POPULARITY
Rational thinking might drive economics, but emotional behavior drives decisions. And no one understands that better than Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational, a book that's reshaped our assumptions about how people make decisions. In this episode, we're unpacking key lessons from Dan Ariely's work with the help of our special guest, Leslie Alore, SVP of Marketing at Flexera.Together, we explore what B2B marketers can learn from setting the right expectations, why fewer choices close more deals, and how the power of “free” and fear of loss can drive serious retention.About our guest, Leslie AloreAs the SVP of Marketing, Leslie Alore leads Flexera's marketing strategy with an aim to create great experiences and outcomes for our customers. Her passion for people and technology—combined with more than 15 years of marketing leadership in the tech space—has established her as a successful, results-driven executive who enables teams to do their best work.Prior to joining Flexera, Leslie served as the Global SVP of Lifecycle Marketing at Ivanti. Before that, she held various marketing, operations and GTM strategy roles at Iron Mountain. Leslie is an active speaker and mentor in the GTM community, and has been recognized among “Top Women in Marketing” by Ragan Communications and “Women of the Channel” by CRN.Leslie holds a BBA in Management, and an MBA with a concentration in Strategic Leadership from Walsh College of Accountancy and Business Administration. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Predictably Irrational:Set expectations to shape reality. Great marketing doesn't just reflect value, it creates the conditions for it. Leslie highlights how expectations shape reality. When buyers believe something is good, they interpret every detail through that lens. This isn't about manipulation, it's about clarity and consistency. Leslie says, “The effect of expectations… believing beforehand something is good, therefore it will be or the reverse.” So stop hoping your audience connects the dots. Tell them what to expect, then deliver on it. Perception isn't a bonus, it's the foundation.Shrink your options to speed the decision. Too many options stall progress. The paradox of choice tells us more isn't better, it's paralyzing. Leslie urges marketers to curate the path forward: “You actually want to give people fewer options and take control of the options that they see.” Don't just join the shortlist, define it. When you narrow the frame, you speed up the decision for your customers. Turn “free” into staying power with loss aversion. There's magic in “free,” but the real power lies in what people fear losing. Once someone uses your product, whether it's a freemium tool or an ungated resource, they've invested. Now there's skin in the game. Leslie puts it simply, “People will overvalue something that's free and ignore kind of the trade-off costs associated. And loss is psychologically painful. We don't want to lose that, which we already have.” Whether you offer software, content, or services, create early wins. Then make the cost of leaving feel higher than the cost of staying.Quotes*“ There's many organizations that lean into that power of positivity…What's very interesting is that consumer brands do this a lot very, very well. B2B organizations tend to do almost the opposite. They tend to lean more into FUD. And that's a harder road to tread.”*“ If you're an organization that is selling software, the software is designed to provide a business outcome. It's designed to solve a business problem. Instead of focusing on, here's the business problem. Doesn't that suck for you? You can say, ‘here's the solution.*“You have the power, you can feel confident about your ability to achieve X, Y, Z because you've solved this problem.' It's saying the same thing, but orienting it in a positive way and being very, very, very consistent in that message. Beat that drum over and over and over again.”*“ Narrow down the competitive options for them. Your sales process will move faster. You will be able to take better control of the narrative if you say, ‘this is us and these are the two other vendors that look like us. And here's why we are different and better, and here's what you can expect from these guys.' And that doesn't mean saying negative things about them. It's just highlighting your strengths and your virtues.”*“People are willing to accept trade-offs for something that is perceived to be free…This is the exact reason that PLG, product-led growth, is so powerful. Because if you can get people in the door with some sort of freemium offering, people will actually work harder to do the legwork to get a free product to work and interact with it, than they might be willing to put in for something that they have to go pay for. And then once they have it and they've put in the work, they don't wanna lose it.”Time Stamps[00:55] Meet Leslie Alore, SVP of Marketing at Flexera[00:56] Why Predictably Irrational?