In this episode, Robert shares the need to understand the veterinary business as a whole, from the service to the non-service products to come up with the best pricing strategy.   Why you have to check today's podcast: Understand how veterinary practice is different from other industries Consider the use of good, better, best pricing strategies when dealing with veterinary services and products Learn to holistically understand the veterinary business from the two sides -- the service and the non-service aspect to create best pricing strategies   "The hypothetical practice where the veterinarian also acts as the practice manager which the more you go up in size you have multiple practices, and then you get to these corporate entities, they try to avoid that like the plague." - Robert Ribciuc   Topics Covered: 02:31 - Robert's thoughts on what is said as unreasonable expenses in taking care of pets 07:07 - Understanding the dynamics of the veterinary practice as totally different from other industries 11:49 - How are the bigger veterinary companies leading when it comes to price increase? 14:22 - Payment schemes to consider for veterinary expenses 15:22 - How should veterinarians deal with pricing  17:19 - Staying in the veterinary business for long-term 18:17 - The concept of having a practice manager responsible for pricing, instead of the practice owner [implementing the good, better, best pricing] 22:01 - How to effectively manage pricing for the diverse range of services and products offered by a veterinary practice  27:49 - His definition of business success   Key Takeaways: "One of the trends we should talk about is adoption or non-adoption of insurance in this space and other types of concepts from pricing like subscription or wellness plans, where instead of having that one time pain that is potentially dramatic and brings you to tears, you have a tiny bit of pain every month, but hopefully short of tears." - Robert Ribciuc  “If you are one of these practices and you're selling a product, you take the case of medication that's being sold. And some of these practices sell some of the medication physically in the practice. And then there are providers like vet source, which is a way to have your online pharmacy that's like your practices ordering portal for your practice customers, that's a pretty significant part of revenue for a practice. And so there are questions over there. How do you get sophisticated with pricing in that space?” - Robert Ribciuc    People/Resources Mentioned: Blue Pearl Emergency: https://bluepearlvet.com Banfield Pet Hospital: https://www.banfield.com Mars: https://www.marsveterinary.com General Mills: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Mills Blue Buffalo: https://bluebuffalo.com VHMA: https://www.vhma.org/home   Connect with Robert Ribciuc: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ribciuc/ Email: robert@ebitdacatalyst.com   Connect with Mark Stiving: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/ Email: mark@impactpricing.com

In this episode, Mel discusses how to use layers of technology to support communication among employees, how to increase diversity in a predominantly white profession, and the many ways Banfield is making the veterinary profession more accessible.Quotes*”It's so important to have that human connection. One of the things that we know is that word of mouth is how connection happens [and] how community is really fostered. And so whether it's through our diversity resource groups, whether it's through our mental health and wellbeing offerings, we've really balanced low tech, medium tech, high tech to be able to create community and draw community around some of these major topics.”*”At the end of the day, what we do is for our people. It's not for the business. It's to make a better world for our people.”*”We have a mission to truly understand people for who they are, their whole selves, everything about them. Truly understand their capabilities, truly understand what's possible, versus that proverbial ‘judging a book by its cover'. I count it my mission personally to ensure that [in] any organization that I work with, people will come first. We will listen. We will listen at scale, and we will act on what our people say.” *”Relationships, relationships, relationships…the ability to partner well and successfully is going to come from having great relationships with your team, to partner well and collaborate. As they say, teamwork makes the dream work. And so the more that you can start your career with relationships at the foundation, I think will be critical.”*”The people strategy is the business strategy.”Time Stamps*[4:23] The Flight Plan: Get to know Banfield Pet Hospital*[7:38] First Class: Best EX practices at Banfield Pet Hospital*[25:21] Turbulence: EX lessons learned*[37:55] Advice for other EX leadersLinksConnect with Melissa on LinkedInCheck out Banfield Pet HospitalThanks to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by Firstup, the company that is redefining the digital employee experience to put people first and lift companies up by connecting every worker, everywhere with the information that helps them do their best work. Rags to riches is a uniquely United States story. It's the American Dream of starting from humble beginnings, working hard, fighting against adversity and making something of yourself. Brian Garish embodies this ethos. Though, his version is a little different. Garish went from stocking shelves at Walgreens to becoming the president of Banfield Pet Hospital, the largest pet hospital chain in the U.S. He began his career stocking shelves at the local Walgreens pharmacy during high school. Garish dropped out of college after only a six-month stint when he was 18 years-old. It was a trying time. Back at home with his parents, he felt lost without any direction. As he explains, "At the time, I didn't see the value of sitting in class to hear about business. I wanted to do the work." A mentor at the pharmacy chain suggested that Garish focus on working hard and advancing within the organization, especially since he didn't have any other alternatives. After serving about 12 years as a manager at Walgreens, then spending more than 10 years rising from district and regional manager roles to area vice president at CVC Health, Garish is now the president of Banfield Pet Hospital, the industry's leading provider of preventive care, a division of Mars Inc.

