Under the leadership of CEO Hiten Sonpal, the company has developed a groundbreaking alternative to hydraulics called Beltdraulics, inspired by the efficiency of human muscles. This innovative technology replaces traditional hydraulics, which rely on fluids and compression, with electric systems that use belts to mimic the tension in muscle fibers.Hiten explained, “Hydraulics required pumps, reservoirs, and hoses. They were inefficient and leaked everywhere. So, [the founders of RISE Robotics] came up with an alternative technology that we now call Beltdraulics.” Beltdraulics offers remarkable advantages, being three times faster, three times more efficient, and three times more durable than traditional hydraulic systems. The company's work is more than just an engineering feat—it's a green revolution. RISE Robotics' technology is already helping industries like oil and gas reduce emissions and improve efficiency. For example, their equipment can cut battery size requirements in half, reducing costs and infrastructure demands while doubling productivity. “If there's anything we can do to clean up [polluting industries], it would be fantastic from a company mission perspective,” Hiten said.RISE Robotics is also making waves with government contracts, including partnerships with the Department of Defense and interest from sectors like maritime, forestry, and mining. The potential applications for their technology are nearly limitless, as hydraulics are used in everything from cranes to farm equipment. As part of its growth strategy, RISE Robotics is raising capital through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. Hiten emphasized that the campaign offers investors terms similar to those of institutional backers, making this an exciting opportunity for individuals to invest in a clean, green future.RISE Robotics is not just innovating; it's paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable industrial landscape.tl;dr:Hiten Sonpal introduced how RISE Robotics is replacing hydraulics with clean electric systems.Hiten explained the company's Beltdraulics technology, inspired by muscle fibers, that's faster and more efficient.RISE Robotics is disrupting industries, from oil and gas to defense, while reducing emissions and costs.Hiten shared his superpower: building high-performing teams through diversity, psychological safety, and collaboration.Investors can join RISE Robotics' mission by participating in its Wefunder crowdfunding campaign. How to Develop Building High-Performing Teams As a SuperpowerHiten's superpower lies in his ability to build and lead high-performing teams. He explained, “To have a high-performing team, you need diversity—diversity of experiences, ideas, passions, and interests.” He also emphasized the importance of fostering “a culture of healthy conflict” where team members feel psychologically safe to voice their ideas and concerns. This environment enables teams to collaborate effectively, expand possibilities, and achieve more than they would individually. One powerful example of Hiten's superpower in action came during his time at iRobot. After a challenging trip to China, one of his team members called him out during a retrospective for not providing enough central coordination. Instead of reacting defensively, Hiten saw this as a success—a reflection of the psychological safety he'd created within the team. This openness allowed the team to improve and ultimately succeed. To develop this superpower, Hiten suggests creating a culture where feedback is welcomed and encouraged, even when it's directed at leadership. He also advises reducing complexity for teams by narrowing focus and cutting scope on projects, enabling them to move forward effectively.By following Hiten's example and advice, you can make building high-performing teams a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. While many expect trends to start in big coastal cities, this time something special is happening in the heart of Ohio. Amanda Ortega, founder and CEO of Beyond Bottleshop, is leading the charge to make intentional, alcohol-free drinking accessible to everyone.Amanda's shop in downtown Springfield, Ohio, offers a colorful selection of non-alcoholic and functional beverages — drinks that not only taste good but also help people feel energized, relaxed, or uplifted. She explained, “A lot of the non-alcoholic industry kind of exploded during COVID. A lot of the products that I carry were founded during that time. So we're not too far behind, and I'm just excited to be an industry leader in the Midwest.”Beyond Bottleshop started small, inside a local gift shop. As Amanda put it, “It was an opportunity for me to have a small space with not too much overhead and start selling these non-alcoholic beverages.” What began as a local experiment quickly grew into something much bigger. Customers now drive an hour or more to visit the store, and Amanda has launched an online shop to reach more people across the country. Her next goal is to expand into distribution, helping restaurants and bars create high-quality, non-alcoholic cocktails. “I'm really passionate about getting into the hospitality industry and