[02:20] The Role of SVP of Marketing at Flexera[02:47] Understanding Predictably Irrational[09:56] B2B Marketing Lessons from Predictably Irrational[37:49] Cognitive Dissonance in Buying Behavior[42:17] Emotional Marketing in B2B[46:18] Final Thoughts and TakeawaysLinksConnect with Leslie on LinkedInLearn more about FlexeraAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Brandon Blewett, author of the best-seller How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes, just released his witty and insightful take on navigating both literal and professional journeys. While the book hilariously examines the “6 Habits of Highly Annoying Travelers,” it also draws compelling parallels to the workplace—outlining how dealing with delays, turbulence, and pivots helped shape his career. Key talking points Brandon discusses: Knowing when to admit a role, path, or environment isn't the right fit—and finding the courage to move forward. Identifying and fostering mentoring relationships that unlock doors and inspire growth. How mentoring others can organically lead to opportunities. Discovering what truly makes you tick to chart a fulfilling career path. For context, the book has been praised as: "Drawing on his experience as both a seasoned road warrior and M&A executive, Brandon C. Blewett offers a hilariously relatable take on the habits of fellow travelers, transforming the chaos of air travel into a masterclass on navigating personal and professional growth." - Gary Leff, View from the Wing founder and Travel Guru "A rollicking tale from the ultimate frequent flyer. Travel has never been this funny. Do yourself a favor: pack this book in your carry-on." - Bill Keenan, Author of Discussion Materials "How many times have you wanted to turn to the plane seatmate next to you, behind you or across the aisle and say exactly what's on the tip of your tongue? Brandon does it, through a combination of comedy and astute observation... I never thought a guy with a background in mergers and acquisitions could be so funny. I stand corrected." - Greg Schwem, Author of Text Me If You're Breathing, The Road to Success Goes Through the Salar Bar, and Turning Gut Punches into Punchlines Website: brandonblewett.com Book: https://amzn.to/4hyTewR LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandoncblewett/ X: https://x.com/brandonintheair Travel Experiences and Professional Development Michael and Brandon had a conversation about their experiences with travel and how it relates to their professional and personal lives. Brandon, the author of "How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes," shared his background in frequent travel and his career in consulting and mergers and acquisitions. Michael, who has also traveled extensively, discussed his observations of people's interactions in airports and how these experiences can be compared to the challenges faced in daily life and career. They both agreed that adaptability and flexibility are essential in both travel and professional development. The conversation ended with Michael suggesting that sometimes, one needs to look within to navigate through challenges. Reassessing Career Choices for Fulfillment Michael and Brandon discussed the importance of self-reflection and reassessing one's career choices. Brandon shared his experience of pivoting from tax law to management consulting, realizing that his initial career choice wasn't the best fit for his skill set. Michael, a former accountant, echoed Brandon's sentiments, expressing relief at leaving his accounting career behind. They both agreed that reassessing one's career path is crucial for personal growth and fulfillment. Networking and Mentoring in Careers Michael and Brandon discussed the importance of networking and mentoring in their careers. Brandon shared his experience of not attending a target school for graduate studies and how he relied on mentoring relationships to succeed. He mentioned his involvement in the Ole Miss Mba Mentoring program and how it helped his mentees achieve significant career milestones. Brandon also highlighted the potential for mentoring relationships to come full circle, with mentees potentially offering opportunities in the future. Michael shared his own experience of being a mentor through a program at Walsh College, emphasizing the value of such relationships. Mentoring and Human Aspect Consideration Michael shared his experience of mentoring a student, Brandon, who was going through a challenging time due to his wife's medical school in Chicago. Michael suggested that Brandon transfer to a business school in Chicago to save on rent and be closer to his wife. Brandon eventually followed this advice and graduated. Michael emphasized the importance of considering the human aspect in mentoring, beyond just career goals. He also mentioned that he didn't receive an invitation to continue mentoring Brandon, but he could still mentor in other areas. Student Athlete Experience and Football Brandon shared his experience as a student athlete at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he attended every home football game and participated in the school's Life after Ball program. He found it rewarding to help student athletes prepare for their future careers, whether in finance or consulting. He also expressed his excitement about SMU's successful football season, which he believes will attract more talented players. Michael agreed, noting that the ease of transferring in college football now aligns with the real world, where taking a year off before starting a new job is not necessary. Leadership, Discipline, and Surrounding Smart People Brandon and Michael discussed the importance of discipline, practice, and competition in achieving success. They highlighted the example of Shaquille O'Neal, who despite being a former athlete, has become a successful businessman. They emphasized the need for leaders to surround themselves with smart and honest people who can provide feedback, even when it's not wanted. They also touched on the importance of being receptive to feedback and advice from others, such as gate agents, pilots, and flight attendants, to navigate challenges like flight delays or cancellations. The conversation concluded with the idea that leaders should strive to be the best in their field and that they deserve the best in the world. Continuous Learning and Personal Growth Brandon and Michael discussed the importance of continuous learning and growth, with Michael emphasizing the value of small daily improvements. They also talked about the potential for personal and professional growth, with Michael suggesting that even a 1% improvement each day could lead to significant progress over time.

