IT WAS A little after 6 a.m. on June 14, 1907. Dawn was just brightening the decks of the passenger steamer Alliance, docked at the pier in Astoria, when John Bowlsby saw his prey step aboard. He fingered the big .44 in his pocket and tried to stay out of sight, waiting for a chance to make his move. His chance came almost immediately. The marked man was moving away from the crowd of people, and soon he stood in a spot where Bowlsby felt he could get in a good shot without risking hitting any bystanders. Carefully he steadied the big revolver against the side of a deckhouse — and pulled the trigger. Bowlsby's target, a fellow North Bend man named Cleve Jennings, died in a hospital eight hours later. Meanwhile, with his head held high, a triumphant John Bowlsby quietly submitted to arrest and handed over his revolver. Hard as it is for a modern person to believe, this cold-blooded assassination met with widespread approval. It was about as close to a pure example of “The Unwritten Law” in action as Oregon would ever see. “It was the outcome of one man alienating the affections of another man's wife and was the result of a manhunt in which the hunter finally found his game,” wrote the Morning Oregonian's Astoria correspondent the next day. Jones, of Iowa City, entered the building to confront the principal about sending his son home from school. Staff told police he entered the main office and demanded to see the principal. He threatened to assault the principal and another staff member who tried to de-escalate the situationJones had a handgun on his hip and proceeded to hand it to his girlfriend, who had come into the school with him, saying something along the lines of “hold this so I don't do something stupid with it,” the complaint states. She took the gun outside.Jones then went into the school hallway, against protests of staff, and began looking for the principal. When staff told him they were calling the police, he went outside where he took the gun back from his girlfriend before being stopped by police, according to the complaint.Jones faces one count if carrying weapons on school grounds, a Class D felony, and two counts of first-degree harassment, both aggravated misdemeanors.During the incident, the building was placed on hold, which means classroom doors were closed and locked, and no one was allowed in the hallway or around the building. Inducted into UNI's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004, Bowlsby currently is serving on the steering committee for UNI's $250 million “Our Tomorrow” fundraising campaign.“Very few opportunities could have lured me out of retirement, even on a short-term basis,” the 71-year-old Bowlsby, currently living in Dallas, said in a statement Wednesday. “Plenty of people have contacted me, but when President Nook called I certainly listened intently.”After starting in the Northern Iowa athletics department Bowlsby served for 16 years as the athletics director for the University of Iowa.Bowlsby was appointed Big 12 Conference commissioner in 2012, overseeing the addition of BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati and Houston to the conference.
Bob Bowlsby was re-introduced at Northern Iowa on Wednesday as the school's interim Athletic Director. A recent inductee into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American, Bowlsby recently retired as the commissioner of the Big 12 Conference. Bowlsby's first job as an AD came at UNI where he'd worked with the department previous to his promotion to the role. He then left to take the reins at the University of Iowa before finishing the first run of his AD career at Stanford. Bowlsby fielded questions from the media on Wednesday as he was re-introduced to the Cedar Valley. Locked On Big 12 - Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast
When Texas and Oklahoma announced their departure from the Big 12 before the 2025 football season, it left the league with two options: either expand or face collapse. On Friday, the Big 12 decisively chose expansion, welcoming UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, and Houston as the newest members of the conference. Notably, the vote was unanimous among the remaining eight members.Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby remarked, "Having a united board made this process much smoother. Our board was incredibly supportive and aligned throughout, making the decision on which four schools to bring in quite straightforward."Examining the new additions, Bowlsby's statement holds true. The "new" Big 12 now encompasses approximately 200,000 students, with UCF alone contributing nearly 72,000. BYU brings one of the nation's most prominent athletic brands, while Houston boasts a rich tradition, with recent appearances in the New Year's Six bowl games and the men's basketball Final Four. Additionally, Cincinnati, a top-10 football team in 2021, adds a strong basketball legacy to the conference.Bowlsby's choice of words also suggests an acknowledgment that working with the leadership in this newly configured conference will likely be far less challenging than dealing with the outgoing members. This underscores that the new Big 12 will have a significantly different structure compared to its current iteration.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!NutrafolTake the first step to visibly thicker, healthier hair. For the first time, Big 12 Media Days opened with two commissioners at the podium. Brett Yormark, who starts the job on Aug. 1, shared the stage with outgoing boss Bob Bowlsby. On today's SportsBeat KC, you'll hear from both. Yormark provides his vision for the Big 12, and obviously the outlook is changing with the recent realgnment shuffle that is sending USC and UCLA from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten in 2024. Add navigating the Big 12 through the latest choppy waters to the to-do list, topped by landing the league's new TV package. Bowlsby has been through it all in his decade as Big 12 boss. He opened up to reporters about the state of college sports, the successes of the league, and offered a surprising regret, or disappointment. Locked On Baylor - Daily Podcast On Baylor Bears Football & Basketball