bridging the gap between what's happening for people personally and what they can get when they're out,” she said. “I'm excited to bridge that gap with other businesses.”Amanda is also raising capital for Beyond Bottleshop through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Honeycomb Credit. The campaign allows community members to invest as little as $100 to help her business grow. “There are a lot of people who feel passionate about what I do,” she said. “What a cool opportunity that they can give a hundred dollars, a thousand dollars, or whatever is in their range to help a small business grow that's local.”Her passion for intentional drinking came from her own journey. After years of running a wine shop and working in hospitality with her husband, a chef, Amanda began to seek healthier, more mindful options. “I just became really passionate about intentional drinking,” she said. “It just felt like enough time has been spent in my life in and around alcohol. It was time for something different.”Through Beyond Bottleshop, Amanda is creating not only a business but also a movement — one that's reshaping how communities in the Midwest and beyond think about what's in their glass.tl;dr:* In this episode, I talk with Amanda Ortega, founder of Beyond Bottleshop, about the booming non-alcoholic beverage movement.* Amanda shares how her Springfield, Ohio, shop became a local hub for functional, alcohol-free drinks with national reach.* She explains her decision to raise capital through Honeycomb Credit, inviting community investors to fuel her growth.* Amanda reveals her superpower: fearless connection — diving in, building trust, and uniting people for shared success.* Together, we explore how authentic relationships and collaboration can drive business growth and positive social change. How to Develop Fearless Connection As a SuperpowerAmanda Ortega's superpower is fearless connection—the ability to dive in, take risks, and build authentic relationships that move ideas forward. As she explained, “My superpower is just diving in. I see a need, and it feels natural to make it happen if it's related to something I'm passionate about.” She combines her entrepreneurial spirit with a genuine love for people, creating trust and collaboration wherever she goes. Amanda's energy comes from her drive to connect with others who share her vision. “It just lights me up,” she said, “talking to other entrepreneurs and business owners about how we can move forward together—how we can change the world together.”One powerful example of Amanda's superpower in action comes from her work connecting local businesses. She described bringing together a sound bath practitioner, a yoga instructor, and her own non-alcoholic beverages to create an experience that nourished the body, mind, and spirit. “I said, Hey, I can bring drinks, you do this, and you do that, and it brings all our customers together for an even better experience,” she recalled. “That's how I see the world—bringing people together in that way and just building and bringing all our superpowers together.”Throughout this episode, Amanda offered practical insight into how others can develop their own gift for connection:* Start small. Attend local networking events or farmers markets to meet people with shared interests.* Ask thoughtful questions. Focus on understanding others' stories before sharing your own.* Build one-on-one trust. Find common ground and let authentic relationships grow naturally.* Encourage collaboration. Look for ways to align skills, goals, or audiences to create mutual benefit.* Stay fearless. Take risks by reaching out, offering ideas, and trying new partnerships.By following Amanda Ortega's example and advice, you can make fearless connection a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. When it comes to peacebuilding, business might not be the first answer that springs to mind. But for almost two decades, the Peace Through Business program has proved empowering women entrepreneurs is one of the most effective ways to repair broken societies. This was the first webinar in a series of three aimed at introducing people to the program's roots in Afghanistan, the women whose lives were changed and how urgently this work needs continued support - and growth. Watch our Interview Here. From Vision to Reality The Peace Through Business program was started by Dr. Terry Neese nearly 20 years ago at the suggestion of First Lady Laura Bush. The aim was humble but audacious: to empower Afghan women to enter their country's economic life, become business leaders and play a role in rebuilding a nation emerging from the darkness of Taliban rule. The public-private aspect of this from the very beginning made it different. This autonomy enabled the program to be flexible, creative and genuinely responsive to women. It also espoused a philosophy of paying it forward — the graduates were urged to not only expand their own businesses, but also to be advocates for others and create policies that would lift up other women across Afghanistan. Peace Through Business Program with Lasting Impact More than 900 Afghan women have been trained and mentored through Peace