It's a scary job.Creating a job for someone with Down syndrome is more than just good business—it's transformative. Emily Scott, co-founder of Dance Happy, shared her journey of building a thriving business alongside her partner, Julia, a woman with Down syndrome and the brand's lead pattern designer."Julia is so proud of everything that she does here. Dance Happy was her North Star during chemotherapy. She just wanted to get back to work," Emily explained.Founded in 2016, Dance Happy produces artisan-quality accessories like tote bags and pillows, all hand-cut, printed, and sewn, with 90% of production in the U.S. Julia's creativity is at the heart of the operation, with her hand-drawn designs driving the collection. Their dedication to quality has led to impressive partnerships, including Nordstrom, Madewell, and QVC. In fact, Dance Happy became the first Down syndrome founder brand carried by Nordstrom. The company is raising capital via Honeycomb Credit to scale its impact. Emily envisions a future where Dance Happy creates "more purposeful employment for people who have disabilities" in an inclusive setting. She described her dream of a larger facility that fosters integration: "We don't want to just create jobs for people with disabilities; we want an inclusive environment where everyone works together."Dance Happy's mission goes beyond profits. It's about showing the world what's possible when businesses embrace inclusion and creativity. As Emily dreams of making Dance Happy a household name, she remains committed to growing the team and maintaining the quality that has defined their success.Check out this remarkable business and investment opportunity at Honeycomb Credit.tl;dr:* Dance Happy's co-founders, Emily and Julia, create artisan-quality handcrafted products with purpose-driven employment.* Julia, a woman with Down syndrome, leads pattern design and inspires inclusivity through her work.* Dance Happy collaborates with major retailers like Nordstrom and QVC while maintaining high-quality craftsmanship.* Emily's fearlessness drives bold actions, from cold-pitching influencers to securing impactful partnerships.* The company is raising funds on Honeycomb Credit to expand opportunities for people with disabilities. How to Develop Fearlessness As a SuperpowerEmily embodies fearlessness, a critical trait for entrepreneurial success. Her willingness to step into the unknown without a safety net allows her to take bold actions, push boundaries, and seize opportunities, even in the face of rejection or uncertainty. This mindset has propelled her and her co-founder, Julia, to scale Dance Happy into a thriving business with a mission of inclusivity and purpose.Emily shared how fearlessness fueled Dance Happy's breakthrough moments. For instance, she cold-pitched Adam Glassman of Oprah Daily at a trade show despite knowing the odds were slim. Her fearless approach paid off, as Dance Happy has since achieved notable recognition, including becoming the first Down syndrome founder brand carried by Nordstrom. These leaps of faith exemplify Emily's commitment to her vision and her belief in the mission of creating meaningful opportunities for people with disabilities.Tips for Developing Fearlessness:* Practice Facing Rejection: Embrace each "no" as a step toward a "yes" and an opportunity to grow resilience.* Pursue Meaningful Goals: Focus on missions and dreams that ignite your passion and drive.* Take Bold Actions: Put yourself in situations that push your boundaries, like cold-pitching or applying for ambitious opportunities.* Reframe Failure: See setbacks as learning experiences rather than deterrents.* Adopt a Growth Mindset: Remember that persistence and practice can lead to success over time.By following Emily Scott's example and advice, you can make fearlessness a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. It took nearly a decade for Tim Murphy and his father Dennis to build Softies into a modestly profitable women's loungewear brand, and just one mention by Oprah to catapult it into a whole new stratosphere. A career manufacturer's rep specializing in women's apparel, Dennis Murphy decided to start his own company in 2006. Inspired by his wife Peggy who was battling leukemia, Dennis Murphy created a line of super soft, moisture wicking sleepwear. His son Tim Murphy joined the business, based out of their Edina garage, in 2008 and together, they built a decent following. "It was enough to live on, but we were at the point where it was stagnant," Tim Murphy says. Six years ago, at a Dallas trade show, the Softies Snuggle Lounger caught the eye of Oprah's longtime creative director Adam Glassman. Softies debuted on Oprah's Favorite Things list is 2017 and has managed to stay on the list every year since. How does a small company prepare for an Oprah-sized spotlight and not buckle under the pressure? Tim Murphy, who has served as president since his father retired, talks about how Softies has leveraged the attention to keep growing—from hiring a CEO to expanding the product assortment. He shares advice on leadership, perseverance, and product development. "You have to make a quality product, you have to sell a product you believe in. If you don't believe what you're selling, no one else is going to believe you.” Following our conversation with Murphy, we go Back to the Classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business. Marketing professor Mike Porter points out that Softies didn't just get lucky in making the Oprah list; the company positioned itself to get recognized and was ready to make the most of the opportunity. “That's just good business,” Porter says.