According to Wilton Jackson of Sports Illustrated, and as written in his report here (https://studio.youtube.com/channel/UCy_stISxa-9rQQji4-u1eFg/videos/upload?d=ud&filter=%5B%5D&sort=%7B%22columnType%22%3A%22date%22%2C%22sortOrder%22%3A%22DESCENDING%22%7D), Big 12 officially announced the hiring of Brett Yormark as the fifth commissioner of the conference on Wednesday. The decision was announced by the league's board of directors. Yormark comes to the league after spending three years at Jay-Z's Roc Nation serving as the COO and co-CEO of Roc Nation Unified, the commercial side of the business. He replaces former Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who stepped down from his role after 10 years in April. Bowlsby had previously been the longest-tenured person in a commissioner's role in a Power 5 conference. Yormark has worked with countless artists, athletes, leagues, teams, brands as well as oversaw sponsorship, licensing, content partnerships and brand strategy. These key elements are important as Yormark now joins the college football landscape, one that is dominated by name, image and likeness and an unstable terrain in which the NCAA's Power 5 conferences are “seeking to have more legislative power” and the “ability to shape rules and even enforce policy on their own,” as SI's Ross Dellenger and Pat Forde wrote this week. The 55-year-old Yormark said he is eager to “listen, learn, find ways to add value, add resources and try to help shine light” on college sports. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Without a doubt, the single most valuable day to give to MSUM is Giving Day...which is October 28th. Why you ask? Because a $25,000 matching gift from Bob & Candice Bowlsby doubling your gift AND $10,000 in "high-fives" will be split up between the sports based on how many donations over $5 (a "high-five", get it) they receive. So...$5 could help your team earn a larger share of the $10,000 and will at least be doubled by the Bowlsby's. Breaking all that down, how to give, and more is MSUM Foundation's Cindy Bailey joining the MSUM Dragons Podcast. **HINT** - You can donate by CLICKING HERE

The ROADMAP: 1:27 - The Big 12 Cease & Desist. It's not everyday that a Conference Commissioner threatens to sue a sports media behemoth… oh wait that's never happened. The Big 12's Bob Bowlsby went scorched earth on ESPN threatening to sue them for “Tortious Interference” for their alleged role in helping schools bolt the conference to go elsewhere and thereby breach their conference contracts. Bowlsby claims he has concrete evidence to show that ESPN got caught with their hand in the cookie jar and is sending a very LOUD message that he'll go after anyone that threatens his conference. We discuss who might be next on Bowlsby's hit list and what happens legally if the conference disintegrates. Then the question is what happens to the rest of the college sports landscape with conference realignment on the horizon and looming mega negotiations in this game of school musical chairs. We walk through the various trademark filings by: an apparent NY squatter, by the Indians (in the country of Mauritis???) and then by the Roller Derby Guardians (interestingly after the Indians' announcement). Josh then analyzes Roller Derby's first-use argument and why the Indians might actually have a losing trademark case; the overall impact of new Roller Derby merchandise, and their post-announcement use of the website/social. We also debate the looming “abandonment” question as to whether Roller Derby gave up the mark due to inactivity during the pandemic. Moving forward, we discuss settlement talks and how much it should cost Baseball to take the website, social media, and the trademark free and clear. Josh Gerben (@JoshGerben), Intellectual Property Attorney, is our special guest this week as he joins the show to discuss all things Cleveland Guardians. This is truly a story without any historical comparison so we'll take all the help we can get as we continue to provide breaking news on what appears to be an absolutely colossal mistake by a billion dollar baseball team. Again, our free legal advice is to suck it up and pay the roller derby team to end this embarrassing story. Note, this podcast is NOT sponsored by the Cleveland Guardians... but it should be... What's given rise to playoff expansion apprehension? Who has their feet on the breaks? Bob Bowlsby and the Big 12 have declared war on ESPN. Why did Bowlsby accuse ESPN of tampering with the Big 12? Ross Peterson is back from his trip to Wrigley Field and after filling Chris Williams, Erick Zamora and the audience in on how that went the guys get into the latest of Bob Bowlsby's tactics, development of the Big 12 and college athletics in general. Chris breaks that it is being reported Max Scherzer is being dealt to the San Diego Padres but Zamora, the resident Dodgers fan, explains why he's ok that LA lost out on Scherzer. Then Jay Jordan joins the program to chat about what is going on with the Big 12 and college athletics.