Through Business since 2007. These women are one of a kind trailblazers in every way. They have started Afghanistan's first printing press owned by women, established women's gyms to encourage health, ventured into logistics companies and forged a path into fields once thought inappropriate. One alum alone, for instance, sold her jewelry to fund a dried fruit-exporter dream. With the support of the program, she developed a business plan, figured out how to negotiate with international buyers and eventually, became one of the country's top exporters — until Taliban control prompted her to shut down operations. Today, she is building again, with resilience and strength. Other graduates teamed up to form the country's first Afghanistan Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This advocacy group turned into the Afghan Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which helped influence national trade policy, procurement laws and industrial land allocation processes — to ensure that women business owners were included in plans for the future. These are not small wins. They embody seismic cultural changes in a country where women were once banished from public life. Persevering Amid Crisis This whole success story was upended on August 15, 2021, when the Taliban reconquered Afghanistan. Decades of advances for women were rolled back in a single day. Gender Apartheid Since then, more than 130 decrees have curtailed women's rights, whatever those might be to a Muslim cleric in this type of Islamic state. But the women of Peace Through Business aren't ready to quit. Many are now operating home-based businesses, needing little more than a smart phone to connect with trainers and mentors. Former college professors, nonprofit workers and government employees — now unable to practice their professions — are remaking themselves as entrepreneurs. Their steadfastness to create livelihoods for themselves and others is an act of resistance and hope. Training That Changes Lives At its essence, Peace Through Business is more than a workshop or a certificate program. It's a meticulously planned learning trajectory. The participants acquire practical business skills — from writing business plans, to marketing and export. They are matched with mentors, often through virtual “e-mentoring,” enabling supporters from across the world to walk alongside them in their growth. Above all graduates take with them more than knowledge. They come away with a sisterhood —women committed to lifting one another. It's this network that supports them through hard times and drives the ripple effect of change in their community. Why Now Matters--Why You Matter More Than Ever This year, more than 120 Afghan women applied for just 35 slots in the program. Demand is exponentially greater than supply at present. In a world where Afghanistan is fading from the headlines, never has the help been needed more. “There is no other program that rivals it,” Monica Smiley, publisher of Enterprising Women and president of the Enterprising Women Foundation said in a webinar, “No matter where you are or what your career is … if you really want to make a difference in this world — significant difference — I can't think of a better example than the Peace Through Business program.” How You Can Help Afghan women are not seeking charity, they are asking for opportunity. And we can help provide it. With a contribution, you are providing support for training programs, mentoring and small grants that enable women to begin or rebuild businesses. When you volunteer as a mentor, you're sharing your experience, reinforcing courage and sounding a voice for the cause. Every donation or hour of volunteers time offers a lifeline to women who refuse to be silenced, women who are making jobs happen and changing policy plus in spite of impossible odds keeping hope alive. Join Us Learn more, donate or volunteer as a mentor at Enterprising Women Foundation. Together we can make sure that the voices and visions of Afghan women entrepreneurs are not just heard, but magnified. For when women succeed, communities succeed. And when peace is constructed through business it happens to be lasting. Brett is on a mission to solve a problem that almost every entrepreneur has felt: that frustrating sense of entrapment when communication breaks down in a fast-moving business. He works at the fascinating intersection of mindset, communication, and artificial intelligence, and our conversation was a brilliant exploration of how leaders can unlock flow and scale their organizations by, first and foremost, learning to communicate better. What I loved about our chat was how Brett brought it all back to a fundamental truth. We've all been in those work environments where the communication is good, where everyone feels like a genuine contributor to a shared mission. As Brett said, when it's good, "magic happens." People love coming to work. But we've also seen the flip side, when growth and new teams lead to silos and misunderstandings, and that magic quickly fades.Brett has seen the good and the bad over his 20 years in scaling businesses, and he's learned that even leaders with the best intentions can