This is Ian's second visit to the podcast, his first being #92 with Lanier Ash earlier this year. In this inspiring episode of The Renaissance Podcast, we sit down with Sherry Stewart Deutschmann, a serial entrepreneur, author, and advocate for women in business. Sherry's journey is nothing short of extraordinary—she moved to Nashville in the 90s as a 25-year-old single mother with just $200 to her name, determined to build a better life for herself and her daughter.Sherry opens up about her early life, growing up in a strict Jehovah's Witness community in Beech Mountain, North Carolina, and her courageous decision to leave that life behind. Married at 18, she eventually found herself in Nashville, navigating the challenges of single motherhood, struggling to keep the lights on, and working odd jobs—including cleaning gas station toilets—to make ends meet in her new life. But Sherry's story doesn't stop there. In 2002, she founded LetterLogic, Inc., a company she grew to $40 million in revenue before selling it in 2016. Sherry attributes her success to a unique business model centered on empathy and putting employees first—even ahead of customers and shareholders. This unconventional approach led to LetterLogic being named an Inc. 5000 company for ten consecutive years and earned Sherry national recognition, including being honored by President Barack Obama as a White House Champion of Change. In her bestselling book, Lunch with Lucy: Maximize Profits by Investing in Your People, Sherry details how she cultivated a company culture where every employee had a voice. Through her practice of "Lunch with Lucy," Sherry created a judgment-free environment where she could learn from her team, leading to insights that fueled the company's success.Join us as Sherry shares her incredible journey, the lessons she learned along the way, and how empathy and transformational leadership can lead to both personal and professional triumph. Whether you're an entrepreneur, a leader, or someone looking for inspiration, this episode is a must-listen!Learn more about Sherry: https://sherrydeutschmann.com/Learn more about BrainTrust: https://ourbraintrust.org/Support the Show.About Renaissance Marketing Group: Renaissance Marketing Group is a full-service social media marketing agency based in Nashville. We all seem to be waiting for a "sci-fi" moment in our lives. Can we see what we don't believe? Can our attention be farmed? Can we see the color blue!? What will we manifest now that we are deeply questioning reality? We live in a hyper-reality of hallucinated information transposed by what's important for our survival. We commission a hallucination and show ourselves for tactical purposes. The eyes are a stage the mind palace uses to play a scene. Our real-world is received through the pineal needle in the center of our head. Our senses are here to only show us a reality our system can stomach. All of our vision and hearing is restricted by melanin, dopamine, and the emotional filters of the amygdala. Just as truth is suppressed in society, so is it suppressed by our amygdala. It is trying to protect us. This is how we come to learn about aperture. Aperture is the lensing of consciousness. A well-timed artic blast is settling into the mountains of Northwest North Carolina! While some may dream of warmer conditions, ski and snowboard enthusiasts could not have planned for a shot of cold air to come at a better time. The cold temperatures and snowfall help promote North Carolina's winter sports industry. Skiers and snowboarders flock to the mountains during the holidays, and the resorts that welcome these visitors provide the backbone for memorable experiences. On this week's Mind Your Business, we visit with Talia Freeman, Director of Marketing for Beech Mountain Resort. She discusses a full slate of events planned for Beech Mountain over the next few weeks, while also sharing how these resorts collectively work to make the North Carolina Mountains a desired destination for outdoor enthusiasts at such an important time of year.Mind your Business is produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. The radio show airs each Thursday morning at 10:05AM on WATA (1450AM/96.5FM) in the High Country. For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/vCT6XDpUKzY The Land of Oz is now owned and operated by the Leidy family with the artistic direction of Sean Barrett. While Land of Oz is not a fully functioning theme park, it offers many public events that celebrate the magic and legacy of all things Oz, including the 29th Annual Autumn at Oz Festival which just ran for three weekends this September. Here about my own adventures in Oz when I was a kid in Conway, SC! The former Land of Oz theme park that operated during the 1970s atop Beech Mountain reopens occasionally for us to follow the Yellow Brick Road to Emerald City to see the Wizard. Over the years, Autumn at Oz (photos on this page) has grown from a small reunion of former employees to a celebration that draws huge crowds for a nostalgic stroll through the remains of the popular Land of Oz theme park that closed in 1980. It was a living adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic novel, “The Wonderful World of Oz,” upon which the 1939 film is based (celebrating its 80th anniversary!). The park atop the mile-high summit reopens only for two special events. Beech Mountain is about 80 miles north of Asheville. A lifelong fan of the Wizard of Oz, Sean's history with the Land of Oz spans over 20 years, where he began working at the Autumn at Oz Festival as the Scarecrow at the age of 15 from 2001-2014. He now is the artistic director and executive producer for the festival, which has grown from a 2-day event to 3 weekends in recent years. Other credentials include The Oz Project, a music video combining music from The Wiz and Wizard of Oz for Playbill.com featuring an all Broadway cast.

