Without the Jewish Deli, we'd be a nation without Pastrami on Rye and Matzo Ball Soup. But, it's so much more than that. It's the stories carried across generations and exile, which the Deli slices, pickles, and serves, that are so important. So what happens when the Deli, as an institution, starts to die? Author David Sax tells us what's at stake in a book he wrote around 15 years ago, but which the nest is revisiting because of a project Vanessa has embarked on with her company, Abre Camino Collective.
Today we're joined by one of our favourite ever guests in the legendary and impossibly cool Ruben Dawnay. At only 23 years old, he already has his own restaurant in Brixton Market, is about to open a second location in Peckham and has just won the Conde Naste 'One To Watch' Award at their global awards night. Ruben started smoking and selling meats from his parents garden during Covid and since then he's had a meteoric rise, whereby he's put on some of the most exciting pop ups and residencies across London, become Robin Gill's protege and now runs the best American smokehouse/Jewish Deli restaurant in Brixton Market called 'Ruben Reubens'. Ruben shares with us his incredible life story so far, his cooking inspirations, his favourite places to eat and drink, his plans for the future and the crazy highs and crippling lows he's already experienced as a restaraunter. --------- If you enjoy listening please leave a comment, subscribe and make sure you share this with others who you think would enjoy it as much as you have.
Potchke was just named by USA TODAY as one of the top 47 restaurants in the country. While we're stoked to see some Knoxville representation, Knox News started thinking about local restaurants we wish made the list. This casual conversation between your host, downtown reporter Ryan Wilusz, and fellow Knox News reporter Keenan Thomas led to a great discussion about the current state of the city's food scene and how success stories from restaurants like Potchke can help shape the future of food in Knoxville. "The Scruffy Stuff" is presented by knoxnews.com. Want more downtown analysis? This week on Blocked and Reported, Jesse and Katie discuss the attempted cancelation of Canadaland publisher and host Jesse Brown over allegations that he's a genocidal monster. Plus, news from the very online state of Oklahoma, Dear Prudence revisits the past, and a podcast announcement. (Update, 1/28/2024: At around 59:56 in the original version of this episode published for premium subscribers, in a brief digression that touched upon violent hate crimes linked to the Israel-Hamas conflict in the United States rather than Canada, we mentioned the Palestinians shot in Vermont. As it turns out, at the moment there's little evidence to support the idea that this was a hate crime; the alleged perpetrator seemed to struggle with mental illness, had a violent past, and his politics were all over the place, including, based on his social media posts, sympathy for the Palestinian cause. Since the segment in question was about Canada rather than the U.S. anyway, we've simply snipped the whole brief mention out, and the free version of the episode won't contain it. -Jesse)The Oklahoman: “Oklahoma bill would require 'furries' be picked up from school by parents, animal control”Rep. He also requested that we update the episode with additional context about Mark Bourrie, who Jesse claims has a personal vendetta against him because Canadaland published allegations that Bourrie took money from embattled politician MIke Duffy. We sat down with Robert Woloshin, Co-Owner of Manny's Deli and Manny's Deli Stop in Pennsylvania. After years of friendship, Woloshin and his fellow co-founders, Jeremy and Chase Thomas, renovated and opened Manny's Deli located in Holland, PA with the mission to update the concept of how a traditional Jewish Deli is. Armed with modern twists on traditional menu items, they found success. Recently they've expanded on their brand by opening a new fast-casual version of their deli: Manny's Deli Stop is their concept of an on-the-go eatery where traditional deli items can be ordered and enjoyed, offering a more stream-lined menu with grab-and-go options! Next, we spoke with Chef Elizabeth Falkner and her new documentary, "Sorry We're Closed." If her name is familiar to you, it's due to her numerous appearances on must-see culinary television shows as a competitor and judge, as well as being a cookbook author and successful restaurateur, having opened and run restaurants on both the West and East coast of the US. Now, she is taking us behind the scenes with an in-depth look at the mindset of fellow restaurateurs after 2020 and the impact that the pandemic and aftermath of civil unrest after George Floyd. You can stream "Sorry, We're Closed" online via Apple TV, Vudu, and Amazon Prime to see these heart-felt discussions with her colleagues and friends, and find the true depth of what it takes to own and operate restaurants.Lastly, we sat down with Event Organizer for Up Coming Events, Ray Sheehan. Sheehan, whose enthusiasm for what he does was almost palpable throughout the entire discussion, chatted about what you can expect when attending one of their events. Set up to highlight local businesses, you can attend one of their 4-hour sessions and taste your way through area restaurants, breweries, wineries, and distillers. If you want to know more, you can visit them online at UpComingEvents.com and attend an ultimate tailgating experience, food and wine festivals, and charitable events!