Lately it seems you just can't get in to see your vet. A new study from Banfield Pet Hospital reveals an estimated 75 million pets in the U.S. may not have access to the veterinary care they need by 2030, with an important factor being a critical shortage of veterinarians. This pandemic pet boom has overwhelmed veterinarians nationwide, so getting an appointment with a local vet has become increasingly difficult.  So-- What is the leading cause of the veterinarian labor shortage?  Healthcare workers and those in public service-facing roles have borne the brunt of this pandemic, and that includes veterinarians. While much of our attention has been focused on the COVID-19 virus and how it affects humans, it's important to remember that animals never stopped needing medical care as well. Unfortunately, the pandemic accelerated an already worrying trend in this regard. Simply put, veterinarians are overwhelmed. According to National Pet Owners Survey, 70% of U.S. households had a pet in 2021 (approximately 90.5 million families.) Yet, there are only 86,000 licensed veterinarians. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics recently went so far as to update the 2020-30 job outlook for vets – at an incredible 17%. That's almost 5,000 new veterinarians being added every year - just to keep up. “There's nothing more joyful than sharing your blessings and helping others become successful"I speak with Dan Regalado, Vice President of Digital Platforms and Enterprise Technology, at Banfield Pet Hospital. Dan grew up in a small rural town of roughly 1,500 people around 500kms from Manilla, Philippines. Both of his parents were government workers, also owning rice fields as a secondary income and to help their local community. After attending university in Manilla (where his accommodation wasn't the most pleasant of experiences and he had to survive on $20 per month), Dan fulfilled a lifelong dream to move to the US.Arriving with his wife, a new-born and six bags of luggage, Dan had to work hard to get to where he is today as an accomplished company vice president, managing global teams and huge budgets. We chat about Dan's journey and touch on how he manages work/life balance through Ironman challenges, as well as why kindness, compassion and diversity should always have a space in the workplace.Dan also places a strong emphasis on staying connected to his roots – never forgetting the small town he grew up in and some of the hardships he faced along the way.I have a huge amount of respect for Dan – having worked with him I can say first-hand just how much of a great leader he is, and listening to his story, I can 100% see why that is.Thanks for sharing your journey Dan!Other episodes you may like:#23 Robert Cleave: Lessons from cycling around the world#22 Rochelle Gilburn: Finding your why#18 Luke Wigman: Injured veteran turned endurance athlete#10 Ryan Romano: Vulnerability and developing your self-identityJoin the Connections Untold community:InstagramFacebook

When Covid hit, several industries were hit hard, but some thrived immensely. One such industry that’s seen a huge uptick in business this past year has been the pet industry, as 11 million households got a new pet in 2020. Wow! That’s a lot of new family members. But Banfield Pet Hospital is here to help new pet owners manage all that animal energy. On this week’s episode, Erica sits down with Banfield Pet Hospital president, Brian Garish, to talk all things cats, dogs, and leadership in the (hopefully pet-friendly) Hybrid Revolution. With over 1000 hospitals and over 19,000 associates servicing all these new furry friends, how does Brian lead through it all? By talking to his people. Brian leads with empathy and knows that the key to an empowered, passionate workforce is one that feels heard and sees vulnerability modeled at the top. This conversation imagines an optimistic future of work, where we can continue giving our pets the “best year of their lives” indefinitely, through flexible work options. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review on Apple Podcasts You can also listen to the show on: StitcherOvercast GoogleSpotify Quotes:4:23 – “When you think about being a leader in a company, and being part of the conversation of, ‘what’s the hybrid work force going to look like? what are the hybrid working conditions going to look like?’ It can’t be made with just an executive team, it has got to have your people’s voice involved in the conversation.”10:16 – “Culture is my top priority and has been my top priority. The strategic direction of the company is a second priority because strategy without empathy is a wasted idea.”10:41 – “More so now than ever, people want to be seen, they want to be heard, and they want to be understood. And we have that opportunity to do that even better.”12:30 – “The theme of our session for the year for 2020 was ‘b empowered, b passionate, and b here.’ We wanted our associates to be empowered to truly own the hospital experience and own what they needed to do to take care of each other and take care of pets and clients. The passion is about really connecting to our purpose, which is making a better world for pets. And being here is out Banfield shows up for society. Well we were thankful that that was the theme because that really anchored us in 2020 once the pandemic really started to come in.”17:35 – “We can’t be our best selves if we don’t take care of ourselves. Our hospitals and all of our associates need our leaders to be present and to be fully available. And you’re not going to be if you’re burned out.” Links to Websites or Resources, text numbers email signupsBanfield websiteErica’s websiteOrder Erica’s book, Rituals RoadmapOrder Erica’s book, Bring Your Human to Work Text ‘human’ to 66866 to sign up for Erica’s newsletter where she shares how to honor relationships well and how to bring your human to work and life.Connect with Brian:LinkedInTwitterInstagramFacebookConnect with Banfield:LinkedInTwitterInstagramFacebookConnect with Erica: InstagramTwitterLinkedInFacebook

In this Real Estate News Brief for the week ending April 10th, 2021... an economic forecast from the International Monetary Fund, home price growth around the world, and a survey on having pets at work.Economic NewsWe begin with economic news from this past week, and an upbeat forecast from the International Monetary Fund. The IMF raised its 2021 U.S. economic outlook from 5.1% to 6.4%. It expects to see a slowdown next year to 4.4% which is stronger than the Federal Reserve’s 3.3% prediction. The IMF also expects that pandemic-related losses for other major economies will be smaller than what we saw after the financial crisis. It is expecting global growth to be just slightly less than the U.S. this year, and about the same next year. The IMF also expressed support for the Fed’s “go slow” policy on interest rate hikes and tapering. The IMF’s chief economist, Gita Gopinath, says: “They have pledged to, kind of, given sufficient advance warning if they are going to reverse course… so we expect that would happen.”Weekly unemployment claims jumped higher for a second week in a row. Economists had expected them to decline but the Labor Department reported 728,000 new state claims. That’s 16,000 more than the previous week. Before the pandemic, the weekly average was around 220,000. If you combine all the new and continuing benefits from both state and federal programs, the total is 18.2 million. Before the pandemic, there were less than 2 million people collecting benefits. On a positive note, job growth is surging. The government says there were 7.37 million jobs available in February. That’s up from 7.1 million in January. It says that 5.74 million people were also hired in February, and the U.S. gained another 916,000 new jobs in March. Those are all good numbers.Mortgage RatesThere’s also good news on mortgage rates. Freddie Mac says the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dropped 5 basis points, to 3.13%. That’s after seven weeks of higher rates. Freddie Mac says that mortgage rates are lower because of a “modest decline” in U.S. Treasury yields. In other news making headlines...Worldwide Home PricesHome prices are going up around the world. International property consultant Knight Frank says that average urban home prices went up 5.6% last year. That’s up from 3.2% in 2019. Emerging markets are seeing some of the strongest price gains, including Turkey which has a few cities at the top of the list. In Ankara, the year-over-year increase is 30.2%. Ismir and Istanbul are close to that. Turkish inflation is pushing those prices higher, but other countries are seeing double-digit year-over-year increases. Cities in Russia, New Zealand, Canada, and South Korea are all near the top of the list. U.S. cities with double-digit price growth include Phoenix at 14.4%, Seattle at 13.6%, San Diego at 13%, Boston at 11.4%, Washington, D.C. at 10.3% and Minneapolis at 10.2%.Higher Property Taxes for HomeownersAs home prices soar, so do home values and property taxes. ATTOM Data Solutions says that U.S. property taxes rose 5.4% in 2020. The average for single-family homes in 2020 was $3,719. That translates into an effective tax rate of 1.1% but researchers say many states have much higher tax rates. The highest is New Jersey with 2.2%. Illinois is second at 2.18%. And, Texas is third at 2.15%. At the low end is Hawaii with a tax rate of .37%. CA Landlord Accepts Bitcoin for RentThe Los Angeles-based real estate company Caruso announced that it will accept rent payments in bitcoin from residential and commercial tenants. Developer Rick Caruso founded the company which is known for high-end outdoor malls like The Grove in Los Angeles and a resort near Santa Barbara.Caruso said during a CNBC interview that he hopes to create a whole ecosystem where tenants and guests can use cryptocurrency to check into a resort, pay rent, and buy things while visiting Caruso properties. He says it’s a long-term strategy that anticipates what the world might be like in the next decade, and not just the next year or five