According to CBS Sports, "West Virginia coach Bob Huggins has resigned as Mountaineers men's basketball coach after he was arrested Friday night in Pittsburgh for driving under the influence of alcohol. Huggins, who informed the team of his impending resignation Saturday night, intends to retire. WVU president E. Gordon Gee and athletic director Wren Baker released a joint statement on Huggins: "We support his decision so that he can focus on his health and family. On behalf of West Virginia University, we share our appreciation for his service to our University, our community and our state. During his time as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach, Coach Huggins devoted himself to his players, to our student body, to our fans and alumni and to all West Virginians. His contributions will always be a part of our history. In the days ahead, we will focus on supporting the student-athletes in our men's basketball program and solidifying leadership for our program." Huggins, 69, is one of the biggest figures in college basketball with two Final Fours and more than four decades of coaching to his name. Until his ouster, he was the active leader in Division I wins (934) as his head-coaching career dated back to Walsh College in 1980. Huggins was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022, an achievement many in the basketball community considered long overdue, even in spite of Huggins never reaching the national championship game." During this mini episode, You, Me, and Your Top Three host and CGS Advisors CEO, Gregg Garrett, speaks with CGS Fellow, Tim McCabe. Tim has led through several major market disruptions and helped to manage the largest industrial bankruptcy on the planet. He speaks about lessons he learned from that crisis, discusses the impacts of the current crisis tied to COVID-19 and makes suggestions to today’s leaders. And you have to hear what he has to say about using the disruption as a test drive for your future. About Tim McCabe Tim began his career at General Motors (GM) and GMAC where he assisted with the spin-off of EDS and the creation of GM’s new information technology group. During this time, Tim was part of a small team responsible for a 10-year technology outsourcing deal to support GM’s North American business, which at the time was the largest IT outsourcing deal in the world. Ten years later, McCabe led the termination of the GM/EDS agreement as well as the creation and subsequent contracting of approximately $5B of services to help GM begin its digital transformation. Following his time at GM, Tim transitioned to Delphi, which had been created as a $30B parts supplier spin out from GM. At the launch of his time with Delphi, Tim and a team of leaders planned and executed the largest industrial reorganization on record. In his role as CIO, McCabe designed and delivered a total global transformation of all underlying technologies across more than 300 sites in 27 countries, separating out for either sale or winddown of almost $20B of revenue and the eventual IPO of the new Delphi. In his most recent role, Tim was a Managing Director in the KPMG Advisory Practice where he acted as a thought leader for the Chief Information Officer advisory group. During his almost five years with KPMG, McCabe had the opportunity to advise and counsel many C-Suite leaders as they looked for ways to improve their business outcomes by better leveraging technology, designing and executing digital transformations, restructuring their IT operating model, and reducing their legacy technology debt. Assisting organizations to transform, achieve greater shareholder value, and defend against competitive disruptions were the cornerstone of McCabe’s practice. McCabe keeps close to his passion for guiding technology entrepreneurs by advising early stage startups. McCabe holds a BA in Philosophy from Oakland University, an MSM from Walsh College, and an Information Management degree from GM University. Show Highlights 0:47 No one has been here before – facing the global pandemic together. 1:50 Tim McCabe – CGS Fellow (General Motors. Delphi. KPMG.) 4:11 Lessons from disruptions: 1) You must make sure there is clarity of purpose, 2) have a tight focus on just a few things, and 3) you must have purpose for yourself. 6:40 “If you’re not uncomfortable over the time of the disruption, then you aren’t doing the right things.” 8:19 The future is here now – you can’t go back to your pre-COVID world. (Tim’s blog posts) 11:40 Tips for leaders: Be observant for how people are behaving and reacting and thinking through what that will amount to in the coming months. 