On Thursday's show: Two bookstores in Texas are suing over a new Texas law that requires them to rate books on their appropriateness and prohibits "sexually explicit" material from libraries. One of those booksellers is Houston's Blue Willow Bookshop. Its owner, Valerie Koehler, joins us to explain her concerns about the law. Also this hour: App permissions, cameras and microphones, scanned payments – there's so much of day-to-day life in Houston that's built on digital information about us. We ask a pair of local social media and cybersecurity experts just how much info about us is out there, how much privacy we've given away, and whether there's any way to take some privacy back. Then, Barbie dominated the box office last weekend. What that film's trying to say about us is the topic of this month's edition of The Bigger Picture. And we discuss the cultural significance of Jewish delis in conjuction with an exhibit at Holocaust Museum Houston that runs through Aug. 13.
Beloved culinary and cultural institutions, Jewish delis are wonderlands of amazing flavors and great food—bright, buttery, briny, sweet, fatty, salty, smoky. . . . In The Jewish Deli: An Illustrated Guide to the Chosen Food (Chronicle Books, 2023), comics artist and deli aficionado Ben Nadler takes a deliciously entertaining deep dive into the history and culture of this food and the places that serve it up to us across the counter. Nadler guides readers through the details and delights of each major food category, all playfully illustrated and each more irresistibly noshable than the last. Ben talks to New Books Network about how today's Jewish cuisine is not only guided by ancient Jewish religious rites, but is also rooted in stories of immigration. From pastrami to lox and black-and-white cookies to a bagel and schmear, he covers it with tales of the people making and baking, and his own personal hunger for culinary knowledge. The Borscht Belt is a Newtown deli named after a series of resorts in New York's Catskills, popular in the 1950's and 1960's. KYW's Hadas Kuznits spoke with the owners ahead of their Tuesday grand opening. On Thursday's show: We learn about the findings of the latest homeless count. Also this hour: Dr. Richard Ludwick, the president of the University of Saint Thomas, discusses the state of his institution and the challenges facing small, liberal arts colleges these days. Then, NPR recently reported on why ice melting in Antarctica is affecting Texas -- and Galveston specifically -- more than other places. Reporter Rebecca Hersher explains why. And a new exhibit focuses on The Jewish Deli, exploring how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, brought recipes and traditions with them to create an American restaurant staple of the 20th century.

Guest Ted Merwin, Ph.D. is a Senior Writer for the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA). Before coming to JFNA, he worked as AIPAC's Synagogue Initiative Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region. For many years, Ted taught Judaic studies at Dickinson College (Carlisle, Pa), where he was the founding director of the Milton B. Asbell Center for Jewish Life. Summary Look between the slices of rye bread of a traditional Jewish deli sandwich, and a time capsule of Jewish life in America emerges. The Jewish deli – a uniquely American institution – is the story of migration from Eastern and Central Europe and the struggle between wanting to retain Jewish culture and assimilate into American life. The story of Jewish life begins in the crowded tenements of New York City, migrates to the other boroughs, the nearby suburbs, and eventually throughout the U.S. Key Discussions How the Jewish deli in America √ emerged as an institution unlike what immigrants had experienced in the shtetls of Eastern Europe. √ evolved as a focal point of Jewish identity and remembrance, as a unifier of different immigrant Jewish cultures, and as a communal gathering place, especially for men. √ had its roots in the culinary habits of German Jewish immigrants √ rose in importance during the great depression and the rise of the American Nazi Party, especially in New York City. √ migrated outside of New York City – to the suburbs, Miami and Los Angeles – in the aftermath of World War II. √ as an institution declined due to various factors. Jake Dell and Evan Bloom visit Google to discuss what makes a Jewish Deli, the role delis play in American culture, and how Evan and Jake maintain the food traditions of their ancestors while operating modern businesses. Will Katz Deli ever give up their ticket system? Can there be more than one great Jewish