years.Pet-Friendly WorkplaceThe pet-friendly workplace could become more common as companies try to lure employees back to the office. A new survey shows that a lot of bosses realize how important pets have been during the pandemic and that many may allow pets at work.In a survey by Banfield Pet Hospital and OnePoll, half of the executives said they are planning to allow pets at the office and 59% said they would adopt policies that give employees flexibility to take care of their pets. One reason for this benevolent attitude is that 75% of the executives said that being a pet owner has made them better, more compassionate business leaders. There have also been a lot of employee requests for a more pet-friendly workplace. If you want more information about any of these stories including home price growth in specific cities around the world and property tax rates for different U.S. states, you'll find links on the podcast player page for this episode at NewsForInvestors.com.Links:1 - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/imf-lifts-outlook-for-global-and-u-s-growth-11617712232?mod=mw_latestnews2 - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/imf-backs-go-slow-fed-11617719428?mod=economy-politics3 - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/jobless-claims-move-higher-for-second-straight-week-11617886018?mod=economic-report4 - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/u-s-job-openings-climb-to-7-37-million-and-top-pre-pandemic-levels-as-economy-speeds-up-and-more-people-hired-11617718171?mod=economy-politics5 - http://www.freddiemac.com/pmms/#6 - https://www.worldpropertyjournal.com/real-estate-news/united-kingdom/london-real-estate-news/real-estate-news-knight-frank-2020-global-cities-index-2020-international-home-buyer-data-covid-19-impact-on-foreign-home-buyers-12450.php7 - https://magazine.realtor/daily-news/2021/04/08/property-taxes-jumped-54-in-20208 - https://www.cnbc.com/2021/04/07/rick-carusos-company-to-begin-accepting-rent-payments-in-bitcoin.html9 - https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/a-lot-more-post-pandemic-offices-are-going-to-be-pet-friendly-new-survey-says.html

This was definitely a full house, but a fun show highlighting Muscular Moving Men & Storage, M3 Commercial Moving & Logistic, and PetSmart. This conversation highlights very different revenue generating companies that have one common focus- growing companies with a strong culture. Whether founded in 1986 like Petsmart or 2008 like Muscular Moving Men, growing a company with a great internal culture can be imperative in company growth. The culture of these two companies helped them both succeed and continue to grow through the pandemic as well. We wish the listeners could see the guests picking up their dogs to share with the camera, but the conversation (even without the dogs) is worth listening. Although puppies and kittens are of course a perk of Petsmart, there are other parts of the culture that Dani and Lauren discuss. Petsmart has continued to progress through the pandemic, support their staff through working from home, and continuing to have passion for people and pets. Jennifer and Justin gave insight into the culture of Muscular Moving Men from the beginning and through the pandemic. They have been able to keep a strong family culture, continuing to support the staff through motivation, while keeping the customers accountable and safe as well. Both companies have growth plans for the future that also include doing good for the community as well. Founders Josh Jurhill and Justin Hodge started Muscular Moving Men to be leaders in the moving industry. Arizona natives, initially just local moving company, MMM added long distance moves, storage, commercial moving & storage and this year Junk Removal. Over the last 12 years Muscular Moving Men & Storage has expanded and seen tremendous growth focusing on amazing company culture and advancement. The staff at MMM has grown with the company with most office members initially starting in the field. According to Justin Hodge Co-Founder, “Its important that our entire staff understand how a move works and how important it is we take care of our customers on moving day.”. Fast forward to 2020 MMM has expanded into a 20,000sf warehouse, 20 trucks, a commercial & junk removal division and a staff of around 70 hard working and very talented individuals. A new study from Banfield Pet Hospital® reveals an estimated 75 million pets in the U.S. may not have access to the veterinary care they need by 2030, with an important factor being a critical shortage of veterinarians. Further, with nearly 90% of veterinary professionals identifying as white according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need to not only increase the number of veterinary professionals in the U.S. but also diversify the talent pipeline is critical. Dr. Chumkee Aziz guest hosts this episode of 'the Intake' and interviews Dr. Michael Blackwell of Align Care, a national effort to increase access to care for pets in the United States.