inadvertently create these communication gaps. It's not about blame; it's about awareness. His insights offer a powerful blueprint for rediscovering that collaborative magic, no matter the size of your team.It All Starts with You: A Diagnosis of Your Own Thinking PatternsSo, where does a leader begin? According to Brett, the first step is an inward one. He starts his work with leaders by conducting a "communication diagnosis" to help them understand how they themselves think and process information. This was a lightbulb moment for me. We all have our own default settings; a leader might be a "visual thinker" who sees the big picture, the grand vision. The problem arises when they're communicating that vision to a team member who is, as Brett explained, more "kinesthetic" and detail-oriented. The leader is talking about the "why," while the team member is desperate to understand the "how." Without this awareness, a disconnect is almost guaranteed. It's a simple yet profound realization that miscommunication often starts not with what is said, but with a mismatch in how it's processed. From Vision to Action: How to Finally Get Everyone on the Same PageOnce you have that self-awareness, you can start bridging the gap. Brett shared some wonderfully practical advice, emphasizing that leaders must consciously cater their message to all thinking types. And his golden rule for getting a message to stick is one I won't soon forget: "If you think you're communicating a lot... do it five times more." In a vacuum of information, people will naturally create their own stories, so consistent and clear repetition is your greatest ally. This extends to the very language we use in our values and vision statements. Brett gave a brilliant example of a vague vision to be the "biggest and best." What does that actually mean? Is it profit? Market share? Customer satisfaction? He urges leaders to break these terms down into specific, unified meanings. When you do that, the vision transforms from a nice phrase on a wall into a tangible goal that everyone can see, understand, and work toward together. My Unexpected Co-pilot: Using AI to See Our Communication ClearlyThis is where our conversation took a fascinating turn into the world of AI. Brett shared how, almost by accident, he discovered AI could be a powerful mirror for communication. By feeding transcripts of his research calls into an AI model loaded with his own custom language filters, he could extract incredible insights about a person's communication style—a process that would have manually taken him nearly 20 hours. This isn't just about spotting filler words, though Brett humbly admitted it helped him notice his own overuse of "um." His AI-powered diagnostic can identify a person's core thinking patterns, their motivation strategies (are they moving towards a goal or away from a consequence?), and so much more. It's a stunning example of using technology not to replace human intuition, but to augment and accelerate it.Your Second Brain: Leveraging AI for More Than Just Mundane TasksBrett sees AI's role extending far beyond diagnostics. He uses these fantastic metaphors of AI as a "second brain" you can use for brainstorming or a "bunch of smart friends in the room" you can bounce ideas off of without annoying your entire team. It's a way to refine your thinking before you even bring an idea to the table for a more meaningful discussion.By embracing AI to handle these kinds of tasks, or to automate the mundane work that clutters our days, leaders can free up their most valuable resource: their time and attention. This allows them to step away from the keyboard and do what only they can do: be present with their team, listen with empathy, and cultivate genuine human connection. The Paradox of Progress: Why Authenticity is Your New SuperpowerWe also touched on a compelling paradox of our modern age. As AI-generated content becomes more prevalent, our human capacity to spot in-authenticity is becoming sharper than ever. People can sense when a LinkedIn post or an email is written by a robot, and they are craving authenticity more than ever. This means the rise of AI doesn't diminish the need for great leaders; it makes them more critical. The leaders who will truly connect and inspire are those who are emotionally intelligent, who show up as themselves, and who aren't afraid to be human. Technology can handle the tasks, but it can't replicate true presence and empathy. The One Skill to Cultivate for the Next 50 YearsSo what is the most profound skill leaders should be cultivating for the future? When I asked Brett to look 50 years down the road, his answer was simple but powerful: learn to be curious. In a world where AI can provide answers in an instant, the uniquely human ability to ask great questions and to be genuinely curious about another person's perspective will be invaluable. It's about seeking to understand, not just to be understood. It's about fostering deeper connections and growing together, rather than living in conflict or a state of constant misunderstanding. This is the human skill that technology will never replicate, and it is the foundation of truly effective leadership. In Summary: My conversation with Brett Engeman was a masterclass in modern leadership. It's a call to look inward at our own communication styles, to be relentlessly clear in our vision, and to embrace technology like AI as a co-pilot that allows us to be more human, not less. By focusing on authentic connection and deep curiosity, we can navigate the future and build businesses where the magic truly happens. The Buzz - Our Innovation RoundHere are Brett's answers to the questions of our innovation round. Listen to the conversation to get the full scoop.