Deli per city? Does the future of Jewish cuisine have room for vegan Rubens? These questions and many more are addressed in this talk. Many people know Katz's deli as the setting for the famous “I'll have what she's having” scene starring Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in "When Harry Met Sally.” But despite being a popular film location, Katz's was famous long before Hollywood came knocking. Its enduring slogan, “Send a salami to your boy in the Army,” dates back to World War II. Katz's is likely the most famous remaining Jewish-style deli in the nation, and has been dispensing its famous pastrami and corned beef on Manhattan's Lower East Side for more than 130 years. Ten rambunctious mice, a fractious cat, and an understanding priest declare peace so all can enjoy the secret stash of cheese and eggs hidden up in the church steeple all throughout Lent. Not far from the Acropolis, in the Church of the Holy Apostles in the ancient city of Athens, live ten rambunctious mice who hide their favorite foods from the church kitchen up in the steeple rafters. Cheese Sunday is the last Sunday before Lent, and after that, Father Joseph gets rid of all the cheese and eggs in the church kitchen for six weeks. Previously the mice lived in the Jewish Deli during Lent but they decide to raid the Fellowship Hall and stockpile the cheese and eggs until Easter morning. Since Cheese Sunday is Forgiveness Sunday, the mice decide that the parishioners can’t even be angry at them for stealing the food. First thing on Cheese Sunday, the mice scurry down the church steeple into the Fellowship Hall where Muffin the cat prances about. As the nuns finish setting up the special meal and Muffin sleeps in a corner, the ten church mice collect every last morsel of the different kinds of cheese and eggs and carry it all up to the rafters in the steeple. The congregation finds the messy Hall and wonders what happened to its beloved annual cheese celebration. They blame Muffin, who runs into Father Joseph’s study and shuts the door with his tail. The priest marches into his study, grabs Muffin and goes up to the bell in the steeple, looking for the naughty church mice. He calls out that he knows where the cheese went and finds the rebellious mice sitting next to the cheese and eggs with guilty smiles. Muffin jumps to pounce as the church mice scurry away. The priest tells Muffin he can’t chase the mice on Cheese Sunday because it’s almost Lent. Besides, Father Joseph at least knows where to find the cheese if they get hungry during Lent. Then Father Joseph sits down next to the mice. With Muffin keeping watch, the priest eats his portion of the rationed cheese and eggs for the day, and every other day throughout Lent. He announces with a chuckle that cheese tastes almost as good as forgiveness. The church mice could do nothing but agree.

This episode is the recording of that discussion. Ted covers the origin of the deli, its place in greater New York City culture, expansion around the country, the slow end of the deli era, and what he believes the future holds for this once beloved institution. Overrated Tradition? Why Fresh Perspective Will Save the Jewish Deli Presented by Aaron Steingold Who doesn’t love Deli food? From the cornucopia of Jewish food delights that include corned beef on rye, chopped liver, chicken matzo ball soup, and lox and cream cheese on a bagel, Chicagoans have been relishing Deli food for generations. While there were hundreds of delis in the first part of the 20th century, today, not so many. (Ashkenaz, you are missed.) Yet the Deli still survives, with traditional food being served at stalwarts like Manny’s and the Bagel on Broadway, and “newish Jewish food” generously doled out at the likes of Steingold’s on West Irving Park. Please join us as proprietor Aaron Steingold takes us on a nostalgic memory nosh of Chicago’s deli history and talks about the Renaissance of the Jewish Deli in our city. (Corned beef on rye with a twist, you could say.) Samples? What, you think we’d leave you hungry? Oy! BIO: Raised in Charlottesville, Virginia to Brooklyn-bred parents, Aaron Steingold grew up in a kosher household, and visited New York’s delis often. A self-described “restaurant lifer,”Steingold came to Chicago 12 years ago and worked at Charlie Trotter’s, Art Smith’s Table 52 and several other key eateries here before opening his namesake Steingold’s with his wife, Elizabeth Abowd, in 2017. The deli is located at 1840 W. Irving Park. Recorded May 4, 2019 at Weiss Memorial Hospital https://culinaryhistorians.org/overrated-tradition-why-fresh-perspective-will-save-the-jewish-deli/
