Ed Slattery has a passion for taking elite athletes to the next level as a hugely experienced strength and conditioning coach who has worked with Irish Rugby for coming up in a decade. Take a listen to this CV – Athletics Performance Coach for Irish women's rugby; Athletic Performance Coach for Sevens and Womens Rugby; Athletic Performance Coach for Mens Rugby; and now his current role as Head of Athletic Performance for the Womens Pathways and National team. What that means, to you and me, is that he's absolutely brilliant at helping get the absolute best out of players across the Irish national rugby set-up – and that has taken him through Six Nations campaigns, to the Tokyo Olympics and so much more. He's also been a long-time listener to the podcast – and when we started chatting about him coming on, he was more than happy to join us – even if he was worried he wouldn't have anything interesting to say. Turns out he was wrong about that, as he's a brilliant guest, and we get into all sorts of things! We talk about the skills of high-performance coaching and getting into it in the first place; about getting players on-board and seeing results; the Tokyo Olympics and that experience with Ed; his own personal journey and how being his authentic self made him a better coach; and loads, loads more. This isn't Ed's ‘coming out' story, as more than a few folks know his story – but plenty of others don't so we hope you enjoy it, as it's a cracking conversation with a great guy. There is an event taking place in Dublin tomorrow and its called Together we can, its being held at the 3 arena in Dublin and will feature speakers like actor Colm Meany, James Nesbitt, Leo Varadkar, Mary Lou McDonald, among others. And it's a forum for discussion on the future of this country. On the face of it, it might seem like a bit of a vapid PR exercise but do we need to be more open and active in our conversations about the future? Ali was joined by former Tipp senior hurler Timmy Hammersley who also works in the Non Profit sector and individually as an Athletic Performance Coach.
This week on the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob is speaking to Shane Lehane, Athletic Performance Coach at the Sydney Swans in the AFL. Shane has lots of experience in rugby union with Leicester Tigers and Melbourne Rebels and it is these two contrasting experiences that we chat about today. Shane describes the programme at Leicester working under Alex Martin where the strength and power programme was high up on the priority list due to the demands of how the team played. That is in contrast to his time at Melbourne where the style of play was completely different, leading to the strength and power programme falling down the priority list when the weekly schedule was being developed. He discusses how his philosphy evolved and how his time at Leicester, where they focused on lifting with exercise that had a low a technical bias so to maximise raw strength and power, has shaped his thoughts moving forwards. Key talking points - Working at Leicester Tigers where strength and power was a priority Prescribing exercises with low technical bias What the programme actually looked like How coordinative drills transfer to on-field performance The influece of Frans Bosch, John Pryor and Dean Benton Working at Melbourne Rebels where the strength and power programme didn't take priority Building a framework that helps future staff make better decisions at the Swans

That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” Dr Erik Korem “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience: “Whenever you are sparring, your mind will have a given direction of focus. The most basic division is between self focus and focus on the opponent.” - John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience Blue Print host Dr. Erik Korem on high performance mindset and resilience: “In sport, our goal is to develop the most adaptable athletes with the most resilience who can consistently obtain their high performance mindset and potential.” - Dr. Erik Korem on high performance mindset and resilience, host of The Blue Print John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience: “Philosophy was crucial because it is among the best means of developing a problem solving mindset.” - John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience Blue Print host Dr. Erik Korem on high performance, performance mindset, and resilience: “The key is using that stress and being able to adapt to it to improve. That's what high performance to me is: the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential.” - Dr. Erik Korem on high performance, performance mindset, and resilience, host of The Blue Print John Danaher on high performance mindset and resilience: “The greatest determinant of the outcome of your matches over time by a landslide is your training and lifestyle mentality. Now working in the private sector, Lachie talks about his move from pro sport and how he loves working for himself. He shares how he likes ‘being the boss', going through his own schedule and having to answer to himself within the industry. It can add some pressure, but he welcomes the pressure in order to be better. His passion and his attention to details helps him master this pressure for him to thrive at Athletes Authority. Lachie discusses his passion at Athletes Authority in bridging the gap between aperture and pro sport. Lachie shares his experience at GWS and being the first in his role at the club creating the building blocks for the much more well-known GWS Giants today. Making progress from being in several locations for a professional club to now being within the same facility. Lachie recalled how exhausting it was to travel to the local pool between session, or to the gym after a field session. Things that are now unheard of with professional sporting organisation. But they started small and Lachie recalls being a part of that culture and setting the scene for future athletes and practitioners to thrive in the environment. Lachie reflects that at the time, he didn't even recognise how big of an influence he was having in an AFL club, compared to other clubs who have decades of history. He is very thankful for the opportunities he has had with great mentors such as John Quinn (past guest of the podcast) and Mark Williams The role involved with the Strength and Conditioning Coach have their place in a team. You can influence the skill of the performance by increasing someone's physical capacity. But the s+c coach doesn't guarantee performance. Lachie refers to examples of ‘sportsman' who may not be the most physical of specimens, but they would be the ones that scored the goals and performed the sport well thanks to their skill. So, the s+c coach needs to know their place and where to best apply their craft within a team of individual sport. The s+c coach can provide the opportunity for athletes biomechanically to perform at their peak. ‘You can never give offense you can only take offense'. You choose your response, but your team just wants you to grow as they know that you are better. This is true for both players and coaches as everyone has someone they need to answer to. Taking it personally might mean you're not in the right business. Media and those outside of the sporting world think that a team isn't function well together when such clashes and disputes are witnessed. But this is pure emotion and driven by the expectations of that team. Lachie talks about how he takes a message, whether it be harsh feedback or not, and how if he trusts the person, he will take it literally, not personally. https://www.linkedin.com/in/lachlan-wilmot-21165460/?originalSubdomain=au https://twitter.com/lachlan_wilmot?lang=en https://athletesauthority.com.au/about-us/ https://www.instagram.com/performancecoach_wilmot/?hl=en