13:10 Tips for leaders: What we are experience now (rules and regulations) likely won’t change much. 14:39 Contact Tim at CGS Advisors (Tim.McCabe@cgsadvisors.com) for a virtual coffee or on LinkedIn. Michael Levitt has over a 25 years experience career in leadership, healthcare, finance and information technology, with a. focus on reducing and preventing burnout and stress in his current work. He has led community engagement, fund raising, and government engagement, which led to thousands of patients getting access to primary healthcare, reducing emergency room visits. Michael served on the Board of Directors for the Mississauga-Halton CCAC. Michael has the LEAN Health Care Yellow Belt designation through Ontario Hospital Association. Michael is also a graduate of Rotman Healthcare Advanced System Leadership program. Michael studied accounting and management at Walsh College. In 2010, he became a certified crisis intervention trainer, from Canadian Training Institute. That is to say, he's super smart, and very successful, with a great deal of experience in the Health space. What that doesn't say is the unbelievable journey and struggle he had along that way, including a series of worst-case scenarios many people would not come back from individually, let alone all together. And few would come back in such a strong way. But that's just it – Michael learned a tremendous amount that he's been able to bring together to save others from the same fate of a life so greatly impacted by burnout. I'm lucky enough to have gotten to know Michael as a friend over the years, and am honored to get to share his story with all of you in this episode. Key Points from the Episode with Michael Levitt: Michael works with teams and organizations on burnout recovery. He’d like to make it about burnout prevention, but usually it’s too late by the time he’s called in, so it’s about recovering and then putting in place tools to protect against recurrence. Michael’s personal story started before May of 2009 when the crux of his story happened. Before then, he was in a startup in the healthcare space, which was a new sector for him, meaning a lot of intense hours learning about the space and building the organization. He spent a couple of years living a very high-stress, low-health lifestyle, working too much, being too stressed, and eating really poorly (a lot of fast food) – a recipe for burnout. In May 2009, at only 40 years old, Michael suffered a heart attack in what’s known as the Widow Maker artery. That kicked off 369 days he refers to as his year of worst-case scenarios. After recovering from his heart attack for 17 weeks, he went back to a job he didn’t have. He handed the board his doctor’s note saying he could work again with no restrictions, and they handed him a note back that his services were no longer needed. This was in the Windsor-Ontario area, in the heart of the North American Auto Industry, which was in free-fall at the time. So not only did he lose his job, but the entire job market in the area had dried up. He expanded his search to places like Chicago, but still found nothing. He ended up finding a job in Toronto, meaning his family would need to relocate. He spent a few months commuting back and forth while his wife and kids wound things down in Windsor. On top of losing his job, he also was a cardiac patient without health insurance, so they had huge medical bills on top of the general living expenses, so they fell behind on bills. After six weeks, his 10-year-old daughter called crying that the bank had repossessed their family’s car. They were also getting their home ready to sell so they could move to Toronto fully. Once the family was in Toronto, Michael went back to Windsor to get any remaining items they had left behind, only to find a huge padlock on the house and note that the home was in foreclosure. Despite losing their house before they could sell it, Michael felt peaceful in that moment for the first time in a year (or more). He describes it as knowing that it’s done now. The chapter was closed. They had their new life in Toronto, and the last pieces of their old lives were gone. There was no other shoe to drop. Michael realized he had choices: Realize he survived everything and continue going on living, Play the victim and blame everyone else who had ‘done this to him’, or Look in the mirror to see who the common denominator in all of these situations (him) and see what needs to change. After his heart attack, his doctor told him he would be more in tune to his body and life then he ever was. In this moment is where he found that connection fully, and has held onto it going forward. He looked at all aspects of his life. Starting with all of his heart meds, he asked what he needed to do to make it so he didn’t need them. Everyone wants that One Thing solution, but it was a lot of things. He had to look to remove and prevent burnout through changes in diet, stress management, movement, etc. He also had to look at what was holding him back, and realized he’s a People Pleaser. There’s nothing wrong with pleasing people or wanting to help them, but you can’t do that to the extent where it’s harming you. Michael had learned that from his parents, and took it to such an extreme that he was impacting himself so dramatically that it all crashed down. Establishing boundaries on what to say yes to was the hardest and most impactful thing he did for himself. I asked Michael what I’ve been so curious about - did he need the wake up moment, or could he have gotten