James True has delved deeply into the engineered psyche of our species that is presently leading large swaths of the human collective in march-step precariously close to the cliff's edge. An eclectic in the truest sense, part author-poet, wildlife activist & self-taught techie, whichever endeavor catches James interest is most definitely guided by the cosmic muse. In James provocative work Blueprints for Mind Control he accurately concludes awareness to be the only possible antidote for the induced maya of the controllers. Be certain that we'll dissect the tools of the spellcraft trade, but central to our roundtable is that our mass-trauma is a 100% perception-based ailment. The mountains of North Carolina offer some unexpected treats for skiers and snowboarders. Snowmaking capabilities are outstanding and allow for a constant supply of fresh snow and great conditions. They emphasize family skiing, with a good mix of beginner runs to get first timers interested in the sport, and more advanced trails and surprisingly good vertical to provide ample stoke for even the most experienced skiers and riders. In this episode I turn my attention to Beech Mountain Ski Resort, known as the highest-elevated outdoor adventure destination east of the Rocky Mountains. I sat down with Talia Freeman who is the Director of Marketing for Beech Mountain Resort, and we discuss what gives Beech its unique vibe that sets it apart…and keeps season pass holders and first timers coming back year after year.We talk about the Resort's great mix of runs for all levels, state-of-the-art snowmaking capabilities, upgrades to the Village including beautifully constructed fire pits & seating areas near the Beech Mountain Brewing Company, and 5506 the slope-side Skybar at the Peak of Beach Mountain. We also talk about the community of Beech Mountain, specially themed events like 80's weekend & Runs for Buns, a unique co-op degree program with Lees-McRae College, and après-ski opportunities that allow guests to enjoy Beech from the first chair to last call. And, just when you think it couldn't get any better, we talk about how Beech Mountain Resort continues to deliver in the summer with downhill mountain biking, lift rides to the Skybar, and the summer concert series that delivers big entertainment for the whole family every summer.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODETalia L. For more than a hundred years, folklorists and other scholars have been visiting the community of Beech Mountain, North Carolina. Perhaps the most prolific collector of the community’s music and stories was himself a native of Old Beech. In the 1960s, Jack Guy began selling mountain handcrafts and folk toys to tourists, helping local artists make a living through their heritage crafts. He operated his business out of a small log cabin, selling classic mountain toys like limberjacks and gee-haw-whimmy-diddles, alongside many other items, including musical instruments made by renowned local luthiers. And while he was at it, Jack created a venue for Beech Mountain’s musicians to perform, share their music, and be recorded for posterity. He hosted many concerts and informal jams at the shop, featuring great local bands, solo musicians, and storytellers. As they performed, Jack was often at work in the background recording the music on his reel-to-reel tape recorder. He created an enormous archive of Beech Mountain music and folklore. Soon you’ll be able to visit the North Carolina Folklife Institute’s website, ncfolk.org, to listen to more than 100 audio tapes of mountain music, accompanied by hundreds of old photos of life on Beech Mountain, recordings and stories by the artists who carry on Beech Mountain’s traditions today.

Our friends at All Saints Chapel in Downtown Raleigh are hosting the All Saints Day Wedding Marketplace on Thursday, November 1st. Vendors and past brides will be selling items at a discounted rate. It will be like a Facebook marketplace, in person! Pop-up shop style. A $10 VIP ticket gets you a swag bag and early access to shop from 6-7pm. General admission is free, with access from 7-9pm. Don't miss out! Tickets are available on Eventbrite right here. If you're a wedding vendor, go get Honeybook! At A Southern Soiree, we’ve been using Honeybook since February 2015. I think we were one of their very first clients, and it has truly been a life changer. They make proposals and contracts super easy to use on both our side and the client side. I think before Honeybook I would send proposals and contracts by email, and the client would have to mail the contract to us or fax it by efax. Proposals were in no way streamlined either, so this has made our lives so much better. As a consultant, whenever I sign up a vendor client, one of the very first recommendations I make is Honeybook. No need to complicate things – it works, it’s great…just get it. And if you follow this link, you get 50% off your first year of Honeybook, which is nice, but not nearly as nice as all the time you’re going to save. And if you have any questions about my experience, feel free to send me an email to megan@weddingsforreal.com. Music for this episode by https://www.bensound.com. Ray Hicks grew up on a hardscrabble mountain farm on Beech Mountain. From his grandfather, young Hicks learned a dozen Jack tales, part of the rich storytelling tradition of the Appalachians. Standing nearly seven feet tall and illustrating his stories with animated expressions and gestures, Hicks was naturally engaging teller of tales. Alan Lomax once called him “the greatest of all American folktale tellers.” Ray Hicks received the National Heritage Award in 1983.

In 1938, Frank Proffitt of Beech Mountain recorded the song “Tom Dooley.” The murder ballad tells the true-life tale of a Civil War love triangle that ended in the death of a young Wilkes County, N.C., woman named Laura Foster, and the hanging of Tom Dula for her murder.Twenty years later, the Kingston Trio recorded their own version, helping launch the Folk Revival of the 1960s. The album sold more than 3 million copies. Soon people all across the country were singing this song from the North Carolina hills.