In a stunning development, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has outlined for everyone just how ESPN orchestrated, along with OU and Texas, their departure from the Big 12. And it's deeper than that. Bowlsby says he has irrefutable evidence ESPN is courting at least one other school and working with another conference to take 3-5 of the remaining eight. There's about $1.2billion at stake over the next four years and it feels like this dirty and awkward crisis is just getting started. Thursday, it's expected SEC Presidents will vote 14-0 for OU and Texas to join their league.
Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby just continues to hammer away on behalf of the remaining 8 schools in the Big 12. After his cease and desist letter to ESPN, Bowlsby now says the AAC is trying to lure all 8. This should embolden the schools as they ramp up the rhetoric that their 99 year agreement with OU and Texas is a legal juggernaut. Patrick Mahomes didn't take long at Chiefs camp to fire off a no-looker and make national news. This one was an absolute beauty and stunned a pair of Chiefs defender, including the linebacker he totally faked out. Aaron Rodgers was a winner in a different way as he held the best news conference by any athlete in a long time. We certain he won back a ton of Packers fans and it's clear he's a very smart man. And every dem everywhere is implementing a new mask mandate. They're all different depending on where you live and they are getting major pushback. Mayor Q and Governor Kelly's mandates are silly and just political. While Joe Biden's for all federal employees has already received a response from postal workers who said they will not follow it. Hysterical.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby said he would have loved nothing better than to end the COVID-19 pandemic conversation and speak only to this football season. But the latest spike in numbers didn't allow for that. So football and virus precautions were the primary topics on Big 12 Media Days on Wednesday. You'll hear from Bowlsby on today's SportsBeat KC, also from Kansas State beat writer Kellis Robinett and Wildcats football Coach Chris Klieman on various topics. K-State looks to upgrade its receiving corps and improve its defense from last year's 4-6 team that scored one of the season's crazy's outcomes when it defeated Oklahoma by scoring the game's final 24 points. The College Football landscape is set to undergo a lot of changes in the coming years. Not only will student-athletes be eligible to profit off of their name, image and likeness, the College Football Playoff is also heading towards change with the looming 12-team expansion model likely to go into effect in the next few years. On this week's interview edition of The Flagship Podcast, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby joins the show for an exclusive discussion about the pending changes headed towards college athletics. Bowlsby, who was one of the four members of the Division I working group who came up with the 12-team expanded playoff model, goes in depth on the behind the scenes discussions he and his colleagues had while formulating the new playoff model and what this means for all conferences. Bowlsby weighs in on how this change will enhance the regular season schedule, particularly due to the fact that more teams will still be in contention for a College Football Playoff spot late in the season, which is not always the case with the current four-team CFP structure. Bowlsby talks about how this model will impact independent teams, like Notre Dame, and why the few independent programs may be on the negative side of the decision to expand to the 12-team model. The Big 12 Commissioner also discusses the new name, image and likeness legislation set to begin in some states starting July 1. Bowlsby gives his opinion on how NIL laws will impact student-athletes and predicts the NCAA will in fact come up with some regulations prior to the July 1 start date after spending the last 20 months hesitating to take initiative on the NIL concept. In addition to an overall look at the changes headed to college football, Bowlsby weighs in on the Big 12 Conference teams and if the College Football Playoff changes will alter the league's current regular-season scheduling. In 2015, poor control of my diabetes left me legally blind for the better part of a year. The doctors predicted an 80% chance I would never see again, but I changed the way I was living and through sheer willpower beat the odds. During this time I couldn't read or write. Two things that I had been turning to for comfort since I was a small child. With the sheer amount of stress I was under, this was devastating. My wife took me by the arm, lead me into the local library, and read out titles of audiobooks to me. I chose the audiobook versions of books I had loved such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more. They brought my favorite stories to life in ways I never thought possible and helped me through the darkest time of my life. Once my vision recovered, I maintained a love for audiobooks. I decided I would turn my focus from being a writer to becoming a narrator. I devised Tall Tale TV as a way to help out all the amazing authors in the writing communities I had come to love before my ordeal. I created Tall Tale TV to help aspiring authors by providing them with a promotional audiobook video. A way to showcase their skills with the written word. Chase Thomas is joined by fellow UNG alumni Matt Green to talk about BYU's big opening win on the road at Navy, what this might mean for future big-time games, Bob Bowlsby speaking about COVID-19's future in college football and beyond, and make their picks for Week 2 in the college football season.
