf of #BlackLivesMatter, #MarchForOurLives, and #KeepFamiliesTogether, and the world changed. However, while women have marched and spoken up and out on behalf of themselves and others, it's one thing to go to a rally or broadcast your views in an angry (or empowering) social media post. It's an altogether different thing to tell yourself, and believe, that you possess the power and ability to advocate for yourself — especially if you are in an environment, professionally or personally, in which the people around you are complicit in maintaining the status quo. Media outlets such as CNN, PBS, and Inc. predicted that 2018 would be 'the year of the woman,' but how many of us really feel like we have the moxie we need to consistently speak up, tell our truth, and create the future we want for ourselves and our loved ones? In Step into Your Moxie, I give women a pathway to cultivate their power so they can use it to speak up for themselves and the issues and causes that matter most to them. As I say in the book when you step into your moxie, it is an act of divine service to yourself—and also to the world."...

Have you ever felt like you were tap dancing on eggshells - striving to be liked, give the right answers, and not be called out for failing to be enough of whoever others wanted you to be? My hunch is, even if you answered yes, you may also have experienced a competing desire - to put yourself and your ideas out into the world in a big way. You know you were put here to say big things. To do big things. You want to be seen, you want to make impact, and that often feels scary. One of my biz besties, Alexia Vernon, knows this tension firsthand. Even as she built a successful career as a professional speaker and speaking coach, she experienced an on-again, off-again relationship… with her own voice. … despite presenting transformational keynotes and corporate trainings for Fortune 500 companies, speaking at the United Nations, delivering a TEDx talk, and being featured on CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS, Forbes.com, and tons more. I met Queirra in Vegas, but it’s not as shady as that may sound… Queirra and I met at a public speaking training for women leaders.  I think we were meant to meet, because we were the two winners of an online speaking contest (and I never join contests!) to attend this event with one of my mentor-friends (and a former podcast guest), Alexia Vernon. About a year ago I entered an online contest, something that I’d never done before.  I’m not really one for playing the lottery or “entering to win,” but this one spoke to me.  It was a challenge to do 5 livestream videos, each one sharing a different part of my life story in a vulnerable, honest, and “naked” way.