In this episode Deb chats with longtime friend Aislynn Ross about preparing her fur babies for the newborn baby!Aislynn is the owner of Ace of Paws Dog Training based in New Jersey http://www.aceofpawstraining.com/Aislynn has always had a deep love and understanding for animals of all kinds ever since she was a little girl. However, her true intrigue for understanding canine cognition began with the adoption of her first rescue dog Apollo. Apollo was about a year and a half old, and Aislynn quickly found out for the first time what it was like to have a fearful, insecure dog. Apollo was such a sweet, loyal, loving boy to her as his owner. However within a few months of owning him, Apollo started growling and lunging at their guests coming through the front door. Aislynn soon realized this was a severe issue, and needed to be managed as soon as possible. Aislynn felt completely helpless. Every trainer seemed to be thousands of dollars, and she didn't know where to turn. This is the beginning of what sparked her interest in learning as much as she possibly could about dogs, their behavior, and the way they perceive the world around them. At the time Victoria Stilwell's “It's Me Or The Dog” was a popular show on Animal Planet and she began to obsessively watch, and to study her own dog, Apollo's, behaviors. Aislynn began to understand the importance of positive based training vs punitive training, especially when it comes to fearful, insecure dogs. Apollo had many people that loved and helped care for him, but sadly his aggressive behaviors became too severe. Unfortunately, Apollo's story did not end as a happy one. Although heartbroken, Aislynn took that experience and made it her mission to help as many people and pets as possible in Apollo's honor. After a few years Aislynn decided to take the plunge into the veterinary field and learned everything she possibly could to truly make a difference in this world. In 2011 Aislynn began as a receptionist (client service coordinator) at Banfield Pet Hospital in Marlton, NJ and worked as hard as she could to advance her career. Within four months she was promoted to Veterinary Technician (Pet Nurse), and was taught to excel as an exam room technician, phlebotomist, radiology technician, laboratory technician, among many other duties that were required of her. Six months later she was trained in surgical anesthetic monitoring (spays, neuters, dental cleanings) at Banfield Pet Hospital. In August 2012, Aislynn was hired as a veterinary technician at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, and rapidly learned how fast paced an emergency animal hospital could be. It was at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital she learned true quality care should always be a priority. She learned about emergency care, pet CPR, extensive surgical monitoring, in patient care, & how to truly help clients through some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Most importantly, for her passion of animal behavior, she learned about proper restraint with pets in small confined spaces, and how to really be able to read body language efficiently in high pressure situations. In 2013 Aislynn began Penn Foster Career School's Dog Obedience Trainer program. Then in June 2014 she decided to take a risk and start up her own company for the first time ever, thus Ace Of Paws was born. July 2014 Aislynn decided to focus 100% of her time to Ace Of Paws, which unfortunately meant leaving the job she loved very much at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. Luckily, the owners and staff at Mount Laurel are kind, compassionate, supportive people, and still to this day Aislynn has a great working relationship with them. In October 2014 Aislynn completed her first program in the dog trainer field and was now a Certified Dog Obedience Trainer/Instructor through Penn Foster Career School. Although Penn Foster's program taught her about the use of all dog training tools and methods, Aislynn decided it was her duty to educate dog owners about the large benefits of earning their dogs trust, and the importance of having a positive based training experience together.. Aislynn has always believed in kindness, and treating others the way you would like to be treated. So she thought "Why would I run my business any differently?" For many years, Aislynn was told by many people that she would not get anywhere by training dogs solely positive based. Luckily deep down she knew there had to be a better way then “forcing a dog into submission” or pretending to be their “alpha”. Aislynn's goal from the beginning has been to build an entire team of like-minded individuals who truly value the bond between canine & human, and to genuinely help as many dogs and families as she can. Our mission is to educate owners, rescues, and the animal world about the importance, benefit, and the necessity of doing positive based training with their beloved companion. Aislynn is a proud member of The Pet Professional Guild, The Association For Force-Free Professionals, is a volunteer for Don't Bully Us Rescue, and is currently enrolled in CATCH Canine Trainer Academy's Master Class. Once her program is completed Aislynn will become a CATCH Certified Behavior Consultant, and will be able to take on more challenging cases as a whole. As of present day, Aislynn is a proud mommy to her new beautiful rescue girl Twixie (from Don't Bully Us Rescue). Unfortunately in December 2018 Coorise girl lost her battle with Canine Lymphoma & in November 2019 Evie girl passed away due to liver cancer. Hosted on Acast. How The Pet Industry Adapted During COVID