While the start of the 2020 college football season remains up in the air, many administrators across the country seem to be gaining confidence for the potential of the season beginning as scheduled. Among those administrators is Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. The Big 12 Commissioner's original stance on the matter seemed less than positive a month or so ago, but as states have begun to reopen after being shut down for weeks to help flatten the COVID-19 curve, Bowlsby's tone has changed to a more positive one when he told reporters he is "bullish" that the season will begin around Labor Day, as it is currently planned after the spring Big 12 meetings between conference officials and athletic directors wrapped up late last week. In this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes open the show with some of the latest headlines over the last week, including the latest coming out of Big 12 spring meetings and how the recent comments by the league's commissioner should be viewed as a positive step in the right direction leading up to the start of the college football season, Tom Herman's response to racial injustice and breaking down the 2020 Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year in Texas guard Andrew Jones. The Flagship then welcomes in a very special guest this week in University of Texas Vice President of Diversity and Engagement Dr. Leonard Moore, who works on a consistent basis with Texas student-athletes and very closely with the Longhorns' football players. Dr. Moore addresses the response to the tragic death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer, his thoughts on the statements college coaches across the country are making in the aftermath of the tragedy and his message in working with student-athletes at the University of Texas. Chip and Taylor then kickoff the 'Love it or Leave it' segment, as this week's topics include former Texas QB Shane Buechele landing on the cover of Dave Campbell Texas Football Magazine one year after Sam Ehlinger, the Longhorns once again going to the Australian Prockick Academy for punters after landing the commitment of Isaac Pearson, if Andrew Jones was the most deserving of the 2020 Sportsperson of the Year Award and Matthew McConaughey's impact as an investor in the new Texas basketball arena. The Flagship Podcast — featuring co-hosts Chip Brown and Taylor Estes with Horns247 publisher Bobby Burton as a frequent contributor — hits the airwaves each Wednesday, and centers around all the latest happenings surrounding the University of Texas and college athletics, with big-name guests joining the show on a weekly basis. One of the most respected athletic administrators in the country, Mr. Bowlsby was the director of athletics at Northern Iowa, Iowa and Stanford. In 2012, he was named Commissioner of the Big 12 Conference. During his tenure with the Big 12, he negotiated one of the most lucrative television deals in college athletics history and was a integral in the formation of the College Football Playoff. He’s also served on the US Olympic Committee, as Chairs of the NCAA Wrestling and Basketball Committees and as president of the NCAA Division I-A Athletics Directors’ Association. A native of Waterloo, Iowa, he attended Minnesota State University at Moorhead where he was a 4-year letter winner in wrestling, team captain and conference champion. Let's connect: Website | Facebook | Twitter About Your Host Jim Harshaw My name is Jim Harshaw. And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re at the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach and former Division I All American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes reach their full potential by getting clarity on their what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled and overcome like you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. Here I will teach you, with the help of brilliant minds that have been shaped by failure, struggle and adversity, to be who you want to be. I sense that you want this because you have read this far. Bob Bowlsby's career in athletic administration started after his career on the wrestling mats ended. Bowlsby wrestled at Minnesota State-Moorhead back in his college days and since, he's gone through positions as an Athletics Director at Northern Iowa, Iowa and Stanford. Now the current commissioner of the Big 12 Conference, Bowlsby's been a prominent figure in the discussion regarding athlete payments and the Ed O'Bannon lawsuit. Bowlsby was the Keynote Speaker at the NWCA Convention in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and he shares some of his thoughts on the state of the NCAA and how it impacts college wrestling.Another notable session on Friday was the presentation of a research study conducted by Dr. Amanda Stanec and Dr. Jen Bhalla on the New World of Wrestling. Both are native Canadians who played collegiate soccer in the U.S., and Stanec is the wife of past Cornell All-American Jim Stanec. Their initiative is getting kids active.Find more information about the work done by Stanec and Bhalla at the links below.Dr. Jen BhallaDr. Amanda Stanec at MoveLiveLearn.comIt's all coming up now on episode 87 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast.Short Time is proudly sponsored by FlipsWrestling. “Pedantic Eric” Knight and Windy “Bossy Nova” Bowlsby join us for some podcast time traveling to discuss our mutual new job as the Fearless Comedy Productions‘ Board of Directors (only Cetius is on the Board from XTL, just to be clear) and to promote the company’s fundraiser, Die Laughing, which happens this weekend, April 4-6, 2014. We also discuss Fifth of Fringe, juicy lucies, the North Star Roller Girls, and rape jokes that are actually funny. As if that weren’t enough (although it does explain the runtime), we also drink some scotch…go figure, right? This time, we sample the Caol Ila and Lagavulin Distillers Editions. This is a long one, folks, but well worth the listen. And seriously, if you’re local to the Twin Cities area and are free at all this weekend, come check out Die Laughing at the Airport Hilton–Cetius will be there all weekend.