Wingnut Social: The Interior Design Business and Marketing Podcast
Robin Wilson grew up in Austin, TX with awful asthma and allergies. Her parents found a holistic pediatrician that said, “You can raise a strong child or you can raise a child on strong medicine.” So she started swimming, biking, walking, track, etc. to strengthen her lungs instead of taking strong medication. Because of her background, she became an advocate for clean construction. Any number of things on a site can lead to an asthmatic episode. So she dove deep into hypoallergenic design. Now, Robin Wilson is a U.S. lifestyle brand, author, designer and real estate developer. Named to the Inc. magazine Female Founders 100 List in 2020, she is a world-class thought leader on hypoallergenic, sustainable and eco-conscious options for the B2B and B2C marketplace. She is a two time #1 Amazon bestselling author and has been featured on multiple news segments as an expert on eco-friendly design and allergy-focused segments. Wingnut Social Episode #12 with Linda Holt The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson Resource Furniture Robin's story: following her passion Robin had a wonderful mentor/sponsor that helped her navigate her future. He asked her, “What would you do if you knew you could not fail?” followed by, “What is your passion?” Her answer was real estate. So he taught her how real estate worked and how to build wealth. She went on to get her Master's in Real Estate Finance. She was one of three women in the graduate program. One of her professors told her that she wasn't going to have an easy road because she was a black woman in a man's world. Instead of being offended, she decided to listen to him. He advised her to figure out something she could do immediately to make her degree worth something. He recommended she become a project manager—the busy homeowners' best friend. She made $1.2 million in her first year in project management. From project management to Clean Design Home Part of Robin's design signature started because she worked on tiny New York apartments that had doors everywhere. So she started implementing pocket doors in her design. On one particular project, she bought a Murphy bed that looked like a desk. She found a table that expanded to fit six people. She treated this client like royalty, not realizing she had connections in the industry. After this project, Robin got a phone call from Adam Glassman, the creative director for Oprah. She didn't return his phone calls because she thought she was being pranked. He called three times before she realized it was the real deal, so she called him back. One project changed the trajectory of her future career. Robin firmly believes, “If you do great work, people will tell four people. If you do poor work and you're nasty, mean, and rude—they will tell 20 people at a dinner party…If you do great work they will tell someone that's a likely customer in the future.” Clean Design Home Clean Design Home came about when Robin wrote her book, “Clean Design: Wellness for your Lifestyle.” It became a #1 best-seller on Amazon. Clean design is everything she does. She puts clean products in people's homes. She supports hypoallergenic lifestyles. Robin had a legacy brand, Robin Wilson Home. But she saw a shift in consumer spending from paying for quality to paying for cheaper products on Amazon. She felt her brand was gone and she was close to quitting. But Robin ended up being featured in articles about the top 10 black businesses to support. She changed to a generic name (Clean Design Home) to speak to her niche. She dug deep into the hypoallergenic space and created luxury products. She found a licensing partner and saw a 3,000% sales increase after the New York Magazine article. She made $80,000 in 30 days. Then she was signed by West Point Home (Martex) and they created “Clean Design X Martex.” In 2020, she was ready to quit. Now she has a global brand in Macy's. What does Robin believe was the secret to her success? How has Robin's marketing focus shifted since she launched her businesses? What tips does she share to help your business grow? Let’s face it, there’s nothing like popping the cork of a bottle of wine. There is just a certain level of romance to that process of opening a bottle of wine with a cork and hearing that “POP” sound. Then screw caps made the scene as a stopper, used as a cost savings measure. Now even premium wines have started using screw caps from time to time. But, what about wines from a can? In this episode, Shelley and Phil do the unthinkable and taste through three different Chardonnays from a can: Original House Wine Chardonnay, Buttercup Chardonnay and Free Seeker Chardonnay. Host: Brandon Elliott → Adam Glassman left the hospitality business is 2012 and jumped head first into real estate, a passion he always had. He joined "Fortune Builders" and then created "Property Buyers Group" which focuses on acquiring distressed property to rehab throughout Long Island and the boroughs. With the NYC market being one of the most competitive, Adam decided to surround himself with people that were much smarter than him and started to leverage everyone around him which to this day is how he runs his company. All his real estate deals are going through someone elses' system which opens him up to more time to do other bigger and better things in real estate. He takes on deals that most investors won’t touch due to legal battles and the like. He has won awards for his Facebook Page Content and is always helping other students and newbies out as much as he can. Adam is also New York State Licensed Salesperson and uses that to his advantage to do some off market brokering. Prior to real estate, Adam began his career in the kitchen at a Jewish Deli in Livingston, NJ, curing pickles. When he went off to college to Ohio State University, he studied Hospitality Management and worked in the kitchen. He moved down to South Florida to pursue his career and quickly became Sous Chef at the famous Prezzo in Aventura while pursuing a master degree in Culinary Arts from Johnson and Whales University. Upon returning to NYC, he went to work as Director of Operations and Events for 11 years at the Famous 200 Fifth Club and Tribeca Rooftop where he was in charge of over 100 employees with revenues in excess of 15 million dollars. He likes to cook, play guitar and go to music concerts in his spare time.