there without it, and he felt he really needed a swift kick to change, regardless of how hard it was to deal with. Sometimes, we are doing well, but aren’t actually happy or feeling fulfilled. Why? We should aim for fulfillment, and be honest when and where we don’t feel it. Then lean into it and ask what would fulfill us. Then go after it. Michael gives people an exercise to do that most groan about. Take a sheet of paper, draw a line down the middle, and write a list of things they really enjoy doing on one side – having their morning coffee, going to the beach, having lunch with a friend, etc. Then on the other side of the paper, write down the last time you did that thing. This is where people groan. What we realize is how rarely we are doing the things we really like. Then we look at why – and we often find excuses, or say we’re too busy. Many of these things aren’t so big that we can’t do them easily or flexibly (e.g. taking a big vacation takes lots of planning versus watching a show you like on TV, which is easy). So what are you doing in your day mindlessly that’s eating your time so you find it hard to do what you would rather be doing? What changes can you make to be more present and mindful in these decisions. Then schedule two of those things you like and don’t allow that time to get overwritten by anything else. It will feel uncomfortable for many of us, but once we do this, we start to see possibilities for fulfillment instead of reasons why we can’t be fulfilled. Michael also shared the need to look at our calendar and ensure we have some slack time, and make some tough calls about which meetings we don’t really need to attend. It may mean some uncomfortable moments when we tell someone we can’t make their meeting, yet doing so can be beneficial all around. The benefit for the people you may say “No” to is that you are more present in the meetings you’re in, which could include others with them. If you attend and are drained or distracted, that’s not serving them either. We talked about a strategy Michael heard of where you look at all the things you do, and see if there are two things you can stop doing. For Michael, he left two boards he was on. Hamsa Daher is a business leader who is passionate about people, process, and growth. She grew up in Baghdad, Iraq, moving to the U.S in 1991. Her first language is Arabic, and she speaks English and Spanish. Hamsa received her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Wayne State University and her MBA from Walsh College. After college, Hamsa worked for an immigration agency to help refugee and asylee populations assimilate into the US, learn English, and find employment. She then joined Walsh College as their first international student advisor where she helped recruit, admit and counsel over 400 international students over a period of 9 years. In her four years at Mango Languages, Hamsa recruited and mentored many employees, providing outstanding leadership. She was promoted to the COO/Integrator role in 2012 and helped lead Mango to its most successful year in 2014. Then she joined Small Giants where she’s helping to identify, connect & develop purpose-driven leaders. What you’ll learn about in this episode: The significance that education played in Hamsa’s young years growing up in Iraq, especially as she witnessed first-hand the landscape of that country during two different wars before coming to America How education remained a high priority even as her family adjusted to difficult times during her childhood in Iraq during the endless sounds of bombs and sirens, and the moments where she had to flee her home without sufficient provisions Ways that the experiences she had helping her younger siblings when she fled Iraq at the age of 12 and coming to America needing to learn English from scratch inspired her and gave her leadership skills Why she made the right decision by abandoning her plans for a medical career after graduating from Wayne State University when she left a job at the hospital and pursued an MBA from Walsh College How her experiences working in student support services in higher education and at an immigration center with refugees transformed her into a mentor and valuable resource for the community The way that she took advantage of an opportunity offered her at Mango Languages to recruit, mentor, and lead, taking the skills she had learned in life’s journey to a higher level How her previous experiences made her an excellent fit at Small Giants as part of a community that inspired companies to be great rather than big Her role in cultivating purpose-driven leaders as Small Giants who focus on their people, community, and customers over profit How they use sessions, interactive workshops, and cultural stories to provide business experiences and relationship building within the community Ways that great leadership opportunities may start during small conversations while walking to dinner Ways to contact Hamsa: Website: www.smallgiants.org Twitter: @HamsaSYD LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/hamsadaher