2020 has been a strange year. Many people coped with the loneliness and uncertainty of lockdowns and quarantines by adding a furry friend to the family. Pet ownership is way up because of the pandemic and has caused the pet industry to pivot and adapt.  As the number of customers has greatly increased, the pet industry has also had to deal with pandemic restrictions and changing health regulations. The only way to survive has been to stay close to customers, adopt digital solutions and pivot.  Brian Garish, president of Banfield Pet Hospital, said that although the way of doing business is now different, the company's focus is still on building connections with pets and keeping its associates healthy while they continue to give care.  As an essential business, Banfield Hospitals has stayed open throughout the pandemic, but the store had to create new measures to keep associates, pets and clients safe. One of its major changes was introducing curbside dropoff for pets. Instead of owners walking their pets into the store, they now drop them off at the curb where a Banfield associate takes the pet into the hospital to perform the procedure and then brings them back when they are done. To help customers feel comfortable leaving their pets, Banfield built on its trustworthy reputation and increased its communication so that customers are still involved in every step of the process.  One of the most crucial aspects of pivoting during COVID has been digital transformation. Banfield was already working on a digital transformation, but it was greatly accelerated by the pandemic. Now, clients can schedule services and access their pet's records online. Everything can be done through an online portal or app to remove concerns and make clients' lives easier and simpler.  The move to digital transformation helps both clients and associates, which then leads to a better experience for the pets. Instead of being weighed down by paperwork, Banfield associates can upload notes digitally to keep owners in the loop. Banfield is also working towards a green initiative to email all paperwork and receipts instead of printing hard copies.  Garish believes Banfield's digital transformation has been effective because it is rooted in empathy. In his mind, strategy without empathy is wasted. To create the most effective digital transformation, Banfield encourages and facilitates conversations with its clients and its associates.  Digital transformation didn't come about because it was a trend or an idea executives had—it came from listening to customers and having true two-way conversations. Banfield aims to be part of its clients' lifestyles, even during a pandemic, but that can't happen without real dialogue. Those conversations have continued during the pandemic as Banfield keeps in continual communication with its clients and associates about what is and isn't working and how care can be improved.  Garish doesn't see the pandemic pivot as temporary. He believes changes made in the last nine months will forever change the company and industry and re-affirm the need to put customers at the center of everything. Instead of a standardized path, customers want individual attention.  The pandemic won't last forever, but the lasting effects of increased pet ownership will definitely stick around, and Banfield will be there every step of the way. Great brands are defined as much by what they choose NOT to do as by what they choose to do. Having clear guardrails on the brand and being very specific about what actions and communications happen in the market can prevent ‘brand drag.” This is true for your personal brand as well. Exhibiting behavior and making decisions that are not thoughtful drag you off from your core brand values and create drag that gets in the way of the intentional actions that should be amplified to move your brand forward. Jayzen is thrilled to welcome the president of Banfield Pet Hospitals, Brian Garish, to the show. Brian joined Banfield in 2015 as chief operating officer, bringing more than 20 years of healthcare leadership to the organization. He is passionate about the inclusive culture at Banfield and takes a unique approach to communicating with his workforce, using Instagram as the primary tool. Guest Bio As president of the industry’s leading provider of preventive care, Brian’s top priority is creating a high-performing, inclusive culture at Banfield Pet Hospital’s 1,000+ hospitals for its 19,000+ associates across the country. Since taking over as president in 2017, Banfield has achieved the lowest turnover in its history while simultaneously growing four times faster than the broader veterinary industry. Brian believes that pets, people and society are all connected