* Most innovative use of AI to enhance human relationships – Use AI as a thinking co-pilot to clear your head and craft a better response before you react.* Best thing to integrate AI and human connection – Creating and using diagnostic filters in AI to reveal a person's unique communication style.* Differentiate by leveraging AI – Use AI as an exploratory tool to delve into your passions and help you find your purpose.ActionStart exploring AI as a practical support tool. It seems that almost everywhere in the world, there is conflict, distrust, and unrest – Gaza, Ukraine, Syria, and even here in the US. Oftentimes, any kind of diplomacy, cooperation, agreement, detente or finding a common ground seems impossible. But what if there was a different way? What if there was an organization that holds as its mission, “to transform the way the world deals with conflict, away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions?” What if those tactics included dialogue training, joint development projects, public art projects, sports leagues, and social impact entertainment via radio, TV, film, and print? Well, these are all accomplishments that John Marks has achieved in his work as President of Search for Common Ground, a peacebuilding NGO he founded in 1982 and built with his wife Susan Collin Marks, predicated on social entrepreneurship. He is the coauthor of the controversial New York Times best-seller The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence, the award-winning Search for the “Manchurian Candidate,” and we'll be doing a deep dive into his latest book, From Vision to Action: Remaking the World Through Social Entrepreneurship, just recently published by Columbia University Press. John is also a Skoll Awardee in Social Entrepreneurship and an Ashoka Senior Fellow. The UN's University of Peace awarded him an honorary doctorate for is work, and in 2018, Search for Common Ground was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. I found From Vision to Action to be both a memoir and somewhat of a practitioner's guide to the underlying principles of social entrepreneurship. It offers a master class in effective negotiation and conflict resolution. It builds on a core strategy of understanding differences and acting on commonalities. John uses his own experiences of creating real-life breakthroughs during his time leading Search for Common Ground. John's pioneering work has genuinely made the world a safer and better place for us all – he is an inspiration.

John Marks is the founder of Search for Common Ground, an international NGO whose purpose is to end violent conflict around the world. In 2018, Search was nominated for a Nobel Peace prize. Over the years some of their notable work has included helping to avert genocide in Burundi, supporting free elections in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and creating training in the Democratic Republic of Congo to curb sexual assault. Marks is the author of the new book From Vision to Action, Remaking the world through Social Entrepreneurship. Together, we spoke about how Esalen helped to launch his work and what he's learned in over 40 years of track 2, or citizen diplomacy. BIO: John Marks had an unconventional path to peacemaking, starting as a critic of the CIA and becoming a renowned social entrepreneur. Marks resigned from the State Department in 1970 to protest the United States' invasion of Cambodia. He co-authored a bestselling book, The CIA and the Cult of Intelligence, which exposed abuses committed by the CIA. His second book, which won a major award for investigative reporting, also focused on CIA abuses. In 1982, Marks founded Search for Common Ground (Search), an organization dedicated to conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Marks's journey showcases a remarkable shift from a career focused on exposing wrongdoing to a life dedicated to building common ground and fostering peace. Marks and his colleagues at Search were known as "Searchers," highlighting their dedication to seeking solutions and common ground in conflict situations.
John Marks says yes - and he and the organization he founded, Search for Common Ground, have made it happen. He tells us surprising stories about how they get people to listen to each other, across hard lines of hatred and suspicion: Russian and American intelligence officers, Iranians and Americans, Israelis and Arabs, Hutus and Tutsis in Africa - and more. John's memoir, From Vision to Action: Remaking the World Through Social Entrepreneurship, is like a how-to guide - filled with candid accounts of his successes and failures.