We'll be hosting a webinar about online lead generation once a week! Reserve your free seat to discover the secret to online lead generation at LeadPropeller.com/webinar! Joni Yates Joni has an extensive career in administration working with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses alike. Her career has spanned sectors including retail, automotive, and the legal field. She has been working with Quickbooks for 7 years. Joni has helped several companies start their Quickbooks bookkeeping accounts from the ground up. Joni holds a Bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Rochester College. Kirk Yates Kirk has worked for Fortune 500 companies and run small businesses. His expertise includes sales management, the automotive aftermarket, mortgages, and banking. He first worked with Quickbooks in 2001 and prior to that worked with Peachtree Accounting software. Kirk is skilled in P&L and financial projections. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Advertising from Bradley University and a MBA from Walsh College. Joni and Kirk live in Rochester Hills, MI with their two children. Together they have owned rental properties and know all too well, the ups and downs of being landlords. Together, Joni and Kirk got in to bookkeeping for real estate investors when Joni did consulting work for Mike Simmons and his partner. When they were looking over the books, Joni and Kirk noticed that there was a hole in market because there weren't many people doing bookkeeping for real estate investors. The biggest mistakes Joni and Kirk see when it comes to bookkeeping for real estate investors are: Not keeping track of small transactions Not keeping receipts Not categorizing transactions The reason Joni and Kirk use Quick Books is because it helps keep everything organized for their clients. Quick Books makes it easy to see every aspect of bookkeeping for real estate investors. Which is why they say that not having any type of system is the worst thing to do for your business. Not tracking every single expense will end up costing your business lots of money in the long run. If you're in the need of a good bookkeeper, Joni and Kirk are the way to go. The first step is building up a report for your real estate investing business that's broken down by property so that you know where your money was spent. "You're not going to send us too much paper," Kirk says, half jokingly. The more a real estate investor can provide for them, the better. 6 or so months down the road of working with Joni and Kirk, there won't be as many questions. The more you two work together, the better their understanding of your business will be, and the more streamline the process will become. Because clients want specific reports, Joni and Kirk keep everything categorized and organized. Want to know where your marketing expenses are? They have reports for that! Knowing where your money is going and what's being spent will help keep your real estate investing business out of bookkeeping trouble.
Diva Tech Talk interviewed Loretta Yakima, currently a senior project manager under contract at ZF TRW (www.zf.com ). Loretta credits her parents for all facets of her success. “They grounded me so much,” she said. Her love for technology dated from her Michigan public high school’s career preparation center where she enrolled in a data processing class. “It was new and exciting.” She learned how to code in both RPG and Cobol, “two of the toughest languages” to master. With her programming proficiency, Loretta applied advanced credits to her college degree, and was offered a scholarship to a nearby business school. She matriculated to Oakland University, in Rochester, MI, with a major in Economics and a minor in Information Systems. She also worked full time first for a small consulting company, implementing “Y2K” code changes; and then in information technology for Tier One automotive supplier, Lear Corporation (www.lear.com). Later, Loretta would go on to get her MBA from Walsh College in 2009. After graduating Loretta became a programmer/business analyst at Pulte Corporation (www.pulte.com), a U.S.-based home-building company, where she grew as the company did. She worked with ERP software, and then developed a wide variety of Web-based applications, supporting every operation inside the company. Loretta then evolved into a project management role, where “we didn’t just focus on IT, but were engrained in the process side of things.” At Pulte, as the recession hit, she also worked on “how to change our business processes to become more efficient.” She moved from information technology, a few years later, and “hopped the fence” to Pulte’s finance department where she then managed the national purchasing shared services group, a total of 65 people, who managed the administration for all labor and materials contracts for the company. A key lesson that Loretta learned from her 15 years at Pulte was the importance of strong partnership between the information technology group and the rest of the business. She benefited from strong leadership