and is passionate about ensuring Banfield is making a positive impact on the world at large. This philosophy can be seen in the launch of the company’s Student Debt Relief Program, making Banfield one of only four percent of organizations offering such a benefit. To date the program has contributed over $8M to pay-off debt for veterinary professionals while helping to refinance more than $14M in student loans. In addition, Banfield recently launched the industry’s first mental health training to combat compassion fatigue for veterinary professionals as part of its holistic commitment to the health and wellbeing of all Banfield associates. Beginning his career stocking store shelves at Walgreens, Brian has never sat in a corner office or followed a traditional trajectory. This unique path has pushed him to think differently about leadership, redefining what it means to be a leader. Brian is committed to ensuring the voice of Banfield’s associates dictates the vision of the organization. With over 75% of Banfield’s workforce being Millennial or Gen Z, Brian connects directly with associates on Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter to listen, engage and transform the organization. Brian holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Indiana University. He serves on the board of several nonprofits, including Metropolitan Family Services, Columbia River Economic Development Council and the Banfield Foundation as well as serving as Board Chair-elect for Classic Wines Auction. Brian Garish leads Banfield Pet Hospitals. One of the Mars family of businesses (think M&Ms), the pet care industry is booming. More pets today than ever before are leading to a major shortage of veterinarians. And the Millennial generation, per Brian, is much more interested in pet preventative health care than previous generations of pet owners which requires more vet visits and better foods. We talk pets, vets, compassion fatigue, and the future of pet care. Plus a Mardi Gras commentary from David Webb.

Just like baby names, pet names are often inspired by current pop culture.  According to data collected by Banfield Pet Hospitals, character names from the Marvel movies were super influential this year.  Marvel fans gave their pets names like Storm, Wolverine, Drax, Groot, Rocket, and Loki.   Among some more creative names for dogs are TwaiSherlock Bones, Bark Twain, Chewbarka, Droolius Ceasar and Winnie the Poodle. In the United States, the most popular names for dogs are Charlie, Coco, Daisy, Bailey, Lola Molly, and Sadie.  Cuttycrumb is an old Scots word for the sound of a purring cat.  And when your dog or cat curls up in a ball to sleep, that’s called a  kreesal, a word used to describe an untidy bundle of clothes. What’s a word for smelling something by sticking your nose in it like a dog?  Snowking.

Did you know that the changing of seasons may require a change in your pet’s diet? As we transition from summer to fall and winter, this is an important topic to discuss. Many of us believe that our pet’s diet only needs to change as they age (for example, from puppyhood to adulthood and again when they become a senior). In fact, there are many reasons why your pet’s diet may need to be altered. This week I was able to have an email exchange with Dr. Jeff Werber, a veterinarian and spokesperson for Mars Petcare. Mars is one of the leading companies in the world when it comes to pet care and pet products. Their brands include world leaders like Banfield Pet Hospital, IAMS, EUKANUBA, Pedigree and Nutro. Dr. Werber spoke to me about how the change in seasons can affect your pet’s dietary needs as well as the current pet obesity epidemic. In this week’s solo podcast that I'm doing by myself you’ll learn about the dietary needs of pets in every season and the importance of consulting with your veterinarian before making any changes to your Fido’s diet. I’ll also be discussing some of the most important things to look for (and stay away from) when shopping for a commercial pet food diet.

As Americans we spend more on our pets than on candy, toys and jewelry. We spend more on our pets than the combined revenues from Hollywood's motion pictures, video games, and recorded music. If pet spending in the U.S. were a country, it would be the 65 largest in the world. America is in love with its pets, no matter if they have fur, feathers, fins or scales. We dress them up. Purchase designer diets. They don't spend the day locked in the backyard -- oh no, not our babies. They have nannies. Which car we purchase is often predicated on which one best will transport our lovelies from day care to play dates. With all of this pampering you would surmise that they would be some of the healthiest critters on the globe. Alas, this is far from true. Banfield Pet Hospitals, the largest general veterinary practice network in the world analyzed their extensive data base to compile the first ever look at the state of pet health in the United States. Their findings may shock you. I have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Harry Smith. More details on this episode MP3 Podcast - How Healthy are America's Pets on Pet Life Radio.
