Entry #45. I know this might sound contradictory coming from an influencer and content creator, but I feel that social media addiction is a concerning problem in our current culture, and I believe strongly in learning how to practice healthy habits and mindful moderation when it comes to social media consumption. I've had an off and on struggle with social media addiction, and today I'm sharing my story and helpful (scary?) information I've found in various studies and articles online that pertain to how excessive social media consumption affects all of us. Also, why did no one tell me about Timothee Chalamet? And tell me I'm not the only one who pre-grieves, please. JOURNAL PROMPTS from addictioncenter: Do you spend a lot of time thinking about social media or planning to use social media? Do you feel urges to use social media more and more? Do you use social media to forget about personal problems? Do you often try to reduce use of social media without success? Do you become restless or troubled if unable to use social media? Do you use social media so much that it has had a negative impact on your job or studies? A recent report from CyberCrew revealed how UK residents spend an average of 110 minutes per day on social media. Many of us start scrolling before we've even got out of bed in the morning, in an almost automatic way. Social networks can have a similar effect on the brain to certain addictive substances. According to Healthline.com, they stimulate the brain's reward system. When you log in to your favorite social media platform, you get a burst of dopamine, a chemical that makes you feel good and motivates you to seek more of the same stimulus. Why do we end up scrolling on Tiktok and Instagram for hours on? How does it work in concrete terms? Is it fair to say that social networks were designed to be addictive? How can you tell if you're addicted to social media? Stop telling me that I'm addicted to social media. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not – says every addict on the planet. Oh, but you are. If you're interested in a bit of self-diagnosis, here are a few questions for you. Have you tried to cut back and failed? Does your social media diet cause conflicts at work or in relationships? Do you use it when you're bored or alone? Do you get anxious when you're not on it because of FOMO also known as the “fear of missing out”? Do you think it's woven into your life in such a way that you use it throughout the day? Like others who are addicted to substances, do you find yourself using more and more because the thrill just isn't there unless you stay on it longer? If you've answered “yes” to three or more of the questions, you're likely a social media addict. Work to achieve balance by easing the grip that social media has on your life. Make time for and value interactions with your family. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/drclaudia/message

Social media usage is at an all time high, and people say its addictive, but is it? Or are we distracted by it for other reasons? And thus, is procrastination a real or imagined problem? As an expert in behavioural psychology and as someone who has helped tech companies develop such ‘addictive’ apps, I speak to Nir Eyal on the fascinating world of technology, a huge part of our modern lives. We discuss life traction vs distraction, procrastination, time blocking, life systems for better control, if a % of the population are pathologically out of control with such devices and technology, and more. Have you ever been sitting at home bored and restless, feeling like you are going nowhere? Do you pull out your phone, turn on the television, or reach for a drink to numb this restlessness? Your home is supposed to be a place of reflection, intimacy, and growth. But in these moments, it is all too easy to become paralyzed and cease to walk in your vocation. We all have been given 24 hours in a day and as a disciple, you are a steward of that time. Today, Jeff reflects on two Bible passages: Jesus healing a paralyzed man (Luke 5:24) and the faith of the Centurion (Matthew 8:5-13). Through these two passages, Jeff provides 3 things you can do to break free, rise up, and walk. *Snippet from the Show: * We all experience these kinds of paralysis in our life, but it points to something deeper and that is that we cannot get to heaven on our own. We need Jesus, we are paralyzed in terms of our eternal destiny and we desperately need him to help us. SHOWNOTES Jesus Heals a Paralyzed Man But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the one who was paralyzed—“I say to you, stand up and take your bed and go to your home.”(Luke 5:24) The Faith of the Centurion When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, appealing to him and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible distress.” And he said to him, “I will come and cure him.” The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; but only speak the word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and the slave does it.” When Jesus heard him, he was amazed and said to those who followed him, “Truly I tell you, in no one[d] in Israel have I found such faith. I tell you, many will come from east and west and will eat with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven, while the heirs of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” And to the centurion Jesus said, “Go; let it be done for you according to your faith.” And the servant was healed in that hour. (Matthew 8:5-13) 3 Things You Can Do To Rise Up and Walk 1. Identify your vocation, father, mother, husband or wife, single, priest, deacon. What area of your vocation are you continually sitting in the lazy boy instead of walking in your call? 2. Pick a good book and start reading it when you would otherwise be watching squirrels roller skate on Youtube. 3. Are their any habits that you are caught in that are costing you big time? TV, eating. Exchange this for bible reading or adoration. Resources The Book “Unbound” by Neal Lozano The Great Adventure Bible

Alright, here it is, the "Everybody quit social media right now!" episode. Not really, but at the least, I want us all to become aware of how and when we use social media and identify what our intentions are when we use it. Let's take a step back and evaluate whether or not we think we are addicted. Oh, and even more importantly, let's recognize that it can contribute to our anxiety and depression and obviously our FOMO. I'll share some ways that we can combat the downsides of social media and embrace the positive aspects. Let’s start a movement by setting a positive example. Set boundaries with your social media, be intentional, avoid the obvious pitfalls, pass it on. Tell your friends. We can do it. Bye.
We are all living in the information bubble or filter bubble, meaning we are living in a state of intellectual isolation that can result from personalised searches, who we follow, how we interact on social media and who we interact with. It is really scary stuff and well worth a listen.