training, particularly based on Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (http://www.franklincovey.com/leadership/7-habits.php/). When Pulte moved to Atlanta, Georgia, Loretta chose to remain in Michigan. She moved to a part-time role as a solutions architect, building customer applications for Detroit-based Digerati and then moved over to Chrysalis Global Consulting (http://www.chrysalisglobal.com), a company that specializes in change management and project management. Under the Chrysalis aegis, she landed her contract role at ZF TRW, a global automotive supplier. “My role is with the financial systems group. We are figuring out how to merge all the finance systems between ZF and TRW. It’s huge, and it’s exciting and it’s fun.” Loretta would catalogue her personal strengths as being a good listener/diagnostician, a hard worker, empathetic and a skilled multitasker. (“I love being busy. I love having a lot of things going on.”) To accomplish everything well in life, Loretta said: “You must stay positive, and learn to smile,” no matter what the situation. Loretta’s three main leadership lessons for other women and girls are: Don’t be afraid. Try technology out. Know yourself and what is uniquely important to you, personally. Learn how to network. Loretta would like to be involved with a company or an educational institution that “has enough financial backing to get started with students early on. I think back to the high school technology program in which I was involved. I would love to build more programs like that, because I think it’s so important --- especially for girls.” Loretta said. Diva Tech Talk spoke with Dr. Barbara Ciaramitaro, Chair of the Decision Science Department, and Director of the newly-expanded Cyber Security Center at Walsh College, a leading non-profit higher education institution offering fifteen business and technology degree programs, on both an undergraduate and Master’s level, as well as several business and technology certifications. Walsh is the first, in 2003, to have received the NSA’s official designation as an academic center of excellence in information assurance and in 2015 received an additional NSA designation as a center of academic excellence in cyber defense. Fascinated by science as a child, Barbara was born too soon to have computers as part of her early learning. After graduating from Wayne State University, though, she was exposed to the rapidly changing technology landscape through her first job at Dickinson Wright PLLC, where she was tapped to be part of the law firm’s team to evaluate and introduce new systems. From there she moved to Plunkett Cooney, after a decade, where she became Chief Technology Officer; received her Masters degree in software engineering; and led the firm in selecting and successfully implementing their first state-of-the-art litigation support and database systems. She had a similar role at Miller Canfield and then moved to General Motors. As the GM executive aligned with the internal legal department, she oversaw the development of a unique legal technology system, eventually awarded three patents and worth approximately $60 million. Barbara was also teaching part-time, while she worked at GM and decided to go back and get her PhD at Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida, as part of her evolving career plan. “I tell my students that you have to be strategic about your future,” Barbara says. “There are so many opportunities. You need to prepare yourself for the next one, even if you don’t know what it is right now.” Following her own advice, Barbara move to full-time academia after leaving GM. She migrated from Walsh to Ferris State University to design information security courses and was lured back to Walsh in a leadership position. Barb is very proud that at the top 100 companies in Michigan, there are Walsh graduates at all of them. Along the way, Barbara has learned many lessons: Speak the language of business, and to your business audience. Have patience. Stay on top of things when it comes to technology innovation, and new developments. As woman in the tech field, Barbara says “I was always aware that I was one of the few there, leading the charge. I grew up with the mantra that I had to be better than the men around me in order to be accepted. Know more, learn more, speak better, be better. I think that’s a horrible burden, but that’s what I felt I needed to do.” She says that bringing more women into the world of technology is one of her passions “because we need that.” Her advice to emerging women leaders includes some simple admonitions. “Remain curious,” she says. “Always look for new answers, new ways of doing things, new technologies. Be courageous since it’s not easy being a woman in the field of technology. And be true to yourself. Your personal integrity is the only thing you are going to carry with you through your entire life.” For the full blog write up, make sure to check us out on online at www.divatechtalk.com , on Twitter @divatechtalks, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/divatechtalk.
