What happens when life's pressures tempt us to seek the help of "lesser gods"? In this sermon, we move from the end of 1 Kings to 2 Kings and see how King Jehoshaphat's compromises and King Ahaziah's idolatry led to devastating consequences. But God intervenes in all of our desperate moments to offer opportunities for repentance rather than judgment. Most importantly, we see how Jesus perfectly walks with God where these kings failed. Listen now and be inspired to choose God's voice over the false promises of shortcuts!
In this episode, we dive deep into the creative mind of Eisner Award-winning artist Gideon Kendall, whose diverse career has spanned books, illustrations, comics, and animation for a few outfits you might have heard of: MAD Magazine, Penguin/Putnam, Disney, Comixology/Kitchen Sink, IDW, Dark Horse, Cartoon Network, Scholastic, and The New York Times. Gideon has made significant contributions to both children's and adult comics, earning critical acclaim as the artist of Harvey Kurtzman's Marley's Ghost (which won the 2018 Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic), and as the writer and artist of the sci-fi series WHATZIT published by Heavy Metal. His more recent projects include Eric Powell's Lester of the Lesser Gods, Megaghost with Gabe Soria, the autobiographical anthology series WAIT...It Gets Worse, and his recently released music memoir I Am The Audience. Howard and maybe even Lovecraft. Were there any other classical authors you turned to in constructing the narrative?I've been loving your use of captioning in The Penguin of late, but really all of your captioning shows a strong sense of character and storytelling. Is this something you're conscience of? Are you toying with anything in comics format with Helen of Wyndhorn?I imagine we're in for some creatures in this series, what goes into creature design from your perspective? Last time we spoke you had said Danger Street was done and getting finished, Gotham City Year One was finished, have you scripted every issue of Helen of Wyndhorn?
Welcome back to ARTMATTERS: The Podcast for ArtistsOn today's episode, I speak with the artist Jennifer Coates. In her recent paintings, ancient deities appear like ghosts in the abstracted landscape of rural Pennsylvania. Figures merge with their surroundings as weeds and trees become a site of both Pagan ritual and painterly event. The works hang together like tapestries with a variety of marks slowly accumulating in layers and zones to create a flickering but cohesive whole. Coates is in conversation with art history, engaging Modernist landscapes, Baroque painting, and ancient Roman frescoes. Light effects are amplified and color is intensified, suffusing the paintings with the glow of synthetic chemistry. While oil paint references earth and flesh, Coates's use of acrylic paint speaks to the history of plastics and dyes. Fluorescent paints, colors of safety and warning, are used to heighten the dense, hallucinatory scenes.About Jennifer CoatesJennifer Coates is an artist working in Brooklyn, NY and Lakewood, PA. She is the 2021 recipient of the John Koch Art Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a 2021 NYFA Award in painting, a 2019 Fellowship at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, and a Sharpe Walentas Studio residency (2018-2019) (tel:(2018-2019)). We walk among lesser Gods. We also walk with the God of gods, Yahweh. God created “elohims” like Himself. “Elohim” often becomes misunderstood. It means “a disembodied spirit whose home is the spiritual world.” God is an “elohim” (Gen. 1:1). Demons get called “elohim” (Deut. 32:17). Samuel of the Bible got called “elohim” (1 Sam. … God and the Lesser gods Read More »

"Getting the desires of our hearts is often a punishment or consequence of sinful idolatry, not a blessing. We get what we always wanted, neglecting the God who is the source of all things, and realize even THAT thing did not satisfy."
This Sunday we will hear from Paul words of encouragement given to Timothy and to the church in every place and age, how and for what they are to pray. Pray for those in power and those who submit to the Highest Power, even Christ Jesus who alone is Mediator between God and man. Our prayers for lesser powers are directed to the Higher Power. We do not pray or think of our president or any other early leaders as we do the One who was raised to the exalted-throne of heaven and earth. Praying for those in power reminds us, reminds them and reminds others that they are but, like all things, under the control of Almighty God.

We're down in the hot, sticky swamplands of Bon Temps, Louisiana with Nuchtchas of The Nutty Bites Podcast to discuss True Blood (2008), the sexy vampire soap that HBO apparently forgot about when they announced they were eliminating late night adult programming from its services. Although it's generously considered a drama, True Blood is actually softcore porn, but with vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, fairies, demons, demigods, leprechauns (are there leprechauns? there's probably leprechauns) plus a smattering of Cajuns who we learn are Mel's cousins. (26:35 - 1:57:51) ... The Pacific (2010) is another prestigious WWII mini-series. On August 7, 1942 U.S. Marines land at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands to fight the Japanese--minus Tim from Jurassic Park who is stuck at home with a heart murmur, poor kid. It's The Thin Red Line but without the pretentious voiceovers. (1:57:52 - 3:21:28) ... Also, My Dad Wrote a Porno, Lesser Gods, Euphoria, The Time Traveler's Wife, and praise for the non-HBO series Please Like Me. (0 - 26:34) | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. This is the start of the new series Invisible Statues in HSM. Our core idea for this series is that life worshipping God is better than life without. Each week we will look at the idols we elevate to the place of God in our heart and hold them up against Jesus to show how He is better in every way.
Margo Catts’ new novel Among the Lesser Gods (Arcade Publishing, 2017) opens in 1978, as Elena Alvarez, a newly minuted physics graduate living in LA, discovers she’s pregnant. She considers it to be just one more mistake in a lifetime of screw-ups. Her mother abandoned her after she accidentally set a deadly fire as a child, and she was raised by her cold distant father. She felt loved only when visiting her grandmother, who divides her time between the town of Leadville, Colorado, and a rustic mountain cabin in an old abandoned mining town. When her grandmother writes to ask Elena to come and babysit for two children whose mother is “gone,” Elena accepts with hopes that she can put off making any real decisions about her future. Through her grandmother’s stories, Elena starts to understand her father’s remoteness, and as the children she babysits become more attached to her, she starts to understand herself. “It seems a person is never finished learning about sorrow…” Elena’s internal conflicts, metaphysical musings, and reflections on family and forgiveness are all part of the stunning landscape. Then the two children go missing, and Elena is forced to confront the guilt that has followed her since childhood. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“Brother, you don’t eat pork do you?” -Man with wine About: New York. St. Cloud. Orlando. San Bernardino. Chattanooga. Garland. Boston. Fort Hood. Brussels. Paris. Nice. Kabul. Baghdad. Quetta. Lahore. Istanbul. It’s difficult to remember what life was like before any of these recent attacks, when there was no YouTube or Twitter and when the Twin Towers were still part of New York City’s skyline. There wasn’t too much cause for concern about being named Muhammad, wearing a hijab or simply practicing the faith. But times change. Now, two months away from Election Day, a presidential candidate who supports the racial profiling of Muslims and banning their entry into the country is in real contention to be the next Commander-In-Chief. But before any of that, the vitriol and hate, the radicalization and endless news cycles, the color-coded threat levels and social media jihad, there was a simpler version of Islam in America. In this episode, we dive into what life was like for Muslims around a northern Virginia mosque just eight stoplights away from the Pentagon.
