Lamar Shambley takes us on his journey growing up in the housing projects of Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and reflects on the impact hip hop music had on him growing up. He shares the origins of his interest in languages and cultures, and how he was able to overcome financial barriers to take his first international trip to the Dominican Republic. Lamar reflects on the many layers of impact that trip had, and then talks about his experience studying abroad in Spain and being fully immersed in foreign culture for 6 months. He then takes us on some of his world travels through Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia, and how all of that inspired him to teach young people and empower them to learn languages through travel and immersion. Lamar explains how underrepresented Black students are in study abroad programs today and how his former students inspired him to found “Teens of Color Abroad” (TOCA). He then shares how his pivot during the pandemic to virtual language learning with native speakers enabled his students to learn languages directly from refugees and to develop cultural empathy for their lived experiences at the same time. Matt and Lamar reflect on the global impact of hip hop music and how Lamar arranges international DJ sets and cooking classes as part of the (virtual) global cultural immersion in the TOCA program. Lamar reflects on the impact TOCA has had on his students thus far, and shares how listeners can support TOCA. FULL SHOW NOTES AVAILABLE AT www.TheMaverickShow.com

In this episode of Brooklyn Legacy, Laz recounts his memories of the infamous Decepticons, and their "Cybertron" headquarters. This is a boots-on-the-ground tale, not the misinformation you'll get from the corporate media.Watch Part 1 HERE & Part 2 HEREListen to Laz's Hip-Hop podcast The Super Facts Show here.Follow St. Laz on Instagram here.Listen to St. Laz music here. From Wikipedia: "The Decepticons were a street gang or street organization that thrived from the late 80s through the early 90s. Their members were teenagers and young adults ranging from the age of 15 to their early 20s. The gang was most prominent in Brooklyn, but at their peak, the group consisted of multiple branches, or legions, all across New York City. In an interview with former Decepticon "General Steele", it is mentioned that there were legions of Decepticons in Clinton Hills, Flatbush, East Flatbush, and Bed Stuy Brooklyn, Harlem, Manhattan, and parts of Queens. Steele references in his interview how the Decepticons were all over the place in patches due to the group's upbringing. The legions would initially begin as a formation of a bond of bullied kids who needed strength in numbers. The original group of Decepticons started in Brooklyn, New York with three boys from two different schools. Two of the boys, who went by the names of Cyclonis and Rumble, went to Bushwick High School, and the other, called Megatron, went to Brooklyn Technical High School. They formed their bond in order to make sure no one would harm them. As those founding fathers found more people with common mindsets in the two schools they went to, their numbers grew, and soon after their small group morphed into a feared gang."

In this episode we’re talking to Fatima Jones, who I check in with almost weekly, getting a read on everything from the Black cultural landscape and how to keep my proverbial wig on straight when folks try us (you know how that goes), to understanding how to make the marketing and communications of our Black arts spaces sing, and whose family I love love love. We had the honor and privilege to talk with comedian, actor, producer Tony Rock. Tony's success is attributed to growing up in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn and having a large family. Being in a house with so many siblings gave way to his confidence and competitive nature, which he now uses in boardrooms and on stage. Tony states that establishing your own voice is vital to your success and personal development. He is also a firm believer in seperating yourself from the competition by committing to your values and staying true to who. Listen in as Tony Rock shares how he has been able to move through the entertainment world without compromising himself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leadup/support
